By BrianMaafi

Name: Dayo Odeyingbo
School: Vanderbilt
Year: Senior
Position: Edge
Measurements: 6’5 276
STATS:
General Info:
Attended Carrollton Ranchview High School in Irving, TX. Also competed in track in field in High School. First name is Temidayo. Born in Brooklyn, New York. Parents are from Nigeria. Older brother played defensive line at Vanderbilt. Dayo played in all 12 games as a frosh as a defensive end. Logging 2.5 sacks and one int. As a Sophomore he played in 12 games and started 10. 6.5 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. He played in all 12 games again, starting 11. For his Senior year he played and started all 8 games. Had his best season with 5.5 sacks and 9 QB pressures.
Positional Skills:
Positives:
He is a long and lean 276 pounds. The Vanderbilt product is very versatile. Dayo played primarily defensive end, but also lined up at 5-tech, 1-tech, 3-tech, and outside linebacker. Odeyinbo has also shown he can be effective running stunts. Very long arms at 35”. Which allows him to set the edge against the run. He uses those long levers of his to grab running backs from behind. For how big and long he is, he shows surprising athleticism on film. He shows quick feet on film, able to start outside with his rush and quickly switch to an inside rush. Shows strong hands on film being able to stack and shed offensive linemen. Odeyinbo shows very good balance, he rarely ends up on the ground. On film he shows an ability to get into the back field and disrupt the running game. He does a good job of keeping his head on a swivel and finding where the ball is. When he plays low, he can really knife himself into the backfield. Shows some strength on film to be able to push blockers back into the pocket. He has shown a little bit of an arm over maneuver and a juke which have shown some effectiveness. Also shows on film an ability to work his hands independently. He is a good form tackler as well, once he gets a hold of a guy they rarely get away.
Negatives:
Tore his Achilles before the senior bowl in January, so right now his return to play time line is unknown. Dayo is still a bit raw in regards to his pass rushing technique and moves. He will need more development there. Because of his height he really needs to keep his pad level low, if he does not it will be a lot easier for offensive linemen to block him. He has shown some inconsistencies with his pad level on film. Explosiveness off the snap is just ok. Odeyingbo’s speed as well is just ok. The long pass rusher does not show a lot of bend on film. Needs to develop his speed to power rush, which if developed could be very good for him. Need more development of his pass rush moves and working a plan of attack. It is doubtful that he could handle snaps at the 1-tech at the NFL level.
Fit with the Packers:
Odeyingbo’s fit with the Packers defense is great. He fits the type of edge rushers that they like. He is long, strong, and sets a good edge. A good athlete as well. He just needs development. The potential is there for him to be a mix of Z and Preston. He has long arms and body like Preston, but strong hands and versatility like Z. While he is not an elite athlete, he can have a big effect on offenses with further development of his pass rush game and working on staying low off the snap. For his size his explosiveness and speed are still good. His health and recovery will also be key. Achilles' injuries are not as bad as they used to be, but they are not to the level of ACL surgeries yet. They used to be seen as almost career ending. If not for the injury and the weak overall edge class, he could have gone in the 3rd-4th range. Now the Packers should be able to get him in the 5th-6th round range. If his Achilles checks out, he would be worth the ‘redshirt’ year for the Packers. They could do something similar to what they did with Stepaniak. Put him on the PUP, activate him at the end of the season so he could get a few weeks of practice in, then back on the IR. The Packers can afford this since their top 3 edge rushers are set and he wouldn’t play much as a rookie anyway. The Packers would probably also ask him to drop a few pounds and hopefully that would add a little speed and agility to his game like with Rashawn Gary. Preston Smith is not long for the roster so Odeyingbo could be the #3 edge in year 2 and really give the Packers a three headed monster at edge.

Not sure how many pounds he has to drop. With his frame it might be easier to add 20 lbs. and turn him into a DL.

Too slim for a DL that we could actually use.
Maybe lose a few lbs and convert him to an edge rusher we have no need for.
Can he play corner?
I like his length!

The value of an edge rusher is 2nd next to QB. If you dont draft and develop them, you have to seriously overpay for them. Preston doesnt show signs of being a difference maker and the writing is on the wall 2021 will likely be his last on the team. Investing in a pass rusher anywhere in the draft (even the 1st round) is likely to happen in this draft. This is a deep CB draft and with the return of King, we do not HAVE to draft a CB in the 1st round.

Assuming Preston Smith is on a one-year deal, the Packers need cheap draft talent to fill the void of his loss in 2022. I like the idea of getting a talented red-shirt OLB player in 21 to rehab on IR and learn system before competing for backup role in 22 when he will be needed. Dayo would be a great get in 5th if BG doesn't use the later picks as trade capital to move up elsewhere. The Packers simply cannot squander their extra picks to reach for other players. They need as many draft picks as possible to fill holes in the 22 roster when many players become free agents or get released due their cap hits. If there ever was a time for BG to emphasize TT's draft and develop plan, it will be this year. Packers cannot overspend on FAs or defer salaries to the point of handcuffing future teams with large amounts of dead money. They need to fill as many roster spots as they can with cap friendly draft picks.

100% correct! Every time we trade up....we are forgoing a quality player to draft and develop. Last year the 4th round pick we gave up to go get Love could have been TE Brycen Hopkins, C Tyler Biadasz, WR Tyler Johnson, CB L'Jarius Snead or OG Michael Onwenu. Any one of these guys would be able to step in and help us this year
If we do lose picks to trade up, we damn better find 3 or players either a) veterans willing to play for next to nothing to chase a SB or b) undrafted free agents that can not just make the roster, but step in and play when there is an injury.

No- we do not need another edge rusher. He's a 3rd rd prospect. And to slow. I say Gute double dips at the CB position. ( in the 3rd.) Even a safety /LB type works.

Oren Burks 2.0. Tweener with a major injury from a football powerhouse

Pass. Vandy is not a football program that produces. Burks didn't pan out... I had him as a 7th rd, but Gute wasted a 3rd. Ouch!

I agree on Burks...but you do not refuse to draft players b/c you had a problem with a previous draft choice from that school. Casey Hayward played at Vandy. I agree Burks was a terrible pick (7th rounder) Thats the problem with putting too much value on RAS. I like this guy from Vandy and would take him starting in the 5th due to his injury history. But with so many other options at the edge this year, I have to think the Packers may look elsewhere to fill the Edge opening

I'd rather the Pack FA sign the chick place kicker from Vandy, she might improve our ridiculous ST. This SEC school is a football bust, avoid like Covid. Oren Burks a brilliant example of poor drafting.

I don't like edge Rushers. But The more I look for guys at LB. The more I think that Jayson Oweh looks like CM3. He so raw and fast. With the right coach. This guy will be an All-pro.
