Aaron Jones is Back with the Packers!

Aaron Jones is returning as a member of the Green Bay Packers

What seemed like the impossible has happened. The Packers have managed to keep Aaron Jones in the fold.

For weeks, I've been railing against the "you don't pay running backs" theory. I don't care. For me, it's the big play ability (runs of 77, 75, 77, 46, 59, and 60 yds this year ) and what's it's meant for the Packers' offense when he rips one off. I wanted him back and let Russ Ball figure out how to do it.

Let's Gooooooooooooooooooo!

I know with the tight cap situation and the worry that RBs rarely live up to big second contracts one sentence in an article I just read sums up the reason for keeping him around.

"Jones, 26, is one of only two players in NFL history to post 3,000-plus yards rushing (3,364) and 35-plus rushing touchdowns (37), with an average of 5-plus yards per carry (5.2) in their first four seasons. Jim Brown is the other."

That's some elite company I must say and he was just a 5th round pick. Throw in his recieving numbers, you can see why they wanted to keep him around.

Another reason to be optimistic that he can continue to be great is the fact that he had much less of a workload than many RBs who received big second contracts.

I hear his deal is more like a $9.5 million avg. with incentives that can push it to $12 million a year. With a smallish $13 million dollar signing bonus, the structure of the contract seems to give the packers a relatively cheap out after 2 seasons, should he not live up to the deal he signed.

Now let's see Gutey go and sign either Kenny Golladay or Will Fuller or possibly a nice defensive addition, or both. Let's goooo, all in 2021-22.

Good news, and I admit that I was wrong. I didn't think he would sign with Packers after they did not tag him, and looking forward to this week with more restructures and free agency. Then the draft, and getting ready for a good year.

Jones has elevated even higher in my estimation - as he’s acknowledged that he’s a glove fit for MLF’s scheme and that he may have got more money elsewhere, he also runs the risk of being played incorrectly to his strengths... and detrimentally to his career, potential future earnings and accolades... or worse, health.

Smart move Aaron Jones, smart move.

Adam Shefter reports 4 years, $48M, with a $13M signing bonus. The minimum base for him is $990K and the signing bonus proration would be $3.25M, or a total of $4.24M. They probably used a workout bonus and a game active bonus.

I'd guess his 2021 cap number will be about $5.25M, but no numbers are out yet. I will update the Packer Tracker when the cap numbers are known. It probably puts GB over the cap by $6.52M, unless the team waits to forward the contract to the NFL.

Green Bay fans get to see Thunder and Lightening. I, for one, can't wait!

Jones + Dillon will be a great tandem.

I would love to see Williams get resigned as well, but I know that's a pipe dream. He's going to most likely get a shot at as a featured back somewhere in the league.

Jamal Williams just gave a pretty classy good bye to Green Bay on social media. I hope he gets a nice payday on the open market,. He deserves it. The guy was an under-rated gem last year, IMO.

Not to mention the nice payday would stand to benefit the Packers in comp picks

No numbers yet for Turner.

I've been keeping an eye on that, which is why your article on Aaron Jones beat the unpublished article I put in the queue.

I have to laugh: my article calculated Jones' minimum cap number, likely W/O and GA bonus, to reach a guess as to his cap number. LTBE incentives could push it higher. Blah, blah. Jersey Al's article has the tweet with some numbers and then is all about Jones on the field. LOL.

I think this is another example that Green Bay spends in non-decisive positions ..... I love the player, but it's not worth all that money .....
Once again we bet everything and only on offense.
I remain pessimistic about the CB ILB update help to Clark ...

I've been pretty much of the same mind as you that it would be better to not re-sign Aaron Jones, Fabio, but now that it's done, I'm excited about having him back.
It's a risk, and I'm still not sure about it, but I would guess this sends a surge of excitement among the players and to the fans that Green Bay is gearing up for the Super Bowl next season in an even bigger way than expected -- in a huge way.
All things being about equal, I like signing our own guys over outside players, and keeping the continuity of the team with familiar faces as much as possible -- another good thing for both players and fans.
Also, Jones is still fairly young for a running back, and seems to have the self-discipline to keep himself in great shape going forward. The price seems fair at its base, and contracts with incentives seem to be win-win. We'll see about the guaranteed money.
As noted by Jersey Al -- Jones does have that ability for the big play that is hard to replace, and he does it with both handoffs and receptions.
The pairing of Jones with A. J. Dillon appears to be an exciting and formidable combination, and the sharing of the chores could keep Jones at or near his best for the next few years.
At this point, I have a good measure of trust in Gute overall as GM, including his ability to make the salary numbers work for the good of the whole team.
Everything is a risk. On further review personally, perhaps somewhat irrationally, this seems a good one.
Actually, I'm pumped!

Hi Swisch
I am also very happy for Jones' return also because he has shown that he cares a lot for the Packers team and at Green Bay and this, besides being very nice, is not for everyone.
So I will be happy to see him in green and gold again and I will definitely be his first fan.
But I think that all seasons are different from the others
This in particular finds us forced to act with money problems and very high expectations
So (for the good of the team) I would have preferred that the money had been invested for one of those needs that I believe are now known to all.
But my faith in the Green Bay Packers remains timeless.

I think the salient point here that you acknowledged Swisch is Jones’ legitimate dual threat capabilities - and not just as a check down option (where other backs ‘receiving’ talents peak).

He’s a risk that had to be taken. SB or bust I guess!

Another upside, there’s one less draft day position that needs to be met. This opens the draft board up more for GB.

Perhaps it opens the draft board up more for the Packers to take two or three of our picks to trade up into the top ten in the draft -- especially if we think there's a star to be had at cornerback, defensive lineman, offensive lineman, or inside linebacker.
I'd want a guy who could start, or at least contribute significantly, as a rookie.
It seems we could make that move up for quality and still have enough picks left for plenty of quantity.

I’d prefer more depth and development talent to refill pipelines than the cost of moving up 20 places—which would be exorbitant. We have needs at CB (multiple), OL, DL, ILB and we need to restock potential at WR, CB and I’d like to see someone to challenge in the return game/option role as well as perhaps an ST pick. We still need a 3rd RB candidate too to compete with holdovers.

I can see us moving around in the draft but I think we need to acquire potential and depth behind main needs and I see that objective as important.

Too pricey given Jaire and Adams seem more critical to resign before becoming 2022 UFAs. If AR is not extended before next year...does that mean 2021 is his end with GB now due to cap issues?

AJ is great - no doubt - but could be replaced at lesser cost with a different RB (RBs less risky to replace) and allowing GB to extend more critical players at more challenging positions to fill.

Worth repeating,
Glad to have him, but at over 11 mil...ouch that's too much for an RB below D Cook's talent!
Happy to have AJ back instead of drafting one in the 3rd or 4th on May 1st and hoping it works out.  Now lock up Tonyan and this offensive unit looks solid.  Patrick or Hanson as Center, Runyan and Jenkins as Guards and Turner, Bak (Jenkins) and a new OT.   Adds at WR, DT, NT CB S OLB ILB in May. Come on AR 12, a little help please?

Why the negs? Happy that AJ33 is here. But this is a team sport, why not spread the wealth? At 13 mil guaranteed its a deal for GBP and FO! Yes AJ is below Cook; just 1 or 2 spots below! SMH (even I can pay BT85 out of my pocket).

Look - Amos, the Smiths, Bak, Turner, and even Funchess are willing to help get another peek at a Championship...just saying where's AR12 and the rest?

If so, since Henry gets $12.5M, Jones at $12M or so is fine. But I have Henry above Jones, and by a considerable amount, something like $3M per year. Thinking $9.5M is reasonable for Jones and $12M is a lot.

If the base salary for Aaron Jones is about $9.5 million per year, that seems a fair price for both him and the team.
I'm guessing if Jones gets up to about $12 because of incentives, it means he played well enough for us to consider that added amount well-earned and well-spent.
A good way to look at it may be what one thinks Jones is worth f he plays about the same as last season -- factoring in not only his carries from scrimmage, but that he is at least somewhat comparable to a good slot receiver who is reliable in catching short passes for first downs, plus a dangerous threat to occasionally take a short pass for a long distance.
I don't know, though. Glad for other thoughts.
P.S. I'm glad we didn't spend what would seem to be similar money on Will Fuller.

I’d agree as a pure traditional RB. Jones isn’t that (Dillon is more of a candidate) but he is a very valuable weapon in this O. Wasn’t looking for this, but I see the potential and thus the rationale.

It’s difficult to judge this until numbers for Jones and others give us the big picture, but doing so premised on Jones being a prototypical bell cow misses the point. Were he that, I’d think this was a poor decision. Jones is being retained because he is a game changer not a back to carry the brunt of the offense. The Tennessee game illustrated the difference. Dillon is your Henry comparative and pretender. Jones is an X factor player that defenses can’t ignore.

We don't know what numbers he was offered w/ his previous agent. The only numbers we know of were w/ Rosenhuas as his agent and were an average of 9M per and a low amount in guaranteed money. His guaranteed money is still relatively low, but the avv yearly is signficantly higher. A likely trade off. Apparently Jones wanted badly to stay in GB and the Packers badly wanted him back.

Wow. Ok. Russ Ball has managed to keep as few holes as possible in the roster by this signing and like it or not, with PSmith signing. So now the draft can focus on the remaining holes: CB, ILB and DT. Then WR or OT as opportunity presents.

I see both sides of this, and the 'don't-pay-running-backs' argument. But I'm pleased with this signing. Draft and Develop lives on in Green Bay. Now FIND A WAY TO KEEP the BEST CENTER in the NFL, so you keep the OLine continuity!!

For all the folks who think that the GBP window of opportunity is nigh coming to a close with Aaron Rodgers, then this is a good signing. It took 3 years for Aaron Jones to break out. Without him, there would be a drop off in 2021 and well, just one more year of maybe not having the roster to get to the final game.

Its more than just plug and play some new running back and trying to replace 2020 production. How many years had GB been trying to get a top threat RB? Even more, it is about maintaining a dangerous trifecta of AR, AJ and DAdams, so the potent threat of Jones really helps Davante, and vice versa. The offense without Jones would most likely be watered down. So GBP can go into the season with a very high degree of confidence and familiarity, and that gives the play caller a lot of advantage in developing the schemes further. AJ was a great team-first guy, so I'm glad that the team did him right.

I am extremely happy for Jones. Cerdo deserves to monetize everything he has done so far and he deserves it. They also say he's a great person and great for the locker room.
But despite all this I believe that the Packers invest money in a very dangerous role which almost no other team does considering the age of the player.
Great respect for Jones, but I think the real needs of the team are different ..... and this does not mean that I have a low IQ.

Dumb. Does the Gute have any plan at all? First, we draft a edge player at No. 12 to sit him on the bench for an overpaid underachiever and then we restructure the underachiever to make sure our high draft pick continues to ride the pine. Next, we draft a QB in the first and put him street clothes behind our MVP QB for about 4 years. (Look for a big extension for AR in the near future to coumpound the mistake.). Finally, we draft a power runner and a blocking H- back to transition to a power run game but then bust the bank for an undersized, often injured RB for the next 4 years. What’s it going to be Gute. The power running Ravens or Mike McMuffin’s pass happy Cowboys?

Happy Jones will be back, but the cost is much to steep for my blood (and it seems a few others). It will be great having Dillon and Jones together to make the Packers run game a bigger threat. Judging by the numbers it has to be assumed that the 1st and likely 2nd yr contract numbers will be greatly reduced. That makes it fairly likely Jones could become a cap casualty in yrs 3 and 4, even w/ the new TV contract. The window of Rodgers, Adams Jones and Dillon is open for 2 yrs, then it'll largely depend on if Rodgers makes to year 3. The Packers probably have an out in years 2 or 3.

Great news! I thought it was too much to pay a RB over $11 million and wrote that we should move on, but now that he's back in the fold I'm ecstatic. Great back, great teammate, should make Rodgers happy, not a huge cap hit this year so we can likely still sign another FA, either DL or CB. Great offense remains intact. All good.

Rodgers and Z. Smith will be restructured, Davante gets a new deal, lowering this year's cap hit even more so this likely doesn't negate one or two additional strategic additions.

I do think it might end the Will Fuller speculation though. I don't believe they'll sign a FA WR. The strategy I would think more likely is to draft a WR in the 1st or 2nd (depending on who they sign in FA) and another WR later in the draft. Have to have some depth since EQ and MVS are on their last year. The addition of Funchess probably reinforces that.

But then I've wrong on practically everything so far; thought they'd drop P. Smith, let A. Jones go, and call me for a tryout at kick returner. None of those things happened, so expect Fuller to be a Packer.

If it ends the Fuller fantasy it’s a hidden bonus. Now we need a credible solution at CB. The only way this is a bad idea in the short term is if we fail to have resources to resolve the CB 2 issue this year.

I think some folks need to take a deep breath about the contract until it is fully analyzed. At the end of the day, either the offers were not as big as Jones was expecting (which, given that he hired Rosenhaus, I'm kind of thinking is true), or else he gave the Packers a pretty big discount. seeing as who his agent is and just reading various websites on who had their eyes on him, why can't it just be that he gave a hometown discount and enjoys playing here?? Gotta be suspicious of everything?? Don't matter, he's staying..

NFL teams are not allowed to negotiate with upcoming Unrestricted Free Agents until 48 hours before the start of free agency, which is March 17th.

In other words, your speculation is moot. This isn't about Jones not getting better offers, this is about Jones wanting to stay a Packer and finding middle ground with the organization to achieve that.

I doubt the discount was vast if at all, but remember that the difference in the last year seems to have been guarantees.

I don’t honestly care about the history. I see the reason for the interest on both sides. I personally wasn’t calling for this based on resources, but judging the move without full details of Jones’ contract or of other contract moves seems impossible as we don’t have either detail or wider context.

Don't care if he had offers from every team or just the Packers, the question is it good for the Pack? Gute must think it is and that he can still plug other holes. A one-two punch of Jones and Dillon is solid, and if Jones is hurt you have a great replacement. The Packers with Rodgers are an offensive-minded team. A vital position on offense is now solidified.

NEWS FLASH:

Per Matt Lombardo, his NFL sources indicate that "I’m told the #Packers’ deal with Aaron Jones is actually closer to $9.5M APY with incentives that can push it to $12M."

I am not at all sure Jones gave GB the hometown discount at $12M AAV. Depends on how easy the incentives are to reach.

Leotis: there were reports that the Packers offered $9M AAV and others that indicated they offered "top 5 RB money" (which would be $12M) when Jones was with his first agent. We have to wait to see what the numbers really are for Jones. Was the first agent overvaluing Jones? the next agent is Rosenhaus. Wait for the numbers.

Glad Aaron Jones is back in Green Bay!! He has proven his worth many times over and earned the respect of his teammates, the coaches, and the rest of the NFL. The Packers are better off with him than without him. Looking forward to watching him be a dominant force in this explosive offense of the Packers.

Not sure how many times you're going to repeat the same speculative comment in different words, but I'll be happy to keep replying the same way- NFL teams aren't allowed to negotiate with pending UFA's until the 48 hours before the official start of free agency, which is March 17th in 2021.

So, per NFL rules.. No outside teams were making offers to Aaron Jones at this point. They aren't able to talk business with pending unrestricted free agents until 4pm Eastern time Monday the 15th.

The combine has long been rumored to be when tampering starts. Lots of agents there and lots of GM and scouts. The rules make it risky, and there is no way for me to know the extent, if any, or specificity of any comments made by a GB scout to a media member (or directly to a sports agent) at bar around midnight. What's that you say, Rosenhaus is buying top shelf? Nah, he is buying stuff they keep in the back.

I guess I am just a cynical person.

Also to clarify.. Rosenhaus saying they were anticipating bigger offers from the market but Jones wanted to stay in Green Bay isn't an indictment of Jones' potential worth on the open market, but rather, Rosenhaus indicating it was Jones who wanted the deal done at this price point, not necessarily him (Drew).

Also.. read all my other responses, which make your speculation null and void.

I doubt Rosenhaus is too worried, his reputation is pretty established. I think he’s done this before with the Packers with no tag if memory serves. Overall, who cares about that fluff? The question is did the team get value?

I have no doubts that Drew is reminding his other clients he's all about the big payday.

But there's zero reason to sign with the Packers before FA starts for Drew Rosenhaus. FA invites competitive bidding for services. Drew works on a percentage of the take. He wanted Jones to go into FA.

The most likely scenario is that Jones did tell Drew, "Get the deal in GB done."

Side circumstantial evidence: That diamond crusted "G" Jones has been showing off after every TD. The man wanted to stay in GB. I'm sure Drew would have liked to get more money from the Packers, and he definitely wanted to get a bidding war in FA.. Probably the only scenario where I'd take DR's word at face value, him telling the media that AJ wanted to stay in GB.

I must admit that I didnt think that Jones would be back. Most of that was because of the types of people that Drew R represented and his particular attitude. But maybe that was just TO and others. Now whether or not we overpaid will always be a discussion. People complain when guys take the money and leave and GM's dont try and resign. But that is the cap - and when a team is successful players get valued higher. People complain when a team doesnt try to resign their own. Remember when TT let Rivera and Wahl walk- 4 was upset - but those guys only had 3 good years in them together. I have been critical that Hayward, Tretter and Micah Hyde walk . I am not one of those prognosticators like those TV and radio guys who says it is win at all costs time for AR - I think that is is win every year with AR - and Drew Brees and Tom Brady - because they have it. Now it is time to build the D and even though I though that Preston should have been cut - the fact is that he played better near the end of the season and perhaps with the new DC he might fit a better scheme and his new salary might motivate him. We still need to fix the Dline /middle linebacker and D back situation - but a lot of guys are getting released - like Hayward ( does he have a year left in him?) So at least Jones gives us some stablility and doesnt push Dillon too hard too fast.

Well, time for debbie downer.

I am excited and can't wait to see Jones and Dillon. That said, $12M is too rich for my blood. I'd be much happier if Matt Lombardo is correct and it is $9.5M APY with incentives and escalators (Incentives are much better for the player) that could push it to $14M APY. $14M APY is probably high since Shefter got his information from the agent, Rosenhausm and agents often include the incentives in their AAV info. Have to wait.

Yes, I think signing a CB2 would have been a better use of cap space. But I am not a draftnik and thus I am not sure how good some of the CB prospects will likely be. If Barmore falls and GB takes him in the first [or if the OT is just too good to ignore - maybe Darrisaw or Cosmi] is there a CB in the 2nd (and I mean at least one who falls to 50 - we draft 60th after all) who can start day one? IDK.

We have lots of picks this year including some not premium but nice picks with one third, two 4ths, and 2 fifths. CBs don't normally come in the 4th and 5th rounds, not day one starters.

Waiting for the actual numbers to judge this deal. It should be fun to watch them, but I am not a teenager. Yeah, getting closer to the grumpy old man yelling get off my lawn.

I am in agreement in the CB issue. To me that is the position where investment in experience promises the most upside this year.

Great to have him back, as it keeps us from having to fill a giant void in the offense. But is one ball going to be enough for all these weapons?

Aside from a high quality prospect at T and maybe a hidden gem at WR, using the other eight picks on defense seems to make sense. I know--somehow a monkey wrench will get thrown into this.

Great signing! As stated above, let's wait to see the actual numbers Aaron signed for. In my mind, if we had to replace AJ, it would have to come from the draft. It would take years to develop a RB even if we hit on a good one in the draft. The team's stable of RB's are not ready for prime time yet, without AJ & Jamaal Williams. If you do the free agent route, you are still paying for a RB ( of lesser quality) for at least 4 to 6 million per year. All day long I will take a proven player who loves the system, is a loyal want to be Packer, & an Aaron Rodgers want. Keep Aaron Rodgers happy, add a veteran CB in free agency, draft wisely. Do not give away draft picks, keep them all. Down the road we are going to need cheap contracts for the next 4 years to off set the money we are kicking the can down the road now. The Cap number in the future will go up, so that should also help the restructuring of current contracts. Go Pack Go!

Wow. Wow . Wow. So pleased. So grateful. So excited to have Aaron Jones signed. Took me by surprise but it shows that he is an important straw stirring the drink. The Packers are just a different team with i on the field. It will be fun to watch the Jones-Dillon-Deguera-Dafney backfield. Aaron Jones and AJ Dillion are like Bourbon and an ice cube or cherry pie with ice cream. The two just go so well together. What a splash sign by Gutey. So wonderful to not let one of our great players walk.

I want the Packers to win a Super Bowl this Season. A. Jones signing has a greater chance of making that happen than any FA RB or rookie drafted. Most good rookie RB's can start year one but ML offense w/ it's blocking schemes is harder to get them to learn and executed their responsibilities on a given play. Dillon came along very, very slow last year. Jones is an elite weapon running or receiving. I really liked Williams also, never put the ball on the ground, very reliable and pretty good smooth receiving skills. Our team is better positioned for the postseason already. Now go get a talented CB in FA and above average DL next to Clark. I think we can work around OT until Bak is back and address it in the draft at some point. I know everyone wants a shiny ILB in the draft but we have a couple fellas showing something as rookies. The new DC worked w/ LB's a lot, I think they will grow in it and would be ahead of most rookies in year #2. Need a really good WR or CB round 1-2. GPG

My opinion on this off season dealings is that Arod is the key behind some of these deals.

It would not surprise me if they have some deal worked out with him and it would have Big Bob T included in some fashion. Linsley maybe but his next deal will be huge and not affordable.

Props to all for being Packers.

I understand resigning him and I get what Jones means to this offense and this is an all-in move kicking the can down the line.....So I don't mean to pee in everyone's oatmeal but I have to say I think these funds could have been better utilized elsewhere. Adding depth to the IDL or grabbing a moderately priced pass catcher.

Signing RBs to large deals almost never works. Most of those large contracts are regrettable except maybe Kamara. Oh well it's done. Feed him and Dillon. Actually commit to running the ball.

Very mixed emotions. Yes, Jones is a great player and teammate. I worry about his durability. He is a very good RB but he isnt a top 5 back in my opinion.

I'd prefer spending money on linemen on both sides of the line. Over and over in FA and draft. Throw in an ILB and a slot WR.

Ah, what the hell. Let's look on the bright side. At least we're not New Orleans, who managed to "lock up" Taysom Hill on a four year 140 million dollar contract, thereby making it impossible for teams who would never want Taysom Hill to sign him. That said, as always, I will be the main fan of both AJ and P. Smith

i think there would have been close to fan revolt if we let Jones walk. i felt, more than Rodgers, he was the real soul of theteam, loved by one and all. remember the story from his first year of anonymously helping some elderly lady with her bags in the outagamie country airport? i mean the guy is just plain good to the core, on every dimension. the sad thing is the equally charming and very able Williams will be elsewhere and there is someone whom you also just want the best for, deserving every dollar he will make. best 1-2 combo of running backs in the league
