Cory's Corner: Great Summer Vibes

What's not to like about how this offseason has shaped up?

I’ve seen the photos of the impromptu workouts.

I’ve seen the quotes of how the players would run through brick walls for each other.

I’ve seen the smiles during OTAs from the coaching staff and the players.

I’ve got to tell you that I love every second of it. This offseason has been unlike any other in recent memory. Granted, the Aaron Rodgers trade talk never went away as it crescendoed in April.

After the trade was completed, there could have been plenty of finger pointing and not trusting leadership.

But ironically, the opposite has happened. This team has really galvanized and became stronger. We all know how inexperienced the wide receivers are with the veteran wideouts consisting of Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Jeff Cotton — all three have played in one season of professional football.

Just getting reps for these guys has been imperative for their confidence. And you can say that working out in shorts and a tank top in California in mid July doesn’t equate to anything in November. And maybe that’s true, but there’s something to be said about bonds and relationships that are formed that will go a long way to calling audibles and earning trust with guys that perhaps never thought they had a chance to be considered to be a target on a big third down late in the game.

The obvious response is, “Pump the brakes bud. There are a lot of things that need to fall right for this team.” And I totally agree with that. Can Jordan Love respond from adversity during the game and from game to game? Can defensive coordinator Joe Barry be willing to go for broke and win a game with his defense as opposed to not losing it?

I absolutely love this because building team camaraderie is a great first step for a team that doesn’t really know who it is. Have them play, have them laugh, have them just hang out and be young players figuring things out.

The learning curve with this crew is definitely steep. But after all of this stuff, I really like the thought of 10 wins even more.

This isn’t a locker room of individuals, it’s a team in the truest sense of the word. After this offseason, they are going to be there for each other — which is exactly what coach Matt LaFleur wants.

I think 10 wins is doable for 2023, and that something special may be brewing on this team for it to be a contender for the Super Bowl in the future.
However, it could all fall apart before it ever really comes together.
It's not knowing that is the drama of life, and in a sense the fun of it all.
My best prediction is toward my first sentence of a bright future for the Packers.
I'm excited to find out over time, but beginning in just a couple of weeks.

Honestly, I do not get all the doubts.

I have seen enough flashes from Love to have confidence in him as a player and enough from his interactions with his teammates to trust his command and leadership. I have no doubt here.

This team has loads of talent at all positions, even safety, I do not see any reason why this team cannot succeed. I have no doubts that this team, as composed, can compete in todays NFL.

My biggest area of doubt is in the coaching staff. I see promise, I see some successes in the past, but I also see some areas for concern especially with Barry's defensive scheme and with MLF's ability to actually be a forceful leader. I have doubts about Steno as an OC, I have doubts about Butkus as an OL guru, There is a brand new DB coach.

OTOH I love Rich Bisacchia, I believe in Tom Clements, I like Ben Sirmans and I have faith in Jerry Montgomery and Greg Williams as professionals, I like Olivadotti and Rebrovich.

I hope the coaching staff comes together and provides the talented players with the guidance they need to succeed. My doubts are all contained in the coaching staff.

It’s safe to say that anyone who has worked on a team that supports each other, has good relationships, and pushes each other day-after-day enjoy their jobs and want to succeed. Whether it’s sports, at work or wherever. All these indicators for the Packers appear to be aligning. A good sign for sure!!

The National media clearly has a narrative going that the Packers are not a good team. It blows my mind how they keep telling everybody that the Lions, Vikings and even da Bears have more talent and upside! Unbelievable. If I take off my Packer fan cap and just look at this division without bias I clearly see the Packers as the most talented team, both in terms of established talent at key positions (RB, OL, CB, Edge) and exciting potential (WR, TE, QB). I truly think that the Bears will still suck, the Lions peaked last year and will regress and the Vikings got worse this off season. The Pack actually bottomed out last year. This is the Packers division to lose and it ain't close. Further, if the young guns on offense play to their potential this could be something special brewing.

'If I take off my Packer fan cap and just look at this division without bias I clearly see the Packers as the most talented team"

You are not wrong ,but it's doubtful that we are the best coached team. That is what concerns me most. We have all the parts and the talent level to succeed but the leadership ,poor game planning and most of all, lack of timely in game and game to game adjustments still scares me. It's rarely mentioned and that is more concerning.

But I'm an optimist so let's see what this year brings!

Players playing to their individual potential vs coaching developing that and then evaluating talent to put the best players on the field are different aspects; it'll be interesting to see all that fit together ...

And just a few months ago, we were heading back to the 80s, with an incompetent front office, in "cap hell".

The Packers are a solid organization and they're putting another solid team on the field, because that's what they do.

It’s way early, as you said, Cory, but the 2023 Packers following all the minicamps do seem galvanized as a team.

That might be one of the most important factors moving forward. Good call. The excitement & positivity is palpable, and we haven’t seen that in years.

There’s going to be many new surprises as they begin battling for positions soon, but I like what I see. Ten Wins seems entirely possible against the 3rd weakest schedule according to Vegas oddsmakers. They’ve projected GB to be facing only 5 winning teams in 2023.

Team speed in all 3 phases of the game will be good to see from the youngest roster in the NFL. Hoping this coaching staff makes the most of it. Both lines having been bolstered these past 2 off-seasons should help all of our skill players on O & D get better results. Jordan Love finally getting his shot with that canon… and all the new players, huge.

I would expect no less at this time, especially before TC actually opens. I, however, need more than the 'rally round the flagpole' to convince me that this team can win 7, much less 10 games. Anything is possible, but the difference between hope and reality is often far, and I need to see more to make the unbridled hope, also known as fantasy, to make it reality.

The learning curve is steep, as Cory mentions, and I believe the 'Complexity of Illusion' will cause a few crashes among the young group, if not with its inventor too. It's not like he's seen or sees things clearly. Perhaps it was the fog of Rodgers, perhaps it wasn't. Whatever the name of the fog, it still hovers over MLF.

I hold my flag and wave it like all others, but the paraders still need to be selected from rehearsals, and that keeps my flag waving in check because talk is still talk until it becomes performance time.

I know, I know, my 'blind optimism' umbrella just won't open so easily.

I would agree with your take.

I like the optimism that I have read from all the posters and it could come true.

However, although we do have some mature parts of our team such as the OL and CB room, we have a lot of young players in very important positions such as QB, WR and TE. Can the coaching staff bring them along quick enough to be a winning team this year? Is the coaching staff talented enough to bring them along quickly?

We shall see. My hope is that we at least see some positive growth this year, have the coaching staff earn our respect and belief that the current staff is the one we need in place to be champions again and most of all that we see if J Love is the QB that we want him to be.

The players are excited, the coaches are excited, and the fans are excited. And I am an avid fan who lives in California and I'm not going to miss that home opener against the Saints which is 2,014 miles from my home for anything. It will be Jordan Love's debut as our starting quarterback and I've got the tickets; I bought the airline tickets; I made the motel reservations at the Hilton Appleton Paper Valley Motel where the Saints will be staying and I hope I can make enough noise so they don't sleep well; and I have a rental car reserved so I can once again drive around and visit the sites in my favorite state. I can hardly wait!

Cool, Ferrari-Driver! If you have some time that weekend in Milwaukee, pop on into my studio. Would be great to meet you! First Floor of The Marshall Building, across street from Shake Shack. The only art gallery playing Black Sabbath, or Tool, maybe some Bosa Nova... complete with a disco ball...and a giant Jimi Hendrix painting that you can't miss! LOL.

I was born near you in Waukesha and went to school at Madison so I spent time in Milwaukee. There is a famous old pool hall in the basement of the "Antlers Hotel" where I played in a pool tournament many years ago, so I still know the area. I think the Marshall building is also quite renown and is at least 150 years old. I know we are planning to drive up into Door County and if I happen to make over to Madison so see a couple of old school chums, I will try to head over old I-94 which is only about an hour away and stop in.

And this team is just too fluted. To predict 10 wins.

In 2022:
Jones was 10th in rushing yards with 1121
Jones was 10th in receiving yards for a RB with 395.
Jones was 9th in combined rushing/receiving yards with 1516.

Explain how is he no longer a top 10 running back.

Oh yeah....Jones also had the 2nd highest yards per attempt at 5.3 among running backs in 2022. So he ranked 10th/10th/9th/2nd, all while splitting time with Dillon, but he's not a top 10 NFL running back. Lol

The smartest thing MLF has done is split Aaron Jones’ snaps with AJ Dillon to keep him healthy and extend his career. I bet Aaron Jones doesn’t care if ESPN ranks him in the top 10 as long as he can continue to play for years. Smart use of this talented, productive player. 60 TD’s!!!

Green Bay returns the best defense in the division. They have the only coach in the division who has ever won a playoff game. Dillon/Jones is half the offense and they're pretty good. Everybody in the starting lineup was here last year.

I saw this nugget, dated today:

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/jordan-lov...

"Love is working out in California with a group of Packers teammates that includes running back Aaron Jones, wide receiver Christian Watson, wide receiver Jayden Reed, wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks, wide receiver Jeff Cotton and backup quarterback Danny Etling, "

We scored 7 in our opener last year. I think we'll do a lot better this year.

I remember when Rodgers was confronted about the Brees and his WR's getting together in the off-season, even if during the CBA issue in 2011, and everyone here, and I mean everyone cheered him when he dissed it, and followed it up by not doing it ever, and all said fine, until last year, when everything Rodgers was deemed bad by the 'Bad Man' who before did nothing wrong.

Why are they playing catch in Cali, and not in GB where they, uh, play. Don't want the fans to see how little it actually means and little they do? Can't edit what your fans see live.

I remember Rodgers pooh poohing the offseason workouts. I guess he showed them all by never going to the Super Bowl again. I hate to agree with the haters, but I can't think of a single thing that Rodgers ever said or did that would make me think it's about the team, and not about him.

I don't believe Rodgers was always about him, as you do, but I believe the FO induced much of what Rodgers became by the thin gs they did and didn't do.

I agree with you that he was not showing that mentality " always about him" until that SB win. From that moment he step by step showing his personality until that explode in the Packers face.

Do not forget that the scout reports before draft pointed out as one of his main flows FPQB cockiness - nicer term for arrogance and narcissism. It was already expressed at his college years.

Many players from many teams, but not from our team. That's the difference.

You know, I coached HS football. We had a day when everybody reported, and we got their names, etc., and we ran around the field a few times. What was amazing to me, always, is that when I was there the day before, getting things set up, there were always some kids there already, wanting to get started, and they'd help me set up the blocking sleds and the cones and the dummies, and then we'd go into the equipment room and get stuff set up. I never asked them to do it, they didn't get paid, but this is what they wanted to do. They had .....enthusiasm..

I didn't get the impression Rodgers was very enthusiastic about the Packers during his "off time".

MLF's first game in the NFL was a game , on the road, against the Bears, who had won the division the previous season. We won, 10-3, no doubt because of the incredible performance of Rodgers. He led us to 13 first downs! He converted 2-12 third downs!! He led us on a 4 play, 71 yard TD drive (47 yard bomb to MVS)

This baloney about Gutekunst being carried by Rodgers is Category 1 crazy. There's no foundation.

"I didn't get the impression Rodgers was very enthusiastic about the Packers during his "off time"."

You know I, and I'm sure millions of people on their vacation/off time don't show enthusiasm about, their job, until a couple of days before having to return. I worked at a place that while on vacation they sent a notice that all employees needed to attend a meeting on a Sunday morning, and I was on vacation. I wasn't away on vacation, but I didn't go. Furthermore, I was asked why I didn't show up, since I wasn't away. I said, do you think I would have if I was away, of course not, and that's the respect you should have regarded me even not being away. Rodgers showed up for Mandatory camps, I have no issue with not showing up for VOLUNTARY camps. If you want them there, make them all mandatory, but don't expect them to allow the team to dictate your off-time. It's called OFF-TIME for a reason. Would you return for a meeting in the middle of your vacation/off time? A yes answer is bs, so don't offer it.

Don't compare HS kids helping you out with professional players, if you do, why don't you expect them to play for free, like high schoolers.

You missed the point.

I'm not one of the millions of people who have no enthusiasm about their career. Some people like to do extra. You obviously don't. That's fine. But I'd prefer it if my starting QB was a guy who was willing to go extra to help the team succeed.

Why can't I compare HS kids to the pros. These pros aren't getting paid for this. They're doing it for free, and they're doing it because they love what they do and they want to do it as well as they possibly can.

If a meeting were scheduled during my summer vacation, I tried to attend if I could. Although I coached, my real job was as chairman of the Special Ed. department, and frequently there were ARDs and other things that required my attention, and I did them. Sometimes that wasn't possible, but this concept of anybody "dictating" to me is crazy corn, because anybody who has ever known me for 5 minutes knows that nobody is dictating anything to me.

I use my time for important things. Hanging out at the pool and drinking beer is one of my favorite summer pasttimes, but I'll use my time to take care of important things rather than just say "No thanks, see you in two months".

I don't think enthusiasm is something you can turn on and off like a light switch. And when you're a professional....you are never off the clock. Is an off duty cop off duty, or will he still use his weapon to protect you? Is your obstetrician off duty at 4:00 a.m.? And I don't think you win the "ultimate prize" when your team leader isn't enthusiastic about it.

Spouting B.S. about going to the meeting? What?? I went to the meetings. I could have chosen not to, like you did, but I made the other choice because it helped other people. I know that's not something that's really on your list of priorities.

SA-WEEEEEET!!!!

Thanks for that nugget, LH! Great to hear Love has these guys on it. Man, I do think they are going to both light it up, and shock the world this season.

It's a coming together of an overwhelming number of young, fast, powerful, dynamic talents added to a team with some great veteran players/team leaders that makes this special. A. pretty solid, experienced OL, key veterans at all 3 levels of our D in Clark, Smith, Campbell, Alexander & Savage... that can go a long way towards overall improvement with that much new talent coming on board. 25 newly drafted players alone in last two years. Add in FAs and UDFAs, and roughly 2/3 or more of this old Packers team has been made over with fresh, motivated & skilled young players.

The skill players alone? That dynamic, and that intent on doing something special this season that they are meeting up for the 2nd time this offseason to work out together???

WOW. A very far cry from anything we've known in the last decade. Great news!

What kind of turds pop down votes on that? Can't call yourselves good Packer fans hearing that news and hitting a thumbs down.

A good way to look at the Packers going into the year is to ignore the quarterback position and judge each position group on how it stacks up against the opposition.

Offensive line-two players who have received post-season honors and experience all across the line.
Tight end- for now not the strongest but could be very strong by the end of the season.
Wide receiver-two starters with some experience and speed to burn all around.
Running back-maybe the strongest position on the team and possibly in the division.

So the offensive line and running backs are better than the rest of the division. Maybe there's a theme there.

Defense-

An All-Pro anchoring the defensive line with some experience elsewhere and a potential stud in Van Ness. When Gary returns, a strength. I put the outside linebackers as linemen as they are going forward more than in pass coverage.

Inside linebacker-One Pro Bowler who has a chip on his shoulder and a second-year player with athleticism galore. A former team weakness is now a strength. They are on par with the rest of the division.

Cornerback-lots of studs and I don't see a dud. Another starter with post-season honors.

Safety-a question mark but if Savage plays up to his ability this won't be a weakness. Savage does need to tackle better They have 2-3 players that can take over for Amos.

Special teams-

The new coach has made a world of difference. The new placekicker is a deep question mark but Crosby is available in a pinch. The punter is a vet with a good leg and is a competent holder.

Nixon has become a post-season honors guy and there's plenty of speed on special teams.

So tell me, if you look at this team OVERALL, there's a lot to be positive about.

The national sports media dopes focus on the quarterback spot, but the rest of the TEAM has lots of talent. We'll see if MLF and Barry can bring the best out of them.

**** Offense - Packers OL ranked #2 overall in DVOA by Football Outsiders in 2022, behind LVR #1 and ahead of Super Bowl winning KC at #3.

Tight End has two of the most dynamic talents to play there since Jermichael Finley. Both players clocked faster than Finley. There is so much to like here that many of us won't realize until we're in it, seeing them perform in live action. Musgrave having come from NFL Football bloodlines appears to show in his nuanced style of play. Kraft was ranked by Athlon's as the #18 overall player in their Top 100 Players Draft Preview, published prior to the Combine. We might be in for a real treat here.

Wide Receiver now contains the fastest set of WRs ever to step foot on the Lambeau Field turf wearing the Green & Gold. I was excited last year for the rookies, and I'm equally as excited about this year's rookie WRs. Reed? Wicks? Add Melton in there? That alone is some crazy goodness. DuBose was nursing an undisclosed injury throughout the minicamps, but he showed some quality - unique talents as well.

If you haven't yet, watch Wicks' highlights from 2021, and check out his release from the LOS. Highly reminiscent of Davante Adams. He's got unique gifts there, without a doubt. Reed is just a fast little marauder. Melton will show more polish than many might expect.

**** Defensively, there's promise. Great promise from my own perspective. The simple math of adding so many players this offseason with RUN STOP strengths is encouraging for a Packers team that was 8th worst in the NFL on 1st down (surrendering 4.71 ypc), 2nd worst in the NFL on 2nd Down (5.67 ypc), and 6th worst in the NFL on 3rd down giving up 5.43 ypc.

I'm hopeful Tarvarius Moore finds Green Bay a great place to finish out his career in a positive way. The FA Safety Gutekunst signed last December came into this NFL known as an assassin vs. the run, with ++ ball skills. I hope Moore is able to realize his dreams playing Safety for the Packers.

That's just one of many stories about to unfold on D with regards to new players added. Some were added last season and we have yet to see them in action, like NT Jonathan Ford. 6-5 333. He and TJ Slaton are childhood friends, both of our NTs, playing together on the same D. Ford came into this NFL with all the physical traits you could ask for at NT, but none of the technique work necessary to become a solid Pro player. The Packers staff spent all of 2022 training him up.

Could go on and on, but, there appears to be much offering encouragement for 2023 on D regarding the players recently added.

****STs? Loaded for bear. Bisaccia got every player he wanted added to this team for him to work with.

This 2023 season should be fun to watch.

GG, I think it starts with offense. Good offensive teams go to the playoffs, and bad ones, don't, and that's irrespective of their defense or special teams, for the most part.

And offense starts with the line, not the QB, and it looks like we could have a good one. Maybe a real good one. Going all the way back to my earliest memories of playing football during elementary school recess, Play #1 is always "Give the ball to a really good runner and block for him". And that's 50% of the Packer offense....give the ball to a really good RB...via pass or handoff or pitch or shovel pass or whatever. All the stuff with formations and motion is just to try to camouflage what we're doing so we can get better blocking angles. That's half our offense, regardless who the QB is.

We were a very, very, very average offense last year. In measure after measure after measure, there we are, somewhere between #12 and #20 or so. So what did the incompetent clowns do about that? Well, they replaced their 39 year old QB, who had just had the worst season of his career, with a guy they've been preparing for 3 years. They added a WR. They added a receiving TE. They extended Jenkins, and Nijman, they kept Bakhtiari.

When the season ended in such a disappointing manner, and then all the drama about Rodgers, it was easy to not see the concrete steps the Packers were taking to fix our #1 problem last year....an offense that simply wasn't getting it done.

No doubt, there are people who wish we'd kept the old guy and traded away Love for some superduper WR or defensive dominator. That's a really crappy plan, IMO. Fix the line, get a better QB under center, add some help at the skill positions and we're going to be right back in contention for the division title.

I totally agree, Leatherhead. Great stuff. Gotta be able to score points at will. Gotta be able to manage games effectively with your offense.

It's remarkable what a great offense can do for even a "good" defense. Now, adding a "great," defense to a "great" offense is where the magic happens. It's possible we see the makings of some of this coming together this season. The makings of which has been assembled going back 4 years or more (Elgton Jenkins having been drafted in 2019).

The national media thinks we are crap. The team and fans are excited and hopeful. We are nobody’s underdog.
Win or lose, this team will fight.

This article - excellent Cory!

I will add to that how David Bakhtiari, who many want to trade (because he does not carry the G!?) said at minicamp how he had questions about how team will looks like now when he is the oldest guy on the roster by a lot, but when he spent those few days with team he was pleasently surprised with excitment and positive athmosfere in and around everyone, so he still consider Green Bay his "home". His only unknown thing is what will FO (THEY!) do, as his contract still may be problem regarding SC and he say that some kind of restructure may be in plans or he can also see possible trade if THEY (FO!) decide to go on that road.

For me that is the best sign how good is team athmosfere and that is the first important step in building team as unit and everything else can be trained.

I agree with Johnblood27 that the only question are OC (acting HC) and DC. And if they show average capabilities, I can see success for the team, if not this season than next for sure.

The expectations for this team are out of control, fueled by homer fan site writers. Ten wins? Come on people, get real. This is a 6 win team at best. This is essentially the same team that won 8 last season except that MVP, HOF, Diva has been replaced by Mr. 89 NFL passes.

LOL....Our new QB1 has been working the off-season with RB's and WR's...Can we just acknowledge that's a step in the right direction, at least? He moved the offense against the #1 NFL Defense in relief. It may not be everything, but it's something positive, and he looked good doing it. It's not so much that he's a HOF QB in the making, but he is surrounded by a lot of good players on the OL and RB group and a youthful, WR unit with great potential...Would I feel better if DA or another proven top 3 #1 WR were on the team....Yes. I'm pretty excited to see new blood all over the skill position, cause on film, I see a unit that has the potential to rival the one our previous QB1 had breaking into the NFL in a year or 2. I like all the WR unit and both new TE's. I'm also looking forward to Deguara being used more often and the RB's being thrown to. I have hope our run game is better and used more also. RELAX...egbertsouse. Our defense should take a step and our kick returner was an All Pro with over 1k yards in half a season which should mean good overall field position all season. Like it or not...things are actually looking better...not worse, at least in most peoples minds. Our NFL schedule is relatively soft, with a lot of winnable games, especially early.

See Egbert above. Some remnants linger here , but who cares. This year will be refreshing. Such as not always waiting for 0 on the snap clock.

I'll take Mr 89 NFL passes thanks.

Also amazing how other teams are allowed to get excited about first round picks straight out of college but we're supposed to be chill about a first round pick who has had three years to learn behind a HOF QB

I like the positivity..and looks like the players are all keyed up....Love is spreading the ball around in CA. Gotta like that. I feel the offensive Juggernaut comes in 2024 as our WR's and TE group get a year to grow together...Really a breath of fresh air feel to it in 2023. Former QB1 was very talented, but it will be interesting how ML/JL offense pairs together to counter pure talent vs. working within the system hitting the designed open receivers and not snapping it from the Shotgun formation on run plays. Whatever it is...it will be different this season. My Father in law passed away recently...and we always watched the Pack together....That's the only bummer from where I sit. Time waits for no one....It's JL time.....God Bless Packer Brothers and Sisters...GPG

My condolences to you and your family Phantom.
I lost my oldest brother nearly 20 years ago. Watching Packer games (among many other things) changed for me after that.
I still shout some of his expressions at poor execution or officiating.
Time waits for no one indeed.

Building a high performing team involves building relationships and the foundation of it all: trust.

One thing we know for certain is that the 2023 season will present new challenges and plenty of adversity. But as long as this team trusts each other and takes ownership of their mistakes, that will be very telling about how they respond to adversity. I have confidence that Love and his teammates are going to turn a lot of heads this season while many pundits are picking the Lions to win the division. GO PACK GO!!

I love this, Rossonero!
You’re speaking on intangibles, as are many this off-season with regards to team building. Seemed previously there were Aaron’s guys, and then the rest - for more than a decade. This 2023 team is looking to be more cohesive. It’s early, but I really like what I see.

That would still be one more W than AR12 had in his first season as a starter.
