The Lass Word: What The Numbers Say So Far
Packers are consistently inconsistent.
By KenLass

One month ago, as the 2023 season was about to start, Packers fans had a variety of opinions as to what kind of team this would turn out to be. The optimists were predicting playoffs and even division championships. The pessimists were forecasting a dismal four win season and a high draft position. Others were somewhere in between. We’ve reached just short of the quarter pole for the season so let’s take a look at what the Packers have actually been thus far. All stats are from Pro Football Reference and ESPN.
The most important stat of course is the won-loss record. Green Bay currently stands at 2-2. There are ten teams in the league with better records. There are eleven teams with the same record, and ten teams with a worse record. In the NFC six teams have a better record, four have the same, and five have worse marks. That would place the Packers squarely in the middle of the league in terms of record. If the playoffs were to begin today the Packers would not make it, by virtue of losing a tiebreaker to the Falcons based on head-to-head competition.
What about Jordan Love? What are the early returns on the Green Bay offense? Currently the team ranks in the middle or lowest one-third of the league in most categories, although they are tied for tenth in the most critical area, which is points scored. The Packers are 27th in total yards, 20th in yards per play, 27th in first downs, and 19th in passing yards. It should come as no shock that the team is among the worst in the NFL at running the ball, ranking 30th in rushing yards and 29th in yards per carry (3.3). Only the Bengals and Raiders have fewer yards on the ground.
Jordan Love is 15th in passing yards, 19th in yards per pass, tied for 5th in touchdown passes and 19th in passer rating. In other words, he’s middle of the pack. Remember before the season some pundits were predicting that if Love was only just average, the Packers would be a playoff team? Well so far, he’s been about as average as you can get. So maybe that bodes well. One area the first year signal caller needs to improve is completion percentage, where he ranks a dismal 34th.
There are two major factors hindering the Packers from finishing higher in offensive categories. One is injuries. You could argue that, Jordan Love aside, the five best players on the unit have missed time. Aaron Jones, Christian Watson, David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins and Zach Tom have all been hurt to varying degrees. The good news is all but Bakhtiari, who is on injured reserve, have a chance to be ready for Las Vegas on Monday night.
The other major problem is penalties. Green Bay ranks fifth in the league in number of offensive penalties. They’ve had 31 of them costing a total of 251 yards. And that only takes into account the ones which were accepted.
If you were hoping this would be the year the Joe Barry defense shows marked improvement, that has not yet manifested itself. As with the offense, the defense ranks middle or bottom third in most all areas. Green Bay is 20th in points allowed, 21st in total yards allowed, and 13th in yards per play allowed. Their four takeaways thus far rank tied for 20th. Just as last year, the Packers are better stopping the pass than stopping the run. They are 11th in passing yards allowed, but 30th in rushing yards given up. Only the Bengals and Broncos have given up more yards on the ground.
Green Bay is tied for 16th in sacks with eleven. Injuries to Jaire Alexander and De’Vondre Campbell haven’t helped. Quay Walker, Darnell Savage and Rasul Douglas have had impressive starts, but the defensive line of Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, TJ Slaton, Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks has been disappointingly porous. Head coach Matt LaFleur expressed frustration with the defense after the Detroit game and indicated there may be “philosophical changes” forthcoming.
So what does it all mean? Well, as the youngest team in the league, it was expected they would be inconsistent, and wow, is that ever true. In just four games the Packers have played very well, very mediocre, and very bad. They were mediocre in the first half against the Bears, then very good in the second half. They were very good in the first three quarters against the Falcons, then very bad in the fourth quarter. They were very bad against the Saints for three quarters, and then very good in the fourth. They were terrible in the first half against the Lions and mediocre in the second half.
It’s reasonable to assume the inconsistency will continue for at least the short term future. One thing for sure, you can’t say this team is predictable. Who knows how they will perform not only from game to game, but quarter to quarter. There’s so much of the season yet to play out. Perhaps they will gradually get better, tougher and more confident as the year rolls on. But in order for that to happen it is clear they must run the ball more effectively, and the defense has to play well enough to keep them in the game, while Love must improve his accuracy and completion rate.
So in summary, Green Bay’s start has not been a bust nor has it been a raging success. They are not the Bears, but they are also a far cry from the 49ers. They are middle dwellers. If you consider this season to be a rebuilding project, then middle of the pack is acceptable. The key is to see some sort of improvement along the journey. The effort against the Lions was a clear regression.
Whether you’re an optimist, a pessimist, or just a wait-and-see kind of fan, the rest of the year is going to be an interesting ride.

I agree. The play calling and personnel choices have been really bad. And even though there are clear signs of poor performance by some players, no changes are made and even during the game there are no real changes made in the play calls. What are they watching? Do they watch the game or call plays based on analytics only?

Do they scout their own games. We all see the repetitive bad calls and mental errors. LaFleur and staff need some outside critiques on in game breakdown within game context. We get exploited on both sides enough to learn how to counter attack. Or is it team identity?

Sorry, boys and girls, this fiasco lies at the feet of Gutedkunst. You have to have the horses to plow the field. The best situation for Love is to clean haus of the management crew. Murphy has been a disaster since the Brett retirement/return/ trade drama. Status quo will leave this organization spinning their wheels in place.

Murphy has been a disaster since the Brett retirement? You don't count winning a Super Bowl and being one of the top 4 winningest teams over that period as positive? And Gutey has drafted some great players. It looks like we might have a QB, some good young WRs, a promising young TE, some growing players on defense. I don't think this is on Gutey. Let him work through a few years post Rodgers and we'll see what he does with the team.
This is a young team that needs to grow and learn how to win. I'm not excited about the coaching staff when LaFleur says they are going to look at how other teams stop the run. Hey, you should have done that sooner than 4 games into the new season.
This team could be 3-1 if they had been healthy. True they don't have the depth on the offensive line that they had in the past. But every single team in the NFL is weak somewhere.
I think they have some players; they just need coaches that can get the best out of them.

Players, not plays as the saying goes. He's the guy procuring the talent. Too many whiffs along the way. Not buying the coverup.

Lafleur had good win losses for the first few years when he had a hog quarterback but does anyone seriously believe this guy is good enough to take a team to the title?
No adjustments (not even failing co ordinators) and total misuse of running game and defence….. yes as head coach he is responsible for all aspects.

Love is only completing 56 % of his passes he has to improve on that , a young team needs to be coached up well , that is not happening right now .

He completed 70 percent last week, rather surprisingly.

That was so hard for me to believe that I had to check. 23 for 36. Almost 64%. Still better than I thought. But when I started factoring in the 5 sacks and two interceptions, then the percentages change. Now it's 43 pass attempts, and 23 completions, which is a lot closer to what I thought: A couple of completions over 50%.
But man, some of those completions have been spectacular. If we can provide him with better protection and more time, he'll improve that percentage. And we could throw more shorter, quicker routes, too.

When given the green light to run hurry-up, he performed. Pass to run should be the prevailing play calls the rest of the season. There is no running game. Go West Coast Offense and try Dillon as a Fullback.

Mostly ignored is the fact that the Packers are the youngest team in the league. Young players make mistakes. Lets just face these facts:
1) The Packers will not make the playoffs this year. Keep in mind they didn't make the playoffs last year either with His Darkness at the helm along with his cult members.
2) While loaded with defensive talent, coordinator Joe Barry continues to find ways to allow opponents to control the line of scrimmage.
3) The team likely will improve as the season moves on. There will be a few more wins and certainly some losses. This season is a bit of a toss out. Once the salary cap is in line the team will be more experienced and then signing a few affordable veterans here and there will work, ala Ted Thompson.
Other than Barry I'm not pointing fingers. But if this continues into 2024, I will.

You're playing a little loose with the definition of a fact

The Packers are the youngest team in the league. That is a fact. That is the fact that I based my argument on.
Sorry you didn't see it.

Snark doesn't work well when you've got evidence in plain text:
"Lets just face these facts: 1) The Packers will not make the playoffs this year."
I don't know why we gotta make this a big production. You led off with a statement which is objectively not a fact. Hence my comment... nothing more, nothing less.

I’m so glad “His Darkness and cronies” are gone too. Those 13:3 seasons sure did suck to watch.

The reason why those 13:3 seasons ultimately failed to take the next step often had to do directly with his darkness's failure to play as a member of the team and trust all of his team mates.

and it had nothing to do with this MLF guy who shouldn't be a head coach??

throwing 30+ yards downfield into triple coverage when the game is on the line and you only need 7 yards to move the sticks when there's literally two open targets within 15 yards of the LOS is MLF's fault?
Refusing to throw to a young player for weeks on end because he dropped a pass is MLF's fault? Refusing to go back to a vet because he fumbled in the 1st Q in a must-win-or-go-home game is MLF's fault?

the one constant with this year and last is MLF at the helm...so expect the same result.

Yes, this! I liked Hodag's comment except for the dig on Rodgers who only won 13 games 3 seasons in a row before breaking his thumb last year. Right now, it is looking highly likely that Rodgers has been carrying this team, with its middling to poor defense, for years and years. It's no wonder they couldn't get far in the playoffs with Adams and a bunch of nobodies to catch passes. No productive TEs for years. No really productive WRs beyond Adams for several years. A great RB and Rodgers and Adams carried GB. It's no surprise this year's draft had 3 of the first 4 picks guys who catch passes. And then 2 more later in the draft.
I'm tired of Rodgers' bashing. He didn't elevate his game in the playoffs like we hoped, but he got us there year after year and for sure nobody else stepped up big in the playoffs. Aaron Jones would fumble, the defense wouldn't hold . . . and on and on.

These play makers were all drafted by Ted. Who is the next All-Pro on this squad? Bhak has now left the ledger, leaving a zero behind.

"They are middle dwellers"".
They're 2-2. I wouldn't call them middle dwellers as much as people who live on both sides, the good and bad. All those consecutive scoreless quarters, all those 3 and outs. Yet, when you see guys making some of the plays they make, like in the 4th quarter against New Orleans, you get a glimpse of what's under the hood.
When they are good, they are very, very good, and when they are bad, they are horrid. There hasn't been a lot of in between.

You don't win championships with whiffs from the upper rounds of the draft. The over-payment on the all-in was not necessary if you hit on performers and get your number one picks off the bench.

The 1st quarter is about planning, preparedness and team health. After that, it's on the coaches to adjust to what their opponents are trying to do.
The youngsters and new QB have been ok and look like they're improving as they move along. They haven't been the reason for mediocrity.
It's the experienced vets who've been responsible for where they're at right now.
Not even any mention of the special teams in Ken's article. The kicker has been a pleasant surprise. The rest of the units, not so much.
The NFL requires a whole team. The youngster are a very little part of it.

Give me a break...very few fans, and certainly no one in the media would have thought the Packers would be 2 and 2 after 4 games.
This is an extremely young and inexperienced team, and it will be an up and down season. It is the season for youngsters to gain experience and for the front office to see what they have & dont have on the roster. This upcoming draft will be crucial and with another home run draft plugging holes this team will compete every game next season & will be playoff worthy.
