Packers Practice Roundup, August 13, 2024
The offense is still doing push ups.

Matt LaFleur says the team will be in uppers today (13th), full pads tomorrow. A walk through Thursday before flying to Denver, and then joint practice Friday against the Broncos before Sunday's preseason match up. Wood
INJURIES:
Jordan Morgan working individual drills. Won’t see him in team reps today, but still lining up at right guard in pre-practice. Wood
Quay Walker dropped out of practice a little bit ago. No real concern over his status, though. 2) Matt LaFleur says MarShawn Lloyd will not practice after suffering a hamstring injury in Saturday’s game. He won’t practice today or this week? LaFleur: “He will not be practicing.” Schneidman
Tucker Kraft getting some 11-on-11 snaps today. [Kraft threw a block on one play, so it is not just individual drills. TGR] 2) Looks like Donovan Jennings and Ty’Ron Hopper back for at least the individual portion of practice. Bretl
Donovan Jennings (knee) and Dimitri Stanley (hamstring) also have returned. Hodkiewicz
New injuries: RB Jarveon Howard (ankle).
Dropped out of practice: LB Quay Walker (undisclosed), G/C Jacob Monk (undisclosed).
Returned to practice: WR Dimitri Stanley (hamstring), DE Deslin Alexandre (lower leg), LB Ty’Ron Hopper (ankle), G Donovan Jennings (knee), RG Jordan Morgan (shoulder).
Old injuries: RB MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring), CB Carrington Valentine (hamstring), DE Keshawn Banks (groin), LB Edgerrin Cooper (hip). Huber
PERSONNEL:
Starting OL: Walker - Jenkins - Myers - Rhyan - Tom. Bullard next to McKinney at S. Don’t see Q. Walker in team portion. Hopper is not doing team work and Cooper is still out so UDFA Ralen Goforth getting starting snaps. McDuffie - Wilson - Goforth. Bretl
Starters in team Love - Jacobs - Dillon - Musgrave Wicks - Doubs Walker - Jenkins - Myers - Rhyan - Tom. Defense: Gary - Wyatt - Clark - Smith - Wilson - McDuffie - Jaire - Nixon - Stokes Bullard - McKinney. Herman
Looks like Michael Pratt is QB2 today, at least for red-zone and end-of-practice drive. Dont know if it’s just experimenting or if related to performance or injury with Clifford, who I believe threw two picks today. Pratt hits Sims for a big gain down seam to set up the winning FG. [Anyway, the change happened mid-way through today’s practice (13th). TGR] Schneidman
OFFENSE:
During Saturday’s preseason opener in Cleveland, Monk played 61 snaps–the most on the offensive side of the ball for the Packers. Instantly, we saw Monk’s versatility, with him playing 11 snaps at left guard, 17 at center, and another 33 at right guard. I think naturally he’s more comfortable playing right guard but for us he’s played a lot more center. Again, trying to develop at all three of those inside positions for him to help us out.” Monk is also an excellent athlete, posting an elite Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 9.74 during the pre-draft process, and we saw those movement skills on display with his ability to cover multiple gaps. Over 29 pass-blocking snaps, Monk surrendered only one quarterback hit, according to PFF, and was routinely finishing blocks in the run game. Bretl
Saturday was the first time Sean Rhyan had played center in a game since high school. Hodkiewicz
A sweep to the right by Jacobs went nowhere because rookie safety Evan Williams – despite a 114-pound weight disadvantage – showed incredible physicality in beating guard Luke Tenuta. [I suspect Tenuta is trying to hold on to a practice squad spot at this point. TGR] Huber
Jordan Love connects on a go route to Christian Watson for 50 yards. Watson beat Eric Stokes deep and used his size to shield the #Packers cornerback to win with the ball in air. Third time Love has connected with Watson on a deep go in camp. Those two might torch defenses this fall. 2) Another go ball from Jordan Love, this one dropped over the shoulder perfectly to Jayden Reed down the left sideline for 40 yards. Love dropped a dime to Reed up the left seam that Reed couldn’t handle earlier in the period. Comes right back to him and connects for a huge play. [Love started hot but had his ups and downs later. TGR] Wood
Love with a gorgeous throw-him-open pass to Musgrave but 88 can’t hang on. Love tries to hit a seam throw in between the corner and safety to Reed but juuuuust off his fingertips. Love compete to Melton short on a quick out. Love had Davis on a deep post but a big overthrow. Herman [Here are some ups and some downs. TGR
Practice ends with Pratt hitting Sims for 29 yards in seam to set up Hale 46 yarder to end practice. 2) Pratt throws a - dare I say - laser to Jalen Wayne. Hodkiewicz
Is there a new number 2 QB?!?! Pratt getting both 2 minute drills. Pratt immediately slings two completions. Hicks and Sims, both over the middle. Spike Throw away on 3rd. Fg unit on. 2) 40 seconds left. Tie game. Ball at own 45. First and 10. 1’s up first. Love had Wicks over the middle but it was slightly behind him and Wicks had to slow down for it. In the meantime Jaire closed in a blink and broke it up. Incomplete to Doubs down the left sideline. Good pressure. Was basically a throwaway. False start offense. I believe Walker. Love tries to hit Dillon deep. Dillon a bit late locating it but it was too far in front anyway. Defense wins. 3) Love executes a gorgeous little drive. 22 seconds left. Opposing 18 yard line. No timeouts. Slant to Wicks for 16. Spike. Touchdown to Doubs who was wide open. 4) Same situation for Pratt. Incomplete in the end zone. Had a chance for a TD but overthrew iit out of bounds. Complete on the next play to Melton to the 6 and out of bounds. Slaton tipped pass at the line. Ballentine pbu outside. Some odd happenings on that drive. Was very disjointed. Herman
Ben Sims with a nice catch over the middle from Clifford and a nice little move after the catch. Two nice plays from Sims so far. 2) Oh my god. A SCREEN PASS THAT WORKED!!!!! Love hits Musgrave on the TE screen and Kraft takes out two defenders with a block. Nice pickup for the offense. Herman
On the next play, Love hit Bo Melton on the sideline against Jaire Alexander. After a rough performance on Saturday, Melton was back to being Melton. Melton added another catch during the offensive drill that started at the defense’s 18 with 22 seconds left. Huber
Offense does push ups to end the day. Huber
DEFENSE:
Goodness, Lukas Van Ness can turn the corner off the edge. Just blast past Kadeem Telfort to sack Michael Pratt. That looked like the defensive line equivalent of a layup. Wood
Gary was CLOSE to a sack on love and possibly got it. Love connects on 16 yd slant to Wicks. Clocks it and hits Doubs for the 2 yd TD on an out. Hodkiewicz
Linebacker Kristian Welch had a couple noteworthy plays. First, he leveled big running back Ellis Merriweather in the hole on the first play of the team-run period. Merriweather, who is a handful at 220 pounds, ran smack into No. 54 and hit the turf. Welch has done that a few times this summer. Later, Welch almost intercepted Jordan Love by getting in the passing lane on a pass directed to Romeo Doubs. Huber
Kristian Welch with a near pick of Love over the middle. Never saw it. Welch just dropped it. Herman [Same play as the Huber tweet just above, with a slightly different take. TGR]
An easy 2-yard TD from Jordan Love on an out route to Romeo Doubs. Haven’t seen much busted coverage in this camp, but that was one. Doubs wide open in the end zone. Jaire Alexander and Javon Bullard talking it over after the rep. [Herman described the same play thusly: Big mistake by rookie Javon Bullard who doesn’t line up right and leaves Jayden Reed uncovered. Reed takes it deep. Love finds him for a huge gain down the left sideline. Herman assigns blame and Wood didn’t. TGR] 2) Jordan Love’s deep ball is so electric right now, it works even when it doesn’t. Bally underthrew Bo Melton down right sideline, but rookie Evan Williams trucks him well before ball arrives. Easy DPI and about 40 yards. [Williams never turned his head. TGR] 3) Zayne Anderson picks off Sean Clifford. Pass went straight to him. Believe that’s now 18 picks for #Packers defense in camp. Wood
Coming off an impressive preseason game at Cleveland, Sean Clifford was intercepted by safety Zayne Anderson and cornerback Kalen King. Late in practice, rookie Michael Pratt took Clifford’s place during the final two periods. Huber [Bill Huber had a nice summary of Tuesday’s practice - click here to view it. TGR]
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Alex Hale just missed three field goals in a row from 47, 54 and 51. [Hale missed from 56 as well. All the misses were pretty darn long attempts, though I suppose it is warm out. TGR] He’s 4/8 on the day. Packers might be looking for another P-squad kicker if Joseph or Carlson gets claimed. Schneidman
MISCELLANEOUS:
Ben Sirmans says AJ Dillon's pad level needed to be better in short yardage, but blocking was such it might not have made a difference. He believes Dillon is able to truck defenders, has seen him do it before. Just got bad looks in Cleveland. 2) RB coach Ben Sirmans on Emanuel Wilson: "He's got really good feet. He's big. He's shown signs of having really good strength. It's just a matter of him bringing everything together." [Reasonably forthcoming and honest. TGR] 3) passing game coordinator Jason Vrable says RB coach Ben Sirmans pieced together all of Josh Jacobs' targets after signing in free agency, and they watched them as a staff. The takeaway: "There's not a route that he can't run." [Okay, just reasonably honest. TGR] Wo
Packers sign LB Chris Russell to bolster depth with injuries, per Aaron Wilson. [No corresponding roster move to make room for Russell. A team has 24 hours to make room. Kicker Alex Hale could be a candidate for waivers. TGR] 2) UFL star running back Nate McCrary is signing with the Green Bay Packers. [The Packers previously looked at him in training camp last year, per Paul Bretl. Now the Packers need to find two roster spots. Lloyd probably is going to be out for a week or more with a hamstring and Howard injured his ankle today. TGR] 3) "I think that's big time when you have a guy at the center position that can reach," said LaFleur. "I love the passion," LaFleur adds. 4) Butkus mentions Rhyan's strength and that he had some really good reps on Saturday. Mentions the need to continue finding that consistency. 5) I asked John Dunn about Wilson yesterday, who has seen his share of opportunities in the passing game the last week-plus: "He's a good route runner. He's got good feet, good hips, he does a nice job at the top of his routes." Bretl
Perhaps that was part of the script and pure coincidence, but it was noteworthy seeing Pratt throwing the ball to the likes of Bo Melton and Malik Heath rather than undrafted rookies. If nothing else, it would seem to indicate the team is intrigued enough by Pratt to want to see him line up with and against better players. Huber
Vikings QB JJ McCarthy missed practice with knee soreness and tests revealed a meniscus issue that he’ll undergo surgery for, per me and Tom Pelissero. Rapoport
RB AJ Dillon's message for all "keyboard warriors": "I graded 98%, try to go out & do more than what I did -- If you don't live inside my house, your opinion is so secondary to me I couldn't be bothered with it -- you can't do what we're doing just enjoy & watch." Cody Krupp
I thought Bill Huber had a nice article on Tuesday's practice which you can read by clicking here.

Donovan Jennings returned to practice. He will have to make quite an impression during the next 2 and a half weeks to secure a roster spot, and a positive impression to make the practice squad. Ditto really for Caleb Jones, but at least he can play in games. Otherwise, not much news on the offensive line. There were some reflections on the performances turned in against Cleveland. I found the breakdown of Monk's snaps very interesting: 11 at LG, 17 at center, and 33 at right guard. The Packers could really use an offensive lineman or three to step up.
Not much news at wide receiver or RB. Howard got hurt. I guess Dillon read the papers and/or social media.
Melton rebounded. TE also about the same but Kraft was out there blocking, which is great. Sims caught a couple. Musgrave dropped a beautiful pass from Love.
QB Pratt moved up and Clifford tossed 2 INTs. Clifford left an opening so it is unsurprising that Pratt is now getting a chance with better players surrounding him and against better players.
Very little on defense, which "won" the practice. Nothing on the DL. Gary almost had a sack against someone. Welch dropped a pass. Enagbare has been quiet as a mouse for the entirety of training camp, and played poorly against Cleveland. I hope all is well with him. Williams with obvious pass interference. Bullard blew coverage, with the evidence being that a bunch of players were yelling at him to move prior to the snap. I suppose it might be that he lined up correctly and the other players were wrong.

Off topic: I thought the linked article was interesting. GB franchise is worth $5.39B. Dallas is #1 at $10.32B.
Still can't link. Add http:// to the beginning or search yahoo sport NFL franchise value Liz Roscher

Does being a not-for-profit affect valuation?
Or are these valuations driven entirely by revenue/profitability before margins are dispersed into community projects and charity?
Edit: Also, it was my understanding that the ONLY view into NFL team ledgers is the profit reports of the Green Bay Packers, because they are publicly owned.. (and the other teams don't like it, lol). So, if that's the case, where are the valuations for the 31 other NFL franchises coming from?

No real idea how this was calculated. The article I linked to was based on a Sportico article, which is behind a paywall. The numbers are similar to the estimates by Forbes. I don't know how much I trust Forbes for that matter - it seems to me Forbes was extolling the value of Silicon Valley Bank not too long ago.
I can note that Dan Snyder got $6.05B for the Washington Commanders in 2023, and the Sportico article listed the team's value at $6.3B. Denver Broncos sold for $4.65B in 2022. Sportico has Denver worth $5.49B at present.

There are various methods employed for a sports franchise value assessment, but typically the ones we see are based upon different balances of several key things. The value of the Brand is typically a big part of it, for example of an intangible, but revenue from non football income actual and potential is typically key, alongside market size and potential for further exploitation, which hits the Packers. Conversely, stability of support metrics may well boost us as may the status of Lambeau itself. A core element obviously reflects the value of the league membership as well. Finally, most will adjust for sale of recent sale prices of other franchises.
Since the Packers can’t be sold as a going concern, the valuations in our case are hypothetical. If I recall, the only option allowed is the liquidation of assets with the proceeds going to the Foundation.
Thats from memory, I’m not inclined to revisit, but in general a not-for-profit status would not affect valuation unless as a results of limitations on the freedom of a purchaser to change that status or operate with the freedom generally allowed by law.

"but revenue from non football income actual and potential is typically key"
Well, here's the big sticking point. 31 of 32 NFL franchises don't share their books. The only thing that's really open is the league shared revenue, as it relates to broadcasting rights and the salary cap is formulated from it.

The Packers have been known to juggle their books prior to CBA negotiations. Also, brand recognition/valuation is hugely subjective.

Bitternotsour,
I'm not saying I don't believe you, but I would be extremely interested in some source material for your statement about the Packers being known to 'juggle their books' in CBA negotiation years. My understanding was the Packers' yearly financials (which must be made publicly available due to not-for-profit status and being publicly held) were always used by the NFLPA because it was the only source of transparent numbers in the league, and for the same reasons, the 31 other NFL franchises found the Packers to be a huge thorn in their side during CBA negotiations.
Also, there is little-to-no reason for a not-for-profit to 'juggle their books' before CBA negotiations that I can think of. What is your proposed motive?

August 16, 2024 at 12:46 am
God, that's a heavy lift now. It was prior to the 2020 CBA, the Packers reported plunging revenue (Murphy). The NFL lamented that that the players were destroying profitability. The next year, magically, the profits were back up to record levels. I believe they parked a bunch of stadium costs in the year (an accounting trick).
The motive was to appear less profitable in a negotiating year. It was reported at the time as an indicator that the NFL was facing serious cash flow/profitability issues.

While it's not out of the question that I might make something like this up due to my age, the significant amount of drugs I consumed in the seventies and 80s, and the entertainment element of actually lying, I shockingly recalled that instance correctly. that link needs to be reconstructed, it has spaces in it so that it would be accepted by the new posting protocol.
The Packers website provided those details about the 1 time write-offs after the CBA had been completed.

I read the article. It was fairly transparent.
"If you exclude the coaching transition as well as the settlement provision, our operating profit would have been comparable to previous years," he said. "We continue to have all the resources needed to support football and the decisions they need to make for us to be competitive."
Previous year profit was $34 million. Total Revenues increased $23 Million - a 5% increase (revenues, not profit)
Settlement provision relating to the concussion fund for retired NFL players was $765 million shared by all 32 NFL franchises; that was nearly $29 million right off the top of profits.
I don't know.. I don't think this article suggests book cooking. It's possible, but I don't think there's evidence here that makes it likely.

Against the Browns, there were two good developments for the interior O-line: Sean Rhyan looking natural as a center and Jacob Monk playing much better than he did on Family Night. Now we've got Donovan Jennings finally suiting up. Maybe it's not too late for him to make a run at a roster spot. He's got a ton of experience from his college career--played in something like 50 games. At this point, he may be our only hope to save us from Royce Newman.
Interesting that Pratt got more snaps. I thought he looked a little more talented than Clifford in the preseason game, and most people seem to think the same thing.
Christian Welch made some nice plays in this practice, but how do you fit him onto the roster?
Thegreatreynoldo
August 14, 2024 at 06:13 am
In my view, it is about keeping Brenton Cox vs. keeping Kalen King, Arron Mosby, Christian Welch, Robert Rochell, or Zayne Anderson. I think Cox is the least valuable player likely to make the 53 at this point. If GB does not keep him, they can keep one of the players I listed. Perhaps you like someone I didn't list? This assumes 25 on defense and 25 on offense.
I like all of the guys I listed. To be fair and forthcoming, I wouldn't lose sleep over any of them (at this point, anyway). I think they would all slide through waivers and rejoin the Packers on the PS.
Offense is different. 2 QBs, 3RBs, 4 TEs, 6WRs, and 9 OL. That's 24. Maybe Lloyd to IR since he does not need to take up a roster spot to be recalled after 4 games from injured reserve under the new rules. That's 23, so 2 spots open. It could be a 3rd QB, a 4th RB, a 5th TE is unlikely but who knows or 7th WR, or yet another (10th) OL who can't play.

Good breakdown of the roster bubble guys, TGR. I keep thinking of how they kept Cox on the roster all last season, even though he got no meaningful playing time, and when Enagbare got hurt in the playoffs, they called up Keyshawn Banks from the practice squad rather than activate Cox for the game. So last year they put a lot of value on Cox as a developmental player. Has he progressed enough to justify keeping him again, even though he is clearly still the 5th option as a pass rusher? I don't know. He's had some flashes. Arron Moseby may have caught up to him though.
I guess that, in the end, my best guess is that they keep Cox and put all those other guys on the practice squad to begin the season. There are bound to be injuries that allow some of them to be elevated to the 53-player roster during the season. And until then, some of them can be elevated to the game day roster for special teams purposes, due to injuries and healthy scratches.
The one thing I don't want on offense is 10 O-linemen. I don't see the talent to justify that. I'm leaning toward 3 QBs and 7 WRs. They kept 7 WRs two years ago.

August 14, 2024 at 08:00 am
According to Hod yesterday, (to my surprise) it's not very often they don't start out the season with 4 running backs on the roster. That might change as MLF uses a TE as the H-back now instead of having a full back.
Coldworld
August 14, 2024 at 06:49 am
It’s interesting though that when they need snaps due to injury it’s consistently Goforth getting first use.
I think STs will be the decider, which isn’t a radical statement, I’m just less clear what the likely ST needs balance will be this year with the kick off changes.
I only expect 6 WRs. I think 4 TEs is more likely than 7 WRs, but Davis is the H back role as well as being one of those and a key STer. I wonder how many safeties on D. Surely they keep Oladapo on draft status, but Anderson has had a good camp and is a key STer and there’s talent in King and Rochell at CB that might actually be needed too. Will AJJ make it? Perhaps he’s supplanted Anderson on STs and that seals it.

August 14, 2024 at 07:39 am
I haven't considered Goforth, really. 4 ILBs seem like locks in Quay, Cooper, Eric Wilson and McDuffie. would they keep 5? It isn't warranted unless Welch or Goforth shines very brightly.
I am thinking hoping that donovan Jennings and/or caleb Jones can make up for lost time in a big way.
GregC
August 14, 2024 at 08:05 am
You forgot Ty'Ron Hopper.
Thegreatreynoldo
August 14, 2024 at 10:26 am
I sure did! And Hopper is a lock. So, Quay, Cooper, Hopper, and I should think McDuffie are complete locks. Eric Wilson is better than a good bet. That is five ILBs. I think 5 is all they will keep on the 53. Barring injuries, I think that leaves Welch and Goforth for the PS. Christian Young got a good PFF grade. I have not really been paying attention to him, either.

August 14, 2024 at 08:50 am
I was just pointing out that Goforth seems to be ahead of Welch in terms of actual D preferences consistently. I think he’s earning a PS spot, not a roster one.
At this point I suspect Jennings starts out on the PS. The showing at G by Monk makes me happier about that. I’m starting to wonder if Jones is following Nijman into the Stenavich sh*t list. He’s clearly better than Telfort, but Telfort was out with the 2s again. Dillard is a stunt away from getting someone killed (or was last year). He’s Newman. Looks fine when he knows what’s coming. That’s always been his undoing.

August 14, 2024 at 07:15 am
Observations: So, it was nice to see Caleb Jones get some desperately needed playing time. It is clear that he is arguably one of the best drive blockers on the team. Secondly, it seems Bo Melton is taking all the heat for not making catches on rather poor passes from Clifford. Finally, (almost magically) the OL seems unable to block on forth and short. Of course AJ Dillon is the scapegoat. Yet, even the greatest RB's in history can not run through stone walls.
GregC
August 14, 2024 at 07:25 am
Maybe the stone wall is partly due to the fact that when Dillon is in the backfield, the defense does not have to worry much about defending the edge. The plunge up the middle is Dillon's only play in short yardage situations. He's not likely to take it to the edge on a designed play, and he's not likely to bounce it to the outside if it's blocked up in the middle. Marshawn Lloyd and Emmanuel Wilson can do those things.
T7Steve
August 14, 2024 at 08:08 am
Still need to get a yard when you need a yard, no matter where you run. 3 bad tries in a row isn't on Dillon. Cleavland didn't even have their 1s on the field.
Coldworld
August 14, 2024 at 11:05 am
I don’t know. LaFleur did talk about Dillon’s’ pad level being too high and him not getting leverage. However, he’s not a rookie. If you are going to stay in the league by being a between the tackles pounder, then you had better be able to push the pile when there are no gaps more often than not.
Think Mike Alstott, for example. He was a FB, but only a pound heavier than Dillon while an inch taller. Dillon should be as good or better since he is more compact (slightly) and more athletic per testing. Dillon has to be able to make those yards against 2nd stringers. It’s analogous to the goal line situations we have seen him disappoint in too often. Dillon isn’t a typical NFL RB, he’s not going to burn you outside often and teams defend him accordingly. If he can’t do an Alstott, he’s got very little offensive value.
I’d buy that excuse for most RBs, but for a player of Dillon’s characteristics, I really don’t. The best defense is the small sample. He needs to get a good number of snaps and a chance to prove he can do it consistently. Otherwise we have to face the fact that we are seeing why Jones, not Quadzilla, was our go-to goal line back, even between the tackles. Up to Dillon to listen to LaFleur and prove himself this week.

Well, I am not going to read my own articles just to find out! Yeah, I think there was something about him having some kind of an issue. I think he got some reduced reps in at least one practice recently.
Coldworld
August 14, 2024 at 11:16 am
Haha, I didn’t think it was a post practice comment—I did scan your pieces quickly to see if I could find it. This isn’t it exactly, but Bill Huber mentioned “Quay Walker has taken limited reps at practice for the past week and dropped out of Tuesday’s practice” in his piece announcing the signing of Russell.
P.S.
I just saw that Monk went out with exhaustion (possibly heat?) per LaFleur and is fine. He is back today, Wednesday, along with Walker and, finally, Valentine. It will be interesting to see if Walker does more than individuals, but whatever it is seems relatively minor based on that. Valentine probably will be individuals only for a bit.
