Packers Wide Receivers Did Not Live Up to Expectations in 2024

Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed scores his second touchdown against the Miami Dolphins in a Week 13 win. Reed led the Packers wide receivers with six touchdown catches in 2024.

Coming into this 2024 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers were viewed as an ascending team. They overachieved from expectations in 2023, making the NFC playoffs and winning in Dallas over the favored Cowboys.

The position group that many fans were excited about was the wide receiving corps. Including the tight ends, the Packers had six pass catchers on rookie contracts, all players drafted in 2022 or 2023. The upside even brought back memories of the group that helped bring the last Lombardi trophy to Green Bay.

In the 2024 NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the wide receivers were held to a combined 9 receptions for 114 yards. Injuries were partly to blame as both Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed were both knocked out of the game in the third quarter and Christian Watson missed the game because of a torn ACL in week 18.

However, the performance in the playoffs represented the disappointment from the group in 2024. In fact, in the Packers’ last four games, they only had two touchdown passes, those being to Dontayvion Wicks against New Orleans and to Malik Heath against Minnesota.

Prior to the season, many, myself included, compared this group to the one with Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, James Jones, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. With the numbers from this year’s group being much better in 2023.

Of the group of Reed, Kraft, Watson, Doubs and Wicks, just Kraft and Watson had more receiving yards in 2024 than they did in 2023. Kraft and Wicks were the only ones with more receiving touchdowns this year compared to last year.

The biggest difference in the receiving group from this year to year’s past is the lack of a top target. In 2009, Aaron Rodgers’ second season he had two 1,000 yard receivers in Jennings (1,113 yards) and Driver (1,061 yards). Jones (440 yards) and Nelson (320 yards) weren’t counted on as much as complimentary players that year.

In 2010, Jennings became the clear go-to guy throughout the year after the injury to Jermichael Finley and decline from age to Driver. Jennings has 76 catches for 1,265 yards and 12 touchdowns. Jones (679 yards), Nelson (582 yards) and Driver (565 yards) were the complimentary pieces around Jennings.

Compare that to this season where Dontayvion Wicks led the team in targets with 76, but was fifth in yards. Christian Watson, maybe the most irreplaceable of the wide receivers, was lowest among the top four in touchdowns with just two.

Jayden Reed led the team in 100 yard receiving games with three, but two of them came in Weeks 1 and 4 and he failed to top 50 yards in 8 of the last 9 games.

Going forward into 2025, is there a need for Driver-like veteran on the team? A former Packers great who plays in New York could fit that bill if the team looks into a trade. Is there a trade or signing for wide receiver in his prime? Or will Brian Gutenkust finally draft a wide receiver in the first round?

In order to take the next step, it’s likely the wide receiver room will need a few more upgrades going into 2025.

There's a lot of holes to fill. Gute has some money to spend, I hope it's a good offseason and draft. An improved pass rush is my #1 priority, Then obviously a CB or two and I agree we need a #1 receiver. Watson likely won't return at least until December, if ever, and no guarantee he won't have lost half a step from the injury. Biggest plus would be for Love to play better.

It's not holes. It's upgrades.
The cornerbacks had injuries.
Morrison hip- remember TD Jesus
So IMO- Gute will Pivot and take a
pass rusher to replace Preston Smith.
Then dump Cox, Mosby etc.

The holes at WR are due to the guy who Packer fans are now hoping will make it all better.

After 7 years as GM, Gutey's best WR draft pick is who? MVS? Maybe Reed?

And he refuses to add free agents at WR other than the over the hill Sammy Watkins and never was Devin Funchess.

Oh, and the FOUR 1st round picks on the Defensive Line can't generate any pass rush and the TWO 1st round picks at CB are likely walking after failing to produce, so yeah Gutey has a lot of holes of his own making to fill.

He will be out most, if not all of 2025. ACL with additional damage. If LaFleur doesn't use more play-action with Love, set the play faster and get the TEs involved in a more proactive way, we will see another episode of Groundhog's Day.
Whiff watch will now include Musgrave, Van Ness and Walker.

I think that maybe before we go shopping or worry about how WR fits into the draft packing order, we (or better yet MLF) should figure out how to tailor a passing game that fits Jordan Love. Adjustments in designs and play-calling need to be made, as well as a thorough analysis of how our current guys can improve as far as getting separation against various coverages and hanging on to the ball. There is also the matter of improving Love's accuracy on certain throws. The injuries to Watson and Doubs have added a whole new element to this-off-season.

Having said that, any one of the following three would be helpful via whatever avenue: 1) a crafty veteran with good hands who can get open and move the chains, 2) a reasonably-priced field-stretcher who isn't coming off a serious injury, or 3) a smaller/shifty WR who can turn a short passes into first downs and potentially bigger gains--someone who is always helpful to a QB in sustaining drives.

Remember it took Jennings, Nelson, and Adams a few seasons to blossom. Tweak, the O line, use a change of pace RB like Loyd and the offense should hum.

Rodgers was a stickler for detail and during his Prime he demanded a lot from his receivers. There were several who rose to the occasion and they ran crisp routes, understood his hand signals and in return he would throw a perfect ball. Rodgers was more driven and expected more from himself and his receivers.
Love seems less perfectionistic but I worry he is too relaxed and not correcting his mechanics/footwork. I think his accuracy would improve.
Rodgers spent every offseason perfecting a new detail. I remember him talking about perfecting his hitch.-lol.
He also had some very intense and crazy work-outs in offseason. I think he would run on a treadmill and throw at different speeds.

Rodgers threw off his back foot more and more as the years went on, especially after the second shoulder injury. And just what kind of perfectionist training regimen was appearing on Jeopardy etc. At the end, he looked more checked out than committed to his craft.

Watson has had three seasons of injuries, dropped passes and fans waiting for another Jordy to appear. Hopefully Gutt doesn't make it worse by extending his contract. Give it up the guy is too fragile for pro game.
Reed was drafted because Gutt thought kick returner and small fast receiver too wow!
Draft analyst thought he was drafted way too high due to poor college stats. Reed came with issues, lack of toughness, bad hands, going missing for periods of time.

Dobbs is okay. Kraft and Muskrat are okay.
Wicks not sure attitude issues.
All in all this crew ain't wowing anyone. Pack fans highly over.rated these guys to begin with. Real truth they are avg route runners, hands, and injury prone. Can't believe how oft one of them misses games.

Yep, free agency is another avenue to explore, especially considering that the Packers could be immediate contenders with an experienced top-tier WR. Look what happened when Gute brought in top quality players at RB and safety.

For the cost of one top-tier WR in FA, we could add a couple of solid, veteran offensive linemen. I think it's more likely that the Packers will do what they've done for a while which is draft a really good WR on the second day.

Packers history indicates that they'll go for a CB or a pass rusher in the first round if possible. Also, Gutekunst has proven he can get extra draft picks by trading away vets.

The only veteran O-lineman I can remember the Packers bringing in as a starter was Billy Turner. I don't expect that to happen this year, considering that their returning O-linemen are all at least decent, so it would cost a lot of money for a significant upgrade. You are probably right that they will pick a defensive player in the first round, but if the value is good for a WR they could get a player with a bigger impact. Our expensive young QB needs a reliable target.

It's fun to think about drafting a receiver in the 1st round, but is there still a 1st round receiver left when the Packers have to pick?

I think the receivers we have now are going to work as well as anyone the Packers could draft or get on the market unless they go the high dollar rout. Most important to the passing game is establishing the running game and protecting Love. To do that they need to have a championship O-line. You wouldn't believe how that would turn negatives into positives. A game manager into All-Pro. Most here think they have a serviceable O-line, but what has happened in the big games against stout Ds? Actually amazing that the O has worked as well as it has. Probably only from extra special effort by the backs and Ds having to honor them.

Fix/improve the O&D-lines and their depth. THEN (and only then) worry about the fun pieces.

They DID establish the running game (5th most rushing yards in the league), and they protected the QB well (second fewest sacks in the league). Lack of a top-tier WR was a killer. It's not just a "fun piece."

You may be right. I haven't studied the draft yet. There is a long way to go before it happens though. Prospects will rise and fall in the rankings. The NFL combine may change things. Trading up or down may be possible. I just think a first round WR is worth considering. And I don't remember the last time I thought it was.

It is a passing League, now. There are plenty of skilled WRs in this draft. It is not 1995 any longer. When Kupp and Nacua returned to the lineup, the Rams season took off. The selection doesn't have to be in Rd One, but this guy has to bag a couple wides more btw rounds two-four. They cannot be complacent and satisfied with guys like Wicks, or Melton. If Doubs is facing serious issues with concussions, he may have to leave the game, then there will be a sense of urgency in Cheeseland.

They will be eliminated if they do not pass to Win. Lamar Jackson came in #5 in the ranking of NFL passers with close to 4,200 yards. Barkley may have more yards receiving on wheel routes and screens than running it on Sunday if they key to stop the run.

I think this year was a perfect storm for the passing game. The high expectations from the previous year were blown up by injuries.
The QB gets injured in the first game.
When he finally gets back and starts rounding into shape, the WRs keep getting injured.
Musgrave misses most of the year.
The third-round RB (who is a dynamic receiver) misses the entire year.
The first-round OL misses most of the year.

Now we face losing Watson (ACL), Doubs (multiple concussions), and Reed (shoulder separation)--our three starting WRs--for ALL of next year.
Exacerbating it all, the past two years were deep WR draft pools, but this year's looks pretty crappy. I suspect that if Gute knew how our WRs were going to all get injured, he would have taken one last draft, but last April we all had high hopes for our WRs.

This draft looks decent for getting A CB and DL with the first and second picks.
I'd rather get a great IOL and WR, but last year's pool was MUCH better than this year's.

Reed doesn't need surgery. But otherwise not a bad assessment. I still like that our entire receiver room cost the team $11M total. I think youth is key on the perimeter and that there are quality guys waiting in later rounds. I'd be shocked if the Packers are in for a Tee Higgins. I want Gute to find the next Puka Nakua, the next late round guy to break out.

Invest in the lines. Get an edge and a corner.

I’ve been having a back and forwards with a colleague at work who’s also a Packers fan. He insists guys are wide open and Love is just missing them. I’m very much of the opposite opinion. While accepting Love wasn’t perfect and had his struggles I very rarely see ‘easy’ targets or guys ‘wide open’ - certainly not to the same extent as the tail-end of last season. Everything achieved is a complete struggle and appears overly complex. I watch other teams making plays and getting completions with a minimum of fuss. Who’s right?

Start with the OL. Forget non coverage sacks. Love is actually pretty good at evading them, but look at how our pocket is pushed inwards and backwards consistently. If you want any QB to improve, give him more stable pockets and give him the confidence not to expect to need to be in motion.

Since taking over as GM in 2018 Gutey has drafted 13 receivers and tight ends. Let's review the list and you can all see how they panned out.
2018- J'Mon Moore 4th rd.
Marquez Valdes Scantling 5th rd.
EQ St. Brown 6th rd.
2019 Jace Sternberger 3rd rd.
2021- Amari Rodgers 3rd rd
2022- Christian Watson 3rd rd
Romeo Doubs 4th rd.
Samari Toure 7th rd.
2023. Luke Musgrave 2nd rd
Jayden Reed 2nd rd
Tucker Kraft 3rd d
Dontayvion Wicks 5th rd
Grant DuBose 7th rd.

It's also worth recalling who Gutey passed on in those same drafts.
In 2018 he used a second round pick on bust cb Josh Jackson; while Christian Kirk, James Washington and te Dallas Goedert were on the board for Green Bay.
In 2019 the second of two first round picks was used for Darnell Savage and a third rounder for the Jace Sternberger. The Packers could have taken Deebo Samuel, DK Metcalf, Dionte Johnson or Terry McLaurin instead with those picks.
Another bust Amari Rodgers went in the third round in 2021 while Amon Ra St. Brown and Nico Collins were on the board.
And while we now anticipate Christian Watson being doubtful for most or all of next season, after missing a bunch of time these past two seasons with injuries alternatives to that 2022 third round pick were George Pickens, John Metchie III, Alex Pierce and WanDale Robinson.
When Gutey used his No. 1 on Van Ness in 2023 Jacon Smith Nijiba was there instead not to mention Jordan Addison, Quentin Johnson, the Dalton Kincaid, Say Flowers.
This past year the Packers took a pass on Xavier Worthy, Ladd McConkey. Ricky Pearsall.

And we wonder why so many misses or continuing questions prevail around the Packers receiver corps.
