The Thursday Morning Packers Gameday Preview

Good Morning Packer Nation!!! Welcome to The Thursday Morning Packers Gameday Preview!  This week the Green Bay Packers will be heading back to Santa Clara to take on the San Francisco 49ers.  This matchup with the 49ers is certainly going to be one of those games where anything can happen for a number of reasons.  The Niners 53-man roster has been decimated with injuries and the Packers are battling injuries (of their own), Covid-19, and could be without each of their top three running backs.  Who will come out on top in this disjointed rematch of last year’s NFC Championship Game?  I will have the answers to that question and more in this week’s Thursday Morning Packers Gameday Preview.

In this week’s edition, I will talk about how I see this Thursday Night Showdown playing out, three burning questions that will determine the outcome of today’s game, as well as some fantasy players I think you should use, as well as my picks, parlays, and game props for this week 9 matchup.  I am happy to have you with me here today for this matchup of playoff contenders; so just sit back, relax, and enjoy this morning’s Packers Gameday preview with your morning cup of Joe.

What to Expect Against the 49ers in Week 9?

It will certainly be hard to predict how this game will play out with the rash of injuries and Covid related absences that both teams are dealing with.  One thing that I do feel fairly certain of is Kyle Shanahan putting on a coaching clinic and maximizing his offensive unit and finding a way to expose every hole on the Packers defense.  I expect another 200+ yard rushing game from the Niners and just enough from their passing attack and bag of tricks to lay another embarrassing number on the Packers defense.  The only question will be whether Aaron Rodgers and his skill players can put up enough points to keep the Packers in the game.  My guess is Aaron will figure out a way to put points on the board but it remains to be seen as to whether or not the Packers defense can avoid becoming Swiss cheese.

Three Burning Questions That Will Determine the Outcome of Tonight’s Game:

  1. Will the Packers be able to do enough to contain the 49ers rushing attack?
  2. Will Aaron Jones Play?
  3. Who on the Packers defense will step up?

Sunday Afternoon Fantasy Football Picks (Always Start the Plug and Play Guys):

  1. Any healthy 49ers running back- I expect another clinic on running through a rushing defense that has more holes in it than Swiss cheese.
  2. Big Bob Tonyan- Aaron Rodgers has developed a comfortability and trust with Robert Tonyan on safe routes in the flat as well as in the red zone.  I’m looking for 5 catches and a touchdown from Big Bob. Buy stock in Big Bob Tonyan in daily fantasy.

Picks, Parlays, and Game Props

  1. Anytime TD Scorer Parlay: Davante Adams, Big Bob Tonyan and Jerick McKinnon.
  2. Game Prop Parlay: Packers -5.5 and over 50.5 points +260
  3.  Game pick: As pessimistic as I am about this game and as much, I’d like to pick San Fran, they are just too banged up on both sides of the ball for me to pull the trigger.  Give me the Packers 28-27 in an odd game.

Packer fans, I want to hear from you!  Let me know your thoughts on this game against the 49ers.  How do you see it playing out? Did you hit on any fantasy or game/parlay picks from the last few weeks?  What are your picks for this week?

Every day were hearing of new 49ers players who are out. With several starters already injured now the 49ers are losing their 2nd and 3rd string players who are filling in for the starters. Go look at their WR's who are healthy. One is named Richie James who is questionable and the other is Trent Taylor. WHO????

The 49ers are also down to their 3rd string TE and 3rd and 4th string RB. 5 O-Linemen are out including their LT Williams who's still a very good LT and lastly the QB Jimmy G.

Now...If the Packers can't BURY the 49er Offense tonight I will lose all hope. The Packers winning 28-27 against THAT offense is no great feat and IMO should bring more anxiety to Packers fans than anything else. (No offense David).

So far the NFL is saying game on. Personally I don't give a damn how banged up the 49ers are. I care about the Packers. I want a Packers win and I'd like to see them dominate it since they basically are playing against 3rd and 4th stringers at the skill position.

IF the Packers are REALLY any good this game shouldn't be close...Not even a little. At least if you really feel this team is capable of a SB run.

Just saying, last time we played them they didn’t need a QB.

Yes, but the RB and blocking were there. Also, let's not forget that as bad as our D was last Sun, it was against the best back in the NFL.

49rs will pound their fullback into the running game and as a receiving threat.. McKinnon is still a good RB. With Deebo and Aiyuk out along with Bourne they should be in man/press all game. If Pettine stonewalls the defense in this match up just prep for the 2021 draft.

Yes, we should win this on pretty easily. And even that will prove - nothing.

So in the interest of fun, I', thinking that Packers should try to win this 50-0. That would prove - something. But even under MLF, they don't seem to show much interest in scoring once the go up 2+ scores. But if the Packers go up 21-0 at halftime, I bet the NFL calls and tells everyone to make it look better so as not to ruin the money train. So I'll have to settle on 30-14. Will that be enough fun?

You are so on point with this assessment. I would love to see us go toe to toe with these guys after last year's double drubbing. It is the only way to measure yourself against talented, well-coached rivals. We will hardly see that tonight BUT this Packers squad needs to win this convincingly because we are healthier and have fewer starters on the sidelines. Getting outcoached, run over or even winning a nail biter will raise more questions.

Any win on the road is good. The 49ers are 4-4 and banged up but they’re still a formidable opponent at home. Our own west coast history isn’t good. I’ll take 28-27 if I can get it.

Win or lose, we’re on track to win our division and have no worse than a #3 seed. If we leave California without any more casualties, that’s a win.

I’m pretty confident that the coaches and players who got waxed twice in SF last year feel they have something to prove. This would be the opportunity they’ve been waiting for.

These games aren't played on paper. Players no matter their roster depth ranking" have pride and play to win. If the packers don't come out prepared and ready to work hard they will lose. The effort and determination need to be there. Having an attitude that this should be easy and and it's all about blowing them out is fine for fans but as a player that is very dangerous. That's why coaching for this game and player leadership is crucial.

There 3rd string guys on the Packers or SF are going to give it everything they have as this is their big chance, that mentality shouldn't be underestimated.

Channeling Clark W. Griswold: Nobody is going to give a frogs fat ass how many points they win this game by in January. Only that it’s a win.

Rarely, if ever, does it matter how a Super Bowl winner played at mid season. Every team is going to win a game they shouldn’t and lose a game they shouldn’t. This isn’t the last of the adversity. The real meat of the season is coming. Let’s see if any of these upcoming games begins to harden them a bit.

I’m with Leather Head on this. Don’t care how. Just get a W.

Going to be interesting to see the Packers play with no true running back who is trusted in pass protection or the aerial game. Ervin isn’t a true RB. D Williams has had poor hands and route and catching issues. That is going to make a huge dent in how this offense has functioned as a whole. Is this a game we see Lovett asked to do more? Can we get any run game going? Will we be confident enough to try? How will we replace the RBs in our passing schemes?

Coldworld, the obvious approach would be to run more and pass less. Introduce our #2 pick to the NFL . Keep Rodgers protected because we still have 8 games remaining. Punt if you have to. Do everything you can to make the SF quarterback have to beat you.

We’ve been terrible at getting takeaways and this would be a great opportunity to change that.

My total disdain for night games leaves me extremely disappointed that the NFL is going ahead with this game regardless of the COVID situation affecting both teams.
Gotta be another NFL money grubbing move.
Disgusting!!

I suspect that shit is getting real for the NFL with COVID rising and Winter coming. Delaying games could easily lead to more complex situations. Damned if you do damned if you don't.

Besides - what animated, masked singer type garbage would FOX air in place of the game?!

There only a couple of things that I want to see from this ill-advised game:

* Can Matt LaFleur coach against the better coaches/teams in this league?
* Can our defense show some grit - particularly against the SF O-line?
* Will Aaron Rodgers lead our offense to 4 quarters of solid play?

If our season is going to rest on a Aaron Rodgers led team - then he needs to lead the charge - even against the better defenses.

Agreed...
Its up to pettine on D as far as coaching but the players on D need to step up. Either play 2 gap or 1 gap but you can't be playing different schemes on the same play. Players need to be disciplined. That's coaching - accountability whether it's Z or not

Arron makes up the largest percentage of our cap space and it shows. This teams goes as Arron goes. Be nice if it wasn't always all on him but it is. Its like that on most teams, its why QBs get paid so much.

He needs to overcome drops and poor protection, 2020 has shown IMO that he can become a bit down when things aren't going his way. Not like him. A huge part of sports like anything in life is overcoming adversity, the Packers need to show they have that intestinal fortitude (gorilla monsoon) to win the tough games be it playing better teams or getting bad breaks, Its what makes a champion - not a 3 catch a game WR or 15 snap a game IDL. Those things help but strength needs to comer from within.

I don't expect Bak, Jones, and King back ( so much for minor injuries). We should win this game without them, and get players ready for second half of season. They still have a tough D ,but Rogers will be completing passes all over the yard as long as the line holds up. Niners still have some solid RBs , but solid will not due even against our poor run D.

Looks like the Covid-19 was more a set of false-postives on the testing front for the Packers this week. Still I agree with Nagler on this one. This is a bad look for a league that tells everyone they care about player safety. It would have been better if the league followed the Packers lead in dealing with the PR aspects of Covid-19. But the NFL under Goodell, has been so clumsy in every major issue the league faces, it's a miracle that the season has gotten as far as it has under him. Football wise the Packers better be ready to play. After the indifferent performance they put up last Sunday, there is very little room for error. Frankly, if this team comes out flat, I'll be right there calling for the MLF to get the axe. 49ers are a wreck and are down to third stringers and practice squad in their starting line up. (I see the God of Injury has decided to winter this year on the left coast) That said, this is the NFL, so the Packers better be ready. No Excuses.

First off this game should have been rescheduled to Sunday or Monday night. Both teams are being placed at risk for increased COVID-19 outbreaks which could put upcoming games at risk.

Secondly, it’s difficult to see how the Packers will function without their RBs. I can’t see Ervin being used to run inside. As for Williams who knows? It’s basically Rodgers to Adams again with some passes to TEs sprinkled in.

As for the defense will they even show up this week or will they be a bunch of empty uniforms again as they were against the Vikings.

Will the Packers kill themselves with penalties again?

This game will tell us something about MLF, Pettine and the coaching staff depending on how the Packers come out to play. If they play with a sense of urgency fine, if not, we have problems.

Rodgers can be the leader but he can’t play alone. I’m hoping that Rodgers will find a way to win what is likely to be an ugly game. Pack 24 - 16. Go Pack Go!
Thanks, Since ‘61

So true Since ‘61. The D against the Vikings showed no emotion/urgency or leadership. Time for Lafleur to read them the riot act. I’m not a Brady fan, but when things aren’t going well he gets fired up on the sidelines. Rodgers or some other veterans have to step up for the rest of the year to lead this team.

SF is decimated, the Packers are not.

The performance of the GB defense will not be removed from under the microscope regardless of a win in grand fashion. They're playing a team missing so many starters etc, they could form their own milk carton business for the missing., it could be deemed criminal to call it an NFL game. Anything less than a total dominance here by GB, the SB Trophy they want to hold will become so far away from any level of reality, they shouldn't be allowed to see it in the hands of the actual winner.

Another motivation for a GB win is to keep the back-to-back losses boast by MLF off the resume a bit longer, an oft-mentioned stat here in CheeseheadTV land.

Let me repeat my opening line.

SF is decimated, the Packers are not.

Though a loss to SF under these conditions will have many screaming that GB is without more valuable players than SF, which will be hilarious since SF certainly has a much larger percentage of valuable players than GB has had in, years.

Packers not decimated? What about Jones, Lazard’s, kirksey, king, Taylor, Greene, Dillon, deguara, Williams, Redmond, Martin and others like Bak who are questionable for the game. Hardly full strength.

In player to player comparison, GB manages a win with Baht as to value. The rest of those who are 'out' and questionable for GB, there is no comparison to those who are 'out' for SF. Even if all those listed for GB are' out' SF is still far more decimated as to over all and individual match up as to value loss.

So which one is it T? On one hand, you say that picking much higher in the draft is a bunch of bull. On the other, you say the player comparisons are not equal. Can't have it both ways.

Cue “everybody hurts” by REM. If it’s mid season and you’re not a little beat up you aren’t trying hard enough. Both teams are beaten up enough that this isn’t really a matchup like last year.
