Packers reportedly trade Brett Hundley to the Seattle Seahawks

The Packers will head into 2018 with Deshoine Kizer as the primary backup to Aaron Rodgers.

After a less than promising starting stint in 2017, the Packers have decided to move on from quarterback Brett Hundley.

Adam Schefter and Rob Demovsky of ESPN report the Seattle Seahawks have traded for the Packers former 5th round selection in 2015.

The Packers will reportedly receive a 6th rouund pick for Hundley.

Also of note, Demovsky says the Packers plan on keeping three quarterbacks on the 53 man roster:

What a great trade by Gut.

Getting something for a player no one wanted in Green Bay and was on the last year of his contract.

Really makes me wonder why Ted never made these types of trades.

Uhh....because he's our backup QB??

Just saying.....if Aaron Rodgers goes down with an injury against the Bears in the opener, we're going to be lining up a guy who doesn't have much experience in this offense.

That said, I'm glad Hundley is gone and I'm glad we got something for him. He had three years to prepare to run the offense, and when he was needed, he wasn't prepared. Goodbye.

Strange to see a GM for the Packers still working on trades and acquisitions at this time of year. Nice! Kizer just needs more time in the system, and this opens up a spot on the roster.

Well...that solves one problem. For what it's worth, I think Hundley outplayed Kizer but its tough to keep the guy who was a flop last year over the guy you just traded a former first round pick to acquire....

Wow. I guess we role with Kizer or keep our eyes open for a veteran backup. A 6th for Hundley is better than I could have hoped. Bottom line is both the Pack and Seattle are screwed if QB1 misses any prolonged time.

The packers just told me that they know the season is done if Rodgers go down in 2018.

Now, they need to bring in a vet backup next offseason and keep looking for the eventual heir apparent. It sure isn’t kizer.

I don't know if it's Kizer, but I know it wasn't Hundley.

You know, the Packers could have drafted a QB in this last draft. Good QBs were on the board when they took Alexander. That's not usually the case and I hope we don't end up regretting this.

Meanwhile, we keep talking about trading for Khalil Mack. How about trading for a starting caliber tackle?

Yes, tackles are few and far between. Most people want a arm and a leg for them. I guess we could bring Joe Thomas out of retirement lol. I really don't like the idea of Khalil Mack to be honest. I mean only if we somehow under payed him. Which probably will not happen. I think going after the secondary was a good idea, because we have always struggled there but when we fix a problem another one occurs.

What is not to like about a player that can single handily take your defense to the championship level? Yes you will need to pay him but we over pay for plenty of guys that are not up to there contract. This would be like bring in White back in the 90's.

At this point in Rodger's career arc- I'm definitely don't want to be projecting if we can develop a guy into an viable back up or not. I don't want to waste a roster spot on a player who's not even ready to be a back up, because he *might* be a back up in the future.

We are screwed in 2018, but in 2019 I want a proven commodity to back up Rodgers, and we should keep swinging for the fences on young talent that actually looks like they may be franchise material.

Good luck to Brett Hundley. It just wasn't working out. Watching Dan Patrick on Fox and he said "Packer fans probably don't feel good" about this. I disagree. I think Kizer has way more upside. I also wonder if Boyle makes the roster. Maybe practice squad?
Reality is if Rodgers goes down it would always be tough.

This actually upsets me because I like watching Hundley out there. I felt like he was a good backup, but I always have liked Kizer as well. I love what Gute is doing here, but was he not worth more than a 6th rounder? I was thinking at least a 4th or even another LB because we can't keep backers healthy for some reason...

Didn't think about that, that does make since. Why not reach and try after another LB now, I hope that is where this is going. Cushing, Bowman and Dansby are free agents. Yes they are older but it would make it to where we could have that veteran presence there.

I remember getting John Hadl in one of my football cards I bought from the store in 1974. Didn't know who he was as I was about 7 or 8. I do remember thinking to myself. This guy was an old man. He was bald and fat holding a football in his hand. The guy had a beer gut in the photo. Was totally out of shape yet GB gave up the farm for this guy. The Packers were constant losers in the 70's and 80's. Anyone who was born in the mid 60's knows what that was like. Too young to remember "The Glory Years". All we knew was losing. I have a great appreciation of winning now that I look a lot like John Hadl

I was arguing to dangle Kizer who I thought had more trade value to get a Olineman on someone's bubble. But, I'm happy with this move, which gets more draft or trade capital next year and gets something at least for Hundley.

Still hope Gute leaves a spot on the 53 to pick up someone's developmental Tackle.

I'm more bullish on Kizer. This is his first camp in this system, 2nd camp in the league. He's developing quickly. I think you put this guy with our starting O-Line, and he would win some games.

Now, I still think Gute's overhaul of Ted's mess needs another offseason, so anything short of the NFL's best player isn't carrying this roster to the playoffs. But Kizer is a fine backup, in my view.

I'm going to call it.

Kizer is a not an NFL QB.

History of being a pick machine through college. Followed him into the NFL. And he makes decisions you would expect a college freshman to make.

He's got an arm, and not the sense to use it.

0 picks in his last 106 attempts.

does that erase his 28 picks in 2017? Or the 47 picks he threw over the 25 games that were his sophomore and junior year before entering the NFL draft?

This kid does not look good. I had high hopes for him getting a fresh start in GB. The only thing I learned is he's a big project and I was appalled at his decision making.

I don't want to waste time and roster spots developing iffy back ups anymore. Rather have tried and true (even if unspectacular) to back up Rodgers. The only developing QB that should take a roster spot should be a kid with true franchise potential. I don't think that's Kizer, or Boyle.

It'll be a great thing if I'm wrong.

Kizer was started way too soon for a very poor team. He surprised me with his play—always behind a makeshift O line. At this point close to Hundley (pre season version) with more upside.

From a team perspective I see no material weakening and future upside. Not sure who out there and available would be better for those wanting a vet.

Well Oppy that generally tends to happen to QB's when they have no talent on the team surrounding them, and that goes for all QB's. Cleveland was 1-15 the year before Kizer got there, so expecting a 20 year old rookie 2nd round pick to come into that situation and improve the team or even succeed is purely delusional at worst and wishful thinking at best. Hopefully the Cleveland situation didn't do more harm than good for Kizer as far as experience goes. He's now 22 and actually has some talent to work with as a backup in G.B. Whether or not he's successful we will see but I will reserve judgment until I see him playing on a real NFL team as opposed to the perennial losers and posers known as the Browns.

Hundley being a preseason success story is part of what led the fan base to dislike him. He gave us hope and expectations because he looked really good in preseason play. If that had translated to actual NFL games and he had won more than 2 games against bad teams he could smile and chew as much gum as he wanted.

Hundley said he wanted to be traded for a 1st round draft pick. I don't blame the kid for being confident you need to be as a QB. I do understand frustration when he's smiling and chewing gum while throwing interceptions and getting sacked. He did the best he could and took a beating doing it. I wish him the best in Seattle but am glad he's no longer a Packer.

I think Boyle could make the 53 and then once Jones returns get stashed back on the PS. Also wouldn't be surprised to see Boyle cut and the Packers try to stash him on the PS. He's got potential but we'll see how he looks in preseason 4's game.

I watched all the preseason games and Boyle looked accurate as hell. What impressed me more than anything is how accurate he is with the deep passes. He has the uncanny ability to hit them in perfect stride almost every time. I never saw anything like it for a rookie. Look at the long td pass to Kumerow? Look at the two to Moore which he dropped. I mean this kid is playing and looking like he should have been the first qb taken in the draft. In fact I think the Packers are so happy with Boyle that I believe he'll be the guy that replaces Aaron Rodgers. He looks and plays like Rich Campbell should have played.

What I see is a QB who throws the ball in the general area of the WR.
On a deep ball, whatever, the WR has the space to adjust to the throw and make a play on the ball.
On short and intermediate throws, accuracy actually must be higher.

This guy doesn't look like a top QB. He has NFL arm strength, throws a very nice spiral, and stands in the pocket. There's a lot to like, but he's nowhere near ready to play.

If you really did watch the 2 preseason games Boyle played in you should have noticed that once a series he has a pass that just sails on him. The guy has awesome arm strength and has a tight spiral as Oppy pointed out. Before you anoint him as Rodger's heir apparent let's see what he can do against real competition.

He really impressed me against the Titans. I do not think he played that great against Pittsburg. We didn't get to see him against the Raiders. It's a small sample size until tonight. Hundley has also a preseason MVP and we saw what happened when he took over in 2017. I'm not taking away from Boyle's accomplishments just trying to tell Packer fans to temper expectations from a UDFA QB.

“Thought we could get him on the PC”.

Two words.

Taysom Hill.

The #2 QB in New Orleans.

I do not think MM will make the same mistake twice. Boyle is currently the #2 rookie QB in the preseason.

Hill is the number three in New Orleans and is going to play special teams. His athletic ability made him a mirage

But a team always certainly has to have a feel for who will get snatched up if they are on waivers and who they can get back if desired.

Boyle has looked good against the #3s in preseason but he's not as athletic as Hill was. A few of his passes ha e just been bad. He showed potential in game 1. Looked worse in game 2. Didn't play in game 3. Let's see what he can do in game 4 before we call him the next Hill. 2 very different athletes.

He is actually pretty darn athletic based upon measurables. He just plays from the pocket. He is raw, but he has an arm and has performed well when he played. One of the top rated pre season QBs. I am not surprised other teams might have interest in him as a prospect. Best project type we have had in a long time.

Kizer certainly did not "Earn" the back up QB position.

I challenge you to find any reputable source to look at the preseason games and overall body of work and report back that Kizer out-played Hundley.

He did not.

If I were to guess, the Packers felt they were screwed either way if Rodgers goes down. Seattle offered something for Hundley, and the Packers took it. I'm guessing there were not serious inquiries into Kizer.

I will also enjoy some crow on this one. I did not believe they could get anything for Hundley. I thought he would be a straight cut. Well done Gute!

Happy to see Kizer get his chance. He has a lot to learn about this system, but that gives him substantial upside. I am surprised they would keep Boyle on the 53. That likely means 6 WRs. It may be 7 WRs for the first two weeks, but when Jones comes back, they will have to make a choice.

I’m not surprised about Boyle. Most were commenting how he was /is pretty green still but his passes during the preseason were right on the money but the receivers were dropping them. He was leading them a little, hitting em in the chest...etc. Granted it’s preseason teams et al..but he showed some nice stuff I thought. But it’s easy to get fooled into who’s good or not without a history. There was enough history with Hundley so that’s all I’ll say about that. I still think Kizers decision making was slightly better than Hundley’s... he’s grounding it or throwing it away vs throwing a pick in GB so far and he is going through his reads before trying to scramble out of the pocket.

In any case, I hope we see neither play this year and just get to enjoy watching number 12.

The Pack took a flyer on a QB fairly late (5th round) and got out of it about what you'd expect - a somewhat serviceable backup who over the long-haul is not going be a difference maker. At best you'd hope he could hold serve.

For whatever reason the team didn't play well under his leadership last year. For God's sake they were shutout twice and his only wins came against the dregs of the league (and even that wasn't easy).

Some of the most boring noncompetitive games I've seen in years were under his stewardship. So I didn't feel good about him as QB2 this year. Looks like Gute took care of that but now we have to deal with a prospect who went 0-15 last year unless Gute has something else in mind.

Kizer played on the Browns I give him a pass for 2017. The kid came out of college too soon and needs some work. I think he's a great backup to Rodgers. Someone who has potential, needs to be developed, and you hope and pray never starts.

For Hundley the OL was a game of musical chairs. On defense our CB play was awful. MM didn't scheme well to change the offense to more RPOs and utilize our emerging run game.

Bottom line we are looking much better in 2018 and I can't help but feel really excited for 2019.

Wow!! They must have TT under lock and key. This to me is BG and MM working together to showcase a talent that they never wanted long term to get a trade. Something TT never did.

Someone suggested a trade for Mack. Yes I say. Give the Raiders Perry, 2019 1st Rounder and a 6th rounder. Pretty cap friendly and getting a really good pass rusher.

Cap friendly is why he's potentially on the trading block. Take that part out of the equation. If Mack was traded he wants to be paid for the way he plays. Not his rookie contract. I do not see the Raiders eating Perry's contract and don't think the Packers could trade him although they did get something for Hundley.

Green Bay can't win with either Hundley or Kizer. So you pick one that has the best potential, and trade the other. I'm surprised that Hundley captured a 6 round pick. Figured after last year, they might get a soda machine. I think he's got a very low ceiling, but he seems to be a great guy and hope he can be a solid backup for the Seahawks.

It's all good. I saw more promise with Kizer in this preseason than I have ever seen in Hundley. Much more comfortable in the pocket and just seems much more natural of a passer,so the three years of Hundley feeling his way along was just rolling the dice. And if it means keeping Boyle or another player at another position, all the better. Gute gives me faith that we will make the right moves as the season progresses as well. So much better then the usual approach of start the year with the same plan and hope it all works.

This action was a necessity! Hundley, honestly was the worst Packer QB that I have seen in over 5 decades. I just couldn't watch the last three games of last season.
My cataract eyes were very appreciative of the break.
To get a sixth round pick is at least something. Can't say too much about the value of that position but I'm sure that we will get someone better in value than Hundley.

I wish him well. He never complained and was a stand up guy.... But honestly, I am so psyched that we have Boyle for this year. I love the way he sits in the pocket and looks for options down the field. It takes guy with guts to do that.

This makes sense. Logically speaking, they know Hundley is not going to get the job done if Rodgers goes down. Even if Hundley is currently better than Kizer, it made no sense to keep Hundley around.

It's been said many times as people quote Ron Wolf about hanging onto a player that isn't good enough. Just move on to try and find a player that is good enough.

Also, I definitely like the idea of keeping Kizer and Boyle over keeping Hundley and Kizer, and trying to get Boyle to practice squad. Who knows, Boyle might be the eventual backup QB.

Well this week’s CHTV declaration “it is clear Hundley has earned the backup job” was not so clear after all!

I agree with this. A 2019 6th is a good trade, actually. Sure, maybe Hundley would have fetched the Pack a #5 comp pick in 2020 after he left next year...but Gute got ammo for next year.

Gute is assertive and decisive. I bet he is not done yet!

Getting a draft pick for him was more than many anticipated would happen, I'm sure. Best of luck Brett, but glad your days in Green Bay are history. I read all the comments and had to sign up here. Most here are talking about Kizer and Hundley. This trade is all about Tim Boyle, who I believe will be the heir apparent to Aaron Rodgers in 3 to 4 years. This Boyle looks like the top qb in this draft. Yes, the Packers will have to use up a roster spot on Boyle but in the long run it will be well worth it. Just my opinion but I am loving what I am seeing of this guy. He has all the physical tools. Can't wait to see him tomorrow. I predict 3 qb's on the active. Kizer traded next year and Boyle long term backup until he takes over when Rodgers retires. Go Pack!!
