Cory's Corner: It's Time For WR Help

The message came loud and clear early Friday afternoon.

Our own Aaron Nagler tweeted that the Packers were indeed looking around for wide receiving help.

First of all, after what I saw from Allen Lazard and Davante Adams, I liked what the Packers had at receiver. Then Lazard went down with a core muscle injury and is out indefinitley and then Robert Tonyan, who just burst on to the scene this year, injured his ankle and is questionable for Sunday's game.

So let's review who Aaron Rodgers is throwing to at Houston. He's got Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who leads the team with three drops, Malik Taylor, who has one catch this season, Darrius Shepherd, who has been targeted five times and Equanimeous St. Brown, who has played in one game.

This quote from last week really stands out to me: "They've got to earn our respect, and play them honest," said Tampa's budding linebacker Devin White.

What he's saying is that defenses will bottle Adams up, but as long as there is a consistent pass rush on Rodgers, nobody else is going to get anything of note.

White may only be a second-year inside linebacker, but he's exactly right. If teams can get to Rodgers and contain Adams, there's not much that this offense can do.

Which is why it doesn't surprise me that the Packers are looking for some more help.

The question now is, who is it going to be? Even though it looks like the Vikings are in full white flag mode, there's no way the purple folks are going to help out a hated division rival.

The first name that makes sense to me is Washington wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The second-year pro only has one drop in 58 targets while getting adjusted to not one, not two but three different quarterbacks this season. The third rounder from Ohio State is having a career year, despite only seeing the end zone one time. He's a speedy receiver that has been compared to Pierre Garcon. Most importantly, he is still on his rookie deal that goes through 2022.

Another name that makes sense is the Jaguars' D.J. Chark. Like Washington, Jacksonville is dreadful and because of that, it is easy to overlook him. The 6-foot-4 wideout has zero drops this year and is clearly on the upside of his career after a Pro Bowl season last year. What also helps is that he is also on his rookie deal which goes until 2021.

Since both of these guys are having solid seasons thus far, the asking price will likely be higher than general manager Brian Gutekunst would've initially liked to spend. However, his modus operandi since he has been here is to build the best team possible. Right now that means to add receiving help. The Packers may have to sacrifice a third rounder, offensive line depth or even running back depth but it would be worth it if Green Bay could add either one of these two guys.

The Packers looked like a Super Bowl contender through the first four games. The best way to get back to that is by adding to the arsenal.

It's a nice wish list but both are talented, efficient, cheap and on rookie deals, meaning that for rebuilding teams it makes little sense to trade them as they would be a part of the rebuilding.

But for fun, let's have a go. My guess is that each would cost a first rounder. If that's the case, i make the trade. They'd be better than any receiver coming in at the end of the first. Prioritize McLaurin over Chark with his extra year on his rookie deal. Throw in a 6th. Stay away from John Ross. And what about ESB? Hopefully it was opening day jitters for him but it's unlikely he gets many more chances after seeing Rogers' body language after his first target.

They took Sternberger one pick ahead of McLaurin in 2019. He's a guy worth the one pick. Toss in Jackson /Burks in the deal. Doubt Ron Rivera would want to give up his top guy.

NOOO to any deals. You can't cry WR, when this OL had it's worst showing in years. Protect Rodgers and a WR will emerge. You want a #2. I Get that. But BG took a RB and a QB for the Future. Was there any concern to plug holes? Not really. Bg had his chance to make this team great. DEFENSE!!! Sign his own! He choose the Love of his eye. The packers concern hasn't been the Super-Bowl. Win the division, make money. Earn Respect. Rodgers deserved better. It's just a little to late now. Rodgers must lead. He must Get it done. LeFluer must play the hand that was dealt him. Together they will make up for BGs failures.

I am at a loss as to how any viewing of that game can lead one to the conclusion that the problem was the absence of a receiver.

Moreover, the comments on which this was based was that Gute was exploring options to improve. WR was referenced in a question and, rationally, the response was that he was no doubt looking in that area. The implication was clearly that he is looking for any opportunity to improve the roster but that it was not a given anything will happen.

Newsflash, that’s what GMs do. This is an example of juxtaposing an author’s fixation on a pretty bland statement to provide a skewed interpretation supporting his desired conclusion.

The chances of any trade are low. The chances of that trade bring for a wide receiver aren’t particularly great within that.

The mildly good news this week was that Lazard was seen doing stretches with the team before practice. That suggests he will be back.

I agree with those who say that if they're going to deal, they should deal for defensive help first: I think those players will get up to speed and contribute much faster than a WR will fully get into the offense and generate rapport with #12.

It was confirmed that last season BG kicked the tires on Emanuel Sanders at the trade deadline. I don't know if he was checking on other WRs at that point. Maybe you're right and it's just GMs doing what GMs are paid to do, but there wasn't much else talk of him exploring trade options.

I’m with you Coldworld. We are simply obsessed with the notion of slinging it to a bevy of WRs. It’s like we cannot envision any other way to move the ball and score points.

MVS is on track to have 50 receptions for 800 yards. Adams is an elite WR. And Lazard will most likely be back for the stretch run. We could have had Jerry Rice and it wouldn’t have made the difference against Tampa Bay. Statistically, you lose over 80% of the games where the defense scores a TD on you.......a WR isn’t going to change that math.

The odds are small that Gute makes any significant move by the trade deadline for a variety of reasons, most of them cap-related. The acquired player would have to be cheap and good in order to help, and that probably means a premium draft pick at a minimum.

I, too, favor defensive help first over acquiring a WR. I suggest DL or CB, but if what can be acquired happens to be a WR, well then I'd like to know if and when Lazard is likely to return. Not sure that this team is just one player away.

GB is best when AR spreads it around, but I do think the #3 to #5 WR have to have at least decent talent. I suspect that Adams, Lazard, Tonyan and the RBs are the minimum necessary for full functioning of this offense.

Gute will NOT ante up a premium draft choice for a WR (remember our latest draft?). Get ready for more street free agents at WR.

If Adams is so crucial to the success of the offense, why did the Packers win every game when he was injured? Because Rodgers spread the ball around, and LaFleur created innovative schemes to get receivers open, which included TE's and RB's. Was the Packers game an anomaly or a template every other team will copy? We'll begin to get the answer on Sunday. But I'm thinking it was a convergence of overconfidence, leading to lazy/sloppy preparation, and the shock of finding out that every game wasn't going to be an offensive stroll in the proverbial park, but instead a tough slog against a determined, hard nosed opponent.

The top three picks the Packers need to make in next year's draft should be OT, DT, and ILB. They need some quality big bodies on both sides of the line and they should not be giving them up for a WR this season. The Packers have a few good young WR's already. ESB simply needs more reps and game playing time. MVS has to keep developing! Funchess will be back next year as well. Jace and Tonyan will continue to improve at TE.

The Packers in my opinion already have what they need at WR, TE, and RB with young players and are ascending. Yes, I fully understand the constant drum beat for a talented to shelf WR. I personally wanted Jefferson this past draft and then the Vikings took him. When I saw the Packers had traded up I knew and started shouting for Love and was right. I still think it was the right decision at that time and spot in the draft.

While there isn't anything sexy about obtaining big quality lineman and an ILB in the draft that is what the Packers need. After that if there is a good WR with some upside go for it. Just don't trade away our top draft choices now.

MVS was ranked near the bottom of all WR's last year, right around where Allison was ranked. Bad last year and hasn't shown much this year. Yet people keep waiting for him to emerge. He's an awkward speedster who doesn't get separation and has mediocre hands. Foster and Fulgham (who is tearing it up for Phillie) were both let go and both are far better than MVS. Gute saw something when he signed them then the coaching staff said... nah. These kind of mistakes aren't as damaging as mistakes in the draft, but the problem is the Packers are making mistakes in both areas. Can we finally get rid of MVS and give reps to someone else?

Hopefully Im wrong, I often am, but I didnt see anything that jumped out on highlights or film about Jordan Love. I have seen alot of close your eyes and throw the ball deep plays and some scramble plays. But i didnt see any timing slants, crossing route throws or plays that involed a recieving RB. So Im hard pressed on why Love got the love that he did. In all fairness, Gute signed Funchess...and I think that stable of Adams, Funchess, Lazard would have been deadly...but it just didnt work out that way. DL was sorely needed in last yrs draft IMO.

Jordan Love for a first and a 4th was a good pick. This team went to the nfc championship game and this season was going to be their last shot at a super bowl and they didnt get any of the help they needed and drafted a QB for the future that may never be good enough to start 3 YEARS FROM NOW. With all of the key free agents they have and no money to sign them next year they will start out with a lot less talent than they did this year unless they have a draft that is epic.

"Top three picks ... [in 2021] should be OT, DT, and ILB."

FYI: Packers don't have a single WR signed for 2022. Not one. Still, you may have the right idea. I suppose GB could re-sign a 30-year old Adams, draft some in rounds 4-7, get UDFAs, or just buy a free agent in 2022 assuming the cap loosens up by then. Or trade for a WR.

*I think D. Adams is the type of WR who remains at least good late into his career.

Both of these trade targets are so improbable. There is no reason Washington and Jacksonville trade their top wr who are on rookie deals. Jacksonville has other wr s such as Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole that are more likely to be trade targets. As for the Washington football team Terry McLaurin is all they got. Remember they just signed Robert Foster off of our practice squad to their active roster. Slim pickings in D.C.
Seems to me teams like the Giants, Bengals, and Texans have better depth at the position and are more likely to be sellers. Golden Tate, John Ross, Will Fuller, or even Randall Cobb could help us out.

I literally laughed out loud when I read those two suggestions in the article for trade targets. Especially since he says they "make sense" and then goes on to say there's no way it will happen because the price tag is too high for it to be reasonable. You point out some trade targets at WR that DO make sense. Add guys like Jamison Crowder or Breshad Perriman from a Jets team that's already cleaning house and who have contracts with virtually no long-term commitment? Perriman's dirt cheap if you can keep him on the field. DaeSean Hamilton from Denver.

Nobody is going to give up a young quality starter at a fair price so I don't see the Pack making any big trades at any position. But that's OK, we were 4-0 with this squad and I think we are looking at a good season, though maybe not the undefeated Super Bowl winner many were thinking a week ago. Heck, we could play really well this week and still lose. Houston has a top QB and has played some of the best teams in the NFL thus far. It looks like it could be time for the AJ Dillon show.

Looking back at last year's draft the smart move may have been to trade their R1 pick into R2 and then take Chase Claypool. But we didn't so now we live with Love and that may turn out spectacular anyway.

Who we take in next year's draft will depend on where we are drafting and who is available. Usually there are about 3 logical choices when drafting late in R1, as there were this year, excluding the trade down option. Personally I don't think poisition is as important as getting the right player. R1 should never be about need. That may be true for all picks.

For now, I'm looking forward to getting Kamal Martin back, as well as Lazard and King and Bak. A win this week and we will all be feeling much better about what we have.

I have heard enough about best player available and all that B.S. Here is the real deal, if your team is close and needs a couple positions and there are a couple potential all pro players in the draft you go get them with whatever draft capital it takes. Not every player needs to be an all pro but every one should be able to do his job at an acceptable level. Your backups many times are there for a reason and JAG for the most part . I'm talking about elite level starters that will be difference makers and that is where Gute doesn't get it. We need a legit #2 WR who has later #1 potential, A dominant NT/DT. a pro bowl level Safety. I think our ILB group will sort itself out soon when healthy parts get back. That is a lot this late. Claypool was my #1 30 pick last year because I knew he wouldn't make it to the 60's for a 2. If we went out and finished out our roster with known quality not guesses we wouldn't have much to write about.

So unless there's a miraculous turnaround, which all of us are certainly hoping for, we're probably looking at a defensive overhaul at season's end.

"The Packers looked like a Super Bowl contender through the first four games."

In the eyes of the blind optimist, and then with a rude awakening punch in the face, reality came into vision once again and the signs of what will defeat this team came into focus and the optimist begins now to see the likelihood of a repeat of many seasons past.

This team isn't ugly, but it needs an ugly opponent to make it feel like it's pretty. They had those situations for four games, and then they went on a date when a team that is better looking and got dumped in deserved fashion. Two weeks to prepare and this game showed you didn't or possibly believed you didn't need to. The sign of ignorance and ego run amok.

Whatever the outcome in Houston, they best keep themselves in-check, as there are more fists looking to punch in the face, a team like the Packers.

Why are we abandoning playing defense and running the ball already? Is Mike McCarthy still around with Capers? First four games is too early to crown a team. They have to play through diversity and in to October, and November to start calling them something other than the team we love. Here is to hoping they can improve, or find a defensive coach who can play the whole game. Stopping the run, and the pass.

Scoring is up throughout the league. A lot of good defenses are getting burned. It looks to me that PI and BPI flags are stuck in the refs pockets. So a lot of DC’s are feeling the heat. Little or nothing is going to get changed this year because I believe that the league likes high scoring games.

What the hell are you smoking? Neither of those teams will sell a cheap WR on a rookie contract who is playing well. IF we get a WR (we should be Gute has been stupidly hesitant here for who knows what reason), it will be an expensive vet whose best days are behind him. Or it will be a depth type of cheap piece. This offense isn't predicated on WR play.
They have more than enough talent at the position and opportunities for guys to step up.
For all we know, all of this WR talk will or is intended to motivate the guys we have.

Lazard could return this season, so it makes no sense to throw away draft capital chasing players
we really can't afford and who haven't played in our system.

It's early and our record is great and should add a win tomorrow. We have a few guys here or there
banged up like any other team and our depth has acquitted itself nicely (people keep saying that our
first 4 opponents were bad, but consider that we won those games with our best WR, DL, ILB injured for
most of it and lost our 2nd best WR for a big chunk during that winning streak, while also having to shuffle
the OL from game to game and quite successfully).

I don't see a single position on this team that could be made better from outside at a reasonable price and
think that even a cheap option would be bettered by internal development.

Stand pat.

We only have 1 good WR who can get open and catch the ball consistently. This offense truly is not predicated to solely WR. It works because of an Elite WR usually doubled because we don't have anyone else step up in that position. It starts to make your offense 1 dimensional. a 1 and 2 WR a slot guy and a couple RB's and a couple TE's. That's what we need. We have a #1 WR, a couple RB's and 1 hobbled TE and 1 primary blocking TE. Nobody else has elevated his game to improve, that is not already hurt. Personally I would get a good NT/DT and wait on the return players unless a very good WR was available. By the way there is no such thing as a cheap option except UDFA which Gute has been sifting daily. If we used a #1, #2 or a #3 2021 draft pick on a #1 or 2 WR or pro bowl level NT/DT or Safety I am all for it. Win a Super Bowl now GUTE!!!!!

I think Chark would be a fantastic addition. But at least Mr Nagler is finally admitting that the Packers have a poor receiving corps - at least while Lazard is inactive. Every serious NFL commentator in the mainstream media has attacked Packers' management for failing to bolster the WR unit in the draft. Can you imagine if Rodgers had Claypool (a late second round pick by Pittsburgh) as one of his primary targets?

While it is true that Rodgers is talented enough to spread his passes around to a variety of WRs the way Favre did when his WR unit was thin, it is glaringly obvious that MVS and EQ are NOT elite receivers and will NOT enable the Packers to challenge the top teams this year. With a bad defense led by an inept defensive coordinator in Pettine, the Packers' only hope to win is to put 30+ points per game on the scoreboard and pray the Z, Gary, and the invisible Preston Smith can pressure the opposing team's QB and prevent the kind of unstoppable attack that defenses seem to be able to mount against Green Bay in the second half in particular when the Packers are protecting a lead.

The absence of Lazard has exposed the glaring lack of depth at WR and perhaps now Mr Nagler and similarly uncritical optimists (when it comes to defending the current WR corps and the failure to trade for an elite WR or draft one in the first or second round) will now realise that blind faith is no substitute for reality.

why is it always better to scrape a WR off waivers or another team's practice squad than it is to sign an Antonio Brown to 1.02 million (plus incentives if he rocks)?
