Redskins Sign 7th Round WR Terrence Austin

Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports the Washington Redskins have reached a four-year deal with seventh-round wide receiver Terrence Austin.

Wilson reports the deal contained a signing bonus of over $62,000.

Austin (5-11, 172) was a two-year starter at UCLA, catching109 passes for 1,192 yards and 5 touchdowns, including a team-high 53 receptions in 2008, his first season as a starter. That season also saw Austin break Maurice Jones-Drew’s school record for single-season all-purpose yardage (1,878), a mark Austin would come within 60 yards of equaling in 2009.

Austin averaged 24.1 yards per kick return the last two seasons, helping Austin earn second-team All-Pac 10 honors as a kick returner in 2008 and 2009. Austin also averaged 9.9 yards on 95 punt returns during his career, as well.

The Redskins ranked 27th last season in the special teams rankings compiled by Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News. With the Redskins releasing its primary punt returner (Antwan Randle El) and kick returner (Rock Cartwright) from a season ago, Austin’s path to a spot on the 53-man roster is clear.

Austin is the fourth of the Redskins' six picks in the 2010 NFL Draft to sign a contract. First-round offensive tackle Trent Williams (4th overall) and fourth-round (103rd overall) linebacker Perry Riley remain unsigned.
