Highsmith Reportedly Lobbying For Perryman

Draft Insider Tony Pauline reports the Packers' Senior Personnel Executive is pushing for the Miami linebacker.

Tony Pauline from DraftInsider.net, who we've had on Packer Transplants and who is a truly plugged in guy when it comes to the draft, advances the "there’s been a buzz about Perryman among the Green Bay braintrust" note from Peter King yesterday.

From Pauline:

I’m told Alonzo Highsmith, senior personal director for the Green Bay Packers, is pushing hard for Denzel Perryman at the bottom of round one. The team would then push Clay Matthews to the outside. The belief is Green Bay still values a cornerback with that first pick and I hear Eric Rowe continues to be in the mix, but don’t dismiss Perryman.

This makes a world of sense as Highsmith is a Miami alum who tends to fall in love with Miami players. Obviously, this doesn't mean he'll be the pick. Ted has made it abundantly clear through the years that he isn't running a democracy but a benevolent dictatorship. But if Perryman is still on the board when the Packers pick Thursday night, you can bet he will be hearing a good deal from his Senior Personnel Executive.

Ugh not at 30! Maybe at 62. The hits and run D would be nice, but I'm tired of fearing pass catching RBs and TEs on 3rd down. We Need someone who can COVER!

Ditto. Kind of tired of seeing Hawk three steps behind RB's and TE's as they crossed the middle. Need an ILB who can cover. Use the nose tackle to stuff the run (isn't that how a 3-4 is supposed to work?). Once a RB gets to the second level, he's already gained 5 yards. That's no good.

I don't understand the "Ahem." Yes, I read the article to which you link. There are indeed 6 more rounds plus the UDFAs. It is a fact. But I have no idea why criticizing the idea of taking a player with 3rd round ability in the late first round should meet with anything other than approbation. If you are suggesting that TT is capable of making up for another underwhelming 1st round pick with his selections in the next 6 rounds and UDFA, I'd agree, but it really isn't a practice I want to advocate.

Bearmeat, I agree completely!

Agreed. My ideal scenario would be a DT in the first, either Eddie Goldman or Jordan Phillips, and LB Stephone Anthony in the second.

I coach high school linebackers so I stumbled upon http://www.udrills.tv/ which shows lots of position drills that they use at the university of Miami. Several of the linebacker drills feature their players in practice. Kind of cool to see Perryman in a drill setting. Would not be mad at all if the Packers drafted him.

ok, So who exactly told him that? Was it the Domino's delivery guy?

Rarely do we ever hear anything of who the Packers like, and rarely anything specific about a player.

I'm not saying they don't like him or that its not true, but I am skeptical with the information. After all, this is the week of deception.

Fire HIGHSMITH! A 2 down ILB when a 3 down is needed.? History and Wolf told you that size and speed are needed in Cold weather. Capers wants Anthony and I want McKinney. Mathews is freed up again. Get smart people. All are best LB's had Size. The Great ones had speed.

I want Kendricks, because I think he is the best 3 down ILB.

Currently I believe you are correct, but maybe Anthony has higher ceiling?

I like Anthony as well.. I think they are very similar.

Honestly, at the end of the draft if they add Kendricks, Anthony, or Perryman it will be an upgrade.

Don't rule out Shaq Thompson either.

The mock I saw with us getting Anthony in the first and Rollins in the second reminded me of Christmas...but better.

Honestly, i would be really happy with that.

I really like Rollins. I think he could be special. He is raw, but he has a ton of upside.

Well today is the start of a 3 day Christmas like event for the NFL. I consider the Draft Christmas for Football.

Yes it is the Christmas of football. As long as White doesn't go to the Bears or Vikes.....being from WV it would hurt my soul.

Smells like misinformation to me.

I think you'll be able to get all the ILB's in round 2. This is prime trade down opportunity. If there are no good corners or D-linemen left at #30, attempt to trade down. If one of the corners is still there at #25, trade up.

McKinney is a 3 down but needs to improve on it. Can't see Kendricks because he will not take on blocks. But if you want Kendricks, it would move Mathews back outside. It will protect against next years FA's. And they will get their money. Bonus money too. ( Perry does do better behind Mathews . ) So if Mathews is the ILB why is MM asking for HELP? I have a feeling there will be a lot of players on the IR next year. I just feel the packers could have been a dynasty with Taller and Faster players. A trade here and there could have done wonders.

Agree with the trade down sonomaca. But which CB's do you think are worth the trade up ?

Stockholder can you direct us to the McKinney game video that would make us believe he is better than a late 3rd round pick ?

I've been on the Perryman bandwagon for a long time! Guy is going to be a stud at the next level.

Can he play all 3 downs? I think that's the question. But I love the way he hits. Ferocious.

He can play zone coverage fairly well from everything I've seen. He seems assignment sound, but his tackling ability and instincts are ridiculous.

I know McKinney and Perryman both think they'll go in the first but c'mon. They won't.

I would say that IF GB takes an ILB in round one they don't see him as a 2-down one dimensional run stuffer.

But we shall see, my brethren.
And "sistren".
