Dolphins Sign DE Charles Grant

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins have signed veteran defensive end Charles Grant to a two-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Grant (6-3, 290) was a first-round pick (25th overall) out of Georgia by the New Orleans Saints in 2002. In 118 career games, Grant totaled 423 tackles, including 47 quarterback sacks, with 16 forced fumbles and an interception.

After finishing the Saints' Super Bowl season on injured reserve (torn triceps), the Saints cut Grant, who had four years remaining on a seven-year, $52.7 million dollar contract, on March 5. Grant was scheduled to earn $4 million in base salary in 2010, which he's unlikely to earn from the Dolphins this season.

Grant's four-game suspension for using StarCaps diuretic remains on hold pending the Williams' Wall trial in Minnesota.

Miami recently lost a pair of defensive linemen for the season. Nose tackle Jason Ferguson, who was facing an eight-game suspension, retired, and defensive end Phillip Merling suffered a season-ending Achilles' tendon injury.

The Dolphins signed veteran defensive end Marques Douglas to a two-year, $2.5 million dollar contract last week.
