Three Players to Watch in Week 18

Keep your eye on these 3 Packers this Sunday

Week 18 is here, and it’s essentially a glorified exhibition matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. The Green Bay Packers are locked into the 7th seed, and a win or loss does nothing for their playoff positioning. With that in mind, Matt LaFleur confirmed on Wednesday that the Packers are expected to rest key starters as much as possible. While LaFleur wouldn’t go into too much detail on who would and wouldn’t be seeing action on Sunday—instead saying it will be driven by medical evaluations—we can probably put together a fairly long list of players they will want to keep out of harm’s way.

Jordan Love, Josh Jacobs, Zach Tom, Xavier McKinney, and Christian Watson all top that list as likely inactives, but you would also think there are several others who will see their snaps reduced in favor of backups. With that being the case, we are sure to see lesser-used players receive an uptick in snaps. Who might shine with this opportunity? Three players immediately come to mind.

Kitan Oladapo-

The 2024 fifth-round safety has been on the roster all season, playing strictly special teams. This Sunday could be a chance for him to see some extended action on the defensive side of the ball. He has logged just two snaps at his natural safety position all season, but with Xavier McKinney likely sitting and Evan Williams being one of the players the Packers will want to ease the load on entering the postseason, someone is going to have to roam the secondary—and Oladapo is the next man up.

Oladapo has good size for the position at 6’2” and 216 pounds and plays a physical brand of football, both on special teams and during his time at Oregon State. He’s just been buried behind two of the best safeties in football.

Unlike some of the other young players on this roster, Oladapo isn’t going to turn this audition into a chance at a starting role next season, as McKinney and Williams aren’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future. However, he does have a chance to stake his claim for a 2026 roster spot. The further we get from his draft class, the less his status as a former draft pick will matter when it comes to roster decisions. He’ll need to show what he can do on defense, and Week 18 should provide a good opportunity. Zayne Anderson was just placed on injured reserve, and Javon Bullard will likely man the slot (if he plays) on Sunday, so we could see an all-safety duo of Oladapo and Jonathan Baldwin against the Vikings.

Collin Oliver-

“Baby Micah” should finally get his chance to see the field on Sunday when the Packers head to Minnesota. Oliver has missed a significant amount of time for a rookie—all of the offseason program, training camp, and most of the regular season—before being activated off IR two weeks ago. I, for one, was excited when Gutekunst selected Oliver in the fifth round of this past draft.

He brings a different element to this Packers pass-rush group than anyone besides Micah. A speed rusher who racked up 134 total quarterback pressures at Oklahoma State, Oliver offers versatility, with the ability to play along the edge or at inside linebacker. A sharp defensive mind like Jeff Hafley could find the best spot for the young pass rusher and help him flourish—once he’s able to get on the field, that is.

Since he missed so much time, it was unrealistic to think he would be thrown onto the field and see a lot of snaps in meaningful action. After all, he has played a total of just two football games since the end of the 2023 college season. The Packers weren’t going to give him snaps over the likes of Lukas Van Ness, Kingsley Enagbare, or even Brenton Cox Jr. while trying to lock up a playoff spot. But now that they have an entire game of snaps to distribute and nothing at stake, let the young man loose and see what he can do.

Matthew Golden-

This one might be cheating a little bit because Golden has been playing all year and has seen action at his natural position in every game he’s played during his rookie season. But let’s be honest—it’s been very underwhelming for a first-round pick.

Things started out alright when you look at his usage during the first few weeks of the season. From Weeks 1–7, he played 66 percent of the offensive snaps. He didn’t find the end zone or produce the stats we’d expect from a high draft pick (although 249 receiving yards isn’t terrible), but that was acceptable as he found his footing in the offense. Surely he would rack up numbers in the second half of the season, right? Wrong.

In the games played since Week 7, he has surpassed 40 percent of snaps just one time. If you remember, what’s one big thing that happened right around Week 7? The return of Christian Watson. Golden was supposed to fill the deep-threat role while Watson rehabbed his ACL injury, and then, upon Watson’s return, the Packers would have one of the fastest wide receiver duos in football. But Golden has not been able to fill that role—or really any role—in 2025.

He has just 104 yards in his last seven games while battling shoulder and wrist injuries. With Watson likely being rested, starters Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs to likely be on a pitch count, and Dontayvion Wicks in the concussion protocol, we might see Golden not only start on Sunday but play a significant portion of the game. In a meaningless game on a fast track, I wouldn’t be opposed to a game plan built around seeing what your first-round wide receiver can do when given a real opportunity. He might even have his former quarterback at Houston, Clayton Tune, throwing him the ball.

All three of these players can parlay what should be extended playing game in week 18 into a larger role next season. Gloried preseason games during the regular season are not always the most fun for fans but when you change your mindset on winning and losing to watching a few key players than there is something valuable to be gained.

Let's hope Oliver provides a happy twist to the pass rush going forward; that Matthew comes up golden in the playoffs; and that Oladapo helps the Packers win the whole kitan-kaboodle come February 8th.

For all the out-of-market fans, it's that time of the season to take advantage of the YouTube $4.99 special. I haven't had to go out to watch the last eight games, so even a cheapskate like me can spring for this unnecessary pleasure.

I’m going to be watching Hopper in addition to Oladapo on D and Cox and Sorrell in hopefully a decent number of opportunities as well as Oliver.

My major interest at WR is who ends up playing Doubs’ role (if it’s not Doubs)? I’m also curious to see who plays LT if Walker is rested. If Rhyan still has a bad knee then presumably Monk gets time, perhaps alongside Jennings. Is there anything there?

Based on what I saw of Tune last week (ignoring the interception that was possibly his best throw), I’m not expecting much in the way of receiving numbers. Any wins are going to be from unheralded types stating a claim to be more than that. It’s Preseason in January. Who knows, maybe Tune will surprise after a week as the man in practice?

Yep, the anticipation and excitement of this game is who may step up -- and perhaps carry it forward into the playoffs.
***
Different circumstances, but still seemingly worth noting: In the 1967 season (in which the Packers would go on to win the Super Bowl against the Raiders for their third straight championship), the Packers had a meaningless game at the end of the regular season against the Rams.
The Packers already knew they were in the playoffs, and may have known that they would face the Rams once again, and right away, in the first round.
Lombardi decided to go all out for the victory, anyway. He refused to concede any game, to do anything at less than full tilt.
As I understand it, that Packers-Rams finale in the regular season was a great game, although the Packers lost. (I was only age 5, and so blissfully oblivious to such matters) In the playoff game the next week, though, the Packers dominated in a win.
My takeaway and application to the Packers of 2025-2026 in this game against the Vikes: Play to win. Play hard and smart. Go all out.
That doesn't mean we have to play Love and any other starters for whom the rest and recovery would be better. However, whoever is out there, make the most of this game.
As in the more recent team history of 2010, let's see just how far the Packers can go as the last seed. Maybe one or more of our players heretofore in the background will shine forth and help us to shock the NFL.
Why not maximize the opportunity for glory, one game at a time?

He will be eligible to come off injured reserve and play if they make it to the second round of the playoffs. I doubt that he will be more than an emergency option even if that happens, though.

Lay off the criticism of Golden. Who says the first round pick has to be Pro Bowler his first year? Perhaps MLF's run-pass ratio of 50-50 had something to do with it? Perhaps the fact that they have many players as potential targets is another. I really don't like dropping bombs on rookies. If he's still quiet by his third year, then maybe. The Packers are likely to start CLAYTON TUNE against the Vikings. So if he can't get the ball to Golden is that the nail in the coffin for Golden?

Golden was making catches when the preferred Wr's were dropping balls half the season....The only problem with Golden is his HC poor ability to mesh him into a more prominent role as the #2 WR in the system....ML did the same thing with one of the best TE's in the NFL in Kraft who forced his way up his catches he made while blocking a ton more than he should have masking our OL weaknesses. If there is a problem with Golden it's all the Coaches fault.

I don't know how you can be sure of that. Golden played quite a lot before he got injured. His production was not great, but it was not terrible either. Was he getting open, but they weren't throwing the ball to him? I have no idea.

I think what set Golden back was when Jayden Reed got hurt, and Wicks was also hurt, so Golden had to play in the slot a lot, which was new for him. He's a smaller receiver, but he seems like a better fit on the outside. By the time Jayden Reed came back, Christian Watson was also back and was playing great, so there was no prominent role for Golden. That's okay. He's just a rookie.

There is no NFL rule that you can't have multiple fast deep threats on the same play. Not having #0 9 &11 on the field at the same time is a crime against football.

WRONG greg C Goldens catch rate is basically 80%....Same as Doubs OR the second highest on the team...with less targets...Because our HC is focused on losing games, instead of giving the players with the best hands , help win some games and grow our offense into the juggernaut it could be with a little common sense.

Catch rate is a horrible metric. Remember that metric is catches ÷ targets. It doesn't matter if the ball is uncatchable and you're the target of the pass it will hurt your catch rate. It over inflates things for passes close to the LOS and hurts things for WRs running deep.

Catch rate says nothing about how often a receiver gets open. If you have proof that Golden is getting open and they're not throwing him the ball, then you might be onto something. But if you think our coach is trying to lose games, it's not worth discussing anything with you anyway.

I see him open....and GB coaching staff are not elite. GB just made an NFL record for 3 games losses without punting the ball....Congrats. There is a you tube video by Steve Smith saying Golden is in an NFL system where each receiver runs specific routes and GB does not throw to Golden even if he's open most of the time and that Golden has been limited by Gb on the route types they are using him for.....GB Coaches are dumb..and they will FINALLY use Golden right before he gets paid and waste 4 years he could be leading the WR's in the post season.
If he isn't a top NFL WR in GB next season, he should request a trade to an NFL team that can use a top level talent like they are suppose to.Plus Love does not throw to him and is blowing his reads to his route at an alarming rate.

JJ McCarthy is going to play. I would watch him. If he has a good game and looks decent then I would be very worried next year, that defense isnt going away any time soon and were not getting better any time soon. Toss in the Bears and the Lions must get a little better they cant get any worse then they are now, maybe and were fighting for the last spot in the NFC North next year.
No number one picks next two years, many holes to fill in the secondary and a hope a guy who costs us a ton o money comes back to play with a passion or just goes thru the motions.

I'm not so sure Maj Payne. So much talk about Flores taking a HC job. And that defense is loaded with free agents needing new contracts. Minne will have to do some major payroll gymnastics to keep this group together.
