The Associated Press reports that a jury has awarded former Miami Dolphins wide receiver O.J. McDuffie $11.5 million dollars in a lawsuit against Dr. John Uribe over treatment to a 1999 toe injury McDuffie feels prematurely ended his NFL career.
Uribe, a former team doctor for the Dolphins, plans to the appeal the verdict.
McDuffie, a first-round pick (25th overall) by the Dolphins in 1993, caught 415 passes for 5,074 yards and 29 touchdowns during his nine-year career, the entirety of which was spent with the Dolphins. McDuffie led the NFL in receptions in 1998, but injured his toe midway through the 1999 season and would catch just 22 passes for 232 yards in the 11 games he'd play in the remainder of his career.
McDuffie announced his retirement from the NFL in August of 2002.
