Hello Wisconsin: The Future is Bright in Green Bay

It may have been a tough end to the year, but there's so much to be excited about.

I don’t really feel like dwelling on the Packers’ heartbreaking loss to the 49ers this past week. It’s well-worn territory by now, and so much has happened since then anyway.

So instead, let’s focus on everything else there is to be excited about, because at the conclusion of this season, the Packers’ title window has officially just opened.

There are all kinds of reasons for excitement, not the least of which is the progress made by quarterback Jordan Love throughout this season.

For the final two months of the season, Jordan Love was statistically the best quarterback in football. It’s unfair to expect that to be the standard for him moving forward, but it does show just how much talent and potential he has.

Love was unequivocally a top-10 quarterback in football for the whole year, and began to push top five territory. In a year that was all about determining whether Love was the guy for the franchise moving forward, Love made it a clear “yes” and then some. I always felt Love would be capable of performing at least as well as Rodgers had in 2022, but I never expected him to approach MVP-level performance for a two-month stretch. He’s only going to keep getting better and better over the coming years.

There are also the young offensive skill players. The wide receiving corps went from being a massive deficiency to a major strength, thanks to the drafting and development of players like Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, and Jayden Reed (and Christian Watson if he can ever stay on the field), and the tight ends (Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft) show a ton of promise.

The offensive line has some young pieces that may be in place for quite some time (Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker) as well as one veteran cornerstone (Elgton Jenkins), even if the other positions and players may have some question marks.

The defense is packed with talent, and while the middle of the field can still be fortified, there's a lot to like about the pieces in place on that side of the ball. They just need to be put in position to succeed by their coach.

Speaking of coaching, perhaps the biggest reason for optimism occurred Wednesday, when the announcement came that the Packers would not be retaining Joe Barry as their defensive coordinator for the 2024 season.

Barry never should have been retired and was retained at least once too many times. His very presence for the 2024 season would have put a ceiling of losing in the second round of the playoffs on this team. It’s too young, talented, and potentially explosive to allow itself to be limited by a coach with the massive deficiencies that Joe Barry has repeatedly displayed over the course of his career in three stops as a coordinator.

With Barry gone, the Packers have the most attractive coordinator opening in the league. This is a team with nearly limitless potential. They already are seen as a playoff team, and that’s before the upcoming draft, in which they have three picks in the top 50.

Good coaches are going to want to come along for the ride on which the Packers are about to embark. It could be a special few seasons or more that are coming our way.

Next season, the Packers will enter with championship hopes. They were a year ahead of schedule already this year. Now it’s time for them to take the next step.

With a strong defensive coordinator hiring and another solid offseason of draft acquisitions, there’s nobody this team can’t beat and no reason to think they can’t be hoisting a Lombardi Trophy in February 2025.

I can’t wait.

Wisconsin Beer of the Week

It’s been a heavy month or so of eating and drinking, so every now and then it’s nice to drink something light and bubbly.

Table beers are a style of beer that are lower in alcohol content and designed for socializing. You could easily drink table beers all day long, and they’re quite pleasant; they almost have the mouthfeel of champagne.

The good people at 1840 Brewing Company had a couple different table beers come out in 2023, one of which was the aptly named Table Book. This Belgian table beer with cashmere hops had the light sweetness of a belgian ale with the thin, bubbly drinkability of a table beer. At just 3.5 percent ABV, you have no concerns about this one getting you toasted.

If you’ve never given a table beer a shot before, they’re absolutely perfect for summer days sitting out on the patio and sharing conversations with friends. Grab one from your liquor store or local brewery this summer.

My favorite moments from the 2023 Packers season

Now that the Packers are officially eliminated from the playoffs, here’s a quick retrospective of some of my favorite moments this season.

  • Sweeping the Bears: The Packers extended their winning streak over the Bears to 10 and expanded their all-time lead in the franchise rivalry. Jordan Love absolutely slaughtered Chicago’s defense in both games they played, sending Chicago fans into hysterics that the guy they slandered all offseason was capable of doing this to them and will continue to do so for years.

  • New Orleans comeback: It wasn’t a pretty game, but Jordan Love’s first fourth quarter comeback was certainly a game to remember. Watching the Packers come back and overcome adversity, something they’ve not done a lot of in recent years, and it gave the sense that this team may have a different mentality.

  • Ruining the Lions’ Thanksgiving: The Detroit Lions were finally playing a Thanksgiving game of some consequence in a year where they were expected to be contenders. But thanks in part to a waxing gibbous moon, the Packers stunned the nation and laid the smackdown on a Lions team that had depantsed them at home earlier in the season. Not even Fox denying Jordan Love his well-earned turkey leg could put a damper on this one.

  • Taking down the defending champs: The Packers’ matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs was essentially a meaningless game at that point of the season, but there’s no denying there was a playoff atmosphere. With snowflakes lightly falling and Taylor Swift in the house, the Packers thoroughly controlled the game against the defending champions and made a big statement right after beating the Lions that they were evolving into a force to be reckoned with.

  • Jordan Love’s remarkable growth: We saw some significant improvement and evolution from Love throughout the year. He started off strong in Chicago, and after a really rough October that resulted in some people beginning to mock the Packers drafting a quarterback early in round one (JJ McCarthy? Really?) he had a massive turnaround and played MVP-caliber football for two months. We saw him deliver all kinds of incredible, off-platform throws into tight windows that were quite reflective of his two predecessors in Green Bay. The sky is the limit for Love moving forward.

  • New young faces: We already discussed the pass catchers and linemen on offense. But how about guys like Karl Brooks, Carrington Valentine, Devonte Wyatt, Corey Ballentine, and Lukas Van Ness all making their presence felt throughout the year on defense? There’s a lot of reason to love the potential of some of these young defenders.

  • Aaron Jones: Jones had a frustrating year due to injury, but when he was available, he was incredibly effective to the point where it’s hard to imagine the Packers wanting to move on from him this offseason, especially considering AJ Dillon’s contract is up. In addition, Jones only continues to grow more and more likable, and he’s nearly ascended into the Donald Driver tier of universal likability at this point.

  • Attending two games: This was my first time ever attending two Packer games in the same season. The first one was against the Buccaneers, and despite the outcome, I had an absolute blast as always. The bowl seats we had were great, and I got to witness Love’s insane touchdown pass to Jayden Reed right in front of me. Then I got to see the home game against Chicago in week 18 from a luxury suite, the Champion’s Club. What an incredible experience that I will likely never have again, and what a great game to be present for.

  • Little drama: The vibes around this team were SO much more enjoyable this year. How great it was to be able to focus on what was happening on the football field and to not have any star players casting dark shadows over the entire rest of the team. It was an incredibly refreshing season, and even in the more frustrating moments, it was really a great change of pace compared to the past couple seasons.

  • Beating the Cowboys in the playoffs…again: I mean, come on. Gotta include it, right? Any time you can end Jerry Jones’s season, it’s been a great year.

Can’t wait for more fun, memories, and growth in 2024 and hopefully a legit shot at a championship. Go Pack Go!

Around the NFC North

As always, it’s time to go around the NFC North.

  • The CHICAGO BEARS are hiring former Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron to take their offensive coordinator role. With Pete Carroll retiring, things are in flux over in Seattle, and Waldron likely did not have any guarantee he’d be retained in the same role. The Bears are bringing in a coach who helped turn Geno Smith from someone universally considered a flop for a decade into suddenly being an above average, serviceable NFL quarterback who managed to get the team into the playoffs in 2022. That being said, apparently Matt Eberflus was very pro-Justin Fields in OC interviews, so that could give some insight into the team’s plans at quarterback this coming season.

  • The DETROIT LIONS had been on a magical run, and that takes them into the NFC Championship this weekend for the first time in 33 years and just the second time ever. It’s hard to say enough good things about the job Dan Campbell has done with this team and transforming them to fit his image. But they can go ahead and lose now.

  • The MINNESOTA VIKINGS have never won a Super Bowl.

THIS or THAT in Mr. Backes’s room: Week 21 Update

As I’ve done the last several weeks, I’m going to give a quick update as to the latest THIS or THAT polls in my classroom.

Without further ado:

  • Cake defeated pie
  • FIrst semester defeated second semester
  • Being smart defeated being funny
  • Ravens defeated Chiefs

If you have additional THIS or THAT prompts you’d like to poll my high schoolers with, give your ideas in the comments! I’ve pulled a few from the comments so far.

Predictions for the conference championships

Going to be a great Sunday of football! Let’s start with the AFC.

The AFC championship has gone from being the Tom Brady invitational to now being the Patrick Mahomes invitational. It’s going to be a hell of an atmosphere in Baltimore, which hasn’t hosted one of these games in four decades. But the Chiefs, despite lacking the talent that they’ve had in the past, are still well-coached, well-seasoned, and prepared for this action.

The Ravens are the significantly more talented team, and are also extremely well coached. They had some scary moments in the first half of the game against Houston, but came out and looked like champions in the second half. While I think the Chiefs will keep it interesting, ultimately this just feels like it’s Baltimore’s time.

Ravens 30, Chiefs 23

And in the NFC…

I know there are some people pulling for the Lions (I don’t really care who wins), but I just don’t really see it happening for them. The 49ers are far more talented, are playing at home, and just had a big wakeup call against the Packers. At the moment the weather is shaping up to be beautiful, so the Lions won’t have the good fortune of getting Brock Purdy in the rain.

It’s been a storybook season for the Lions, but it ends this weekend.

49ers 33, Lions 17

LAST WEEK: 3-1

SEASON TO DATE: 171-110

Incredible potential and excitement surrounds this team. The Green Bay Packers MUST make a huge splash with their defensive coordinator hire. Its a pivotal moment that can take their momentum and speed this train down the tracks toward another Lombardi trophy. If the hire is another "safe" re-tread, they risk losing the fans and locker rooms enthusiasm. Greatness belongs to the bold. Be great MLF. Do not settle on this hire

Might anyone be able to tell me what is happening with Brendon Cox, jr. these days? Ascending, descending or just plain not in the Packers plans moving forward? Shocked he didn't get elevated for the 49-ers game? With Enagbare's very unfortunate injury Gary, Smith & Van Ness were forced to play the entire game with a 3-linebacker rotation...and...those guys simply ran out of gas. Cox, jr. would have allowed for a 4-man rotation. My understanding is that Cox (played for Florida State) was a 5-star high school recruit...almost the equivalent of a 1st round draft choice but, had immature personal issues in college. Is he just not cutting it or what? To date, he has not been offered a Futures contract as many other players have. Anyone have any insight as to what is going on here???

I thought that was odd too. So much for "next man up." They brought another edge rusher up from the practice squad before the game, but they didn't play him either. Rotation is so important at that position. I was very surprised they went with just three.

The edge rusher they brought up has special teams experience and that’s pretty much what he was used for. This Packers team doesn’t like to play depth until forced. They avoid it and have done consistently on both sides of the ball. I don’t read anything much into that decision as a result.

He was on the 53 with a 3 year deal that goes through 2025. Just not active on game day. His draft projection was more around the late 3rd to 4th round talent. I assumed he would have been active but I understand the Pack wanting to give JJ's snaps to the more established guys.

Last few years the Packers have had those one or two guys who are on the 53 all year but don't seem make it to game day. If they didn't like him, they could've cut him at any time and tried to put him on the practice squad. So they must have some plan for him.

He's part of their future plans. I wouldn't look to deeply into his not being called up for the 49ers game. Thats a tough spot for a guy to get his first real game snaps. With Enagbare likely out for all of 2024, expect Cox's role to increase dramatically.

I was hoping to see him sometime this year but we just had too many new guys to bring along ahead of him. From what I hear about his talent , I'm dreaming he could be a Warner type down the road.

Sigh...

Happy or sad? I'm not sure! Happy because we're thinking potential championship again (already!), but sad because we're back to having unreasonable expectations. Oh well.

Pie over cake every time!

Corey Ballentine is 27, so "young" is a bit of a stretch. I'm definitely pumped about the rest of our 25-and-unders!

What is crazy too is looking at some other peoples ages.

Kenny Clark and Elgton Jenkins are both 28. The crazy thing though is Clark has 8 years of experience compared to Jenkins with 5.
Jaire Alexander, Nixon, Savage, Slaton are all 26.

"Good coaches are going to want to come along for the ride on which the Packers are about to embark. It could be a special few seasons or more that are coming our way."

YES...Good coaches should want to come along for the ride BUT good coaches should want to come to Green Bay because it's Packers...Green Bay is ALL about Football and winning championships. That's what the Packers do. But now it's time for Matt LaFleur to get these coaches in place. LaFleur showed me a lot this season. I went from wanting him gone to being pretty happy he's here. MLF has his warts, ALL coaches do. But the dude is getting better and like it or not, he did a hell of a job this year.

Bright spots in the season...

I'll say it started against Pittsburgh. Sure week one against the Bears and the comeback against the Saints were great, but the magic started around week 10 in a loss. That's when MLF let Love loose. All those 3 yard passes without a cloud of dust weren't doing it. LaFleur told Love to "Let it Rip" and THAT'S when the turnaround started. Instead of 22 WR screens called each game we saw 2. Everything started to go downfield and the MIDDLE of the field was finally being used (yes I'm looking at you Rodgers). Matter of fact the WHOLE field was being used. How refreshing.

There was so many more "Enjoyable" moments but what was so awesome other than this Packers squad was there was NO DRAMA. Rodgers took his act to NY, continued his gametime on Tuesdays on MacAfee, and now has even fucked that up.

I can't wait to see who LaFleur hires as the next DC. As long as it's not Staley I THINK I'll be okay. He just HAS to get this right and he needs to do it SOON. Before the best are all hired away.

LETS GO!

Nick - I'm confident that replacing Joe Barry has been considered by the Packers since the Panthers game. They probably had at least a short list of candidates prepared at that time if they did not have one already.

I expect/hope that they announce the new Packers DC by February 1st if not sooner. Let's just hope that it's the right guy. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

Me too Since '61. I'm really starting to link Martindale. I think that would be a solid hire and one that could take the Packers to new heights.

LaFleur just needs to hire a guy who says "I got this Matt". You do the offense, I'll do the defense, and we'll meet at the SB!

Martindale is 65. He would not be a long term hire and I think a younger guy would be a better fit with this young team. I do like Martindale's aggressive philosophy though.

Those troublesome statistics...

Wink Martindale plusses:
+ like Rob Ryan
+ 65 years old, won't be a candidate to bolt to a head coaching gig elsewhere
+ admired in many circles
+ has name recognition amongst people casting about for someone to replace Joe Barry

Wink Martindale minuses:
- 65 years old, no immediate camaraderie or connection with Matt LaFleur - probably doesn't play Madden
- 65 years old, no immediate relationship to young players
- unsuccessful run with Giants - poor results
- affiliated with Rob Ryan - spawn of Buddy Ryan, architect of 85 bears defense.

Hire the veteran, proven Martindale as DC and then hire seemingly everyone's favorite...Leonhard...as a position coach to groom him to take over as DC in a couple years.

Since'61 -

i completely agree that they have been considering replacing Barry a while ago. I think since the Tampa game for sure. When LaFleur said he was going to insert himself into the defense more. That was the game when he was asked repeatedly about Joe Barry's job status. He could have simply said we have faith in Barry and he is the guy or whatever. He didn't. He said something about if they felt it was the best for the team they'd make the move. (however he said it at the time)

I do believe that this has been planned for a while.

Other than a new Defensive Coordinator, the most important additions to this team are going to be a talented RB to spell and eventually replace Aaron Jones, and a talented Safety.
If we add those two things (yes, I know we have many other spots to bolster) I think we're going to be very competitive in 2024.

We need to be ready to keep our inertia in case a key cog goes down: A better backup QB, an Enagbare replacement, a Campbell replacement (unless he miraculously recovers his abilities of two years ago), an additional run-stopping DT, a replacement for Nijman (assuming he leaves and Tenuta/Jones etc. aren't good enough), a good backup center, etc.

Nijman is as good as gone. Too bad...I like Yosh's hard work from UDFA to become a solid OL. Something happened during Camp and he was downgraded by the coaches. His play on the field seemed to reflect he was playing out his K and moving on.

As far as Tenuta (IR) and the Mountain Man Caleb Jones, too early to give up on these young prospects.

I thought Nijman would be the guy at LT and early in camp I voiced the thought that Walker was a dark horse to compete at RT. So I don't know all that much, but projects like Nijman and Jones and Telfort all have a shelf life. Nijman's cost effectiveness has run out, and I think he (and Runyan) will be starting somewhere in 2024, but the Packers gotta be honest with themselves on whether Jones continues to be worth the roster spot. Churn, churn, churn.

We need to get back to the old idea of building a pipeline. There are only so many plug and play with quality types as rookies. It’s essential to be developing players with upside. To do that requires a strong roster. After this off season we may be at a point when we don’t have multiple holes to fill.

I hated to see SF make that last drive. And Barry let them drive down the field. How many times did that happen in the last three years. This years team could play toe to toe with anyone. Another bad memory to carry.

Enough. What to do with players?

Offense. Time to let Bak go. Also Runyan, Dillon and Te, can't think of his name. Goes to show how important he was. I sure would like to keep Aaron Jones. Maybe he will do a team friendly deal

Draft a OL high and RB too. Then multiple for RB and Ol so Gute can find gems in later rounds.

Defense. Dump Campbell. He digressed this year. I liked McDuffie as he played down hill better. Keep Alexander. Perhaps Savage can be reclaimed by the new DC. And keep Owens for the veteran minimum. If Enegbare hadn't blown his knee, I would say let Smith go. So we will need to draft OLB high again. Then a ILB and multiple DB's. Keep Ballentine for depth.

And now DC. Vrabel, Leonard or some up and Comer that is more aggressive. No old retreads. I am through with bend and don't break or coaches that play soft at end of games. To win Super Bowl, you have to take chances late in games. Be aggressive. We know how soft defenses give bad, long lasting memories.

Do you think Campbell might have been playing hurt most of the season? He was best at and was promised to be mike when he first got here, then that went out the window with the arrival of Quay.

Just like Savage and it seemed Stokes, I think it's about how they used their players not so much the player regressing.

I felt that that was part of the reason there were so many lingering issues in health and availability on D this season.

Let's let the new guy decide how these pieces are best used. That will be his first and most important test.

Yes. Before any players are allowed to walk in FA or be cut, the new DC needs to evaluate their resumes and video performances.

I agree. Savage's play eroded under Barry who looked like future all pro before Joe. Coincidence?

Stokes' best year was his rookie season...when he played press CB. Playing zone saw him struggle. It is rare when a DB plays both zone and press equally well.

And Quay is loaded with talent but using him passively, off ball in zone attempting to cover speedy WRs is misuse. Watch how Warner plays ILB for the Niners...Walker can play that role.

I believe the talent on the D will be very appealing to DC candidates.

The more talented team doesn’t always win.
Especially when you look at the play-offs.
And thats what you must remember about Change.

The packers had something to prove this year.
And Love carried this team like 12 and 4 before him.
But the Lions are still in the way.
On paper their just as talented
and they don’t have to make changes.
"WE are, like every team."
And it’s already started with Barry.

Fortification doesn’t matter.
And the optimism has been there since 2010.
Change at DC won’t work, unless you change
the continued failure, of our 3-4-4.
A new DC won’t master the play-offs.
(The TRUE failure of the Rodgers era.)
Unless the Pack changes to a four front.
It’s just a new spin on a old problem.

Don't know that I've ever seen you that pessimistic. What's Up?
Personally, I don't give a shit if they play a 6-1/Monster defense as long as they play it well and it stops the other team,
I also believe that a coach can make all the difference, Campbell is the guy that put the Lions "in our way".

*Good discussion pts*
-- The Lions are good but we beat them and can again.
-- We are different than most teams because of our youth which usually breeds hunger.
--We played variations of both during the season especially since most of our OLBs are on the lg side and we could even more with Brooks, Wooden, and Wyatt as DEs.

Choose the best safety, or CB in rd one, then snag the LT and DT in rd two. Fortification. I would get in the hunt for Antoine Winfield ,Jr. Maybe they try for Budda Baker in a deal, a year too late. I do not want to see Savage anywhere near this squad next spring. I still like Quinyon Mitchell as the shut-down guy opposite Jaire. They bettter get an Edge guy with speed to the QB.

Savage - The new DC may feel other wise.
He may end up closer to the LOS.
I say safety over cb. Save $$$
But the friction between the packers and Alexander
may change that. The next moves are Gutes.
Would you believe S, CB,CB.

They have nobody behind Jaire. Need a bonafide #2 guy. Valentine a nickel/dime guy. Stokes was a draft day mistake. Now he's beaten up. I would prefer a veteran back there and shutdown corners. He should have kept Hollins as a backup over a guy that was never activated. The Gutey Show....?

A pleasant season that exceeded all my expectations. Not because they made it to the playoffs and even won a game (I predicted here that they could make the playoffs in a weak NFC this season). I thought it would be good because of our running game, the O-line and the #1 picks on D to help carry the team.

I wished the youngsters would show improvement over the season and they showed improvement every game and even in games.

Now we're in the offseason and it's time to improve this team. It has to start on both lines of scrimmage. Both sides showed improvement through the season, but it has to start out of the gate next season and still get better as it goes along, and also, we know how much importance depth is.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict the new DC will be an improvement.

Improve special teams. Wonder if we'll be able to retain the ST coordinator R.B.? Haven't heard of him doing any interviews.

The coaching on O needs to improve drastically. MLF needs the help. Can't go all the way into the playoffs trying to decide the best combination on the line. If they have certain play packages for the different groups, that will be a tell for opposing DCs. I haven't noticed it this season as in the past, but I'm probably not as smart as those guys. HA!

Good morning.
Great article, Tim, but there ain't no cake on this planet that could compete with my Key Lime pie! Man, I gained three pounds just thinkin' about it and typing this!
I think the off-season needs to focus on the defense. First, hire a coach that will get it done, someone aggressive and unafraid to throw the kitchen sink at other teams. I think I'd prefer a young up-n-comer with something to prove over a retread. But someone who commands respect and can instill the same to the field of play, a tough guy, a hard-ass!. No more passive softie bullshit.
Find a way to keep Aaron Jones, I think the youngsters look up to him, and he certainly appears to have graciously accepted the role as their leader when he showed up in CA last summer. He closed out the season in an All-Pro manner, and if he's not already as likeable as Donald Driver he sure as hell ain't far behind. He is our present day "Mr. Packer'. What's not to like?
For now, I'm anxious to see the list of potential DC's, and the draft is only3 months away. Damn, this is exciting!

DC Job -

This has to be one of if not the most attractive jobs in the league. They have a good front office. They have a good HC with a QB who is already wildly considered a top 10 QB and he is just getting started. They have offensive weapons that put fear in other teams.

They are not only oozing with young offensive talent. They have a lot of young defensive talent as well. They have the experienced vets in Clark, Smith, Campbell, Alexander. Smith and Campbell could be gone but we will see. But to go with those guys they have a lot of young guys who are emerging. Last years draft Walker and Wyatt have been really good. Enagbare until he got hurt was a good rotational pass rusher. This years draft was a homerun. LVN is just starting to tap into his potential. Wooden showed potential. Brooks was an absolute steal. Valentine another steal. Johnson looks like he could be a contributor at the least. They also have some year 3 guys that have been good as well. Slaton and McDuffie.

Another reason why this has to be attractive is that they have 5 picks in the first 100. They have the ability to add some really good talent.

The defense has the makings to be very good with a good DC.

I already said who I want to be the next DC and why. But regardless whoever is the new DC we need to give them time as it takes time for the players to fully understand what they are doing.

RC,
It would be hard for me to imagine that LaFeur didn't have at least a short list of candidates before he made his announcement.
I don't have the knowledge of Leonhard that you do, but I've read he comes from the Rex Ryan tree.
Never cared much for the Ryan family of blow-hards, but they surely knew defense!

I definitely believe that LaFleur had a short list of guys already. Who is on that list I have no idea.

Leonhard played for a number of different teams.
He played 3 years for the Bills. His rookie year he played for Jerry Gray. In 2006/07 he played for Perry Fewell.
He played in Baltimore in 2008. His DC was Rex Ryan.
He played for the Jets from 2009-2011. During that time his HC was Rex Ryan. His defensive coordinator was Mike Pettine.
He played for the Broncos in 2012 where his DC was Jack Del Rio.
He returned to Buffalo in 2013 and his coordinator there was Mike Pettine again.
His last season was with the Browns where he played for Jim O'neil.

Leonhard has a history of playing with Rex Ryan and his tree.
But he isn't just a copy and paste of Ryan and Pettine. He has his own twist on defenses.

Prior to taking over as DC at UW he was DB coach for 1 season. Which was under Dave Aranda.

His defenses have been very good. One of the best in college football every year he was the DC. He is a young energetic coach who is really good. He would be a great hire.

I found it interesting. I have no clue who this guy is, but he had a video of reasons why he wanted Jim Leonhard to go to USC to be their DC.

So this is a good listen if you want to know a little bit about why Jim Leonhard is well thought of. It isn't just because he is a Badger guy. A lot of what this guy has said is very spot on and reasons why Packers fans should be happy to have him as the next DC.

Tim: In your 10thn paragraph you said "Barry should never have been retired and was retained once too many times". Did you mean "hired" instead of "retired"?

Our local paper reported that although Barry is out as DC, there are conversations taking place that would retain Barry somewhere in the Packers organization. Apparently Lafleur is trying to take care of his friend. As long as it is not as a defensive coach, I am fine with that move.

Three years of DC salary wasn't enough? Gee I wish my employer would hire all my friends at over-inflated salaries so they can do crappy jobs.

I've had difficult conversations with people who work for me I considered "friends" and I even fired two because they weren't getting the job done. Never did I say to my boss, can we keep them because I feel bad about firing them!

The NFL is a business. Joe will land on his feet, just like every other time he was hired because of his connections and if he can't find a job in the NFL, some Division III university may need a DC. He has High School coach written all over him. His family won't starve.

Rarely does an organization attempt to retain an employee terminated for underperformance. Like you, I had a long corporate career and had to terminate my share of employees including some friends and never elected to retain any of them in the organization.

That said, I really don't care if the Packers retain Barry as long as it is NOT as a coach. Let him be a scout or a statistician or something away from the field and the team.

Whomever we get for our DC, I hope he advocates for DBs and LBs who can actually tackle. I want solid man to man coverage guys who can blitz the QB, if called upon. I also feel a DT is needed. Someone like a Jerzahn Newton, who can be called upon to spell Kenny Clark, once in a while. Another Edge guy would also be good. Enagbare's injury will need time to heal and we cannot count on him being able to play next season.

The downside people will cite on Mike is that he will leave to be a head coach the following year most likely.

The downside people have cited about Al Harris is that while he has the ability to develop a strong culture and teach fundamentals, he doesn't have the experience of building a scheme and calling the plays.

Why not pair them up. Mike - the DC position is yours, we both know this is a rest stop for your next head coach gig. Al - you're not ready to be a DC, but come coach our secondary for a year while learning from Mike and you're our DC in '25.

I don't know crap about football though, so maybe a dumb idea.

It’s not clear that Vrabel would be interested in a DC role. It’s also rumored that he and LaFleur aren’t close at all. He reputedly wanted LaFleur fired. Who knows, but if a guy like Vrabel comes and does well he’s gone, he will be a HC. We need a guy for 3 to 4 year’s minimum to turn this around, develop coaches beneath him (not pinch them away too) and support this offense.

I'm not sure how long it will take me to get over this...

Green Bay went into this year with one goal - evaluate whether Love can be the QB of the future. And to do that evaluation, they chose 7-10 pass catchers that were rookies or second year guys. No vets.

The odds of that plan working had to be what? 20%? 30%? 1%?

This thing should have blown up in their face. The rookie receivers should have played like rookies and the TEs should have been developmental projects, as most rookie TEs tend to be.

And they just hit on all of them. Which is a massive victory in it's own right, but is equally as massive in having provided GB with the opportunity to see what Jordan Love can be.

We should be sitting here right now arguing about whether the offense stunk because of Love not playing well... or was it the young inexperienced receivers... or is it MLF's play calling... and of course the reasonable interpretation should have been that it was a mix of all three.

The fact that you come out of this year talking about a Super Bowl window starting next year is just off the charts unbelievable. We are so lucky to be Green Bay Packer fans.

After catching covid, I just have to make remarks about the 49er game. Isn't Jordan Love the QB of the future? It certainly didn't look like that in the first quarter of the 40whiner game. For the first series leading to a FG, it was Jones left, Jones right, Jones up the middle. Where was Love? He could very well have been sitting on the bench and that lead to the beginning of the end. By the time the Packers reached the end zone, Love was a rust bucket...lacking continuity. And it showed for the rest of the game. Never, ever, leave your QB on a boat without a paddle. La Fleur did that. Love's involvement in the game must start with the first series in the game. This is jump in and swim...not test the water with your big toe. Because of La Fleur's cautious conservative play calling, Packers got roasted.

As far as Love not coming out slinging the ball all over the field to open the game...you do realize it was raining pretty steadily, right?

Don't disagree with anything Tim wrote but I have to put an addendum on the Taylor Swift appearance. That was good, but Packer fans had Simone Biles in house all season. I'm a bit of an Olympics nerd so to me royalty was in the house whenever Simone appeared. She likely is the world's greatest female gymnast. In her arena, her accomplishments are equal to Taylor Swift's in hers. She also became a fan of Green Bay and the Packers even though cold weather is not her thing.

I don't know if her husband Jonathan Owens will return as he is a free agent so it was nice to have Simone cheering for the Packers this year.

One of the best memories for the year for me, was just seeing the rookies play so much ball. With Rodgers under center, it seemed every year there were such high expectations and they rarely relied on a rookie to play much, unless forced into that role by injury (Bulaga starting the Super Bowl as a rookie, Bakhtiari starting LT as a rookie).

But this year, it was clear from the start they were needing to play the rookie TEs and WRs, but the impact on defense by the rookies was great to see. Brooks and Van Ness each had 4 sacks. Kenny Clark had zero sacks as a rookie and Rashan Gary had 2. So they relied on rookies and second year players on both sides of the ball.

One question. I don't see GB having 3 picks in the top 50. I see them having #25, #41 and #58

Confession: I don't get too excited about the Bears rivalry. I mean, they haven't won much in 30 years so it's not much of a challenge.

That said, this year was a lot better. Bears fans had their hopes up.

It was oh so sad to hear them suffer after the opener given their off-season of delusional build up. And it was oh so sad to see them after the loss at the end of the season, when they knew nothing had changed since Don Majkowski....

Superb article.. That's an excellent favorite moments list. There were so many but that outlines and illustrates the enormous progress made since last year and over the course of this season.

With the coaching changes and the DC opportunity created there, even despite the dysfunctional silo structure, the primary product Football, on the field has totally pivoted in short order.

Haven't seen that in decades since Reggie and Holmgren I suppose, and I was having my doubts about when it would, but I think we are at a similar moment. New DC, the draft ahead. GPG
