To The Haters: It's Time to Love Love

Look, not everyone loved the Jordan Love pick. But it's time to let that go and root for his success -- the team's future depends on it.

There’s a faction of Packers fans out there who seem rooted in rooting for failure. Haters, one might say. Not for failure of the franchise, but of some of the players who comprise the very franchise they wish to succeed, which… ya know, is counter-intuitive. The DIC (or Draft Industrial Complex, if you’ve been under a rock) has unearthed a mob of DRAFTNIKS who live by Mel Kiper rankings to formulate opinions on how players fit on a team, when they really won’t be true contributors for a few years. If a player isn’t taken as an “immediate need” automatically sucks, won’t contribute and makes Brian Gutekunst an idiot. Basically the “Super Bowl/Toilet Bowl” guy, which is admittedly one of my favorite clips of all time.

This brings me to the timely topic of Jordan Love and his controversial selection in 2020. As we all recall – well, most of us – Aaron Rodgers was coming off a pretty so-so year, and it appeared that his time may have been coming to an end in Green Bay. After the Great Wide Receiver Run of 2020, the pickings were rather slim at WR, so Gutekunst used the pick on a talented, developmental prospect in Love. He certainly showed flashes in college, but his stat line was meh, team was worse than meh, and competition was no better. Does this read like a first-round pick? I don’t know, I’m not a scout or general manager. I admittedly don’t know what to look for when watching film of college players and how they translate to the NFL. I’ve never spoken a word to him, only heard him speak in pressers a few times. I know nothing about him other than he struggled in 2021 against the Chiefs and Lions, but looked like he owned the field in his limited 2022 appearances, namely against Philly. There’s no doubt the improvement has been there for Love whether you think he’s the guy or not.

And that brings me back to the point of this column. “Jordan Love is garbage [insert waste basket emoji here].” I’ve seen a TON of that kind of thing, from people on Twitter who aren’t even eggs, but have Aaron Rodgers in their banner, or a family photo all supposedly “Carrying the G.” For the record, these people don’t carry it. These are fans who are making a claim on Jordan Love’s future channeling their Rodgers fandom, hatred of the pick of a QB in the first round, belief that Denzel Mims would have put the team over the top, thought that Love isn’t talented because of the team and conference for which he played, among a litany of other nonsense. The point is, NO ONE KNOWS what Love will turn into. Especially those outside of 1265 Lombardi. His action has been limited. Why? Not because he sucks, but because Rodgers got his magic back, riding back-to-back MVP seasons. Who knows how ready Love was? He didn’t need to be because the Packers had 12. He was ready to be a backup.

Now brings me to this impending Offseason From Hell: Part 3, from the studio that brought you classics like Blow My Brains Out: Offseason 2021 and Make It Stop: Packers Offseason 2022. There’s speculation a’brewing that Aaron Rodgers may be on the move. It feels more real this year than it has in all previous seasons. After a down year, both personally for Rodgers and for the team, it feels like a good of a time as any to make the switch to the first-rounder you’ve spent three years developing while allowing Rodgers to go elsewhere for one more shot while getting some draft compensation. It’s not a terrible spot to be when the team is in re-tooling mode, which it sure seems like they are. Having a full year of playing prior to a contract year would also help appropriately extend him or move on if he can’t cut it.

Should the team rip off that band-aid and hand the keys to Love, we’ll finally get to see what he’s made of. No one knows if he’s good, bad or mediocre. If you THINK you do, you’re either a coach who has seen how he’s performed and carried himself in practice OR you’re a Rodgers slap who is just incorrect in making any sort of judgment right now. I have no idea what Love will become. What I do know is that he’s a talented quarterback who’s spent four years developing to be a starter. He’s an unknown and should be treated as such. But he’s potentially the starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, and should be treated as such by Carriers of the G.

If he ends up being what the Packers hope? SICK! It means the team is good and in a spot to compete for the long-term. It also means a WHOLE LOT of people are wrong, and there will be celebratory dunking-on by those who first and foremost want to see their team succeed. If he fails? Congrats on being right! Hooray you, hater! And not one single Packers fan will care about what you think because that means the team needs to start over. And no one wants that. What we should ALL want is for Love to come in, if he does in 2023, and be the guy. Carry the QB torch we’ve been enjoying since the early 1990s.

So who do you want to be? Right, or a fan of a championship football team?

Tony, where to start??? I usually like reading your articles , but this was jus another unnecessary attempt to divide Packers fans. Why, I don't know. Perhaps it's because you know that CHTV is a Rodgers adverse site, and it will get you a bunch of atta boy Tony kudos.

I can't tell you what they say on Twitter because I think it's waste of time. Here at CHTV (the site you posted this article) the vast majority of commenters are not in any way shape or manor Jordan Love haters. i assume you are well aware of that if you read the comments. In your eyes, is it not possible to be fans of both AR and JL? I know I am a fan of both.

You obviously didn't take the time to proof read what you wrote in this article:

"I know nothing about him other than he struggled in 2021 against the Chiefs and Lions, but looked like he owned the field in his limited 2021 appearances, namely against Philly."

" it feels like a good of a time as any to make the switch to the first-rounder you’ve spent 4 years"

The first quote speaks for itself. Mistakes happen, and I'm sure there will be some typos in my reply. The second one suggests you think the Packers have had Love for 4yrs. I'm sure are aware that they have not yet developed Love for 4 years.

"This brings me to the timely topic of Jordan Love and his controversial selection in 2020. As we all recall – well, most of us – Aaron Rodgers was coming off a pretty so-so year, and it appeared that his time may have been coming to an end in Green Bay."

First of all, 4000 yards passing with 26 TD's and 4 Int. on a team that went 13-3 with a new coach and offense, is only a so so year if you are a future HOF QB.

2nd. Nobody saw the Pack taking JL. It shocked all of Packer Nation. I don't recall the masses in Packer Nation calling for a QB change after the 2019 season.

Tony, I truly appreciate you taking time to contribute articles to CHTV. From what I understand it's not like you are payed a lot of money (if any), but we need a break from divisive articles.

Lets just let the Packers and Rodgers figure it out one way or the other, and then we can all move on.

I appreciate your thoughtful reply, and yeah I input the development time incorrectly, which upset more people than it probably should have. Keep in mind it's a blog, not the New York Times... Errors will happen. I'll fix those.

The goal isn't division. At all. It's simply calling out a significant number of fans online who unfairly think Love stinks or adore Rodgers to no end, much like so many did with Favre.

There's a real issue with some in our fan base with bowing at altars to the point of hoping other players will fail. And regarding Rodgers in 2019, he was bad in 18 and while his stat line was fine in 19, he had a ton of throwaways and was pretty good, but not great like 20 and 21. Just my opinion, disagreement is fine.

And finally, I definitely don't write about the Packers for money. I have thoughts and occasionally write them down and hope that for whomever reads it, they'll take something away.

Amen to your last line. Thanks again for the response and for reading.

MainePackFan - excellent posts on your part. I was thinking many of the thoughts as I was reading the article. I have nothing against Love either and I can't state with any certainty whether he will be a good, great or a flop as an NFL QB. Yes he has improved since 2020 but I'm not putting much into his performance against the Eagles.

He threw a whopping 12 passes against a defense that was in garbage time mode and had not prepared to play against Love. Even if they had prepared for Love they would not have much film to work with since has Love has played very little up to this point in his career.

In fact that is exactly why the Packers should have started Love when Rodgers injured his thumb. The Jets, Lions and commanders would not have much film to work with in terms of preparing for Love. This could have been a huge advantage for the Packers against those opponents and could have resulted in 2 or 3 more wins for the Packers in 2022.

In any case had Love started a few games while Rodgers was injured we would all have a better sense if Love can evolve into an effective QB for the Packers, which as you very correctly commented is all that most of us here at CHTV want for Love or whoever plays QB for the Packers. Good job Maine Pack Fan. Thanks, Since '61

Of course, none taken. In my experience, the number of "haters" is not insignificant. I even have some in my family who just think the guy stinks. My whole point is that no one knows, so we need to see how he does. But ultimately, anyone who roots for the Packers should root for Love and that's not the case.

Were you around during the Favre/Rodgers years? It was much worse I think. It became clear that a very large minority had never really been franchise fans, they were drawn in by Favre and he was their focus and tie.

A few were open about that, but it’s interesting how many weren’t and how emotive they could become. Others were just terrified of change to the point of finding any reason, however spurious, to avert it.

Fandom is a weird and convoluted thing. There’s as much faith and certainty as reason and analysis. We have only just scratched the surface of that maelstrom as yet, but some show the tell tale signs.

Not a bull shit article from a fan boy at all. If 12 comes back we’re in purgatory! Move him and roll the dice. If Love doesn’t work out at least we’re moving forward. If not we’re in a place we haven’t seen in a damn long time. Did you live through the mid 70’s and 80’s? I did. It wasn’t pretty.

That’s where we’re headed in the post Rodgers era. Got a bad feeling about Love. I think we will be 3 to 4 games into his first season and everyone will be realizing we just entered a total rebuild and the search for the next great quarterback in Green Bay. All the problems he had coming out of college are still on full display.

From the article: "So who do you want to be? Right, or a fan of a championship football team?"

Is the ducky & bunny crowd that keeps puffing up the greatness of the Packer organization really pretending this is going to be a CHAMPIONSHIP football team any time in the near future?

Or are they claiming this is a CHAMPIONSHIP football team because 13 seasons ago (under a different GM, different head coach and all but 2 players who are no longer in Green Bay) the Packers won a Super Bowl?

Obviously that is true. The fact is though that one can’t know till it’s tested in anger. That’s something TT understood. It’s something the current leadership claims not to need. That’s more concerning to me than anything, because it’s simply not true. To be honest, I simply don’t believe them.

There is no substitute for testing, with an appropriate game plan, in live conditions against opponents playing at strength and with purpose. There never has been and there never will be, and even then, if promise is shown, it takes time to validate and there is a learning curve through experience.

We better add a TE or WR in 1 of the first 2 rounds. Doubs showed flashes, also disappeared at times with some drops. He might be great or he may be nothing special. After watching Kelce, Kittle, Hockenson, etc. we desperately need a top end TE, and this is a good draft for TE's.

The worst of the 3 TEs you mentioned was drafted in the 1st round. (Kelce = 3rd round pick,
Kittle = a 5th round pick...)

Drafting a TE in the first round is terrible value in my opinion.

WR, I wouldn't mind a WR in the 1st round, but that would go against Gutey's philosophical makeup.

If this is a good draft for TEs, we can easily wait to take one later in the draft.

Yes. You want a stud at center, because the center handles the ball on every play and directs blocking adjustments at the line. A good center makes both guards better.

I thought and still do think that Tom is a really good fit at C. There is no way I see a healthy line minus Tom, particularly if he adds strength/power. Where is interesting. Personally I would move on from Bakh and take what we can in trade, but if we don’t, then right now it’s Tom at C with Jenkins to his left that seems the greatest upgrade to me.

Bakh, Jenkins, TOM, Runyan, Josh or Walker or Jones...

I think Runyan will be even better in his 3rd year, so I'm not worried about him.

Would love for either Walker or Jones come in next year and take RT by storm and we had the luxury of having Nijman as our swing tackle all season.

I just want the 5 best guys on the field. No more Jake Hanson BS.

Myers might even develop even more and be our best choice at Center, IDK, but I do want the best OL we can provide...

It's a 5-12 roster if you play bad. We return the best defense in the division, and we can improve ourselves in the draft, and play well, then we're not going to be the worst team in the division.

If our coaching doesn't improve, it could be a long year, but that is on the FO too.

Draft well, development of younger players, good coaching, and we're right back to being the best team in the division, but of all those things, I think the "good coaching" might be the least likely? I could be wrong though.

Is it still possible MaLF replaces Barry? or OL Coach? IDK, but I wish he would.

We honored his wishes, and asked for his autograph.
Because it was the right thing to do. He was a hero.
Never did we go on speculation or show disrespect.
What did Rodgers do to you! He was ours for life.
Gutey drafted Love.
It's Gutey who should be fired. Trade Gutey!
Rodgers has No drug problem. He's been a 3 time MVP.
Yet the tar, feathers, and gallows were ready.
Thanks to a GM only cared about himself.

by one thing.

Essentially agreed. Four points:
1. Love played well in 2022 and I can't say Rogers played better.
2. Love seems quite comfortable with the young receives, Rogers seems not.
3. Love wants to play football, quietly it seems. Rogers is a celebrity.
4. Love seems to have his head on straight. Rogers has turned into a spiritist doper; God knows what it's done to his ability to quickly see open receives in the middle of the field against Detroit.

Four points:

1. There is a "d" in dense, and also in Rodgers.
2. I knew the anti-spiritist doper crowd would rear its ugly head eventually.
3. Consistently referring to WRs as "receives" is something only a spiritist doper would do.
4. If Love wants to play quietly, that's fine, but stadiums be loud and he'll need to use his outside voice.

One of the benefits of satellite radio is before the NFL draft the NFL channel always has a QB expert talking about the top quarterbacks and where they will be drafted. For some reason I was listening to the expert (don't remember who but someone on this site probably knows) talk about Love. He said that his arm strength was the best in the draft. His biggest weakness was lack of refinement compared to the others. He even mentioned his best draft spot would be a team where he could sit and learn the pro game like Aaron Rodgers did behind Favre.
Well it happened and how good is this kid? Nobody on this site can answer that, but I guarantee anyone reading this that the coaching staff knows what they have. If they think he's the future starter that information will be kept close to the vest. You will see the Packer management talk about really wanting to keep Rodgers, to drive the asking price high. Likewise, if Love is a bust...he's the next great QB for the Packers and they don't know how to keep him and Rodgers.
Just MHO!

If Rogers himself is willing to go "All in" i.e. being available for mini-camps, and working with these young receivers I would be WILLING to allow him to stay around for one more year.

In a perfect world, I would have trained him last year and got a bounty but as things are that is a possible last chance concession. However I am in favor of moving on from him if it's possible. The level of commitment isn't there anymore, and I'm tired of him holding the franchise hostage.

But he would have to understand that we were moving on from some of his favorite older players in order to prepare for his departure from the team.

It seems to me that older QBs cannot handle the cold weather in Green Bay. I'm talking the 5 degree weather, not the 30 degree. Favre against the Giants seemed to only be concerned with keeping warm. Rodgers last year against the 49ers performed poorly on a very cold day.

Maybe after age 35-37 the low temps affect blood flow to the muscles and affect performance.

Who is the last "old" QB that performed well in the Green Bay cold?

To answer your question: Bart Starr, December 31, 1967. 14-24 for 115 yards on a frozen field, 2 passing TDs, one rushing TD.

At 9 days shy of 34 years old, perhaps he's not old enough to be considered "old", though.

In another article I pointed out it's essentially pointless to do anything but back Love. He will either play his way to our hearts or play himself to the bench as all QB's do.

Whether Gute made a dumb call or not is pointless. It's done. Love shows ability, how much we will find out.

Getting mad at Jordan Love is like taking a hammer to swat a fly on your forehead and missing. It doesn't affect the fly but you get a nice bump on the head.("I showed him!") Love has done nothing wrong to deserve your vitriol. Nothing. He was drafted by the Packers and has played his role as a backup without causing problems.

Once the games start IN SEPTEMBER we will see some more tangible evidence of his skill, good or not so good. Until then we just need to sit back and watch the Aaron Rodgers drama play out.

Pretty much my viewpoint as well HH. Whether its Rodgers or Love, at least the Packers have options at QB which is more than most teams have. Most teams only have one starter in their QB stable and some teams have no legitimate starters available.

How many "starting" QBs have duh Bears had in the last 30 years? They would love to have our QB problems.

Is there a small contingent of the fan base that hates Love? Probably. Who cares? These are the people who live to rant, whether it is the choice of Love, or something else the team did or didn't do. Haters gonna hate. Ignore them. There was a much larger contingent of fans who were ready to move on from Rodgers last year, when Denver was willing to give the kitchen sink, a second and third mortgage on their stadium, and whatever else it would take to get Rodgers. Including choosing a coach that was close to Rodgers. During that time, there was a lot of debate on the topic. No one was hating, the question being whether Love was ready to become a starter. And one of the biggest arguments for staying with Rodgers was having trust in the professionals who watched Love every day, and, apparently, felt he wasn't ready. Now? It's becoming increasingly clear that the coaching staff is apparently not that great at evaluating talent. So, some people hate Love. The real question becomes, not why they feel this way, but why we should bother listening to them. That would have made a much more interesting article.

#12, I love you (come back please, in another uniform)

*P-Pasty, be the change you want to see on this board. :)

I think this is a pretty pointless article. Is it just meant to stir up anger in fans? Some want the 4 x MVP back, some want to see his butt out the door ASAP. The GM will decide when it's time to move on and the fans can be on board or not. That's the whole point of being a fan and having favorite players. Yes, many use football chats as a place to express their disdain for the decision making of others in a world where crystal balls do not exist, it's real money, not monopoly money and the fan has zero access to the behind-the-scenes work being done. Also zero access to what they see in practice.

It's funny that you're writing that fans should support Love, when most of the chats I read are Rodgers-haters desperately wanting to move on.

And, "off-season from hell?" Only if you somehow take business decisions personally. There are a lot of off seasons from hell around the league every year, but it's not GB. Having a possible hall of famer back with a healthy thumb, vs seeing if the replacement guy is up to the job is the opposite of hell. Every team has their ups and downs and GB fans are so spoiled by the Favre/Rodgers years they can't see there will be down years for every franchise. The NFL is built for parity, and the salary cap and the draft order force that. GB has been amazing at staying as close to contending as they have for the last 30 years.

Yes. Exactly how I see it. It’s gonna be fun going forward and always with just a wee bit of detachment to enjoy the ride. GPG!

I've never understood the whining about spending a first rounder on Love. Wolfe spent one to get Favre, Thompson spent one to get Rodgers, and those both turned out pretty favorable. Trade Rodgers for what you can get. If it's a couple of first rounders, then fantastic, if not, a 1 and a 2, or a couple of 2's is still not horrible, in order to get rid of the cap burden. The Pack can't spend another season with Love wallowing on the bench. Give the man a chance.

With the exception of Cobb and Lewis, try to keep the remaining core of offensive players and let them rally around the new QB.

"I've never understood the whining about spending a first rounder on Love."

My aging memory will try.

Some were upset at how much he cost, that he wasn't worth such a high pick or trading up to get him. Typical draft day debate.

Others, and I put myself here, were OK with picking a QB, even with a high pick, but there were two crying needs at the time, receiver and ILB, which went totally unaddressed in the draft and free agency. These were the pieces to put us over the top, we thought, but got nothing from the GM. Again, not a reflection on Love.

And then along comes hindsight. What would have happened these past couple years with a decent WR out there with Devante or this past season? And then Rodgers exposes his true California self, puts a premium on being the highest paid, and has a bad year... and one of the oldest truisms in football comes up again: the fans' most popular player on the team is the back-up QB. He's done no wrong and he is all potential and hope. (I guess I've missed all the hate for Love; our CHTV comrades certainly like him.)

Could a charitable, net savvy soul out there explain this line to me, please.

"I’ve seen a TON of that kind of thing, from people on Twitter who aren’t even eggs,..."

Eggs?

That's an account without a profile pic, so Twitter just uses an egg.

Trade Love , Trade Lazard.
You now have a re-load on Offense.
Why sign them if they want/threaten to leave.
Talk about a double standard people.

The headline to this piece is misleading. It's not time to love Love. It's not time to hate him either. It IS however, high time to see if he can be a plus starter, or not.

A lot of Tony Wilson's piece is about people who make up their minds too quickly and without any solid justification. That's true of many fans (sadly) - there will always be fans who make up their minds because of previous affiliation (they like the incumbent guy, or don't want change), with decisions based on at best, shifting sands and at worst, on no real information at all, other than their own pre-set prejudices. Normally, they will tell you they are 'realists', but their idea of realism is a quagmire.

To reiterate, at this time you shouldn't love Love or hate him, you should be looking forward to seeing whether he can 'carry the G' on the field, or not.

Incidentally, this criticism also applies to Love lovers - you don't really know what the Packers have in him yet. His last appearance has generated hope, but its too small a sample size to come to any solid conclusion. Unfortunately, the smarter fans who are waiting to see what the Packers have in Love, will always be beaten to the punch by fans who decide way too early and put their thoughts in print, using whimsical and poorly seated rationales.

This seems like a hit piece on both Rodgers and on parts of the fan base...but why?

Of course, we don't really know what we have in Jordan Love. He seems like a really good guy who has said and done the right things since being drafted, and he was well-prepared to play versus the Eagles (and probably, other games as well) judging by his (if limited snaps) play.

Looking back, I didn't think Rodgers was done going into that draft, and I think there's some revision in saying/implying that Rodgers ran McCarthy out of town. I guess he should still be here along with Dom Capers?

So, what to do now? I've really lost most of my emotion going into this offseason. Much as I would have liked to have seen Rodgers be a career Packer and win another SB, odds seem to be very low of both of those things materializing. Maybe, it's best for him to write whatever is in his final chapter as a player, elsewhere.
