What Is Jayden Reed's Ceiling?

Jayden Reed had the third most receiving yards by a rookie in Packers history, the most since 1978, and broke Green Bay's rookie record for receptions in a season. What could his ceiling look like?

Jayden Reed celebrated his 23rd birthday in one of the best ways a football player could ask for. On night two of the 2023 NFL Draft, he received a call from Brian Gutekunst. It was official: the Green Bay Packers were selecting Reed with the 50th overall pick.

Surrounded by family and friends at his draft party, Reed was overcome with emotion when the Packers called. His childhood dream had officially been realized.

"My girlfriend gave me some glasses. I got an Apple watch. But nothing tops this," said Reed when asked about which birthday presents he'd received. "This is all I could ever ask for. This is all I ever wanted forever in my life. So, this is a blessing."

Reed joked about being cautious when answering the phone because his caller ID read "scam likely." Instead, he received the best phone call of his life.

During the 2023 training camp, Reed delivered consistent performances, primarily playing in the slot with the first-team offense. Those who are active on X/Twitter likely saw numerous clips of him making plays.

In Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, Reed caught his first career touchdown and found the end zone twice that day. Throughout the season, he set a rookie reception record for Green Bay with 64, totaling 793 yards and 10 total touchdowns. Furthermore, over the past decade, 21 wide receivers have averaged more than 2.0 yards per route run in their rookie seasons, with the vast majority enjoying impressive careers. The Packers currently have three such players on their roster: Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, and Jayden Reed himself.

Throughout the season, it became clear that the Packers saw Reed as their "do-it-all" gadget player on offense. He played 478 snaps in the slot and 150 wide. In a brief sample, Green Bay even lined Reed up in the backfield for five snaps. Reed was heavily involved in the passing game. Additionally, Matt LaFleur designed some trick plays with Reed as a runner in jet sweeps, including a notable 32-yard touchdown against the Los Angeles Chargers that put the Packers up 7-3 early in the second quarter.

Reed could be the Packers' version of Deebo Samuel, but with more polished route-running ability. As a better route runner, Reed has the potential to be even more dangerous than Samuel is for the 49ers.

The Packers' receiver room complements Reed effectively. Watson serves as the deep threat option. Doubs specializes in contested catches, leading the team in this category last year. Wicks ranks among the league's top receivers for route running, finishing in the top three for slot receivers last season. He excelled in separation and post-throw performance from the slot, even outperforming Tyreek Hill in these aspects.

The beauty of Green Bay's current receiver room is that there isn't a clear number one option, so Reed won't be double or triple-teamed every week. With defenses not solely focused on him, he will have plenty of opportunities to disrupt opposing defenses. He has the skill to become a top versatile player in the league, which would greatly benefit the Packers.

In theory, the sky is the limit. In reality, Reed is surrounded by a slew of talented teammates at WR, TE, and RB, who will also be getting their fair share of touches and opportunities to make big plays. I don't think we necessarily need or want him to be a clone of Deebo Samuel, especially when it comes to the number of rushing attempts (although the decoy role is fine). We want to see him excel in the slot and further downfield as a WR. He seems to be a highly motivated player, and as long as he stays healthy he should have no problem breaking the 1000-yard hurdle, possibly on a regular basis.

My high school Civics teacher was a Korean War Veteran. He said if anyone ever tried to tell us that the sky was the limit for a ceiling, even in theory, we should say "aw, puhshaw" and walk away. Just passing it on.

My oldest boy was the in the first unit that got called up to the Space Force. The sky isn't the limit, it's just the starting point. Perspective. Aim High.

I did not like the Reed pick. I favor the taller, lanky types with a big catch radius. Still, after watching him play all 17 games and lead the team in receiving, I have only two words: Paul Warfield. Not really possible to keep him covered because he's so smooth, and he's a very good runner with the ball.

There is a theory that you try to stop one guy and make the others beat you. Reed will beat you.

Reed has had a similar life experience as Love. Both had loving dads who adored their sons. Both lost their dads as teens-Love was 14 and Reed was 15. They both have an emotional depth. I think Reed will be a star-like Love.

In my opinion, I also didn't like the Reed pick. I prefer the taller, leaner varieties with wide catch ranges. Having witnessed him participate in all 17 games and led the team in receptions, I can sum him up in two words: Paul Warfield. He is so fluid and an excellent ball runner that it is incredibly difficult to contain him. https://geometrydash-subzero.io

I really liked the pick of Reed when it happened, though I admit I totally missed him in my WR scouting last year. Just watching his highlights and seeing him go up and come down with almost every contested catch at his size told me his size wouldnt be an issue. I figured he would be used in the slot the most but really thought he could hold his own outside if they played him there and that proved to be true.

Best part about getting Reed at 50 was that Gute traded down twice from 45, first with the Lions where he received a 5th round pick that would be used to draft Dontayvion Wicks and then again with the Bucs for a 6th rounder that would be used to draft Karl Brooks. Not too fricken bad for only a 5 spot drop in the 2nd round. Some of Gutes best work right there!!

Sure we missed out on Brian Branch who we certainly could have used on defense last year but ask yourself this; would you trade Reed, Wicks and Brooks right now for Brian Branch?

Stockholder might but that wouldn't surprise anyone, would it?
