Packers vs. Bears: Quick Takes from Green Bay's 38-17 Win

Quick takes from the Packers' 38-17 win over the Bears in Week 4.

Aaron Rodgers relaxed the offense with four touchdown passes and the defense delivered two second half takeaways as the Green Bay Packers (2-2) rattled off 24 unanswered points to steamroll the Chicago Bears (2-2) by the final score of 38-17 Sunday afternoon at a sun-soaked Soldier Field.

It was over when…

…Rodgers hit a wide open Randall Cobb on the first play of the fourth quarter for his fourth and final touchdown pass. The score came four plays after a Jay Cutler interception, and it gave the Packers a commanding 21-point lead, which would hold over the final 15 minutes.

Game Balls

  • Aaron Rodgers: Add just a little doubt to the Rodgers' equation and you get these kind of mind-bending results. Well-protected all day, Rodgers shredded the Bears' banged-up secondary, completing 22 of 28 passes for 302 yards and four scores. His 151.2 passer rating was the second highest of his NFL career. Note to self: don't pick against this guy when his back is even close to the wall.
  • Tramon Williams: One of the truly underrated storylines of this season has been the play of Williams, who again delivered a game-changing play Sunday. His break on Cutler's ill-advised slant attempt resulted in an interception that fully tipped the game Green Bay's way. His pick back in Week 2 was also a turning point. He also nearly intercepted Cutler later in the contest. What a revival we're seeing.
  • Tim Masthay: He perfectly held five extra points but was otherwise not needed. Zero punts. That's a great day at the office for a punter.

Stat of the Game

6 of 10: Cutler's two interceptions in the second half gave the Bears quarterback six games with at least two picks over just 10 regular-season starts against the Packers. The Bears are 1-9 in those games, and Cutler has thrown 19 interceptions.

Other Notes

-- Bend but don't break is too kind a metaphor for the Packers defense Sunday. Call it the slinky defense. Stretched to its very limits but held on. The Bears ran 77 plays, ran up 33 first downs and had 496 yards, including 235 on the ground (most from Chicago since 1988). Yet the Packers allowed only 17 points, including zero in the second half. That's almost hard to fathom. Takeaways are a godsend.

-- Rodgers will get the headlines, but the offensive line deserves huge praise. While Jared Allen didn't play, Lamarr Houston and Willie Young are certainly no scrubs as pass-rushers. David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga effectively eliminated the two from the game. Rodgers took one sack (when he was raced out of bounds on a scramble) and was dealt with zero quarterback hits (although he was hit on the miracle touchdown heave that was called back). Context: He took nine sacks and was hit 19 times the first three weeks.

-- Rodgers completed 22 passes Sunday, and 17 went to either Jordy Nelson or Randall Cobb. The two combined for 221 yards and four scores. Boom or bust with these two? In wins over the Bears and Jets, Nelson and Cobb have 31 catches for 469 and seven touchdowns. In the two losses, the numbers drop to 23 for 229 and one score. Until another target truly establishes themselves, production from Nelson and Cobb will remain pivotal.

-- How sharp was the offense? Well, the Packers received only seven possessions. The results were touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, field goal, touchdown, touchdown, blocked field goal. The finger tips of Young prevented a perfect day and 41 points on the road. The Packers ran just 47 plays—four fewer than last week in Detroit—but averaged 7.6 yards per play. Scoring 38 points over just 23:38 of possession is impressive.

-- The Packers avoided the dreaded 1-3 start. Now comes a short week, with Teddy Bridgewater and the Minnesota Vikings (2-2) making the short trip to Green Bay for Thursday Night Football (which needs to be abandoned immediately, by the way). Can't lose home divisional games. Especially against rookie quarterbacks. All things considered, a 3-2 start would be just fine.

Hilarious Game Ball to the Punter for not punting.

FYI the Minnesota Vikings are 1-2, and they just lost their lead.

Huge difference in our pass block and run block, there's a strong correlation to running out of shotgun. It's hard to blame Lacy for this, it sucks to see him beat himself up but it's easy for linebackers to diagnose when there eyes are in the backfield to a running back with no running start.

Not sure if better route running today or ARodg making appropriate audibles and seeing the field better.

Run D sucks.

Improvements are needed in the ground game on both sides of the ball, but that was a big win, and we needed it.

HHCD already looks better than Burnett. It's been four games and I have to convince myself Burnett has actually been on the field.

Agreed on Burnett. Hyde has been no better, perhaps worse. I have to think getting Clinton-Dix on the field more often is going to be in the plans moving forward.

I thought Burnett played a lot better then Hyde. I saw Hyde missing tackles and Burnett was very physical. I personally would start Clinton-Dix over Hyde.

Clinton-Dix can really come up fast from the safety position. I want to see him start.

So much to love about this game,so little to dislike.

+ Jordy in the slot (again.....finally)
+Cobb vs a Safety
+Rodgers targeting other receivers early and often
+Rodgers throwing **QUICK** checkdowns
+Pass block
? +I think I seen a bunch formation
+I know I See Lacy flanked outside (I knew the coaches read these blogs! I called it!) They didn't put Cobb in the backfield, but that play Cobb caught a pass for a huge gain. That formation forces defense to play zone

-Let's give Lacy most of his carries while Rodgers is under center and Lacy is able to get some steam rolling.
-Run blocking still hasn't clicked
-MM still isn't featuring our other RBs (strategy?)

DEFENSE
+The WR coverage was pretty good overall
+Turnovers
That's it?
+AJ Hawk was attacking!
+I can't wait to see HHCD totally comfortable in Dom's system
+Lattimore never seems to get run over and he attacks (no more Jones?)

-Horrible Run Defense
-Where was the pressure when not blitzing?
-Peppers? Daniels? Neal? Perry? Boyd?
-Hyde...Hyde...Hyde. Anything positive these 4 weeks?
-Burnett ; does he get trucked at least once a game?

(What would S.Richardson and HHCD look like?)

Hawk was awesome today, tackling in the open field.

Lattimore was good too.

If either of those guys were truly awesome, the Bares wouldn't have run for 235. TT needs to get a couple ILB's.

Pretty much agree. Hyde was up and down. Martellus Bennett is big.

Yea,Bennett is a big TE,but a few of those passes were just thrown up there or backshoulder.

I wonder if that last pass to Bennett was an interception by Hyde?

I loved seeing Rodgers involving the TE's early. I loved seeing what R.Rodgers could do with the ball in his hands. I would like to see him look that way more often.
I think moving forward throwing the TE's early might be what Rodgers needs to get into a groove. Favre used to be this way. Start out a game with some easy passes to get comfortable.

I also loved seeing the RB's running out into pass patterns, or out for dump off passes. Even if Rodgers didn't throw that way, it brought a LB or safety over to cover him, which opened up lanes downfield.

So do I. That happens with good/great pass protection.

I can't wait 'til Rodgers actually connects with Lacy on a swing pass and he gets some speed going up against a Corner or Safety. Night-Night.

I can't help but think about what Richardson would have done in that situation while HHCD was holding Bennett back.

I don't think Hyde even touched Bennett. Well,he might have 2-hand touched him.

Richardson would have cleaned up.

Hyde **might** be the better option at man-coverage right now,but I'd like to see some hard hitting coming from the secondary. Burnett nor Hyde can offer that.
