Veteran Signings Show Packers’ Shift in Urgency

Green Bay added older players to the team for the first time in the Jordan Love era.

The Packers traded Aaron Rodgers to the Jets less than three years ago, but in NFL terms, it feels like a lifetime.

Plenty has changed since then, with Green Bay quickly rebooting with a young core of players and not skipping a beat, making the playoffs in three straight seasons, even if the results have not been what the team or the fans would have ultimately hoped.

For three straight years, from 2023 to 2025, the Packers had the youngest team in the league, as the fledgling team grew around Jordan Love as the starting quarterback.

But Green Bay’s moves early in this offseason indicate a change in the air.

After shying away from adding older players to the roster since Rodgers departed, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has begun to dip into the experienced market once again as he looks to push his team over the top to win a championship.

The Packers did not have a single offensive or defensive player play a snap of football for them in 2025 while aged 30 or older. Elgton Jenkins was their oldest position player, and he did not turn 30 until December, after he had already been lost for the year.

There were only two players who got on the field on offense or defense for Green Bay over the age of 30 in 2024: Eric Wilson and Preston Smith, and Smith was traded at the deadline.

In 2023, it was David Bakhtiari and De’Vondre Campbell, along with Smith, who were still on the team as holdovers from the Rodgers era. Even then, Bakhtiari was barely able to play in what would turn out to be his final season.

Not including special teams, the Packers did not sign any players entering their age-30 season or older in 2025, 2024 or 2023. They made a commitment to getting younger after becoming a veteran-laden team at the end of Rodgers’ time in Green Bay.

In 2022, his last year with the team, the Packers had six position players in their age-30 season or older. That was the last time they signed such a player, adding Jarran Reed on a one-year deal.

They had seven players over 30 in 2021, including two that they signed in Dennis Kelly and Whitney Mercilus.

The Packers were trying to get over the hump and finally get back to the Super Bowl in those days. The moves they have made in the last few weeks are a strong sign they are firmly back in ‘win now’ mode.

First, Gutekunst traded away 25-year-old Colby Wooden for linebacker Zaire Franklin, who turns 30 in July. Franklin is really replacing Quay Walker who left in free agency, and who himself only turns 26 this year.

Their corresponding move to strengthen the defensive interior and essentially replace Wooden was to bring in 33-year-old Javon Hargrave, signing him to a pretty substantial two-year deal worth $23m.

Hargrave is the team’s oldest external free agent signing since they signed 35-year-old Tramon Williams in 2018.

Even cornerback Benjamin St-Juste is a little older for a Packers free agent signing. He will turn 29 in September and was signed to a two-year contract worth $10m.

Gutekunst has indicated multiple times he does not see the team’s youth as a problem as it pertains to closing out tight games in the playoffs, but these moves seem to indicate the Packers wanted to add some experience, and are ready to spend resources on short-sighted moves.

The Packers have shifted the dial further towards ‘all-in’ again after a patient approach over the last three seasons.

I will ask the big question, What have we accomplished by being the youngest NFL team the last 3 years? We saved some money but have nothing in important and playoff wins to show for it. Posters shot me down for it but a veteran like LB Bobby Wagner would have really helped solidify our run defense last year. Yeah he isn't great in coverage, neither is Walker. And Wagner had 160 plus tackles again last year. He is just an example of how a vet could help.

A Veteran TE would have really helped last year too. I and other posters made the point that depending on Musgrave if Kraft got hurt would kill us, and it did. GB doesn't want the oldest team either, but a sprinkling of still talented vets at key positions probably makes us a much more dangerous team now while we are in the window.

Vets I would like to see:
A J Epenesa-Edge
Zach Ertz-TE
Antonio Gibson-RB
Rasul Douglas or a younger vet CB who has started multiple seasons

"What have we accomplished by being the youngest NFL team the last 3 years?"

I'd argue the "youngest team" was a result of the rebuild strategy coming out from under the Rodgers/Bakhtiari/Z. Smith/Amos contracts and turning the roster over with bites at the apple. 2025 was the first draft in several years where the Packers didn't have 11+ picks--they likely won't have double-digit picks this year, and we're seeing the results of being young: you gotta let some guys walk.

Agreed that the "youngest team in the league" was more out of cap necessity than desired strategy. I do like that Gute is acquiring some older leadership for the team (Parson, Franklin) as youth can be talented, but veteran leadership is important over a long season. Teach the youngsters how to do it the right way.

They didn’t want Bobby Wagner to take snaps from young developing players like Cooper and Walker.

I agree they needed veteran depth at D-line after sending Clark to Dallas. But not Wagner.

It wasn't hype. I don't think Gutekunst even mentioned it. It was just something that got repeated by a lot of people on the internet. Hopefully it was just a phase that the team was passing through.

Back in 2023, Gute was asked if youth was a goal. His response was:

“I don’t think it was intentional to be young. I think our intention was to be athletic, fast and have a really competitive camp so the best guys rose to the top, and I think that’s what we accomplished. But it wasn’t just to be young.”

It was hyped by the media. They needed to get younger and cheaper to fit Love’s contract and get past the Rodgers/Bakhtiari era. They got rid of Crosby too. It was just a phase and is probably over.

We are filling holes for the short term to improve our draft options and cover for departures that didn’t quite work out as picks or tactical decisions last season. This is not a sign of going all in, but of a need to hold ground through tight cap and fewer top end picks.

Well, there's a Freudian slip...unless you really meant "short-term" (i.e. bridging) rather than "short-sighted" (rash or poorly thought-out).

I mentioned last week in reference to our GM being asked about this years draft strategy saying "we are drafting for players to play this season" which is a huge change in direction. Prior drafts targeted in the high rounds "developmental players" (Gary - VanEss) and players "believed to move to new positions in the pro's" (Morgan).

Again, I am hoping that the contract extensions contain team Opt Outs to lite a fire under our GM & Head Coach and that is the reason for the new strategy.

With the exception of QB, I certainly hope the Packers have been and will again draft players who will make the roster and can play this season as a starter or as a quality depth player.

I have never heard Gutey state post draft he got players that will need 2 or 3 years of development to earn quality snaps.

Less then 10% of draft picks turn into elite "great" players.
The more picks- means a Numbers Game.
Strong contributors are found in later rounds.
With contracts that are manageable.

I am now wondering that with Gutekunst's atypical off-season - will it extend to the draft? Confirmation will be provided if with pick 52 - he will select Jadarian Price (RB) or D'Angelo Ponds (CB). Both unlikely but ready to play this season in areas of need for the Packers.

so, the Patriots reloaded every year after winning championships and the Rams are doing that as well the Packers wasted years of great QB play with Favre and Rodgers while waiting for players to develop let's hope that's not the case for Love.

Umm the Patriots had Brady who took less than market price and they played in a non-competitive conference. Rams won one with Stafford. Only time will tell if their reload works this season. GB signed arguably the top pass rusher in the league. Maybe if he hadn’t gotten hurt, and Kraft had stayed healthy we would have been in the running for a title.

so now gutey Policy and the board parasites are saying they did everything wrong, It was a mistake to be the youngest team in the NFL.
they made huge mistakes and they are admitting that but they got contracts extended for 4 years.
at some point the whole organization will admit the last thing, they drafted a bust ruining the possibility to go to SB with Rodgers.

The Packers could do much much worse than the group they have running the team. They want a title as much as fans do and are doing what they believe is right to get there. Changing front offices from a group that has consistently won a lot of games seems much more risky than starting over with guys you don’t know while you’re in the prime of the young QB’s career and just having signed one of the best young pass rushers in the league.

Suppose the Seahawks quit on their GM after some bad seasons? No they stayed with the guy they believed in and they went back to the Super Bowl and won it.

Mark Murphy said SB is not the main goal, winning seasons are the main goal, so PS Bertha, a wild card, the North, are enough and are the best goal for GB business, in Murphy's words. he said the goal Is to avoid bad seasons...that Is why they never really went all in, they use draft & develop a lot

2025 - 9 wins, 7 losses, 1 tie; 2024 - 11 wins, 6 losses; 2023 - 9 wins, 8 losses; and 2022 - 8 wins, 9 losses. Sure doesn't incite a great gm or front office. Well maybe if you like average.

A factor not mentioned is the salary cap. While the national sports media dopes kept talking about how much cap space the Packers had after some cuts, the reality is they didn't have a ridiculous amount of cap space like the Raiders. So they were limited to mid-level players like St.- Juste and Hargrave. They also realized that with the crap shoot that is the draft they might not find a player to fill a need. That left them scrounging around in the NFL version of the clearance rack at a retail store.
When you sign a veteran player it automatically means they're a bit older, most of the time with at least three years in the league and often more. So it is logical that the team will be a little older. I don't know if it was a strategy as much as 'who is available at that price?".
Reports about St.-Juste indicated he was a reserve corner for the Chargers and simply wasn't as good as their starters. Hargave can be an animal as we've seen with his past teams, but he is 33 yo. The addition of Skyy Moore, while not an older player, was a shrewd move. His return ability takes the burden off other players and he has caught passes from Mahomes and Purdy.

Gute learned at the hip of Ron Wolf and "Tightwad' Ted Thompson. You can see a little of the influence of both men in Gute's decisions.

Moore has been a below average WR. He has potential as a returner in both the kick and punt game, be he was not hired to be a key WR.

As a KR only, he is expensive. And do not discount if he gets supplanted by Melton or a rookie or a FA with return ability.

I would've rather had Devin Duvernay returning kicks/punts for about the same money, a longer track record of being good at returns (and holding onto the football), and more of a track record as a WR.

Moore's got that one year in SF of decent returns on his resume. Maybe he keeps it up in GB. Maybe he dents the bottom of the WR depth chart.

Like Coldworld - I see Gutekunst filling potholes in order to create a more sustainable pathway into the future. However, what appears different from previous seasons - is that Gutekunst has changed and expanded his MO to create a more age and veteran diverse team. Perhaps he realized that he had to change his 'game' in order for the team to improve their's. This is "adaptability" - which has long been overdue by the FO. Still, better late than never.

AP, I don't know about that. Had young guys like Parsons, Kraft, Wyatt, Reed, Wicks, Banks been healthy all season...and should be for 2026 for the most part...changed the perception. While he did plug two obvious holes at DT and LB...but I don't think adding those two vets he has changed his MO.

Gutey loves his draft picks. At times, too much...but he gives them every chance to contribute.

And the Packers have a lot of void bills that will come due...and draft picks and UDFA to replace highly paid vets are needed to help pay those bills.

Agree - health is a significant factor to any Championship run. And frankly when Kraft tore his acl - I could see my Super Bowl wager going down the drain. While completely lost with the Parson's injury.

However what Gutekunst has performed this off-season is a nice bit of asset management. Jettisoning (for the most part) declining, expensive, inconsistent and out-of-place players - for cheaper and more proven replacements. Albeit just for the short term. But that works for long term planning. And with the Packers multiple picks next year - plus approximately 100M in cap sapce - I can see the Packers SB window remaining open for at least the next 3 years. So props to Gutekunst this off-season for doing the necessary and difficult work for keeping the road open.

Sound analysis. I agree with your "next three years" of open windows, especially if they will have $100 M cap in 2027. I did not know their 2027 cap would be that large.

That cap space will help keep their own ascending young players....Kraft, Watson, Reed, Wicks, Wyatt, and re-sign Cooper and Williams in that window.

I firmly believe Love is an ascending player...imagine Love's ceiling if he can play with an ascending OL.

And a feared Defense....

I like draft-and-develop, but also signing free agents on occasion if they are the right guys for the right price. I like signing Parsons. I like signing Franklin, St.-Juste, and Hargrave. Plus -- as I've already said before and possibly will say again -- I like that the Packers reached for the Skyy to put Moore into the return game.
I like mostly young players, but also sprinkling in some veterans. However, at least generally speaking, no big contracts for the long-term after age 30. Quarterbacks and kickers can be among the exceptions to the rule.
I like a defense that blitzes fairly often, but not all of the time.
I like an offense that mostly goes with the passing game, but does use the running game a fair amount.
In other words, it's generally good to have some balance, not necessarily 50-50, but enough to be flexible and unpredictable.

Swisch I would consider Sweat for Reed - especially in the Gannon defense. It's not like Reed has always been available and is now in the last year of his contract. Of course Reed is much cheaper but Sweat is still in his prime (28) - with 3 years remaining on a fairly reasonable contract at 19M annual salary. In the interim - perhaps a free agent, roster player or draft choice could replace Reed.

The youngest team thing is a bunch of bunk - more like drafting some guys who develop and develop quickly ie in year 2 or 3 - That is where on defense we have sucked. It is not like when we drafted guys that they ended up as a CM3 or that our Oline picks developed quick enough. We have not really hit on our first rounders - Stokes Walker Wyatt Van Ness Morgan and even Josh Myers - second rounders were not great - other than Watson Reed and hopefully Musgrave. These guys should have made our team much better despite their AGES had they developed like first rounders should - Some of it is the result of poor Oline coaching IMO and guys just not being what they had planned - Quay Walker
