Packers Practice Roundup, August 20, 2024
The offensive line held up in Tuesday's practice. No pads were worn.

I was curious as to how practice would go after the disappointing performance at Denver on Sunday. Today's practice was done in shorts and helmets and last 90 minutes or so.
INJURIES:
Edgerrin Cooper will return to practice today after three weeks out. He’ll be limited. MarShawn Lloyd still out. Jordan Morgan still doing indy only today, but TBD on doing 11-on-11 against the Ravens Thursday in joint practice. Schneidman
New Packers injuries: AJ Dillon: stinger, Andre Dillard: shoulder, Tyler Davis: shoulder, Preston Smith: illness, Spencer Waege: concussion. Resigned: Henry Pearson. Jarveon Howard released. [Howard was injured, but packers do not list this move as a waived/injured move, so it sounds like there will be no injury settlement. TGR] Schneidman
Still injured: Keshawn Banks MarShawn Lloyd. Herman
I’m told Dillard’s injury is not expected to keep him out long. All injuries at this time of year can impact the cuts and who does/does not make the 53. Cuts are a week from today. Demovsky
PERSONNEL:
We will see what happens in team drills but in walk-throughs Rhyan began at RG with Monk then rotating in. [Monk rotated in during the team period and got reps with the starters. TGR] Bretl
The No. 1 secondary remains Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes at corner, Keisean Nixon in the slot, and Bullard and McKinney as the safeties. However, there were quite a few snaps with Stokes and Nixon as the corners, Bullard at safety, and McKinney and Evan Williams as the safeties. At one point, Alexander and Stokes were corners, Bullard was the slot, and McKinney and Williams were the safeties. Huber
Starters in team: Love - Jacobs - Reed - Watson - Wicks - Kraft - Walker - EJ - Myers - Rhyan - Tom. Defense: Gary - Slaton - Clark - Enagbare - Quay - McDuffie - Stokes - Nixon - Jaire - McKinney - Bullard. Herman
OFFENSE:
Good 2-minute drill from Jordan Love, completing his first 5 passes for 37 yards to move the Packers into range for game-tying fg. Five different targets. 5 yards to Musgrave, out 10 yards to Jacobs, check 3 yards to Doubs, stop 7 yards to Watson, stop 12 yards to Kraft, check. [Love went 15 for 21 on the day, per Bill Huber. TGR] Wood
Offense has three chances for two-point conversion. 1) Clark pressure, INC for Watson back middle with Nixon in coverage 2) Jaire PBU vs. Doubs at front left pylon 3) Quay tips it up at goal line and Elgton catches it. Offense takes about 10 minutes to push him in and Zach Tom delivers a stone-cold stunner to celebrate. (So, 0 for 3. TGR) 2) First deep ball of the day has great touch. Love to Doubs for 30+ down the left sideline over Stokes. 3) And now a laser from Love to Doubs for a big completion down the right side. McKinney would’ve taken Romeo’s head off in a game. Schneidman
We all know from last season Kraft’s ability to pick up yards after the catch and he showcased that today, turning two catches around the line of scrimmage into 10-plus yard gains. He looks really fast right now. Bretl
Jordan Love finished period hitting Tucker Kraft for 17 yards on drag. In period, Love completed all 4 passes for 77 yards. Nice, early bounce back from Friday in Denver. 2) Tucker Kraft just took a check down from Jordan Love, and I’m not sure how far it would’ve fine in a game, but let’s just say the young TE has a gear that is UNREAL in the open field. There’s a reason he calls himself “the YAC guy.” Wood
Two minute drill. 1’s up first. Down 3. Flat to Musgrave. Short gain. Clock ticks. Jacobs over the middle. First down. Clock ticks. Doubs short gain but out of bounds. Jacobs short gain from Love but out of bounds. First down. 41 seconds left. 1st and 10. Down 3. Ball on opposing 40. Little screen to Kraft. First down but clock ticks. Clocked ball. 2nd down. 15 seconds left. Ball on the 29. No timeouts. Jaire and Watson get tangled. Incomplete. Looked like Love was throwing it away anyway. Love back shoulder to Reed down the left sideline. Reed couldn’t locate it. Incomplete. Field goal attempts upcoming. Herman
DEFENSE:
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Hale 0/1 Joseph 1/1 Carlson 1/1
Today: Joseph 2/5 Hale 3/5 Carlson 4/5
Camp totals:
Anders Carlson: 54/67 - 80.6%
Greg Joseph: 54/69 - 78.3%
Alex Hale: 14/21 - 66.7%. Herman
On the practice field this summer, Carlson is 53-of-66 (80.3 percent) and Joseph is 53-of-67 (79.1 percent). With preseason added, Carlson is 55-of-68 (80.9 percent) and Joseph is 54-of-69 (78.3 percent). Huber
Kicker competition is playing out so terribly. Anders Carlson clearly hasn't taken a step, and Greg Joseph probably lost himself the competition over the last week. The third kickers they've had on the roster haven't been nearly good enough. 2) We’ve got to stop doing this. 18 kickers were over 85 percent on FGs last year. I truly don’t care about Mason’s career average. Kruse
MISCELLANEOUS:
The Packers had a third down conversion rate of 28% on third and 10+ yards to go last season, best in NFL; League Avg: 17%. Inside Edge reported by Bill Huber
LaFleur says it's "to be determined" if the starters will play on Saturday. Bretl
Andy Herman's Grades from the Broncos game:
5 Best Offense:
+0.20: Caleb Jones, Luke Tenuta, Ellis Meriweather; +0.15 Malik Heath, Kadeem Telfort.
5 worst offense:
-0.80 Tyler Davis, -0.70 Sean Clifford, -0.60 Royce Newman, -0.50 Jacob Monk, -0.30 Grant DuBose/Lecitus Smith (tied).
5 Best Defense:
+0.50 Brenton Cox, +0.40 Christian Welch, Robert Rochell +0.30, +0.25 Corey Ballentine and Eric Wilson.
4 worst defense:
-0.60 Spencer Waege, -0.50 Lucas Van Ness, -0.45 LJ Davis, -0.40 Ralen Goforth, 8 tied
Bonus: -0.10 Andre Dillard, +0.10 Travis Glover. Herman
[Andy Herman notes that Jones and Tenuta played just 17 snaps late in the game against 3rd and 4th stringers. Andy listed the grades for all of the offensive linemen who played (except for Sean Rhyan) and those grades add up to a negative 0.85. That does not seem bad enough to be congruent with inept line play in the game. Rhyan actual grade was not disclosed, but it must be somewhere between +0.10 and -0.25: otherwise, Rhyan would have been listed in the 5 Best or 5 Worst players. Mr. Herman also had other interesting comments. He notes that against a good but not great left tackle like Garett Bolles, Van Ness can bull rush until the cows come home and he is going to get no where. Bolles stoned Van Ness every time. Van Ness was credited with a pressure, but it was on a play where he was not blocked at all by design.

With Preston Smith out with an illness, the replacement starter was Kingsley Enagbare, not Lucas Van Ness. I have been complaining that the coaches never let LVN play against the starters, a trend that continued Tuesday, and feared what he might look like when he played starters. No doubt LVN has gotten reps against the starters. I seen almost no tweets about Rasheed Walker - I guess he isn't getting beat in practice too much.
Despite not looking good against Denver, Monk got reps with the one as he rotated against the starters with Rhyan. Justis Mosqueda noted that Newman had been getting number one reps, so perhaps Monk overtook Newman.
The coaches separated the starters from the second and third stringers, moving the backups to the far side of the field. That's why there are no tweets about the backups as the media choose to concentrate on the starters. No pads. To find information on the defense, read the one one one and team drill stuff.
I wanted a photo of Tucker Kraft, who turned heads during practice with newfound speed, but the photographers did not cooperate.
The media is gushing over the news that former offensive line coach James Campen was at practice and in GB gear because he is going to do some work for the Packers as a scout. Now, that is good, and I do think he was a good OL coach. That said, Campen will be working out of his basement in Florida (that is, remotely), so perhaps he might help in 2025, but not so much in 2024 unless he sticks around for a few days and attends some practices.

Hard to tell too much without pads. Starting week 1 as injury free as possible deserves to be a goal.
Count me among those stymied by LVN not adding pass rush techniques; we should figure he's just keeping it under wraps, hidden from media? Lol. #55 isn't 100% since his knee injury according to some at TC, maybe this creates opportunity for Cox?

Thanks, TGR!
Sounds like the O-line does better without pads, and not playing for real. I think if the starters get clicking together, we'll have a serviceable O-line while they're healthy. Too bad serviceable is a couple steps down from any goals I was hoping for this season.
With a new D this season, the O can't start out just feeling their way. They're going to be playing a hungry Philly team that will make them pay for unpreparedness.
