Raiders Replace Russell With Michael Bennett

Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports the Oakland Raiders have filled the roster spot created by the release of quarterback JaMarcus Russell by signing veteran free agent running back Michael Bennett.

Bennett, 31, spent the last season and a half with the San Diego Chargers, who claimed him off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. Bennett appeared in six games for the Chargers, all in 2009, carrying the ball 23 times for 65 yards, adding six receptions for 65 yards and a pair of special teams tackles to his stat sheet, as well.

A first-round pick (27th overall) out of the University of Wisconsin by the Minnesota Vikings in 2001, Bennett has amassed 4,977 yards from scrimmage and 19 touchdowns during a 100-game career with the Vikings, Buccaneers, Chargers, and Kansas City Chiefs.

Bennett's best season came in 2002, when he set career-highs with 1,295 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns, and added 37 receptions for 351 yards, earning Pro Bowl honors after the season.
