49ers Sign RB Brian Westbrook

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have signed free agent running back Brian Westbrook.

Financial terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed.

A third-round pick in 2002 out of Villanova by the Philadelphia Eagles, Westbrook has gained 5,995 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns during his 8 seasons in the National Football League, while adding 426 receptions for 3,790 yards and 29 touchdowns as a receiver out of the backfield.

With over 10,000 all-purpose yards and 68 touchdowns, Westbrook has been one of the most productive running backs during the 2000s, earning two trips to the Pro Bowl (2004, 2007) and was once named first-team All-Pro (2007).

Westbrook will serve as the top back-up behind Frank Gore, likely seeing playing time on third downs. Westbrook, who turns 31 on September 2, drew interest from the Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins, and St. Louis Rams this off-season.
