These Aren't The Same Ole Lions

Sunday night is for all of the marbles for the Green Bay Packers. Win, and they're in. But they will have their work cut out for them against a much-improved Lions squad.

With far more losing seasons than playoff appearances since the turn of the century, the Detroit Lions have been the laughing stock of the NFL for quite some time. The 2022 Lions? A completely different story. After starting the season in typical Detroit fashion (read: 1-6), the Dan Campbell-led Lions have won seven of their last nine games and, with some help from the Seattle Seahawks and a victory on Sunday, will be back in the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season. The chief reason why? A stellar offense through the air, especially the latter half of the season.

From Week 1 until Week 9, the Lions’ passing offense ranked 13th in DVOA (11.7 points above the league average). However, from Week 10 until Week 17, the passing offense has ranked 2nd in DVOA (47.5 points above the league average).

Plus, since the Lions beat the Green Bay Packers in Week 9, a game that was as embarrassing as we have seen for the Packers under head coach Matt LaFleur, Detroit is second in points scored. Overall, the Lions are fifth in points scored (27.1 points per game); fourth in yards per game (383.6); and sixth in yards per play (5.9).

Quarterback Jared Goff, who many believed that his best days were behind him after Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay decided to swap the Cal product for Matt Stafford via trade, has had a resurgence this year. Goff has only tossed seven interceptions, his lowest output since his second year in the league (2017), and has gone eight straight games without an interception. His 100.1 passer rating – his best since 2018 – ranks 7th in the NFL. Oh, and his 29 touchdown passes – the most he has thrown in a single season since, again, 2018 – ranks fourth in the league.

Goff’s resurgence is aided by his second-year wide receiver, Amon-Ra St. Brown. The 2021 fourth round selection has accumulated 100 receptions in 2022, the first Lions wide receiver to reach that figure since Calvin Johnson in 2012, to go along with 1,112 receiving yards and six touchdowns. St. Brown, ranked ninth among wide receivers in Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement (DYAR, which “means a wide receiver with more total value” per Football Outsiders) in 2022, is one of three players in NFL history to register at least 90 receptions and 900 receiving yards in each of their first two seasons, joining Michael Thomas and Odell Beckham.

St. Brown was limited to four catches (on nine targets) for 55 yards in the Week 9 matchup between the two squads. Since then, he has averaged nearly eight receptions for 89 yards per game. Cornerback Jaire Alexander & Co. were able to completely eliminate Minnesota Vikings star receiver Justin Jefferson last week, holding him to one reception for 15 yards in a monstrous victory for the Packers. Will defensive coordinator Joe Barry be able to scheme up the same looks against St. Brown and take away Goff’s primary receiving option?

Even if so, the Packers will still have to devote attention to D.J. Chark. Chark has been hurt most of the year but since Week 12, he has had three games of at least 90 receiving yards (Week 13, Week 14, and Week 16).

Luckily, the Packers’ secondary, and defense as a whole, has been up to the task during their four-game winning streak. They have forced 12 turnovers during that stretch and have done so by employing quite a bit of Cover 2 or Cover 6 (45.7% of the defensive snaps since the Week 14 bye have consisted of either of those coverages, per Daire Carragher) and by blitzing at the lowest rate in the NFL as of late.

On the other side of the ball, well, there is a reason why the Lions do not own a better record. In other words, the Packers should be able to exploit the Lions’ leaky run defense. Detroit is allowing 149.3 rushing yards per game (29th), 5.3 yards per carry (30th), and 1.4 rushing touchdowns per game (30th). And as Zach Kruse pointed out, the Lions are allowing 6.7 yards per carry on runs out of the shotgun formation. Do you know which team loves running out of the shotgun as much as a fat kid loves chocolate cake (nothing wrong with the latter, of course)? The Packers.

Altogether, I will be waiting all weekend for Sunday night to see whether the Packers can clinch their fourth playoff appearance in as many years, fully aware of the fact that they will need to bring their A-game because these aren’t the same ole Lions.

Sure, not as definitive as we'd hope, but it does look like he's not as good as at home. You know what else jumped out at me? Fewest yards in a game was vs. Green Bay Packers. I know our offense failed repeatedly in the red zone but wasn't that also the game where the refs were calling offensive pass interference or illegal blocks for our receivers bumping into corners as they ran their routes on run plays?

The Lions have rarely been an easy win for the Packers the last few years. Even the year they went winless, the Packers had a tough fight against them. Division games are always weird. After all, who was predicting the dominant game against Minnesota last week? Get ready for a tough game against an opponent that will be coming with their "A" game, even if they are eliminated from the playoffs before game time.

Yes lions have always played well against the packers these last few years and coming to this year they are more dangerous than the Vikings. They are playing some fearless game, so if our defense plays like how it has been playing these last 4 games and limit the lions to under 24 points i think the offense will able up that win us this game.

Go Pack Go.

I was just a kid but remember that very well. What a shocking loss , even living in CT everyone couldn't believe Lombardi allowed that to happen. After losing to the Eagles being so fresh in their minds. We knew the team was going to hear it from him. I later came to Hate Thanksgiving games because it then became associated with the Cowboys. Always felt that we should play the lions every Thanksgiving to punish them. Be nice to start this weekend

Yes Tundra I was still pretty young myself. The Packers were on their way to an undefeated season when they lost that game to the Lions. They finished the '62 season 13-1 and went on to win their second consecutive NFL Championship against the Giants at the original Yankee Stadium 16-7.

I too began to hate Thanksgiving Day games then as well. I still believe that if the Packers had the full week to prepare they would have won the game and remained undefeated in 1962. To this day I still dislike Thanksgiving day games and TNF. Unnecessary money grabs by the league.

Agree punish the Lions this Sunday. Thanks, Since '61

The Lions need unlikely help from the Rams, not the Seahawks.

Hopefully the Packers will be smart and patient enough to run the ball a lot more than they did last time. If they do it will reduce the possibility of any unnecessary shootouts. And hopefully they have learned something from their previous red zone/goal line follies with some fresh approaches down there; we're going to need TDs, not FGs. I'm expecting a win.

If ARod doesn't have the worst Red Zone game of his career, the Packers would have won that first game easily. That being said, the Lions are going to come to play. I think the Packers are the better team, playing at home against a Dome team who isn't used to Primetime football. Go Pack Go!!!!

For what it's worth.

Goff's 2022 numbers:
4214 yds 29TDs/7INTs 64.9% 7.6 YPA 62.6 QBR

Rodgers 2022 numbers:
3490 yds 25/11 64.7% 6.8 YPA 39.6 QBR

Goff leads Rodgers in every statistical category. This isn't the same ole Goff or Rodgers. Should be an interesting matchup.

What anybody has done prior to Sunday doesn't matter. What matters is what they do on Sunday. I'm hoping to see the Rodgers from the Cowboys game and the run game offense and passing game defense from the Vikings game. I don't know who will come out on top, but these aren't the same Packers from the first matchup this year either. Can they put it together in all 3 phases? They'll need to if they don't want to be done for the season.

Yeah. That's where it's going to be settled. I think we're going to push those weaklings right out of the way. They can't stop a sneeze.

Especially after Minnesota last week, if there was ever a time to just run over somebody, this is it. January in Green Bay. A real weak defense on a team that has nothing to play for by the time the game starts. Just maul these guys.... No need to get fancy.

Leatherhead, I'd argue that the matchup to watch is actually the Packers D-line vs the Lions O-line.

I'm looking for more consistent pocket pressure and run-stuffing if the Packers are to progress deep into the playoffs.

Like you said, the Lions fate may well be decided by the time kickoff comes around - that said, I can't see them rolling over and gifting a division rival an easy run into the playoffs.

LH I agree completely. Just run them out of the stadium. Don't stop, all gas, no letup regardless of the score or the time remaining in the game. Keep Goff and the Lions offense off the field. Play with the same attitude on defense that we had against the Vikings. Dominate both sides of the LOS and dictate the game to the Lions.

A lot of people just getting ready to blame Rodgers if they don't make it into the postseason. It makes them feel better somehow to trash a player that has brought us the best offensive football I've seen from this team, ever. And I've been watching since the days of Bart Starr. He's having a down year, so yes, let's bring on the hate and forget two seasons of MVP awards in a row. Anybody think the Packers get close to winning 13 games each of the 3 previous seasons without Rodgers? But that's the way of fans. People even hating on Bakhtiari for missing games related to an emergency appendectomy. These players are human beings, who put their bodies on the line for our entertainment week after week (Damar Hamlin reminded us of that). Rodgers has put his body on the line for years. I remember his fearlessness being one of the qualities Vic Ketchmann cited as evidence of his greatness. Rodgers didn't give up on this season, and neither did the team. But the fans sure did. However it turns out on Sunday, I'm proud of the entire squad and the coaching staff for turning things around.

Blaming Rodgers for a loss is common place. He didn't have to force the ball to DA against the Bucs... There are plenty of times Rodgers deserved the blame for a loss, there is also plenty of evidence he's been to blame for a great many wins too. He is a future HOFer after all...

I would love nothing better than the AR haters to have to listen to announcers and writers singing his praises Sunday night/Monday morning. I'm afraid if he plays like crap, there will be a lot of fans who normally support AR ready for him to move on if he doesn't lead us to victory Sunday Night. $50 million a year, he has to win the meaningful games.

From here on out it's win or go home. I for one am hoping for the miracle, but in the event we lose Sunday night or in the playoffs, I am sure part of the blame will have to rest squarely on 12's shoulders.

AR is definitely fearless, which can get him into trouble too. Lets hope he is peak AR from here on out. Would make for a great story.

IDK man, I kinda take the approach that if you're wearing green and gold, I'm supporting you. Management decides who plays. My job is just to enjoy the game and I find it easier to do that without hating on people but that's just my approach - I'll still be a fan of whoever the GB QB is regardless of the outcome.

Dan Campbell will spring the TEs. The cooler weather will slow down Williams. He isn't as big as Watson. Savage is the key as the nickel. He has to continue to play soundly and loose to the ball. The Pack is in good shape with De'Vondre Campbell and Walker roaming the hook zones. Play fast and swarm to the ball. The O line will set the tone on their side of the ball. Continue pushing Deguara out in front of the RBs.

Homefield should be a bit of an advantage here. My only concern is that GB doesn't comes out completely flat. They have a history of not showing up for reasons unknown. Let's all hope this isn't a letdown game from the beat down last weekend against the Queens. We have a great streak going, healthy players, home field, with an ever so slight feeling of destiny lurking quietly and cautiously above. If Seattle loses, this will launch a very inspired Lions team into our laps. If Seattle wins, this will be a Detroit team who will view this game as a Super Bowl, a sweep, and a spoiler all at once. My gut is telling me that I have no clue how this plays out. Regardless, I'm gonna grill my 45 day dry aged Picanha and sip on some Buffalo Trace prior to. GPG----F'n A

I'm still surprised a clash between two teams vying for the last seed in the playoffs, a seed that didn't exist until a couple years ago, is the primetime Sunday night game to finish the regular season. That said, it'll be a great game. Both teams have looked different in the second half of their seasons, both have offenses capable of scoring lots of points. Whichever team's defense can limit the scoring will win. If the Packers win convincingly, look out NFC! Wouldn't be the first time they got hot as the lowest seed in the playoffs.

The Packers/Lions game was moved into the Prime time game because of Rodgers. Rodgers will draw the highest TV ratings of any other game. If the Packers win the league will be pushing the packers streak to reach the playoffs as their return from the dead.

It's all about Lambeau, the cold, the weather and the Packers reaching a play in game. TV ratings first, that's what the league is about now. Thanks, Since '61

People have floated theories about how the Lions will play based on the likely Seattle victory: The Lions will lay down if they know they're already out of the playoff running, or they'll cut loose and give everything they've got in order to deliver a final, battleclysmic roar to the NFL. (To be clear, "battleclysmic" is not-not a word.)

Two very important dumb things to think about:

1) The Seattle game doesn't matter much. Whether the Lions are still in the playoff hunt or not, they'll probably pull out all the stops v the Packers. Fake punts. Surprise onside kicks. Gadget plays galore. This alone could keep them in the game or even earn them a win if the Pack aren't prepared.

2) That said, which team is actually battle-tested and better prepared to meet this moment? Which team has the intangibles that will propel them to victory--team effort, individual players being heroes, destiny, fate, star sprinkle, etc.? I'm voting for the Packers on this one. This week.

* Important Bonus Thought: Beer Cheese and Brats pizza is a real thing that you should make at home and enjoy. Crispy yet chewy dough. Bubbly beer cheese sauce. Toasted brat bites and sweet grilled onions on top.

** More Important Bonus Thought: It's a game. Have fun. You don't get on a roller coaster to enjoy the landing.

These may not be the same ol' Lions, but they are indeed the Lions. Dan Campbell is a likeable dude, and a gift from Central Casting for the role of Head Football Coach. He played tight end on a losing Super Bowl team. He was a hell of a blocker. He had his appendix removed and returned to play 10 days later. He listens to Metallica. He's also being feted because the Dee-Troit franchise has been so godawful. Consider:

- Ford Field was built in 2002. The Lions have played ZERO playoff games at Ford Field.

- With a win on Sunday night, the Lions will have achieved their ninth winning season in the last 30 years. THIRTY YEARS!

- The Lions allowed Matt Millen to pretend to be GM for SEVEN full years.

- The Lions have drafted 14 top 10 picks in the last 20 years.

The list of past failures is extensive. They're 8-8 FFS. The Packers handed them a win earlier this season. I believe Rodgers has taken that to heart and will exact revenge accordingly. Our OL is healthy. Our D is coming off a big win. Our ST are improved. Yes, these aren't the same ol' Lions, but the are a team led by a loveable talking bicep, and a skittish QB who can develop a case of the milligrubs very quickly. They haven't won squat. The Lions can't win this game unless the Packers hand it to them.

The past does three things.

1) It ends at some point.
2) It catches up to you at some point.
3) It has the present ending like the past.

Which applies to Det and GB might become the new future for both. I think Campbell has the Lions and their FO realizing this. I think GB is still is a mire of uncertainty. I don't think this game is just about a Playoff spot. At least for one team, and that makes them, a dangerous opponent.

I expect GB to win, but wouldn't be shocked if they lose.

I always appreciate your thoughtful insights, Taryn. I find the concept of the past is always relative to the present moment, and the present is always changing, so the past is always changing as well. With that in mind, the past is always with us in the present, and it is always possible to remember or think about events that happened in the past. Today is only yesterday's tomorrow, if you will. The past is no place to live, that's for sure.

I agree, this is more than a game about a playoff spot for the Lions. It will be an attempt to cast off generational trauma and begin again. Culture change. Paradigm shift. That may happen in the future for this collection of athletes, or others who dress like them in Honolulu blue and silver. I don't see it happening Sunday night, but, then again, my record of foreseeing events is suspect at best. I'm much more skilled at predicting the past.

Yes. After all, today is yesterday's tomorrow.

I expect the Pack to win if they play to their players strengths vs the lions weakness:

Run to set up the pass...maul them in the run game then pass when they are gassed.
Target the D talent to the Detroit O weaknesses. Man on ESB's little brother with Alexander the Great and pressure Goff from everywhere, especially from the D line and target blitzes from Walker and a DB from time to time.
STs...no fakes, no kicks blocked, but continue to block like demons for K. "I am not a Fluke" Nixon.

Since then they have won one playoff game back in 1992. Since the merger they haven't even sniffed playing in an SB.

Say what you will about "not the same ol' lions" and such, I'm not even sure that that means. But I'm pretty sure about this... Lions players are handing out bulletin board material ripping Rodgers and the Packers, saying that they're "not the same ol' Lions" and that they've "turned it all around." And people are taking this seriously.

Um... THEY'RE 8-8! THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE THAT THEY WILL END THE SEASON WITH A LOSING RECORD AND MISS THE PLAYOFFS!!! And they're thumping their chests as if these were the marks of a good team!

Meanwhile in Green Bay, the Packers and their fans sit at exactly the same record at the Lions, but are pretty strongly favored to squeak into the playoffs. In Green Bay, this qualifies as the worst season in recent memory. People are nervously optimistic that maybe, just maybe, the Pack can still salvage something, even though with one week remaining they aren't standing any better than the Lions... the Lions! ... who somehow think that they're an awesome team. LOL

I dunno. Seems like the same ol' lions to me.

The lions have won 7 of their last 10, while Green bay has won 5 of their last ten. There's a good chance the Packers will end their season with a losing record and miss the playoffs.

The difference right now between the Packers and the Lions is history, and that affects attitude. The Lions are trying to snap out of a culture of losing, and they are hungry and feel they must force other teams to respect them.

The Packers are used to being dominant in the North, and feel like their rightful place is, naturally, at the top.

The only difference in how these teams are perceived right now is based on history, not performance. One of those two criteria actually matters, the other actually doesn't.

Not sure who you're talking about, but who is perceiving these teams differently? Pretty sure I said that this was the worst Packer season is recent memory, and that we are sitting in exactly the same place that the Lions are.

Sitting at 8-8 with no guarantee to make the playoffs is the very definition of a mediocre squad at best, and I don't give a crap if we're talking about the Packers or the Lions (or the Bucs or whoever). 8 and 8 doesn't give anyone the right to mouth off about not being respected, as if they somehow deserved it, nor does it imply that they have "turned everything around" or that now they're good.

Packers fans, and frankly, the national media, aren't nervously optimistic. They are, by and large, convinced the Packers are roaring into the post season and "nobody wants to face the Packers in the playoffs."

Even while you carefully acknowledge the Packers aren't great; you still frame the packers as "very likely" to enter the playoffs, and the Lions as "the same ol Lions."

The fact of the matter is, the Lions aren't the same ol Lions. But you sure are dismissive of them vs. a Packers team with the same record that has put up about 80 less points than the Lions have, While giving up about 60 fewer points than the Lions have.

My point here is; this is the reason the Lions are beating their chest and talking about respect. Because even while you state the Packers are having their worst year in a long time, that they're mediocre at best- your foregone conclusion is to be dismissive of the Lions.

You clearly don’t know shit about my “foregone conclusion” and you’re obviously in no position to lecture me on what I think, especially when you yourself admit that I clearly said the Packers and the Lions find themselves IN EXACTLY THE SAME POSITION.

If you would like to learn what I think about Sunday’s game, allow me to tell you. I consider the game on Sunday pretty much a tossup, and I am absolutely NOT dismissing that Lion’s chances. You obviously didn’t know that - shocker! - but that’s what I think. Whatever else you might have imagined is just you pulling daydreams out of your ass.

Maybe what I actually think doesn’t fit with your desire to argue about silly nonsense.

I'm responding directly to the fact that the general tone of your original post is that the Lions are fools for believing in themselves. They could easily be losers and end their season on Sunday. While at the same time as acknowledging the Packers aren't having a great season and their record matches the Lions, the tone is they are likely headed into the playoffs, and how dare the lions be defiantly coming into Lambeau vs. the Packers.

You sure are angry. Hey, you know what? Go suck a moose.

Dingleberry thinks he's locked in on the "tone" even as he completely disregards the obvious meaning of the words. No wonder he's wrong so much.

Dude, it's not even about that, but since you brought it up.. I'm "right" more than most around here. I'm usually ahead of the trending topics around here by months, sometimes years.

Again, please, go suck a moose.

I watched all the Lions games that they are close but need one more, very good draft to fill some holes. They too tend to lose a star and the back up isnt all that good. Lots of injuries on and off for them again this year.
The one thing they got going is they have nothing to lose. They are coming in with something to prove and thats dangerous.
Next year the Lions will be a lot tougher but this year they can be beat, especially teams like the Pack that run the ball.
