Packers Vs. Buccaneers: First Impressions

My immediate thoughts during the Packers - Buccaneers game without the benefit of a re-watch.

...

The playoffs start today for the Green Bay Packers.

Buccaneers just come right out and march down the field. That's... not an ideal start for a team fighting to stay relevant.

Don't look now, but Jamaal Williams could very well be on pace for a 100-yard day.

It feels odd to say this, but Greg Jennings actually said something smart: Now that the game is missing a line judge, teams may be able to get away with some holding calls in the trenches.

Kyler Fackrell leads the team in special teams snaps, and now you see why.

Kenny Clark with a sack, Kyler Fackrell with a blocked punt(?) and now Dean Lowry with a touchdown. Packers' 2016 draft class reaping their benefits today.

A screen isn't going to get by Blake Martinez in the open field.

Almost looks like Brett Hundley pre-determines when he's going to run in the middle of his drop-backs. Doesn't even seem like he bothers going through his progressions.

Not sure why Mike McCarthy would come out in the second half with three straight passes when Jamaal Williams is having the kind of game he is.

Clay Matthews now has 2.5 sacks today, his most in a game since week 16 of the 2014 season against... The Buccaneers.

Packers' run defense just casually falling apart in the second half. Downside of your offense not being able to do much.

This game feels like we've somehow hopped in the DeLorean and went back to the 80s.

Screen plays are the bane of this defense's existence. My lord.

Oh, overtime. This should be fun. By the way, Trevor Davis' punt return before the Packers' last possession was one of the worst I've ever seen.

Aaron Jones misses most of the last three games with an MCL sprain, comes back and scores the game-winning touchdown in overtime on his first carry. That's just fantastic.

The Packers are still alive.

1. Return of the pass rush
2. Effective run game
3. Final score

OK the ground game won the game today in a thrilling matchup that the Packers should have won easily. Again, Hundley did not play particularly well at Lambeau but he made some plays with his legs when it counted.

Game winning TD drive in OT was nice to watch. We just basically blew the Bucs off the ball and the final TD run by Jones was terrific. It's looking we may have finally found a consistent ground game.

Of course the defense still allowed nearly 400 yards of offense but they also made some big plays with Lowry's being the biggest.

It wasn't pretty or dominating but it's a win and I'll take it. On to Cleveland. Thanks, Since '61

Coldworld - I am aware of that. But the reason they were on the field so much is because they rarely get a 3 and out. To get off the field the defense needs to make stops before the opponent scores. Thanks, Since '61

Williams has really shown something the last few weeks running ball. Early in the season he was running up his linemen's rear ends. Now he's making his cuts and running hard. I'm glad he's coming around because he's tough between the tackles.

Took McCarthy until OT to just run the ball. Better late than never but really, what a dope! To muster 35 plays before starting the last drive to tie the game is really horrible. I'm so tired of that stupid look on his face every week. BUT...It was a nice call to bring in Jones and fresh legs. At least he had one moment.

The Packers were very lucky today but better lucky than not.

A very lucky win against a very bad team. True it’s better than the result versus the Ravens, but hardly a shining endorsement of anyone on offense not playing running back. Of course mostly because they never got the ball.

Being alive is just an hallucination. A figment of your imagination. AR can throw the ball but can't afford to take a hit. He shouldn't play again this year and no way Hundley can orchestrate wins against Carolina and Minnesota. Enjoy the win. But don't go off the deep end.

After a Packers win I am keeping everything positive!

I love the Williams/Jones 1-2 punch. I really hope we can see more of it moving forward. Even when Rodgers comes back. Williams just keeps improving each and every week. He is a hard nosed Runner. Jones brings the cutting and speed. Love that tandem!

Mathews showed up big time today.

As did Dean Lowry. There isn't much better then watching one of the big uglies running a long ways for a TD. And then absolutely nailing the Lambeau Leap.

Trevor Davis had his best game as a returner! I thought he was going to take one to the house.

No matter what happens moving forward this win at least keeps hopes alive for Rodgers to return this season.

A lot of concern with Lacy and Starks gone at RB even with Lacy's weight issue (he still produced) and prior to last year Stark's was very reliable, a good combo. Now it looks like Ted has hit on 2 solid young RB's, Wiliam's is as steady as they come in all phases of the game as a rookie and Jones is "special" you can't teach his instincts and immediate reactions with the ball in his hands. In addition they have 2 solid FB's. I don't know how many games an NFL team can win with a QB rating of 48, Hundley has been up and down like a yo-yo, every home game he has been awful, being at the game you see the receivers open, he has really poor anticipation, that is where the boo's come from. The other positive other than defending screens was the intensity the defense played with all game even with the amount of time they had to be on the field.

I believe Williams missed a year of football prior to being drafted, so when the next reps you get after playing at BYU are in the NFL you are bound to have some growing pains. But what we are seeing now was what I envisioned when we drafted him.

Screen plays work well when you have your outside linebackers provide the pass rush. They get caught inside and the D-backs get run off. Nice to see Williams run with authority. Too many penalties again and the always predictable offensive play-calling.

Hundley is the poorest excuse for a QB. I felt bad for him after a few games but he just seems to always taking 3 steps back after taking 1 fwd. He does NOT have it and MM should be almost fired for having him as our backup. He should be fired for letting the D get this bad.

Even still it is a win. And it doesn't look like we will have to draft any RBs this year. Williams is looking real solid.

If AR comes back and we make the playoffs (still very much in doubt), if the D can get healthy, it will be back to 'any given Sunday' hoping.

Positives we have a good RB duo. They get game ball! Pass rush was good. But let’s keep it in perspective- TB is awful as is Hundley. Pack lucky to win today but we are still on life support. As far as people getting on Jordy saying he should be traded. Get a life. He was leading the league in TDS when AR got hurt Obviously it’s Hundley not Jordy.

Hundley has two wins, and almost a third in Pittsburgh. He’ll probably have three wins after next week. So, he’ll be 3-4 (not counting Minnesota game). His losses are to New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Baltimore, all good teams.

Any coach would be happy with these results from an unproven backup.

This is probably factually true. A coach might not be happy with the style points/development of Hundley, but he'd probably take 3 wins versus 4 losses from a back up QB who has hardly played a meaningful NFL regular season snap all day long.

Guessing Indy, Houston, Chicago would. Several more teams would take 3 wins, 4 losses from their starter.

Hundley is a very bad quarterback. May be worst in the league. When the Fox after show makes fun of you you know there’s a problem at qb. Overall big plays saved Green Bay. I don’t think Nelson likes being out their with Hundley. His body language says it all. He gets open it’s an interception, he gets open again and it’s an overthrow. Lucky we can run the ball or we would have been slaughtered.

As I said before I was going to happen after the Steeler game was that they were going to double coverage Davante Adams thereby that's all Hundley looks for is Davante Adams Davante Adams Davante Adams with no passes to Randall Cobb no hook up with Jordy Nelson couple passes to one or two tight ends and all his piss ant passes were short little dinnky passes for a whopping total of 84 yards. What a monster !!!!

Guts win by the Packers today. Bad offense play calling or bad offensive OC adjustments in second half let the Packer defense, especially the Packers battered secondary exposed. Tampa made their living in the short soft middle with Burnett playing two deep. (See were Clinton-Dix had his best game of the year. Not an accident. ) Tampa was playing run to pass. Packers were playing both on defense and offense pass to run for most of the game. Tampa took advantage of it. That's on MM and Dom, they gambled, and almost lost. Not till the last 4:00 minutes did both switch to run offense, run defense and shut down Tampa Bay. NFL is a pass first league, so I understand their bias. The NFL is a week to week league. Win at Cleveland and QB1 returns with a chance to get into the play offs, Any win in the NFL is a good win. Style points don't count. Bring on the Browns.

This was like watching one of those Bay of Pigs games from the 70s and 80s. Two bad teams, awful defenses, crap QBs, "genius" coaches who love deep throws, nobody held accountable for all the stupid stuff they do out there, etc. etc. I thought that I was watching the Packers play themselves in a mirror. I mean, Koetter even called a stupid time out when GB had the ball at the end of the game. It was like he was channeling Mashed Potato Mike for God's sake.

The commenters above who say that Hundley is the worst QB in the NFL are dead wrong. Jameis Winston is worse by far. I don't care what the stat line shows, the dumbass throws a pass 5 yds. beyond the line of scrimmage when he could have run and made it to the one yd. line, maybe a TD. Even TT would've recognized this guy isn't NFL-caliber talent.

Tampa's O line can't pass pro to save their lives. Winston is getting the crap beat out him, understand why he has no confidence in the packet. (edit: pocket) That's why they were running bubble screens and stretch plays. Their number one RB a beast. I run it too to save Winston.

Hundley has beat the Bears and Tampa not very convincing wins at that. He is not a quality back up IMO. We shall see how it develops.

He had a 48.3 QB rating against a bad TB team on his home turf in good weather conditions. That’s not getting the job done.

First impression, yay!
Second impression, I sure hope this doesn't help Capers keep his job.
Third, even with a pass rush, this defense couldn't get off the field and gave up a bunch of yards.

Dean Lowry running in the open field for a TD left an impression! Baffled at pass play calling. Hundley can't seem to hit wide open receivers. Good to see Matthews us back from the State Farm commercials film set. Vogel punting well (although he gets a LOT of practice). Defense simply cannot stop anyone.

I think we can all agree, the run blocking of the offensive line (and TE) has been getting better since Rodgers injury. For years, we were a mediocre run blocking o-line but I think since the focus has been there of late, (by neccessity) it has gotten much better. Also, for all the heat Spriggs has taken, his run blocking seems to be really more than decent. Counted like 4 instances where he moved the Edge setter long enough for a solid stretch play. He is also improving in Pass pro. Spriggs and Fackrell making plays this year is something I NEVER saw coming.

It took MM until OT to figure out how to use Hundley. If he can't hit water when falling out of a boat, (passing) let him run.

Hundley's performance reminded me of an ole knock, knock joke from the schoolyard that came to me. It went something like this... Knock, knock, whose there? UCLA, UCLA who? UCLA when the smog clears... and the smog still hasn't cleared for this young man. Must be that gum he's gnawin on, seems to be chewing on that thing a mile a minute. Dustin a stir up in his head seems to me.

Watched New Orleans game and the announcers were talking about how excited the Saints are about Taysom Hill. They even think he's the eventual replacement for Brees. A Saint coach told them that their next QB "is already in the house." Is there anyone in GB who didn't want us to keep Hill? Big big mistake. Hundley is awful but even if he was good I'd want him gone. That cud chewing got tired a long time ago. How is it no one has told him how stupid he looks?

The Saints are so excited about Hill's future as a QB that they have him on the punt return team. They're really protecting their next QB.

So you're saying that after six games looking like the worst QB in football you'd still rather have Hundley.

No, he's disputing that Hill will be Brees's replacement. I don't buy it for a second, either.

I don't think that the Packers' record would be meaningfully different with HIll under center. They might be meaningfully more entertaining to watch, but I had no faith in Hill's ability to run the offense or play from the pocket. It's immaterial: if Hill were on the roster, he wouldn't be the #2, and he wouldn't have gotten enough meaningful practice snaps since TC to be good for anything.

All the kool-aid drinking Taysom Hill nut job fans need to let it go...

Hill looked FAR superior to Hundley in the preseason. Far more decisive, and able to move the team.

I'd like to think they would have had 1-2 more wins with Hill, but truth be told, with our defense it's probable nothing would be much better. Even if we scored 6 more points per game, the opponent would just match it, with our inability to stop them.

We aren't going anywhere in the playoffs even if we do somehow get there with Rodgers - because of our awful, awful defense.

Once again, observations regarding preseason comparisons between Hill and Hundley are not the point. The original post spoke to the announcers parroting the Saints spin that Hill could be Brees's eventual replacement. No one believes that. The spin is negated by the Saints playing Hill on their punt return team.

Try to keep up.

Is it just me or do the Falcons hold our key of sniffing the playoffs even if we run the table?

My takeaways....
This defense is SO bad, there's literally just 3 players I'd keep on that side of the ball, jettison ALL the rest, and never look back.
Clark, Daniels and Martinez are keepers.
King - maybe. Jury's still out because he's injured so much, but it isn't looking too good.

The rest - back up the truck, load it up, and ship them all to the Bears or Lions.
