Packers Snap Counts V. The Lions: Week 12

That's why they play the games!

The Packers made a flurry of transactions this week.  They released Dallin Leavitt and poached Patrick Taylor off the Patriots' practice squad.  They released LB Christian Young from the practice squad and signed RB James Robinson to the PS.  The Packers placed Emmanuel Wilson and Luke Musgrave on injured reserve and then signed Robinson and WR Bo Melton to the 53-man roster.  The Packers elevated S Benny Sapp (2nd elevation) and FB Henry Pearson from the practice squad.

The injured inactive players were Aaron Jones (Knee), WR Wicks (concussion/knee), ILB Campbell (Neck), CB Alexander (Shoulder), Deguara (hip), and Rudy Ford (biceps).  Caleb Jones was a heathy scratch.  QB Sean Clifford and RB James Robinson were active but did not play.

Player Snaps % STs
Myers 56 100 5-22%
Jenkins 56 100
Tom 56 100
Runyan 43 77 5-22%
Walker 29 52 5-22%
Nijman 27 48 5-22%
Rhyan 13 23
Newman     5-22%

The Packers were not able to run the ball particularly effectively.  However, in the first half, the running backs gained 40 yards on 10 carries, with Reed and Love adding 18 more yards on 3 carries.  They ended up with 58 yards on 13 carries, a 4.5-yard average, with chunk plays of 17 from Dillon and 15 from Reed.  The running backs finished the game with 54 yards on 17 carries (3.17-yards per carry).  The Packers gained 14 yards on 7 carries in the second half.  For the game, the Packers gained 109 yards on 22 carries (a 4.95-yard average) buoyed by Love's 37-yard scramble to help seal the game.  The line is almost embarrassing in short- yardage situations.

The pass protection was good, overall.  The line allowed just 4 quarterback hits and no sacks.  Love only ran 3 times and often had ample time to throw the ball.  I thought Zach Tom had a few rough snaps but the ball came out fast or otherwise his loss of the rep was not a factor in the play.

Player Snaps % STs
Dillon 29 52 1-4%
Taylor 27 48 14-61%

Dillon gained 43 yards on 14 carries (3.1-yard average) with a long of 17.  He addded 3 receptions on 3 targets for 38 yards, including a 22-yarder during which he showed some athleticism by hurdling a defenser.  Taylor gained 11 yards on 3 carries for a 3.7-yard average.  Taylor also caught a 4-yard pass.  Both backs did a good job in pass protection.  It might be surprising that Dillon did not play the vast majority of the snaps, but I think it just shows that team is quite confident that Taylor can play in the NFL.

Player Snaps % STs
Kraft 54 96 13-57%
Sims 14 25 9-39%
Pearson 2 4 11-48%

Kraft caught both of his targets for 15 yards and a touchdown.  Sims had no receptions on 1 target.  Pearson had no statistics.  The heavy work load for Kraft was not unexpected.  The Packers played 1.25 TEs on average per play.  There were a number of 2 tight end sets.

Player Snaps % STs
Love 56 100
Clifford DNP

Love had a fine day.  He completed 22 or 32 passes for 268 yards (8.375-yards/attempt) with 3 TDs and 0 interceptions, good for a 125.5 passer rating.  I did not see any turnover-worthy throws, though there were 2 passes that looked a little odd.  Love was accurate and made several throws into tight windows, including an across-the-grain throw to Malik Heath.  It might be a trifle too early, but the thought of an extension prior to the start of the 2024 season is no longer out of the question.  Love added 39 yards on 3 carries.

Player Snaps % STs
Watson 49 88
Doubs 48 86 1-4%
Reed 41 73 3-13%
Heath 11 20 7-30%
Toure 3 5
Melton 2 4 6-26%

Christian Watson caught 5 of 7 targets for 94 yards (18.8 yards/rec) and a TD with a long of 53.  Love under-threw him a little on the 53-yard bomb and overthrew an open Watson on another bomb.  Watson also hauled in a little out pattern for a first down to move the chains.  Watson reminded fans why the coaching staff is giving him every opportunity to be the #1 WR.  Malik Heath caught all four of his targets for 46 yards, including a couple good for first downs, and he blocked ferociously.  Heath belongs on an NFL 53-man roster.  Doubs caught 3 of 4 targets for 37 yards.  He dropped a big 3rd down target that would have been good for a first down and would have helped seal the game.  [Not all drops are created equal.]  Reed caught 4 of 8 targets for for 34 yards and a touchdown while adding 16 yards on 3 carries.  Toure and Melton had no statistics.

Pro Football Focus provided a the routes run information in this article.  Watson ran 30 routes, Doubs 29 and Reed 26.  Watson's 3.13 yards per route ran is elite.  Doubs (1.28 yards/route) and Reed (1.31 yards/route run) are nothing to write home about.  Heath ran just 5 routes but saw 4 targets for 46 yards (11.5 yards/route).  Toure ran 2 and Melton 1 but neither saw a target.  Kraft ran a whopping 29 routes but saw just 2 targets and gained 15 yards.  Sims ran 4 routes and had 1 target.  Dillon ran 9 routes (3 targets) and Patrick Taylor 16 routes.  (1 target).

Player Snaps % STs
Clark 64 76
Slaton 51 61 7-30%
Wyatt 39 46 1-4%
Brooks 30 36 4-17%
Wooden 22 26 2-9%

The first thing to note is that Detroit ran 84 offensive plays to 56 for the Packers, and that they gained 468 yards of total offense.  The Lions converted 7 of 15 third-down opportunities but just 1 of 5 fourth-down attempts.  The defense played the big downs well while also forcing 3 huge fumbles.

Clark played a whopping 64 snaps.  He had just 2 assisted tackles, but he was a force on the field with 2 QB hits and multiple pressures, some of which set up big plays for other defenders.  Slaton had 2 tackles (1 solo).  Wyatt had 1 solo tackle and a QB hit.  Karl Brooks had 2 tackles (1 solo), a QB hit, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  Wooden had no statistics.  The Packers played 2.45 true defensive linemen per play on average but did not slow down the Lions much, whose RBs finished with 125 yards on 26 carries (4.81 yards per carry).  There was enough pressure up the middle on passing downs to really help the Edge players.

Player Snaps % STs
Walker 84 100 2-9%
McDuffie 71 85 6-26%
Smith 55 65
Gary 43 51
Enagbare 42 50 8-35%
Van Ness 28 33 4-17%
Wilson     16-70%
Welch     15-65
Cox     4-17%

All of the Edge rushers had good days.  Gary had 7 tackles (5 solo) including 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.  That's a good day at the office.  Preston Smith had a sneakily good game as he finished with 4 assisted tackles, 1 QB hit, consistent pressure and a pass defensed.  Van Ness had 3 solo tackles including a tackle for loss, and 1 QB hit.  Enagbare had 2 solo tackles and added 2 QB hits.

As a team, the Packers had a whopping 12 QB hits and 3 sacks while forcing 3 fumbles while holding Detroit to 22 points.  That said, Goff completed 29 or 44 passes for 322 yards, 2 TDs and 0 interceptions, good for a 103.6 passer rating and the Lions gained 140 yards on 31 carries for a 4.5-yard average.  The Lions converted 3 of their 4 red zone trips into touchdowns.  The Packers played the other big plays well (Detroit was 1 of 5 on fourth down) and forced three fumbles while adding a defensive touchdown, but plenty of reps were lost as well.  McDuffie had 11 tackles (5 solo) and Walker had 6 tackles (5 solo).

Player Snaps % STs
Owens 84 100 13-57%
Valentine 84 100 3-13%
Ballentine 84 100 1-4%
Johnson 84 100
Nixon 56 67 8-35%
Sapp 2 2 6-26%
Kelly 1 1 4-17%
Rochell     16-70%
Anderson     14-61%

Jonathan Owens had 12 tackles (8 solo) and a fumble recovery which he took in for a defensive touchdown.  He came up in run support to hold the edge well on several occasions.  Although he allowed completions in coverage, he had a nice day.  Anthony Johnson, Jr. had 8 tackles (7 solo) and a pass defensed.  Ballentine had 7 tackles (6 solo) and definitely allowed some completions.  Valentine had 4 solo tackles.  Nixon had 4 tackles (3 solo).

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Whelan had 4 nice punts, all inside the 20.  He forced 3 fair catches and his other punt was downed.  Carlson made a 43-yard field goal but missed another.  He made 2 of 3 extra point attempts.

RB: 1.00

TE: 1.25

WR: 2.75

This was a nice win. Jordan Love forced me to use his photo after what I consider to be his best outing this season. Moreover, he looked poised again, and far more in command of the situations he faced. Even the throw to Heath against the grain did not faze me.

I do expect the PFF grades to be interesting, especially on defense. GB gave up a ton of yards and lost plenty of reps on the line and in coverage. But they made the big plays and played well on many of the big pressure situations. The offense can't run block, but they can pass block. Good thing Jordan Love is not just a game manager. The thought that the Packers would lean on the run while waiting for Love (and his young receivers) to develop would have been a disaster.

I almost used a photo of Tucker Kraft after he played 96% of the snaps, but there wasn't quite enough production to pass on Love's photo. Watson could have had 135 receiving yards or more. One was a bit underthrown and the other overthrown, but both might have been TDs to go with his other TD receptions.

It might be that GB was willing to concede some runs after getting the big lead, but I don't really buy that. It ended up a 7 point game. It is a good thing that Goff is one slow so and so. Not a guy who can run away from DEs and the like.

The rotation at LT continued.
Benny Sapp had a nice ST tackle.

The secondary without Alexander, Douglas, Stokes, Ford, and Savage wasn't precisely outstanding but it hasn't been the abyss I feared might happen. Quay Walker made a big play in coverage in the end zone to knock a pretty well-placed pass away to keep points off the board. Not so sure that the ILBs otherwise had good days in coverage.

I think Jordan Love really like Malik Heath who ran 5 routes and saw 4 targets. Kraft ran 29 routes and saw 2 targets. [I just found the PFF recap showing routes run. I will edit the article.]

Good work as always. I was a little surprised to see Goff ended up with over 300 yards. I remember seeing 171 from him early in the 4th quarter. It would be interesting to see if Barry switched coverages with the 15 point lead.

Still a bottom 5 rushing defense but they are giving up .6 yards less per rush compared to last season(4.4 per carry compared to 5). I thought the defense was more aggressive early in the game than they've been since the Rams started a non NFL QB. Does the weak slate of games to end the season save Barry once again? Sadly that's not hard to picture at this point.

True, but everyone gives up rush yards to the Lions. Not a great day against the run, in general, but it turned into a W.

As always, great article Great Reynoldo.

However, I believe you have some information on Love wrong:

" He completed 22 or 38 passes for 268 yards " Everything that I have read so far shows Love 22 of 32. I hope you made a typo and the 38 is incorrect.

22 of 32 (68.75%) is correct. I prefer that to 22 of 38. I will fix that, and also change his yards/attempt from 7.05 to 8.375, a much more impressive number.

I seem to have developed a problem with or rather than "of" as in 22 of 32. I set my alarm clock for 2 AM. Worse, I don't like coffee and have never consumed one of those energy drinks. Lots of numbers, but sometimes it takes a while for gears to stop creaking and worse.

I don't always drink coffee, but when I do, I add enough French Vanilla, Sugar, Cinnamon, or whatever is handy so as to make it taste nothing remotely like coffee.

They make a Nestle Cinnamon Roll Coffee Mate that has zero sugar that is just outstanding. I do use quite a bit and I can't drink regular cream in my coffee anymore. The trick is to use enough of this creamer. Try that and I think you will love it.

TGR,

"The thought that the Packers would lean on the run while waiting for Love (and his young receivers) to develop would have been a disaster."

To MLF's credit, I think they tried that. He's quick to abandon the run when it isn't working, unless it means throwing #28 into a wall 3x in a row.

That Love keeper on short yardage to extend the drive towards the end was a thing of beauty. The two runs right after it not so much but it might actually open up some 3rd and shorts in future games.

Love needs to work on selling the play action a little more which might loosen things up a bit. Blocking is the main culprit but there are other things to work on.

Before the 2022 draft I thought Doubs was the last of the tier 2 guys and he could have easily gone a round earlier. Starting to doubt his #2 WR upside though. I don't remember him having a drop problem in college so I thought last year was just a case of thinking too much. Maybe the level of competition made for easier, less contested catches in college but IIRC he had one of his biggest games against Tennessee.

He's 35th in targets and 39th in catches which isn't terrible but the average is about the same as last year. Good possession guys have a better catch rate. He also doesn't seem to open all that much.

At this point I'd like to see some snaps with Watson and Wicks both on the field with Reed. Not hard to see Doubs being the #4 receiver next season.

Yes, other WRs are improving. However, he is our big bodied possession WR, one more catch and he will surpass the 42 he had last year. 7 TDs !

I was, and am still hoping to see more Van Ness getting after the QB and disrupting things in the opponent's backfield. Van Ness has the speed to chase down slower QBs and RBs and I thought he would have been used more against the Lions and Goff. Unleash him and take some of the heat off of the other pass rushers.

The film guys suggest that Van Ness does not have pass rush moves. Pretty much just a bull rush. Another guy who came out of college needing technique work. If Van Ness wants it and is willing to put in the work off-season, probably with a private coach, the sky is the limit as he physically already is a monster.

That said, Enagbare provided some pressure, and Preston I think will be credited with multiple pressures. Obviously, Gary was a total force. I kind of forgot to give credit to Brooks in the article for his big play.

Imho, I believe that the Packers OLB's can be absolutely outstanding in the next couple of seasons. They are pretty good now but the two they added this year plus further development of Enagbare could be awesome!

The dig on Hercules before the draft was his complete reliance on the bull rush against inferior college O Linemen. It is still a dig. And most NFL lineman can neutralize a bull rush.

He hasn't improved much during the season, and hopefully like Enagbare, he will come to camp next year with a much improved pass rush menu, worthy of the Greek Hero namesake.

Maybe I'm letting Wahle's breakdowns of the games influence me too much but I think keeping Preston might be a good idea. TGR would know the cost and the odds of him taking a pay cut much better than I could but he's kind of a become a solid, lunch pail type player I'm not sure could have been foreseen after his "lost" COVID year when he was getting knocked 5 yards downfield by TEs.

I think a lot depends on what happens after the season. If Barry is gone and they bring in a 4-3 guy it's not hard to imagine Van Ness starting.

Preston is due $12.4M in cash (something like 26th highest Edge by pay) and has a $16.5M cap number. He's been restructured a few times, so he still has almost $14M in dead money. A June designation yields a $12.4M cap savings for 2024, dumping $9.88M in dead money into 2025. Preston turns 32 on November 17, 2024. He has $5.4M roster bonus due March 20, 3rd day of the 2024 season.

I suspect that someone will give Preston $9M or so in cash? He has 5 sacks and just 13 pressures (per PFR - PFF would give him more) prior to the Lions game. Not a #1 Edge guy, but he's fine as a #2 Edge and great as a rotational guy, particularly for a team that has a pass rush specialist for 3rd downs. Pairing Preston with a Leonard Floyd type might work if the team had a #1 on the other side. I'd like to see more than 3 TFL in 11 games.

I am listening to Andy Herman on a podcast. He is noting that the Packers put Zach Tom on an island without much help against Aidan Hutchinson. Herman noted that they battled and sure, Tom lost some reps. However, Hutchinson's official stats were 2 tackles (1 solo), one TFL and one QB hit. Not a game wrecker at all.

I saw Kraft stick his body in there a few times. He is/could develop into a good blocker as his form and willingness is there. So looking at those #s Smith will be back, but we will get plenty of cap relief from Rogers's contract and Bak's in 25.

Hmmm, that's a good deal more than I was thinking. I doubt they could get him to take $5M pay cut but maybe if he'd take a salary reduction and still get the roster bonus he might think that's better than what he could get guaranteed from another team.

I'm not as high on him as Wahle is every week but I do think he's their best Edge setter amongst the OLBs and that's certainly not something they should be looking at getting worse at.

OTC list Preston's 2023 value as a whopping $13.01M, much more than I think he will be worth.

I often find OTC's values odd. Kenny Clark is at $9.5M, Quay at $7.5M, Nixon at $5.8M and Gary at $9.3M (OTC dings players hard for missing time or being part-time), and Jenkins at $5.2M. I agree on Quay and Jenkins (who is grossly underperforming his new contract). Clark had a good game vs. Detroit with pressure (PFF assigned 8 pressures to Clark, 4 to Gary, and 5 to Brooks), but the d-line got mauled a bit in the run.

Have to go back and rewatch the game, but my sense was that Barry played a lot more three down DL in the first half than he did in the second half and correspondingly, the Lion's rushing attack got much more of their yardage in the second half than the first. When he played three down DL, Barry also rushed five with some frequency which Detroit looked unprepared for and Goff got clobbered. I suspect Barry went more with his favored nickel defense in the second half to protect the lead and his very young secondary, but why do that when the conventional 3-4-4 was working so well in the first half?

It also looks like the Packers finally got Clark some help. With Wyatt, Slaton, Brooks and a bit of Wooden, this Packer DL looks deeper and more disruptive than any I have seen for a decade or more. Finally!!!!!

Love has now stacked some successes with four straight decent to very good games (three of them wins). While I expect some more ups and downs from Love this year, if he has a 2-3 more games like the last several, I will feel very good about the Packer's QB situation going into next year. I had some serious doubts about a month ago, but it is now looking like Love may turn into a franchise QB for the Pack.

My take aways from that game are the difference that comes with getting ahead early. I believe that that knocked the Lions off their run game. That’s a huge factor and a great mistake by Campbell. They could pretty much run on us at will at near 5 yards a carry. This game would likely have been very different without the turnover driven points differential after the opening score.

The comment you made about a run game led outfit this year baffles me, but the associated point about having Love play with controlled aggression throughout is spot on. That just gets easier with a run game. Love has already showed that he does better off the leash through the second halves of games. He’s going to succeed or fail as a play maker not a game manager. That chimes with his college years.

The OL has had praise. I’m at a loss to know why. The fact is that Love was again under pressure continuously and we can’t block with any consistency at all. That makes what Love managed to do more impressive for the second week in a row. Doing well with that kind of adversity is particularly impressive. That he should have been put in that position of having to this year is equally unacceptable.

"I believe that that knocked the Lions off their run game."

The Lions run pretty much all the time, and when they moved the ball through the middle part of the game when they were down one and two scores, it was mostly behind Montgomery and Gibbs. This was two "off" games in a row for Goff, but credit the Packers for getting after him and making him move off his spot with regularity.

"He’s going to succeed or fail as a play maker not a game manager. "

Nobody wants a game manager...those are always guys you're looking to improve and move on from.

"The OL has had praise. I’m at a loss to know why. "

It wasn't an "impose your will" OL kind of day, but they held up against a defensive front that bullied them mercilessly a few weeks ago on the speedier indoor surface in Detroit.

I was one who thought before the season, the Packers could be a run dominated offense. This assumed the consistent starting 5 of Bakht, Jenks, Tom, Runyan/Myers, Nijman. Alas. This was only an infrequent group during camp snaps.

I still believe the run game would greatly improve if the musical chairs at LT would end...pick either Nijman or Walker for LT and move the other to RT. Move Tom to center where his presence would also greatly aid the RG (JRJ, Myers or Rhyan).

I don't think the Packers play the "best 5" as MLF always claims. They play their "favorite 5".

FPQB 2008 first 11 games - 2599 yards passing, 17 TD + 4 by running total 21, 9 INT. Record 5-6!
Jordan Love 2023 11 games - 2599 yards passing, 19 TD + 2 by running total 21, 10 INT. Record 5-6!

FPQB had better or better to say more experienced WR and TE, better OL and similar D. I was stunned when I learned about that stats!

1.25 TEs per play on average is normal for GB. 4.70 WRs on average is also fairly normal if a little high. I don't think the numbers support your contention. I do agree that this is a big chance for Kraft and probably an unlooked-for (insane? unbelievable?) chance for Sims to show what they can do.

I thought the same before the game, and he answered nicely. His blocking upside with pass catching ability could be a great positive for this team. Imagine two good TEs, could bring back memories of Chmura and Jackson.

Could Kraft be the breaker of the 3rd round draft choice curse? Still waiting!

I think he already has. Could be same with Rhyan. Low bar to exceed and we could oblierate it.

This was a rare game where both offensive and defensive scheming were good with few, if any, grossly bad coaching errors. While I am loathe to say it, both LaFleur and Barry called good games.

I agree with an earlier comment that suggests that GB plays better with a lead. They seem to be more in control. The young players played hard, physical football. Yes, the yards given up were high but that can happen against a dangerous, offensive team.

The Oline still sucks in the run game - especially inside the tackles- but good in pass protection, thank god. I would give them a C+. Until the coaching staff can move away from their favorites, this is going to remain a weak link for us.

But for now, lets bask in the glow of a great upset win! GPG

They need to figure out a way to get Clark's reps down.

Call up J Ford. Use more 3 down linemen in obvious run situations, especially against a tough team.

PFF best and worst from Zach Kruse:

Heath-91, Watson-88, Love-86, Reed-86, Nijman-70.0.
Runyan-47, Taylor-53, Kraft-55, Jenkins-57.3, Doubs-57.3.

So, I don't know what Tom and/or Walker got, just that it was better than 57.3 and worse than 70 flat.

Gary-92, Brooks-91.5, Owens-71, Enagbare-71, Clark-71.
Ballentine-43, Johnson-43, Slaton-44, McDuffie-52, Quay-56.

PFF credited Clark with 8 pressures including 7 hurries. I can only assume that his run defense grade sucked. Or maybe PFF thinks more highly of sacks and QB hits than of hurries.

Andy Herman top and worst graded playersd:

Love (+2.85); Watson (+1.05); Heath (+0.55);
Rhyan (+0.45); Jenkins (+0.35); Sims (+0.25);
Tom (+0.15); Kraft (0.00).

Runyan (-0.4); Nijman (-0.15); Taylor (-0.1).

Gary (+1.95); Smith (+0.85); Clark (+0.75)
Owens (+0.55); Brooks (+0.4); Quay (-0.6)
Slaton (-1.55); McDuffie (-0.75); Ballentine (-0.65??)

When listening to Wahle, just remember he is going to love thumpers and super physical guys like McDuffie. Herman notes that getting a penalty on 3rd and 20 when the pass rush has neutralized the QB already has to be a large negative.

Herman noted that Rhyan was really solid in limited snaps; that Sims is improving his blocking and can leak out so he looks like a long-term keeper if he continues to develop; Kraft won some and lost some. He noted that he and PFF do not agree on Nijman.
