49ers Trade DL Kentwan Balmer to the Seahawks

The San Francisco 49ers have traded defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer to the Seattle Seahawks, Matthew Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports.

Terms of the trade are not known at this time.

The 6-4, 315-pound Balmer was never able to crack the 49ers' starting line-up, totaling just 19 tackles and a pass defensed in 27 games. Balmer injured his shoulder late in the 2009 season, but was expected to compete for a back-up role in 2010 before going AWOL last week to tend to "personal issues".

In Seattle, Balmer will be reunited with former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan, who selected Balmer out of North Carolina with the 29th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, and is now a member of the Seahawks personnel department.

Balmer will also be reunited former Tar Heels teammate E.J. Wilson, a fourth-round pick by the Seahawks in April. Balmer will likely be used inside at defensive tackle for the Seahawks, but has the size and strength to play the strong-side defensive end, as well.
