Swapping Quarterbacks Brings Interesting Possibilities

The next starting QB doesn't have to be Jordan Love.

When the Los Angeles Rams, who will play in the Super Bowl on Sunday, traded a truckload of draft picks to the Lions for Matthew Stafford, they also kicked in their former starting quarterback, Jared Goff.  It is reasonable to assume that, if Green Bay does wind up trading Rodgers, their trading partner may well throw in their current signal caller as well.  It’s interesting to anticipate some of the possibilities, and to ponder if such a swap would bring a new starter under center, a back-up, or someone who would simply compete with Jordan Love for the position.

I will focus on AFC prospects, since it seems unlikely the Packers would trade their future Hall of Famer to an NFC opponent.

Let’s begin with the Tennessee Titans.  They own the 26th pick in the first round.  They could kick in Ryan Tannehill.  Tannehill’s stats are middle of the pack, but he is a battler and a competitor.  He led the Titans to a surprise number one seed in the conference, only to be outplayed by Joe Burrow in the divisional round.  Tannehill completed 67 percent of his throws for 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.  He ranked just sixteenth in passing yards, largely because he had one of the best running games in the league behind him.

Green Bay would likely have to redo his contract, as he is due $29 million in 2022. My guess is Tannehill would immediately start ahead of Jordan Love.  There are tweets out there that Aaron Rodgers is building a house in Nashville.  Hmmmm....

A trade with the Miami Dolphins would bring the 29th pick in round one, and the Fish could include Tua Tagovailoa.  The former Alabama star threw for 16 scores and had 10 interceptions last season.  He also brings a running element to the position, as he rushed for 128 yards and three more TD’s.  His rating was 90.1.  There has been much debate over whether he is good enough to lead a team to the playoffs.  In a trade to Green Bay, I believe he would compete with Jordan Love for the starting job.  He would not be the presumptive starter.  The Packers are also scheduled to play the Dolphins next season in Miami, which could affect Green Bay’s desire to do business with that team.

Dealing with the Denver Broncos could bring the 9th pick in the first round.  Denver also has two selections in the second round.  They can no longer offer Teddy Bridgewater, as he is a free agent.  They can include Drew Lock.  In six games, Lock threw for 787 yards, two touchdowns and two picks, for a rating of 80.4.  Green Bay was interested in Lock coming out of college in 2019 and brought him in for an interview.  I would project he would start off as a back-up to Love in GB.

The Pittsburgh Steelers own pick number twenty in round one.  But with the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, they would have only back-ups Mason Rudolph, Dwayne Haskins and Joshua Dobbs to supplement a trade.  Haskins is a former first round pick, but fizzled in Washington and doesn’t look like a viable option.

The Houston Texans pose an intriguing possibility.  They have the number three pick in the first round, and could unload troubled quarterback Deshaun Watson in a trade.  If Watson’s career survives the allegations against him, he would be a top notch performer who would immediately start in Green Bay.  Here again, there would be a contreact issue.  Watson's current deals calls for $35 million this year.  Not to mention, acquiring him would be a huge gamble for the Packers, who have been averse to such risks in the past.

The Cleveland Browns would likely love to bundle Baker Mayfield in a deal with Green Bay for Rodgers.  The former Heisman Trophy winner has developed a reputation as being a spirited competitor and leader, but oft injured and not quite talented enough to lead a team to a Super Bowl.  In 14 games, he threw for 17 scores, 13 picks, with a rating of 83.1.  He would compete with Love for the starting job in GB.  Cleveland has the 13th pick in the first round.

The Las Vegas Raiders have the 22nd pick.  They could add Derek Carr.  Carr would immediately start in Green Bay.  He was 4th in the league in passing yardage last season, 23 TDs, 14 picks, with a rating of 94.0.  Here again, the book on him is good player, not good enough to take you all the way.  The Raiders seem ready for a change.  I like the way Carr might fit into the Matt LaFleur offense.

The Indianapolis Colts can offer Carson Wentz, who was having a very good year in 2021 until he went flat in week eighteen, as the team was shocked by the Jaguars and knocked out of the playoffs.  The problem here is that the Colts don’t have a pick in the first round, having already dealt it to the Eagles.

Finally, if the Packers could talk Rodgers into going to the New York Jets, they might get one or both of the Jets’ first round picks, and second year signal caller Zach Wilson.  Playing on a terrible team, Wilson had 9 touchdowns throws, with 11 interceptions and a rating of 69.7.  But the rookie had his moments and showed some potential.  He would at least compete with Love for the starting job.  However, Rodgers says he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuild, and the Jets are certainly that.

If you don’t rule out the NFC, there are some thought provoking prospects there.  Jalen Hurts, Daniel Jones, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jameis Winston, Sam Darnold, Taylor Heinecke.  All play for teams that would deal for Rodgers in a heartbeat.  How about a straight up swap Rodgers for Russell Wilson?  That would be fun.

Maybe Rodgers will stay, and all this is just off-season fodder.  Stay tuned.  The next few months should be dramatic.

What's unsaid is the agreement Rodgers made with the team prior to this past season. The team already shaved a year off the contract, etc.

I still come back to Rodgers tweet just before training camp started. "One more", is all it said. Well, that 'one more' is done. Did the team agree to trade him if he wished? Unknown. I also remember what former Bronco Mark Schlereth said about a deal being done with Denver prior to training camp.

I find it interesting he's building a home near Nashville after selling his mansion in LA. However, after the media hounded him, the Titans GM said Tannehill was their QB and wouldn't be traded.

The 'beautiful mystery' continues. I still think AR will finish his career elsewhere, likely Denver. He could simply refuse a trade to a team he doesn't want to be with, like those rebuilding teams in Texas and New York, and retire.

I think most QB's would gain much in Matt LF's system. One thing is whatever QB is around next fall, I doubt there will be as much pressure to throw the ball as now and with a tandem of outstanding running backs, the team could move toward a more balanced attack. Given that, do you need a $25 million wide receiver?

If the Packers exchanges Rodgers for another established QB not on a rookie salary what is truly being saved? This would be extremely bad optics for the FO and the fan base would go crazy. It would also send a clear message Gutey screwed up with giving up a 1st round and 4th round for Jordan Love.

I believe the FO will continue to say they want Rodgers back for PR purposes, while cutting close friends (older and expensive veterans) of Rodgers on the team. This underhandedly creats leverage to force Rodgers to come to the conclusion he doesn't want to play for the rebuilding of the team which also doesn't have his best friends. An interesting theory but I certainly can see this being a strategy.

"If the Packers exchanges Rodgers for another established QB not on a rookie salary what is truly being saved? "

Absolutely: remove Tannehill, Wilson, Watson from this list. The intriguing part of Carr is that he's in the final year of his contract and has no dead hit for Vegas. They could get Vegas to eat part of his money in this kind of deal to create time to get a new contract mostly off 2022...supposedly, McDaniel has gone on record as being a Carr fan, though. Take that with a grain of salt, of course. Everyone is a fan of their QB until they're not.

The other notion is that the Packers can deal for a QB and flip them for more capital, too.

The next starting QB doesn't have to be Jordan Love. - Exactly! So Let's get rid of him. Let's just take Gutey down while were at it. He drafted him. Forget Rodgers. This is on Gute. We could of had the key to winning the playoffs. A Punt returner better then Desmond Howard. A guy that would have made this offense a juggernaut. Rodgers would have never made his trade demand. Love will get you a 3 now. And if somebody offered me a 2.for Love. I'd Jump on it. The bottom line is Love will never be a MVP QB. If that isn't enough to trade him. Your not seeing the bigger picture.

To which team would you trade Love? It's easy to say "Trade the bum!" but harder to say "Trade the bum to [insert team name here] because that team needs [insert the bum's best qualities here]."

So - put up or shut up about a trade.

"We could of had the key to winning the playoffs. A Punt returner better then Desmond Howard. A guy that would have made this offense a juggernaut."

Exactly whom would you have picked at the Packers' position in round 1 of the 2020 draft? And why?

Not even sure where to start with your comment. I'll start with, "The bottom line is Love will never be a MVP QB." MOST QBs are not going to be HOF. So what? If MLF is the coach many of us believe Love not necessarily being a HOF (Who knows, he might surprise us) is not required for his system to work. I don't know what Chrystal ball you had, but someone who is BETTER than Desmond Howard????? Who would that be?

If Rodgers is gone, then I'm sure the plan is to position themselves for another 10-15 year play-off run. So you're right, the immediate Super Bowl window would be closed. But the best way to ultimately make it is to get into the play-offs pretty much every year for the course of a decade. If the Giants have shown us anything, it's that you just have to make the play-offs, then anything can happen.

One of the two primary reasons for trading Rodgers would be to get cap relief and acquiring another team's veteran QB largely defeats that purpose. If the Packers do acquire another QB in trade, I suspect it will be one on a rookie contract and that narrows the trade list significantly (Denver, Miami, Cleveland and NYJ). Given Rodgers' desire to play for a contender, Cleveland might be an attractive choice for him.

There are a lot of big name QB's listed, though I can't get excited about very many of them. The goal is to get cap relief and most of these will not help that. Others on the list would be cheaper, though are they good enough to get to the Super Bowl? I think a trade to Denver makes sense where cap relief is gained along with draft picks and a starter or two. I could see Mariota or Minshew coming in with a full training camp. That also allows the team to keep Douglas, Campbell, Preston, Turner, and a few other free agents. Not all gloom and doom.

There isnt anything about trading with Denver that does not make sense. Multiple young talented players at positions the Packers have needs. The #9 selection in Round 1 in 2022. Eleven draft choices in 2022. Large enough cap space for Rodgers and Adam's. A surplus of talented WR's. New ownership who will want to generate excitement for the fan base. That an upcoming and improving 4th year QB on his last year of his rookie contract in Drew Lock would be available to help the Packers get thru 2022.

If a trade I just do not see a better trade partner out there. Plus, it would offer everything Rodgers would want to entice him both on and off the field.

I agree with everything except the Lock trade because in my opinion it's obvious that he is not even a decent NFL QB supported by the fact that Denver signed Bridgwater a year after giving Lock the starting QB job. I'll take my chances with Love.

If it's about bringing a bridge or competition in, Derek Carr is a more logical choice than the others. With Carr, there would be no cap hit and his contract runs out at the end of the coming season. Based on play of the two, Love and Carr, they could then decide to re-up Carr or (less likely) tag him moving forward, if they think he's the guy over Love.

I don't think Deshaun Watson would waive his no-trade clause to come to Green Bay. He seems to like the jet set destinations and it doesn't seem like his kind of place. Not enough massage parlors.

If I'm Vegas and making a pitch for ARod, I deal draft picks--especially into the future--for ARod, then flip Carr to an NFC team--Tampa or Washington or the like--to replace a portion of that draft capital in return. Carr's in his prime, handles the ball well, and isn't ridiculously expensive. There would be a market. His lack of dead money makes dealing him in the face of acquiring a higher end QB a no-brainer. Hell, if they sent Carr to the Packers, I'd consider flipping him, too.

Watson's a PR nightmare. Wherever he goes, there will be backlash.

You can forget about the the Jets, they would have to be be idiots to give us both their high #1 picks in 2022 and Zach Wilson.

TN deal could land us Tannenhill, their #1 pick, and maybe Hal Landry. At 25 years old, Landry and Gary would make a great pass rushing duo for the next 5 years.

Whether GB accepts another QB as part of a Rodgers trade would tell me they have little faith in Love's future.

I understand the intent of your piece. But Rodgers is not going to agree to a trade to a struggling team. It also makes no sense to take on a QB on a veteran contract if the desire is to lower the cap #. That narrows your list considerably.

"..... It also makes no sense to take on a QB on a veteran contract if the desire is to lower the cap #. ...."

That assumes GB is committed to Jordan Love. They have been conspiculusly quiet about what they think they have in Love. Maybe that is because AR is very sensitive and they don't want to upset him or maybe it is because they are disappointed in Love. Time will tell but if the latter, Tannenhill, Locke or Carr would be decent intermediate solutions while they search for their next franchise QB. Like most GBP fans I have lost all love for AR and think the team is better off moving on from him and the sooner the better.

I think the most likely answer is Denver.

Rodgers' cap number next year is $46M. I don't think they get all of that off their books by trading him (signing bonus), but that is good for #2 in the NFL (behind Matt Ryan). There are a lot of QBs, even veteran QBs, with a lot lower cap numbers in 2022. Derek Carr clocks in at an affordable $19M. Baker Mayfield is a shade less. Even Tannehill comes in around $8M lower than Rodgers. Don't just assume we couldn't afford a veteran QB in trade.

Oh and BTW - if the Packers keep Rodgers, take a good hard look at Matt Ryan's contract. They will be paying top dollar for an aging QB who probably can't get it done. Yeah. If you consider Mahommes to be the best remaining QB in the NFL - his cap hit ranks #7. Lots of guys getting big dollars and making big cap hits who probably can't get it done.

I wrote a comment about Matt Ryan 24 hours ago. It is a little improbable, but yeah, they might want to part with Ryan. Atlanta saves just $8M (and they have cap issues still) but a June trade pushes that to over $25M.

I don't know they'd trade Ryan to GB but he could be on the move.

All of the written options pose poor choices as commented by posters. It's time to see if Love has any ability and develops as the season progresses. The further development of Runyon, Myers, Newman, and Stokes with additional trades and draft choices could improve this team into a serious contender. However, if the Love era never takes off, there will always be an available QB in free agency that will be willing to come to a team with a good defense, O line, running attack, and maybe by then a developing good WR core. Also, of course an improved special teams unit because this is a winning organization and if we're fed up with it then certainly they know it and will finally fix it. I believe that if the roster improves as I hope we could contend even with a QB like Bridgewater in 2023 , but meanwhile there could be a bigger upside to give a young homegrown prospect a chance.

IF (and that’s a big if) the team wants to reduce the upcoming cap hit, then go for the picks and not the QB. Carr might be the only exception. I would prefer another quality player not necessarily a QB. Maybe a WR?

It would be nice to find a way to keep Rodgers by spreading out his hit into the future when the cap will probably explode.

Pat, that would probably mean more bonus money hampering our future for an aging QB. I know it's tempting because of his recent MVP season and the Brady example. However, those examples are anomalies on which I would not stake the future. NFL history is littered with teams that waited too long to free themselves of aging players.

I'm not the least bit interested in getting any other teams' quarterback that should trade for Rodgers. Imagine Tannehill and his $29K contract. He's as good as his will ever be and will never deliver a Super Bowl for us.

I want to see if Love can develop into a top notch quarterback. He has the physical skills, the youth, and potential. Give him a chance; the NFL's five time MVP winner, Peyton Manning certainly didn't light up the league in his first year as a starter.

Any draft capital we get if Rodgers does in fact leave, we can use to improve the team.

A point that is excluded with all these trade option places is that Rodgers's threat of retirement negates most of these teams, and Denver knows this and will use that to make any trade less rewarding for GB. Rodgers knows this also and if GB attempts to trade him to a team on the no side of his list, Rodgers can really stick it to GB by giving Denver an upper hand in what they won't have to give to get Rodgers or force the Packers to extend him, trade Love and do other things to soothe his whims.

I guess it depends on how the draft shakes out. I don't think they would draft one early. I think they might look at a guy who slides a little...a Malik Willis or the like, although it's sounding like teams are warming up to him and he'll be a higher pick.

I think they'll sign or trade for a low-money veteran to compete, draft a developmental guy, and keep Benkert into camp.

still believe it's Love's job. you don't trade up in the draft to jump ship prior to ever playing the guy. what they loved about him is still present. get rid of the diva, get a new linebacker or a great d lineman or receiver. let the quarterback position sort itself out.

It is very clear that author (looking at you, Ken) do not believe Jordan can play at above average level in the NFL. Hmmmm..

Let just take few facts - first forget preseason, which did not show much of Jordan Love because of his injury - jump to Chiefs game. He played by play game made for Aaron Rodgers. Do anyone think that 1st year QB is capable to read complex D placed by excellent Chiefs DC? If you do, than you should go test your intelligence. MLF, Hackett and other involved in prepearing game plan for that game just throw Jordan love to the game expecting him to emulate Aaron Rodgers. Is that good plan confirmed by any of you?

Second time we saw Jordan Love in action was second half aginst Lions in their dome. Aaron Rodgers was leading Packers to 13 points with 1st team. jordan Love lead Packers for 17 points with PS players. Who played better that game, what do you think? I say I will take QB who throw 3 INT per game and outscore oppenents with his efficiency. Rather than have "master of the game" who is not able to score more than 13 points in one half vs one of the worst team in the NFL.

So, Ken, you obviously believe that Jordan Love can not play like Aaron Rodgers. I AGREE WITH YOU. He can not, and he will never be able to play as Aaron Rodgers.

What I would like to see is how good he can play the game as Jordan Love, not AR. LIKE HIMSELF. We were not be able to see that, jet.

So, do not spit on Jordan as you were spit on AR in his very beginning with Packers. For me Aaron Rodgers is done. If he will play another year for Packers, I will not follow Packers. Maybe they win SB, but to achieve that odds are not in Packers favor. I would gladly avoid another disappointment. I would rather watch Bengals, Bills, Chargers. They are the teams of the future. When AR left Packers I will vote to be added to Packers HOF, because he played excellent up to 2016. From that moment he was just Diva making the problems with franchise I like and prefer. I'm tired of AR attitude and behaviour. Plain and simple.

So, cut those talks what will be. You know what will be? What will be, will be! "Io que será será!"

Start to analize Packers opportunities at other positions. There is news that Packers would talk with Rich Bisaccia for STC. Lets talk about that! Not any more about egoistic Diva.

Taking pretty much any veteran QB contract in return is a hard no.

Give Love a chance to prove himself. Enough already stating that he is a bust. Wow, many of you would’ve dumped Adams after his second year.

If Love is the guy, he'll win the job.

If Rodgers leaves Love is the guy. Too many have written him off when he hasn’t had a chance to prove himself.

Say the Diva moves within the NFC. So what? If you meet him in the playoffs, that’s all the better. If the Packers are done with him, then make the best deal, be that with an NFC team. That’s best for the team in the long run. The Packers survived Favre in Minnesota just fine. They’d survive 12 in New Orleans, Tampa, Philly, SF or even Minnesota.

Maybe Packer fans would prefer that the would-be game show host play in the AFC, but the AFC has a bunch of good young QBs who would bump him out of the playoffs every year. You wouldn’t be getting to a Super Bowl with him, so why pay top dollar?

Agreed. Don't care where he lands. He'll be done 3 years from now when the Packers should be competing around their young talent.

Agreed!

I'd enjoy watching the Packers play against an aging QB in Rodgers. If better trade is in NFC, so be it!

The Packers could potentially spin off a 5th round pick for Gardner Minshew--who I think would be really good in the LaF offense and is stuck behind Jalen Hurts--and not have to worry about taking on a QB in an ARod deal. This gives them a young, cheap QB with starting experience if #10 isn't ready to play.

3rd year in the league for Love with a full offseason and preseason as starting QB and he had better be ready. I would expect much improvement particularly in 2nd half of the season. He is ready!

With a veteran, cap relief would/could come by way of a contract redo, by utilizing a signing bonus and back-loading. Carr is really the only established QB I would want to see. They get Rodgers, and we get Carr, straight across.

Denver makes the most sense at this time but… here’s another scenario… AR to Jags, swap first round picks for TLawrence and let Love and Lawrence battle it out for starting spot.
