This Elite Packers Player Doesn't Get the Respect He Deserves

The Green Bay Packers have some very talented players on their roster. Players like Micah Parsons, Xavier McKinney, and Jordan Love get plenty of attention from the local and national media. But the Packers have another elite player who we hardly hear anything about, but who deserves more respect from fans and media alike and that is punter Daniel Whelan.

In 2025, Whelan accomplished something that had never happened in the first century plus of Packers football. He led the NFL in punting. While playing in the wind swept, frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. Whelan set a Packers franchise record last season by averaging 51.7 yards per punt which led the NFL in gross average. He placed 18 punts inside the opponent’s 20 and had just eight touchbacks on the season. Somehow, he was not voted to the All-Pro Team although Pro Football Focus voted him to their All-Pro Team.

The Packers special teams have struggled for years but punting has not been a problem since Whelan arrived in 2023. Whelan has also done a good job for the Packers as the team’s holder for field goals and extra points.

Entering training camp for the 2026 campaign, Whelan and long snapper Matt Orzech are the only two players on the roster with zero competition at their respective positions. Whelan is under contract with the Packers through the 2027 season, so the Packers appear set at punter for the next two years.

Orzech has been impressed by Whelan since he arrived in Green Bay. “Bombs,” Whelan said in January when asked about Whelan’s punts. “Honestly. From the day he showed up from the UFL, it was immediately obvious that his leg explosion was pretty impressive. I’ve never seen somebody who hits 5.0-plus [hangtime] punts consistently. Even in crazy wind or cold, there’s still going to be a 5.0 on the chart for the day, which is unbelievable. It’s crazy.”

Bo Melton, who has played on punt coverage teams over the last two years has also been impressed with Whelan. “He boots that ball so far,” Melton said. “Daniel is that guy. He has that boot. Just blessed to be on a team where he can punt that thing and give his guys time to get down there.”

Punting remains a key part of winning in the NFL. Being able to back the opposing team up and win the field position battle is vital especially in close games.

The Packers have all been impressed with what Whelan has brought to the team. Head coach Matt LaFleur has been pleased with his punter. “He's a great dude, great in the locker room, but he's a real weapon out on the field in terms of being able to flip the field,” LaFleur told Packers.com. “I feel like anytime we've gotten in some of those critical moments where we really need a great kick, he's come through for us.”

Whelan traveled back to his native Ireland in February as an ambassador for the Packers and the NFL. He took part in a program called the Green and Gold Gathering which was done in conjunction with Packers fan clubs across Ireland.

“I’m so excited to spend time with Packers fans in Ireland and the UK on this unique trip,” said Whelan in a news release. “Being born in Ireland and spending half my life there, plus having my dad living in the UK, I already have special connections to many places in Ireland and the UK. I’m looking forward to creating even more. Sports play such a central role in culture and tradition on both sides of the Atlantic, and I can’t wait to celebrate that shared passion while helping to grow the Packers’ presence internationally. Sports play such a central role in culture and tradition on both sides of the Atlantic, and I can’t wait to celebrate that shared passion while helping to grow the Packers’ presence internationally.”

Whelan was likely disappointed that he didn’t get All Pro recognition after his outstanding 2025 campaign, but winning a championship is more important to him than individual awards.

“I just like winning but, obviously, it’s good to have some recognition behind it, as well, but the main goal’s to win a Super Bowl,” Whelan said. “If the punt team’s doing well, you’re probably going to win the game.”

Nobody ever talks about Whalen, he just goes about his job and does it great with no fanfare. How refreshing. It's a bonus to have such a player and have no worries about the position. Hopefully Smack turns into a 10 year Packer and Moore can upgrade the return game. Wouldn't it be great to have a Top 5 special teams unit? That would make a huge impact on the O & D.

Punting is a bit like the OL in that when you don't hear too much, things are going well.

Whelan has been an excellent punter for the Packers. He has flipped the field on numerous occasions with his exceptionally strong leg. He definitely deserves more recognition than he has received. I think that if the Packers could go further into the playoffs he would get more national exposure and more recognition. He should have received a pro bowl selection for his 2025 performance. He has become one of the few bright spots on Packer STs. The first in a long time. Now if Smack can do the same for FGs and PATs the Packers can finally move past their ST nightmares, hopefully. They still need to be able to recover onside kicks.
Thanks, Since '61

I think what Whelan brings is dramatically enhanced by his oft cited ability as a holder. Certainly he’s visibly rescued some atrocious snaps, but also virtually everyone involved has cited his contribution in that regard. As a punter he’s improved consistently I think in terms of placement but perhaps has room to add there. I am glad we have him. He’s not truly elite, but he could be on the way to being that and is definitely good at this point.

They call them punters, or punter/holders, but the reality is that they're holders on many more plays than they are punters, and that every hold has points on the line.

Only one way the special teams can go….it appears we bottomed out.

We haven’t had a return guy since back in 2002 or so.

Then we let him go to Atlanta

Forgot his name.

Well I forgot Nixon. I think both Nixon and more should be back for kick offs

#25 is not the same guy who returned punts for us anymore. Not only is he older, he's lighter. He changed his body to be better as an outside CB, making him less able to endure the contact a returner gets. He was good at it for a couple seasons though.

The current highest paid punter in the League is A.J. Cole (Raiders) @ 3.95 M AAV. Whelan ranks 5th @ 3.1 M AAV. So he is certainly "respected" in monetary terms.

Whelan is 6'5" which could be an asset in the event of a high snap from center. We don't see it often, but a high snap that exceeds the reach of the punter can be a game changer.

Whelan gets us out of trouble whenever the offense cannot move the ball. The Packers had another punterlike that, a while ago, named Craig Hentrich. Hentrich would always pin the opponent deep, in their own territory, after the offense sputtered. We lost Hentrich to FA. Let's not lose Whelan!

This is not an argument with anything you said, but since you mention Hentrich: it may come as a surprise to some fans that Whelan's numbers so far are actually waaaaaay better than Hentrich's -- almost shockingly so.

Hentrich's best season ever for gross and net were both in 1998 -- 47.2 gross and 39.2 net. That was in TENN. That ain't close to what Whelan did at 51.7 gross and 43.9 net in Green Bay.

Career numbers are also wildly in Whelan's favor: Hentrich 42.9 / 39.2 to Whelan's 47.8 / 41.3. I understand that Whelan has a smaller sample size, And Hentrich was 25 years ago. But still...

My only gripe is that he seems to outkick his coverage a little too often and that leads to some returns, but that might be a matter of poor gunner play and inability to get off jams, too. Sometimes it seemed the coaching made some questionable calls late in games to kick to dangerous returners rather than directional kicking/kicking OOB.

Otherwise: big leg, consistent...I think he's worth every penny.

The same was true about Mason Crosby, he was terrific considering the conditions he kicked in. Remember when Dandy Don Meredith referred to Lions kicker Herman Weaver as "Thunder Foot", that would be the perfect nickname for Whelan, the Packers are fortunate to have acquired him, lets hope he spends his career in Green Bay,
