Browns LBs Bowens, Barton on Roster Bubble

Veteran linebackers David Bowens and Eric Barton, two 12-year veterans who followed head coach Eric Mangini to the Cleveland Browns last March, are both on the roster bubble, reports Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

"I'm uncertain," Bowens said of his spot on the roster. "Sometimes you get a sense of what's going on by what you're doing. I mean, in eight years I don't think I've played in the fourth quarter (of a pre-season game)."

Bowens started 15 of 16 games for the Browns last season, registering 71 tackles, 5.5 quarterback sacks, and an interception while playing with a left knee injury that has swelled up this summer, causing him out of the Browns' first two pre-season games.

"Last year was last year," said Bowens. "Eric (Mangini) knows me and my ability, but the new regime doesn't. That's why I'm uncertain."

Barton, who turns 33 next month, started eight games and made 58 tackles last season before landing on injured reserve with a neck injury. Barton is penciled in as the starter at left inside linebacker, but his age, recent injury history, and $2.3 million salary may prompt the Browns to go younger at the position.
