30th Anniversary of 1996 Packers
It's been 30 years since Brett Favre led the Packers to their 3rd Super Bowl championship. The 1996 team was one of the most dominating teams in the Super Bowl era.

In 2026, it will have been 30 years since one of the best and underappreciated teams in recent NFL history, the 1996 Green Bay Packers finished off their dominant season with a Super Bowl championship.
For Green Bay, it was the first Super Bowl appearance and title in 29 years, which felt like a lifetime to fans dating back to the Vince Lombardi era.
From the time Lombardi retired to the hiring of both Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren and acquisitions of Brett Favre and Reggie White, it felt like this franchise would never reach the mountain top like they did with the first two Super Bowl-winning teams.
Under Holmgren and Wolf, the Packers had four seasons of winning records, three playoff appearances and four playoff wins. And then in 1996, it all came together. The Packers had a dominating regular season, going 13-3, earning the NFC’s top seed for the first time in franchise history and then winning all three playoff games by at least 14 points.
Favre won his second straight NFL MVP award, leading the NFL with 39 touchdown passes, which was the 3rd most in NFL history at the time. LeRoy -Butler and Desmond Howard joined Favre as 1st-team All Pro and White was named 2nd-team All Pro.
Howard set an NFL record with 875 punt return yards and had a team record three punt returns for touchdowns during the regular season. He then had two more kick returns for touchdowns in the playoffs. His five returns for scores in a season is the most in franchise history.
The 1996 Packers would be the last of 13-straight NFC winning Super Bowl teams, after their 1997 team could not repeat the feat in Super Bowl XXXII.
Thirty years later, maybe because of the teams the Packers followed in winning their Super Bowl (three Cowboys teams and 1994 49ers) and the 1997 team not going back-to-back, it seems like the 1996 team does not get its due for being one of the best Super Bowl winning teams of all time.
Just how great of a season did the 1996 team have?
They led the NFL in scoring, scoring defense, yards allowed on defense and punt return yards. During the Super Bowl era, the 1996 Packers and 1972 Dolphins are the only two teams to lead the NFL in scoring and points allowed.
Since 1990, when the NFL expanded the playoffs to 12 teams (and 14 since 2020), there are several finite lists that include the 1996 Packers.
- 1 of 6 teams to lead league in scoring and win Super Bowl
- 1 of 9 teams to lead league in scoring defense and win Super Bowl
- 1 of 9 teams to lead league in yards allowed and win Super Bowl
- 1 of 13 teams to be #1 defense in both yards and points (4 won Super Bowl)
- 6th best scoring differential since 1990
- 7 wins by 25+ points, most in NFL history (tied with 1961 Houston Oilers)

It was a magical season starting with Favres addiction and prediction of don’t bet against us winning the Super Bowl . Discovering Desmond Howard who was about to be cut until he returned a punt for a TD during pre season . Injuries at one point brought in Andre Rison who made some key plays in the playoffs . Just outstanding to watch a Packers team again that you knew you were most likely going to win every Sunday . Sure hope the Packers honor them this season at a home game . Dallas would be appropriate at Lambeau .

I grew up in the Lombardi years, and that Long Dry Spell from 1972 -1992 really had me thirsty. Wolf,Holmgren, Favre, Reggie was a mighty satisfying drink. The people in charge clearly understood Free Agency better than some other teams early on, and they were able to put a really good team together. They didn't panic and burn things down when we were stopped by the Cowboys.
The next year, most of the team returned and lost in the Super Bowl. Holmgren left. We've been to the Super Bowl only once since then. True, we have put solid teams on the field, and we're always in the hunt, so it's not like the seasons where we had some really horrible teams and no hope.

Same here, LH. That long, long, long dry spell before the truly magical '95-'96 season had to be endured to be appreciated. IMHO, today's fans' need for "Instant Gratification" expectations are preventing them from enjoying the season. I know I've changed with the years and kind of smile at remembering how I'd be upset for days after a GB loss. Now I just appreciate the wins and try to not let the losses bother me. That incredible season leading to the '96 Superbowl win just felt so "pre-ordained", Every game you just felt confident that this team was on an unstoppable path to the Lombardi trophy. These days I just try to appreciate every contest. I have hope for this season and I think we've got a pretty talented bunch this year. If (I know, it's a big if) MLF can get these players to believe in each other and play to the final whistle of every quarter this could be a special season of its own. We shall see. GJPG!!

Oh kindred spirit, LH, yes indeed that SB win was cathartic. I remember we were at Disney World with the kids during the second game of the season, a Monday night against Philly. I couldn't believe what I was seeing from the O. Another memory from that season is listening to the radio broadcast of the Divisional round win over the 49ers. Leotis Jr was playing youth hockey at the time and the Packer game was broadcast of the PA in the rink. Watching the Super Bowl win as a family was surreal. Tears. Joy. Exhilaration.
Marking time with memories of the kids growing up. I'd really be okay with some playoff and Super Bowl memories with my grandkids now, thankyouverymuch.

It was finally fun, not a chore, to watch a Packer game again. After the 70s and 80s I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop. It made all those years disappear and I thought they'd never return.

I remember the season well. I was serving in the AF in Japan in 93. That whole season I would wake up at 2:00 am to watch the noon time games. The later ones I would catch the beginning before going to work. I was fortunate that Armed Forces Network showed a lot of Packer games.
I watched the SB with my son and it was magical.
I always liked watching Favre play. He made the game fun to watch. I wish he could have left on better terms. I will not get into it.

I never thought of that team as underappreciated. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a Packer fan, but I think they get their due. Brett Favre is a legend, and that was his championship year. I've never seen a QB as dominant as he was for a few years there. They had a lot of injuries at WR and TE that year, but Favre always found someone to throw the ball to, and if he didn't, he could run for a first down. He had a rifle for an arm.
I was surprised to read in this article that Reggie White was only a second team All Pro that year. I looked it up, and the two first team All Pro DEs were Alfred Williams of the Broncos and Bruce Smith of the Bills. If you're just going by sacks, Williams had 13 that year, Smith had 13.5, and Reggie had 8.5, so well, okay I guess.

The '96 Packers were a great team. I remember the game very well. Remembering them makes me realize how far away the recent Packers teams have been from those great Holmgren/Favre/Reggie White teams of the mid/late '90s. I always felt like they were going to win. Thanks, Since '61

It seems like they were a team of destiny, but I dunno, do you think they would've won the Super Bowl if Reggie White had blown out his knee? I'm thinking maybe not.

Wolf called the 1996 season "A fart in the wind" after losing to Denver in the 1997 season, not getting back to back championships. I think that's a tad harsh, but had they beat Denver, those teams would have been looked at as some of the best ever... PERIOD!
I still believe had we played that Broncos team 10 times we beat them 9 out of 10. But still, the 1996 team WAS one of the best in history IMO.

"I still believe had we played that Broncos team 10 times we beat them 9 out of 10."
Denver never should have been as big of an underdog in that game. I think it was mainly because of the NFC's dominance in the SB over the previous 10-12 years.
Consider:
Elway...HOF
T. Davis...HOF
Sharpe...HOF
G. Zimmerman...HOF
Atwater...HOF
Denver was a really, really good team that year, as evidenced that they won the SB again the following year. Green Bay was also a really, really good team that year. No way EITHER team would have won 9 out of 10 games against each other.
The two best teams in the NFL played in the Super Bowl that year. Green Bay just came up a little short. It doesn't diminish their greatness one bit.
