San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary has named Troy Smith the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.

Alex Smith will miss the next few weeks with a separated left (non-throwing) shoulder, and David Carr struggled to move the offense as his replacement during Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers.

A fifth-round pick (174th overall) by the Baltimore Ravens out of Ohio State in 2007, Troy Smith (6-0, 225) has appeared in just 14 games during his career, which included two starts late in his rookie season. Smith has completed 48-of-89 passes (53.9%) for 558 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception for a passer rating of 79.7.

The former Heisman winner has also gained 109 yards on 29 carries, with a pair of rushing touchdowns, and caught one pass for 36 yards in 2008 out of a "Wildcat" formation.

Tendered at the "Original Round" level as a restricted free agent this off-season, Smith was released by the Ravens on September 4 and signed with the 49ers two days later. He has been the 49ers' third quarterback during their 1-6 start to the season.
