Who Will Win the Battle for the Packers Starting CB Job Opposite Jaire Alexander?

The Green Bay Packers open training camp in less than two weeks to prepare for the 2024 NFL season. As always, there will be battles for starting jobs and roster spots. One of the biggest competitions for a starting position will be at cornerback where Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine will fight for the starting job opposite Jaire Alexander.

The Packers would love to see Stokes win the job. The former first-round pick out of Georgia has excellent speed and athleticism. GM Brian Gutekunst selected Stokes with the 29th overall pick in 2021 NFL Draft.

As a rookie, Stokes was thrust into the starting lineup after Kevin King and Jaire Alexander both suffered injuries. While most rookies struggle, Stokes played well. Opposing quarterbacks completed only 49.5 percent of their passes when throwing to receivers covered by Stokes and had a quarterback rating of 71.3 according to Pro-Football-Reference.com.

Stokes also made his first and only career interception that season off Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also broke up 14 passes. His future looked very bright.

Since then, Stokes has struggled. His play fell off dramatically in 2022 and he looked tentative as a result. Opposing quarterbacks completed 80 percent of their passes when throwing to receivers covered by Stokes and he was often burned for big gains.

In Week 9, he suffered season ending foot and knee injuries. He started last season on the PUP list. He returned for one game but suffered another injury and then came back to play in two more games. Clearly, he wasn’t ready physically or mentally and again, he was beaten early and often by opposing receivers.

Part of the problem was the style of defense played by former defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Barry often had his corners give a cushion to opposing receivers while Stokes prefers to play more in press coverage.

During the offseason, the Packers sent Stokes to a specialist to look at his hamstrings. During OTAs, the coaches were pleased with what they saw from him.

“I think he's as good as I've ever seen him both mentally and, on the field,” said head coach Matt LaFleur. “I want to temper the expectations with that, but I do really mean that. He's out there competing each and every day. He looks fully healthy. He's doing a great job of challenging our wide receivers, he's always in great phase, and I think you see that personality is back.”

His main competition for the starting corner job will come from Valentine, the second-year man from Kentucky. The Packers selected Valentine in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

He made an immediate impression during training camp and in the preseason and even intercepted a pass against the Bengals in the first preseason game.

With both Alexander and Stokes injured, Valentine stepped into the lineup and started 12 games as a rookie. Valentine showed flashes of ability and played well. He broke up nine passes while allowing quarterbacks to compete just 57.6 percent of their passes when throwing to receivers covered by him. Their quarterback rating was 84.8.

Valentine also likes to be physical at the line of scrimmage in coverage. At times, he got too physical and was flagged for it as a result. He needs to know how much he can get away with to take his game to the next level.

Over the offseason, Valentine also put on weight as the suggestion of the coaching staff.

During OTAs, LaFleur was also impressed with Valentine’s performance. He called his offseason “outstanding.” He added, “That’s a guy that stands out, quite frankly in my mind. We challenged him to put on weight after the regular season. He came back and definitely looks bigger and is bigger. He’s stronger. I’m excited for him, he has a bright future.”

One of these players will likely win the battle to start opposite Alexander. This will be one of the more interesting battles in Packers training camp. The winner of the battle will see his career take a big step forward. The other player may see his outlook more in a very different direction.

This is an epic battle between two players who have taken very different roads to get where they are. A first round draft pick vs. a seventh round draft pick. Stokes has the pedigree but Valentine has the momentum. At this point, I would give the edge to Valentine, because I think we know what we have in him. That's not a sure thing though, because we've seen players flash for a year and regress the following year. That's exactly what Stokes did. Valentine just seems to have such an aggressive attitude that I would not bet against him.

My ❤️ is with Stokes though, after what he’s been through.

Re "The winner of the battle will see his career take a big step forward. The other player may see his outlook more in a very different direction."

Seems a bit dramatic. They could end up 1A and 1B, sharing time. Guys needs breaks. Injuries happen. The best result, which I cheer for, is that they both prove to be valuable and versatile players in a key position. We need more of those...

I suppose that's possible, but when has there ever been a 1A and a 1B? Not at all that I can remember. One guy will be the starter and will most likely get way more snaps than the other one, who will be the dime back and will only be on the field in certain situations. This will have big implications going forward, especially for Stokes, who is in the last year of his contract. If he reclaims the starting job and plays well, he will be in line for a nice big contract, whether from the Packers or another team. If he's the dime back, he will get a much smaller deal at best and will likely be considered replaceable by a younger cheaper player who has more upside.

CB's get hurt - just look at Alexander and Stokes over the last two years. I will take the depth of Alexander, Stokes, Valentine, Nixon and others.

What if both of them play as well as Jaire? Alexander has struggled against tall receivers the past two years…
Maybe Jaire gets a lot of time as the nickel/slot while Valentine and Stokes man the edges.

At this point, before any practices, injuries, or padded sessions, I would think the Packers would like for Valentine to start. We have him under contract for 3 seasons, he's really economical, he played all 17 games year. He started 12 games for us last year, so he was the de facto starter at that spot last year, and you'd have to think he might be improved in his second year.

Stokes, IMO, has to prove he can practice and play, and not for just a couple of weeks at a time. I'd use him for my dime guy, keep his snaps down a little, and re-evaluate in mid-season. Of course, if any of the guys ahead of him get hurt, he's on the field and then it's sink or swim.

If Valentine hasn't lost any speed, he definitely has the edge over Stokes who has to overcome both the physical and mental aspects of overcoming an injury and playing under Barry.

You’re right on Stokes. He has a lot to overcome. I love his chances. And his spirit and heart. I’m pullin for him.

I think the Packers would like to Stokes win the job based upon draft pedigree and the fact the he could likely bring back a 3rd or 4th round pick if he signs elsewhere after the 2024 season if he plays well.My gut feeling is the Valentine wins the job after taking the 2nd year leap that so many players do.I was impressed with the job he did last year after being thrust into a starting role due to injuries.

In his rookie year Stokes intercepted just one pass, but he dropped four other potential interceptions. The drops are part of all the times that Stokes was in the right position and either couldn’t find the ball or didn’t have the ball skills necessary to make a play on the ball in the air. Stokes gave up four tds, also. He wasn't a starter and was put in the lineup due to injury. He played ok, nothing more. I'm really tired of hearing how great Stokes is when healthy. Stokes has speed that allows him to recover when beaten and decent technique, but he has trouble tracking the ball in the air. I hope that the Packers number two corner will make plays on the ball. I'm not confident that Stokes can.
