Raiders Sign K Swayze Waters

The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent kicker Swayze Waters, the team's official transaction page reports.

Swayze signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent after the 2009 NFL Draft, but was released on August 6 when the Lions signed free agent tight end Carson Butler. Swayze signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent after the 2009 NFL Draft, but was released on August 6 when the Lions signed free agent tight end Carson Butler. Waters was re-signed less than two weeks later, and was 1-for-2 on field goal attempts in a pre-season game against the Cleveland Browns, connecting from 51 yards out.

The Lions released Waters five days later.

A Lou Groza Award finalist at Alabama-Birmingham, where he was first-team All-Conference USA as a junior, Swayze also handled the punting duties for the Blazers.

The Raiders signed kicker Sebastian Janikowski to a four-year, $16 million dollar contract extension earlier this off-season, and also have the NFL's highest-paid punter in Shane Lechler, so Waters faces impossibly long odds of making the Raiders' 53-man roster. This will, however, give him a chance to compete against two of the best in the game, which could help him land an opportunity elsewhere this season.
