Packers Promote WR Kevin Dorsey from Practice Squad

Dorsey takes the roster spot vacated by releasing tight end Ryan Taylor on Monday.

The Green Bay Packers signed wide receiver Kevin Dorsey, according to the league's transaction wire.

Dorsey takes tight end Ryan Taylor's place on the 53-man roster. Taylor was released earlier in the day.

The newly-signed wideout was previously on the team's practice squad. Dorsey was released on the team's final cutdown date at the end of training camp but was invited back to the practice squad the soonest date possible.

Adding a wide receiver helps the Packers will help the Packers get through a rough patch due to the injury to wide receiver Jarrett Boykin.

Boykin has been out ever since suffering an injury prior the game against the Chicago Bears in Week 4.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy admitted the injury to Boykin is worse than initially feared after being ruled out of the Week 5 game against the Vikings.

Presumably, Boykin won't be ready in time to face the Miami Dolphins this upcoming Sunday.

While Boykin has been out, second round draft choice Davante Adams has been elevated as the team's No. 3 wide receiver.

Jeff Janis has also begun to see a little bit of playing time now that Boykin has been injured, but it's clear the Packers don't fully trust his knowledge of the offense just yet.

Dorsey caught five passes for 52 yards during the preseason, along with returning five kickoffs for an average of 22.4 yards.

A seventh-round draft choice out of Maryland in 2013, Dorsey spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve due to a toe injury. He will wear No. 13.

The Packers also signed defensive back Tay Glover-Wright to the practice squad, but with Boykin's elevation, they still have two open spots to fill.

I expect the team to add at least one D-Lineman to the PS.

Or an O-lineman. Maybe a guard.

Dorsey is relatively big and fast, so I assume they'd use him on ST if he'd be active. Not sure how he played on ST during preseason other than as returner which wasn't memorable. Maybe someone here remembers and can enlighten us.

Brian yes, but that only mentions him as KR. I was more interested on whether he played on ST other than as KR and did anything, e.g. tackles etc. Apparently not.

Even before the injury, I was surprised at Boykin's lack of production. He had some key drops, which he's got to clean up. Seemed like a very serious guy, so maybe putting too much pressure on himself. The offense needs another reliable receiving option. I really like how they've used 27 in the passing game. All those years when teams were sending a back out and making first downs, I was thinking, "Why can't we do that?" Now we're doing it, but a third WR that can get open would spread the field even more. Adams is improving, but Dorsey has more knowledge of the offense. Can he produce?

Myles White's still on the practice squad, right? If so, that's a somewhat interesting roster move.
