Packers Practice Roundup - July 29, 2023
I do not normally hype things, but this Roundup is really jam-packed with information!

MISCELLANEOUS/PERSONNEL:
The Packers had a closed practice on Friday. It was a light, 50% speed jog through. Only credentialed media could attend, so there are some references from Wood and others about Friday and not from others. Friday was the third practice, while today's practice (Saturday) was the fourth, albeit the 3rd open practice. There is a practice on Monday, but it is closed to the public, which is a shame, as it is scheduled to be a padded practice. TGR
Practice done after 1:53. [Long practice after Friday's 90 minute practice. TGR] Demovsky
Starters in team: Love Jones Watson - Doubs Musgrave - Kraft Bakh - EJ - Myers - JRJ; Defense: Tom Wyatt - Clark - Slaton Smith - Campbell - Quay - Hollins Jaire - Rasul Ford - Savage. [Van Ness gots some reps with the ones later. TGR] Herman
Defense in nickel Smith-Clark-Slaton-Hollins-Campbell-- Jaire-Nixon-Walker-Douglas Ford-Savage. 2) Owens and Moore now at S with second defense. Bretl
I have to head out for the remainder of practice. Follow the usual beat guys through the rest of the day. Best players of the day so far: Love Toure Enagbare. Herman [Love 10 for 13 on the day, at this time, per Herman. TGR]
Matt LaFleur on what he's looking for in a slot WR: "It just comes down to what you're asking them to do. Are you asking them to run a lot of choice routes? Are you asking them to big body whoever's in the slot. A lot of it is matchup based." Wood
Last year, the Packers leader in slot snaps and slot targets was Allen Lazard, who's hardly the traditional slot receiver. Could that change with Jayden Reed? Here's what coach Matt LaFleur had to say moments ago.
Van Ness getting reps with the ones oppo Preston Smith in team drills. Herman
Matt LaFleur says he wants right tackle battle to play out naturally. Not accelerating the competition just because there's a new starting QB behind the O line. He says current layout of camp, with extra week before regular-season opener, gives ample time to prepare. Wood
INJURIES:
Looks like Dontayvion Wicks won’t be participating in today’s practice. He has been out since Thursday. Bretl
OLB Rashan Gary (PUP list; knee), CB Eric Stokes (PUP list foot), WR Grant DuBose (Non-Football Injury List; back), WR Dontayvion Wicks (concussion). Huber
Keisean Nixon just took a hit as a returner and is down on the ground keeled over. Not great. Nixon walking it off now. He heads to the sidelines. Not sure what he hurt tbh. 2) Tucker Kraft limping on the sidelines with a bag of ice around his right leg. He looks done for the day. Herman
Tucker Kraft caught a knee to his quad. He’s walking around the sideline with an ice pack wrapped on it now. Just a little banged up. Wood
JORDAN LOVE GETS SOME LOVE FROM PLAYERS AND THE MEDIA:
Samori Toure gushing about Jordan Love's pass on 3rd down in 2-minute drill: "It was literally a perfect ball. It can't be more perfect than that. If he throws it any more outside, it's out of bounds. Any more inside, the safety makes a play on it. He put it in a perfect spot." Rasul Douglas and Darnell Savage discussed the play in locker room. Savage noted he reached sideline to give Samori Toure a good hit. Douglas joked he needed PBU. Both agreed it was hell of a catch from. Toure: "You're going to get hit either way. Might as well catch the ball.'" 2) Rasul Douglas said Jordan Love kept throwing out routes all day. Douglas almost took slant to Romeo Doubs for 6. So Love knew Douglas was cheating up when Samori Toure went on out-&-up. Toure sold the route. Love delivered. Douglas: "J-Love put that mother f***er on the money." Jordan Love, having his best day of camp, hit Samori Toure down the left sideline for 33 yards on 3rd & 3 from the 46. Drop his pass over Rasul Douglas before Darnell Savage could teach the sideline to help. A big-time play from 10. 3) Jordan Love’s first 2-minute drop off camp: 4-7, 56 yards. One incompletion was a clock kill. Moved the football 74 yards in 1:40 against the Packers starting defense. Awfully good debut in his first camp as starter. Wood
Definitely Jordan Love’s best day of camp so far. Will have full details in today’s story. Looked crisp and in rhythm with a tight spiral. Play of the day was a 33-yard connection with Samori Toure down left sideline in two minute, drill which defense eventually squeaked out. Schneidman
The Schneidman tweet just above is just another example. Trust me, Herman, Wood, Schneidman, Demovsky, and Huber all wrote nice things about Jordan Love over the first foujr practices. There was a fair amount of emphasis on the intangibles, such as always knowing where to go with the ball, standing tall in the pocket with Hercules Van Ness bearing down on him, and the like, not just on completing passes to various wide receivers. TGR
QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:
Love dealing right now in two minute. Gorgeous 33 yard pass to Toure down sideline on third and 3. 2) Good series of passes for Clifford, ends period with a bullet to 82 on an out. Hodkiewicz
Next play Love to Doubs on a slant complete but Ford probably could have laid him out in a real game. 2) Love and Watson not on the same page. Ball falls harmlessly incomplete over the middle. 3) Short flat to Toure who makes a nice move and picks up some nice yards. 4) Love complete super short to Watson and Jaire, per usual, all over it. Maybe 1 yard pickup. 5) Love hits Dillon in the flat for a nice pickup. Good read. 6/7 on the day. Love’s decision making and ability to know where to go with the ball has been fantastic through 3 live practices. 6) Love hits a deep out route to Toure. Toure has been really good through the start of camp. 7) Love just missed Watson on a deep corner. Watson had a bit of a step. 4/5 on the day now. 8) Love to Doubs on a slant for a first down. 4/4 on the day now. [GB looking hard for the Z receiver and a slot defender. TGR] 9) Love on fire to start. 3/3 now after hitting a deep crosser to Jayden Reed for about a 20 yard pickup. Packers picking on Nixon a bit. 10) Love and Myers fumble a snap. The 2nd time that’s happened in camp already. 11) Play action again and Love uses his mobility to get outside and hit Toure with a bullet rolling to his left. 2/2 for Love to start. 12) Play action fake, Love fires over the middle in stride to a sliding Watson for about 15 yards. Nice throw from Love. 13)
Crowd goes wild for the one-handed grab by Cody Chrest. 2) LaFleur on Malik Heath: “He’s done a lot of great things. He’s a strong football player. He can run through contact. He does a good job of releasing off the line of scrimmage and widening corners when he’s getting press coverage, just ripping through. He’s got really good ball skills and he’s a bigger guy. I think Malik has shown us what he can do, and now it’s about the consistency in which he does it.” Bretl
RUNNING BACKS:
Really nice little run inside by Lew Nichols. Showed off vision, burst and balance. His best play of camp. 2) Emmanuel Wilson with a burst inside. He’s a big back with a little wiggle. Fun to watch. [Duplicated under defensive linemen. TGR] Herman
"Through two days, Tyler Goodson and Lew Nichols seem to be ahead of Patrick Taylor for this role." 2) Tyler Goodson has already been used in so many ways on this offense. Just today, he lined up in the backfield, slot, and out wide. Was a ball carrier, pass catcher, and used as the motion man. He could very well fill that Tyler Ervin-like role from a few seasons ago. Bretl
TIGHT ENDS:
Corey Ballentine and Kingsley Enagbare blow up a run play in the backfield. Tyler Davis with a couple tough reps blocking. 2) Ok Luke Musgrave just got physical with Kenny Clark and helped open a hole for Jones. That was impressive. Haven’t seen anything like that as a blocker out of 88 yet. [No pads, but a good sign, especially with Tyler Kraft leaving the field with ice applied to his knee/leg. TGR] Herman
Tucker Kraft said yesterday one of the things he’s learned most since GB drafted him is how to work combo blocks. Here he is working combo with Lukas Musgrave. Wood
Tyler Davis has been holding up well as a blocker. Going to be a role if he can continue to do that. [Contradicts Herman's tweet #1, but both likely true with Davis having a couple of rough spots today after being good in the first three practices. TGR} Bretl
OFFENSIVE LINE:
Jordan Love with a deep strike to rookie WR Jayden Reed, who got open on a corner against Keisean Nixon. His best deep ball of camp. Good block on the blindside from Yosh Nijman, giving Love time to set his feet. 2) Zach Tom, first right tackle for the third straight of what Matt LaFleur would call a “real” practice. He’s getting a ton of reps there. 3) Yosh Nijman says he doesn't see it as a "challenge" or "disadvantage" to win RT job when he's taking about half his reps at LT: "I'm playing those two positions right now, and making sure I'm really good at playing both of them." 4) Yosh Nijman first up at right tackle today (Friday's closed practice with Bakh staring out as the LT). Zach Tom told me yesterday it was still a rotation despite him being first RT the past 2 days. The reps reflect that. Zach Tom still rotating as starting RT even today. Yosh Nijman slides over to LT for David Bakhtiari after a few reps, and Tom takes RT. If nothing else, is clear that if anyone other than Bakhtiari plays LT, it’s Nijman. 4) Zach Tom and Yosh Nijman have swapped. Tom’s first appearance at LT in camp. Nijman at RT. [So, does tweet 4 mean tweet 3 is still gospel? TGR] Wood
Love finds Watson on quick out, Jaire there right away. Dillon with running lane behind Myers/Jenkins Smith gets by Musgrave, Love dumps it off to Musgrave, has room in front of him Love finds Toure in flat Watson in slot, him and Love not on same page. Incomplete. [This paragraph duplicates some other tweets, but I liked the addittional detail. I hope it isn't confusing. TGR] 2) Nice job by Nichols and left side of OL (Hanson, Rhyan, Newman) selling screen. 3) Tom continues to get some third string snaps at center. Bretl
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:
[Wyatt with a pressure - see linebackers.] 2) Tight end screen to Musgrave. Slaton read it nicely and is all over it. 3) Colby Wooden just beat Sean Rhyan and Emmanuel Wilson for a sack on McGough. Impressive play by Wooden. [Wooden beat some backups, but nice to see him earn a positive tweet. Probably gonna need him to play a few hundred snaps. TGR] 4) TJ Slaton with a big time time run stuff on Dillon. Looked like a former number 93 engulfing a RB behind the line. [GB could live with Slaton as is, but it would really help if Slaton significantly improves. TGR] 5) Offensive line moving some defenders today. Emmanuel Wilson with a burst inside. He’s a big back with a little wiggle. Fun to watch. 6)
LINEBACKERS:
Wyatt with a pressure; Enagbare cleans up for a “sack”. Great day for Enagbare. Play continued and Love threw complete to Reed who bobbled but caught. [Who, if anyone, did Wyatt beat? TGR] 2) Holy shit Lukas Van Ness. He just threw Deguara 4 yards into the backfield into Jordan Love’s path. Some real Hercules stuff. Play called dead to save Love from the wrath of an angry god. [Should I put this in the tight end section? Deguara isn't a TE. TGR] 3) Enagbare “sack” on Etling. Herman
Going back to offseason programs, there have been a few nice run defense snaps from Van Ness. Has been able to set a strong edge, forcing Dillon back inside to Slaton. Bretl
DEFENSIVE BACKS:
Love throws to Doubs on a quick pass but Douglas reads it perfect and breaks it up. Nice play by Rasul. 2) I know he’s been playing in the slot in team drills but I hadn’t noticed this up until this point - Innis Gaines is with the cornerbacks in individual drills. It seems they may be viewing him primarily as a slot CB. That cuts down on some of the competition at safety potentially. Herman
Matt LaFleur on Darnell Savage: "He's had a pretty strong camp. I thought when he came back, throughout the course of OTAs, he'd really grown. We're hoping to see that continued growth when we get the pads on." 2) Rudy Ford has consistently been starting safety alongside Darnell Savage in early part of camp. Third straight day he’s with the first string. [Written after Friday's practice. TGR] Wood
End around to Malik Heath. Really nice play by Ballentine to fight through the blocker and get into the backfield. Bretl
Shemar Jean Charles breaks up a nice pass from Clifford to watts on a slant. Then Thomas breaks up a pass late to Bonds on next play. Huber
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Carlson goes 0 for 3 on FG between 45-49. Hodkiewicz
Rough first set today for rookie kicker Anders Carlson. Kicking into a wind, Carlson was wide right from 45R, wide left from 47L, wide left from 49R. Pat O’Donnell struggled with the hold on the last kick. [Who was the long-snapper as O'Donnell doesn't normally have problems holding? TGR] 2) Anders Carlson’s next 3: 50L wide left; 51L good; 53R wide left. The rookie has a leg. Might require a bit of patience. Wood
Carlson goes 1/3 on some deep ones. I think they were all 50+. 1/6 on the day now. Herman
2-minutes drive ended at the 1-yard line with Jordan Love completing a pass to Luke Musgrave at the goal line on 3rd & goal. Looked to me like Musgrave caught it at the line, but official had him short. A chip-shot field goal for rookie kicker Anders Carlson. [So, probably 2/7 as the 1/6 were in drills, and the chip shot was in team. Not that it's particularly reassuring. TGR] Wood
One more practice note. If the Packers need him for whatever reason (injury, roster move, etc), Daniel Whelan can punt. Impressive today both into/with the wind. On 12 punts, he averaged 52.0 yards and 4.56 seconds of hang time. All were swinging away, no pooch/Aussie attempts. Demovsky
I wrote this following minicamp, but it still lays out what this potential roster battle at punter could look like. It was a really nice day for Daniel Whelan, who packs some power. Bretl [Waiting to hear about Whelan's holding prowess, or whether the new long snappers, the veterna Orzech or the rookie Broughton Hatcher, are good enough that an excellent holder is less important. TGR]
Nixon and Ford the opening gunners on punt team. Gaines and Ballentine had the next reps. Awesome jam by SJC on Gaines. 2) Keisean Nixon, Jayden Reed and Aaron Jones getting work back as kick returners. Before you get too excited about 33, he’s done this in previous training camps as well and it never really amounts to anything in season. Herman
TWO MINUTE DRILL:
Most of these plays are interspersed throughout the sections above. There is a tweet that mentions Chrest positively. This is just to give an idea about how things flowed during practice. TGR
1) 2 min drill. Love at QB Quick pressure from IDL. Throws ball away. Finds Watson over middle. Handoff to Dillon Quick slant to Watson, Douglas all over it for PBU. Great route by Toure. Love drops it in there down left sideline. 2) Nice run by Dillon to left side. 6 seconds left from 5. Pass complete to Musgrave, pushed out at one. 2 seconds left. Carlson FG good. 3) 2 min drill: Etling at QB Quick out to Watts. Scrambles. No where to go with ball. Quick out to Heath, incomplete. Ball looked just out of reach. 3) Clifford scrambles to buy time, finds Bonds on sidelines. Clifford tries to squeeze pass over middle to Watts, broken up by SJC in tight coverage. Kiondre Thomas with PBU on quick slant to Bonds. Solid day for Nichols as ball carrier Clifford finds Chrest on out route. 4)

This certainly sounded like a fun practice to watch on a near-perfect day. So many interesting tweets that I didn't even bother with Demovsky's tweet on Nixon taking some snaps with the offense. Perhaps that will be more than a TC novelty. At any rate, CHTV published a short article covering that.
Love had a good day. He earned his own little section, and the quotes from his teammates were pure gold. Etling is still #2, while McGough moved to #3 with Clifford being #4. Not so sure that will remain the case, as I expect Clifford to the be #2 eventually, but stranger things and all that.
The WR room is fascinating. It seems to me like the Packers are looking hard at the slot position, though as LaFleur noted, it depends on what type of slot guy the down and distance along with playcall requires. Not that the Packers don't need to be wary of tendencies giving the play away. Some wrote that the Packers seemed to be picking on Nixon who was manning the slot CB, but I suspect they are just looking at Z receivers and also they have an emphasis on using more of the middle of the field, both with WRs and with TEs. Lots of slants today, and a lot of two-tight end sets. Both tendencies have been predicted.
Very happy to see Reed shine yesterday and Toure shine today. Most likely Wicks returns soon, if not for the Monday practice (because it is padded) then for the Tuesday practice. I'd like to see DuBose, though 7th rounders don't usually have much impact in year one. Nice that Melton got some previous mentions. Watson and Doubs are rolling along. Love reportedly seems to have some chemistry with Doubs, and while he is doing fine with Watson, there have been some overthrows and miscommunications. It is early.
Musgrave is up and down, but the ups look good, apparently. Sorry to hear about Kraft who left practice after taking a knee to the quadricep and was on the sideline with ice on it for the rest of practice. Kraft had been getting lots of reps, though not so many tweets. The tweets on Tyler Davis were a little confusing. Clearly he had some good blocking days in practice one and two, but one observer thought he had a rough day today. Waiting for pads.
Nice to see some of the RBs making their bids for a roster spot. I have read some tweets on Dillon, but not a word about Aaron Jones, or about Patrick Taylor for that matter. Goodson making a bid on versatility, but that might not be enough if he can't pick up a blitz. Nichols got more kind works and Emmanuel Wilson a positive tweet.
Love reading about Slaton doing some NT stuff. Wyatt sounds a little more up and down but still flashes. Wooden got his first mentions - both positive - today, but I haven't seen anything on Brooks, IIRC. Dead silence on Jonathan Ford for the first 4 practices.
I think Enagbare and Hollins had separated themselves from Garvin and probably Hamilton. Enagbare with another good day, and Hollins has been active. Hamilton needs to get in gear as he only played 6 ST snaps in 2021 and 26 in 2022, so STs isn't a ticket for him. Brenton Cox still has a chance to impress. I really liked reading that Van Ness' run defense has looked very good. Also noted that he isn't really allowed to bull rush yet. I haven't read anything about Carpenter or Eric Wilson as ILBs, but they are both decent bets to make the team just for their ST prowess.
Valentine impressed a bit today. Alexander looks like a stud, and Douglas looks like a very good starting #2 CB. Kiondre Thomas got a nice tweet, and Jean-Charles as well, though I can't remember if it was just for a good jam on STs or if there was one about him as a DB.
Glad to see Tarvarius Moore back out there at safety. It would be nice to see someone push Leavitt out of his #2 reps to #3 (or #4) where he belongs. I hope one or two string together some nice performances. Pretty quiet from Rudy Ford or Savage, really.
OL is fun. The IOL had a good run blocking day. This is a zero sum game, so if the OL had a good day, then the defense didn't. I am not sure who the OL had a good day against. It must be hard to watch practice and text simultaneously, but I'd love to know who Jenkins/Myers moved on that tweet I included, for example.
One bad snap by the LS, and Carlson had a dreadful day. Can't do that in a game.

"Very happy to see Reed shine yesterday and Toure shine today. Most likely Wicks returns soon, if not for the Monday practice (because it is padded) then for the Tuesday practice."
It's looking like it's going to be a dogfight for those last couple WR spots. Heath has been getting a lot of work and some good press, too, in these early stages. He's a James Jones type who probably deserved to have his name called on draft day.
"Glad to see Tarvarius Moore back out there at safety. It would be nice to see someone push Leavitt out of his #2 reps to #3 (or #4) where he belongs."
After watching how poor Leavitt was in last year's preseason action, I hope that he can be pushed out of that slot. I'd be even happier if one of these guys who can develop into a contributor on defense could push him off the roster altogether, but given he's a Bisaccia favorite, that seems to be a big ask.
"OL is fun. The IOL had a good run blocking day. This is a zero sum game, so if the OL had a good day, then the defense didn't. "
^^THIS!^^
We can only hope that the OL has been SO good that they're going to be hard to beat by even good DLs, and that they're also sharpening the defensive front.
"One bad snap by the LS, and Carlson had a dreadful day. Can't do that in a game."
More sevens, fewer threes.

Thanks again for these roundups TGR. I think Owens ends up the starter opposite Savage. I think the Texans were playing him a little deeper than he should be, probably out of necessity. Play him up and take advantage of that 6% missed tackle rate.
Also interested to hear if Savage takes any snaps at nickel. No idea who would play deep in that instance but there's a few writers that think that's his most natural spot.

Jordan Love is about to take the NFL by surprise. Its going to be glorious.

Great stuff again, TGR, and much appreciated!
Love - it was only a matter of time before he started lighting it up. Demo had him 16 of 22 on the day. To think 2 of those were throw aways… He’s made plenty of money shots Days 1-3 too, with drops from receivers, overthrows, missed routes, the stuff we all expect early. Music to my ears that he’s getting dialed in.
O in the middle - Had to laugh. Guess ANY slot defender is going to feel picked on with the full-on arsenal Gutekunst appears to have loaded LaFleur with for QB1 targets. Speed added these last 2 years to attack the middle of the field is impressive. Reed, Toure, Goodson, Melton, Musgrave all are turning heads. Even Chrest got in on the action. SPEED.
PRESSURE! - Enagbare. LVN. Really great hearing about these two regularly making plays. We’re not even in pads. Long road ahead of us, but encouraging.
DBs - Valentine keeps showing up, but good to see SJC and Thomas making some big plays. Moore poppin in at Safety a plus, and we’ll hear more from MOORE. Quality depth there is essential. Gaines getting CB reps a big plus for the former TCU CB turned Safety. As tough decisions get made, the more you can do… multi-positional players are key for Barry. WesHod has called Gaines out for some time as a player this staff really likes.
DL - Nice to see Slaton making his presence felt. Ford? He’ll get his in time. Pads make a difference. Going up against real opponents more so for NTs. Joint practices should help. Matt Schneidman raving on Packers iDL in his post practice piece is great to hear as well. All of Wooden, Brooks, Wyatt, Clark, Slaton making noise in backfield Saturday.
Packers signing C James Empey (2022 UDFA) off waivers from TEN might send a message to Myers (too many fumbled snaps?), or, may indicate how much they love Zach Tom at RT. Interesting.

"Great stuff again, TGR, and much appreciated!"
I'll piggy-back on that! You're doing a great service for us, TGR!
"Packers signing C James Empey (2022 UDFA) off waivers from TEN might send a message to Myers (too many fumbled snaps?), or, may indicate how much they love Zach Tom at RT. Interesting."
I think it says a lot more about their view of Jake Hanson, who has been underwhelming (I'm being nice), and has had a lingering injury this offseason. On game days, they'll have three guys who can play C active: Myers, Tom, and Jenkins. I think this is more about finding competition for that PS IOL who can be activated in case of injury.

Oh. Yeah. How did I forget about… Hanson?
Whoosh.
You know what though, all kidding aside, Gutekunst diligently re-fills open OL spot from DJ Scaife release about 5 days ago.

"Carlson goes 1/3 on some deep ones. I think they were all 50+. 1/6 on the day now."
This is a player I'm really watching. It would be a shame for Love and these other youngsters on offense to battle all game long, drive into position for a game winning FG, and this dude misses it.

50+ yard kicks on a windy day, at least one of which had some kind of snap/hold issue as I understand it means nothing of significance. I’m more interested in the 3 missed sub 50 kicks. Were there issues with snapper or holder on those too? Was it simply him? If so why given the contrast with record to date (kicking in shorts in off season and camp is one of the few areas where the stats really should be consistent).

I love hearing about the WR and TE guys.
And Jordan Love “finally" making good on his playing time.
But let's look at the speed of the players first.
The improvement of Devante Adams was obvious.
He had more speed; in and out out of his breaks
after his rookie year. That was eye opening.
That is exactly what we need to hear.
The next step. You just can’t say nice catch in camp.
Adams taught me to look for more from the WRS.
If a guy has separation. He’ll Be just what Love needs.
Timing is one thing. But the greats have more than hands.

Dude, you're crazy if you think I'm going to sit here and listen to you talk about the "obvious" improvement and his "eye opening" development after his rookie year.
You actively argued that Davante was a bust for YEARS.

I like the energy & vibe this squad gives off. Really looking forward to watching the team grow & develope this year. Injuries kept to a minimum or nil. Some early momentum start of the schedule & this teams attitude and young energy level are going to carry this team a long way. GPG!!!

Agree, TxFred!
Amazing how things can change in that respect when a - collective weight - is lifted off everyone’s shoulders. This team seems more unified than I can recall since 2009-10.

As far as I am concerned, meaningful insights mostly come once the pads go on, particularly away from the skill positions. With LaFleur, the Packers have been fairly slow to recognize performance sufficiently to change the pecking order, which likely magnified the differences between today’s depth charts and those in September.
Since reporters have so much to do, it’s complicated by the fact that they tend to focus on the ones and may be a high pick or two, meaning we don’t get much insight as to how other players are looking. Maybe by this time next week we are better placed to see who may be making a push and who maybe in danger of going the other way.
I’m looking forward to seeing how guys separate and catch when it’s really contested, linemen cope with real contact and power and so many more aspects that shorts practices will not reveal.
So far, the biggest takeaways for me are that Toure seems to have the ability to get free, that Valentine may be a find if he can finish plays when the pads go on and Heath has earned a chance to show he can get open consistently against good DBs with experience.
We’ve really learned nothing about the OL, DL or safety groups or the RBs. While I’m thrilled to see them using Goodson in a role I already wanted us to this time last year, we have not seen if he can go do in contact let alone if he can protect. Aside from Jones, the others are all power types, so that competition has yet to start. The same is true of blocking TE.
I just hope LaFleur and Barry give guys outside of the starters pencilled in now real chances to play with the ones against the ones and react accordingly. This year needs to be one if true competition regardless of pedigree and see who is hungry and delivering on field.
Thanks TGR for the comprehensive agglomeration. It gives us the best window I know of by far. I agree, it’s a shame the first pads practice is closed and a little surprising, but we will be seeing more soon I suppose.

I was JUST going to bring up same - big difference once the pads go on. Much can change.
OL & DL indeed tough to evaluate without them. Kraft himself said he’s a completely different player once the pads go on, as they are a big part of his game in handling the larger DE’s OLBs TE’s continually face.

"I’m looking forward to seeing how guys separate and catch when it’s really contested....So far, the biggest takeaways for me are that Toure seems to have the ability to get free..."
So far, it's looking like the clear 1-2 on the WR depth chart are Watson and Doubs. After that, it's looking like the front-runners for 3-5 are Reed, Toure, and Heath. The fact that a guy like Heath--who isn't a burner--is still getting separation and making plays before the pads go on, I think is saying something. Unless Wicks is done for the year or is just terrible, he's likely that 6th WR at this point.
That can all change, of course, especially when the pads go on, but Grant DuBose and Bo Melton better be figuring out how to get on the field (DuBose) and noticed. STs, anyone?

dobber, you might be reading too much into 1s reps and LaFleur’s extra work/comments on Heath. LaFleur’s showing himself ready to instruct anyone in the middle of reps regardless of roster status. Nothing against Heath, whom I like as well.
Melton has a TD, at least one on 2nd team. I’d say he’s not getting the PR buzz from the beat reporters, which is understandable.
LaFleur made it clear no one should be equating playing with 1s or 2s as implied starter status, according to Matt Schneidman this morning at the Athletic:
“We’re going to be moving guys all over the place,” LaFleur said. “And just because somebody’s running with the ones doesn’t mean that’s necessarily the case and vice versa when you’re running with the twos. I don’t want these guys to even think about the depth chart at this point.”
I do agree with you on Watson, Doubs, Reed & Toure currently in that order.
As for DuBose, I don’t think they intended him to roster this year. Ride IR for development. DuBose came from such an insanely small program at Charlotte University.

I agree it looks like Watson and Doubs and then a battle at WR. Hopefully injury doesn’t upset that. However, it looks to me fairly clear that Reed and Toure are currently 3/4.
However, I’d expect that based on experience and draft status respectively. That means they run with the ones most often when 3 or more WRs are out there. That’s what we hear about most. So I look for who else gets a mention for making splash plays with other groups. Melton stood out last week. If he continues then he should get opportunities to prove he deserves a role.
The problem with the above is that everything is covered but the traditional X role behind Watson or when Watson moves around. Is that Doubs or are Reed or Toure seen as capable? My guess is the idea was for one of Wicks/DuBose/Heath to grab that role and the last roster spot. None of those 3 are small, none of those 3 have long speed. All are going to have to show the ability to consistently win at the line and gain separation and to be physical and resilient in the catch. Does Musgrave change that traditional thinking at all?
Is there a guy like Reed, a stronger, bigger Toure or Melton or who proves capable of doing that through suddenness or agility as opposed to the size and strength of a Wicks/Heath type? It’s going to be an interesting preseason finding out, but we seem well set for talent other than in that context. One would think that Wicks had the inside track, but he’s going to have to stay on the field and make plays. So far, in shorts, Heath has and I suspect he’s drawn level among the traditional X profile candidates as a result.

Coldworld, this is such a great point of discussion. The X receiver depth. I believe it was set up to be:
X - Watson, Wicks
Y - Reed, Toure
Z - Doubs, Melton, Heath
I do think both Melton & Heath can work the X if needed without a hitch, and that LaFleur is insisting they are ready for that at any time should there be a need. I believe Wicks, if healthy, will be a perfect X backup to Watson.

TGR, much thanks for doing this every year! It's really appreciated by those of us fans who can't attend TC. I especially appreciate how you consolidate the tweets into position groups.

All good stuff, generally echoing other reports from other sources. The wisdom of the crowd, so to speak.
Dontayvion Wicks: Sorry to see he's already jacked up, but this is actually going to make it easier for us to stash him on the practice squad and let him develop. This is a guy that some people speculated could have been taken on the second day of the draft, and who has some great physical skills. It's not encouraging that he took a concussion in a practice without pads, but that stuff happens. He'll be given a chance to develop.
Like Goodson. He spent all last season developing, now he has the edge on the #3 spot, and any injury to Jones or Dillon probably gets him on the field. He will turn 23 in November, so the Packers might get several cheap years out of this guy at the RB spot. And now Nichols can develop for a year, so that next year, he could be on the 53. I think that when you have guys in support roles who've been on the job for a year or two it's a good commentary on your depth.
I'm glad to hear Enagbare is rocking it. This defense puts a premium on pressure (6th in the league last year, even with Gary missing half a season) and the rotation of Enagbare, Van Ness, Smith, and Gary is going to bring good outside pressure all season.
And it's nice the Love and the receivers are making some connections, and hopefully, we'll score more than 7 points against the Bears in about 40 days.

Wicks was a fourth round pick, so I don't think they can safely stash him on the practice squad unless he really stinks up the joint. A short-term injury will not be enough. I expect him to be the #5 or #6 receiver on the roster.
Goodson is interesting. When the pads come on, he needs to prove that he can pick up blitzes, or the pendulum may swing back toward Patrick Taylor, or maybe even Lew Nichols. I like the idea of running special plays to get Goodson the ball in space. LaFleur has not done this with anyone since Tyler Ervin, but I wonder if that was because Aaron Rodgers wanted to keep the offense more simple.
Like you, I'm excited that the edge rushers are looking good.

Wicks was a mid-5th rounder. Stashable if he doesn't show anything this preseason. I'd rather see him take the backup X role from Heath but it might be a tough ask given his struggles last year.

Oh sorry, I forgot he was a fifth round pick. That is a little different. He is right on the edge of being stashable. I've been thinking all along that Sean Clifford, another fifth rounder, could be a practice squad candidate, although the writers on Packers Wire assume he will make the roster because of his draft status. The Packers do like to roster their draft picks lately.

In order to pick up a guy off the practice squads, you have to cut a guy from your 53 man roster, and teams aren't always eager to do that.
I agree with the sentiment that hes probably our #6 WR, all things being equal. If anybody above him gets hurt, I think he's got a real good shot at the roster, but I also think we could probably keep him on the practice squad.

Wicks ”struggles” last year were from a complete changeover at HC & system. It was a train wreck at Virginia. So bad that their starting QB hit the transfer portal after Wicks left.
—
Pick #159 WR Dontayvion Wicks - Virginia (19th WR taken, #145 Overall Daniel Jeremiah)
6-1 206 4.62, hands 10” (77%), wingspan 80” (87%), Vertical 39” (88%)
TOUGH. DYNAMIC. SEPARATION. FEET. FLUID. SIZE. EARLY ACCELERATION. FLEXIBLE. AGILE. RELEASE PACKAGE.
ELITE balance. +start/stop/burst. STRONG HANDS any NFL WR/Coach would covet. Plays fast & explosive. Stacks corners with speed to get behind them.
NUANCED route runner & release. Threatens stems with vertical push, opening everything in front of him. Varies pace nicely = deceptive. ELITE BALL SKILLS.
DOMINATES contested catches. Ultra competitive. Often dragging 3-4 defenders before going down.
2021 57 rec, 1201 yds. 21.1 ypc, 9 TD, QB Rating when targeted 128.5
*Changed HC & OC 2022 and had a very down season.

It’s up to Wicks to prove he can stay on the field and make plays. He’s a guy who looked great and awful at times. He’s not fast but he’s got good size and excelled in contact in college, but his ticket to the NFL was that burst to get open and toughness not after catch threat. If a supposedly lesser athlete proves able to match that or to have better hands—there’s no doubt Wicks has legitimate questions there—then that playing field is leveled. Let’s see what he does in preseason in the x role and who, if anyone, also emerges in X type situations before we anoint.

We're clearly talking about how good we are at WR beyond 1, 2, 3 and 4... I think we will be OK. I'm hoping like crazy Dontayvion Wicks returns healthy and that he's able to be a significant contributor for the Packers for years. If for some reason that doesn't happen, plenty of options for GB.
With Wicks healthy, we are a very solid 7 WRs deep at the moment. PLUS, we have Grant DuBose to move up in case of emergency. Can't see there being one quite that severe with Musgrave challenging the slot reps, and all the receiving options we have at RB with Jones/Dillon/Goodson, should LaFleur have need.

Sounds good. Unfortunately in close games your kicker will let you down.
Hey I hope LeFleur has the balls that Zimmer had. He drafted a place kicker pretty high and the guy missed three field goals in one game and were talking a dome. Zimmer fired the kid.
When asked why didnt he give the guy time to develop he said " were in the win now mode not the development mode". They had a new punter a day later.

Wasn't that Anders Carlson's brother who Zimmer got rid of? And since then he's had a good career. The Packers ARE in development mode, at least for one season, so I expect them to give their kicker a longer leash than Zimmer did.

Crosby had a few real games like that and his career has been a great one. A bad practice is hardly a reason to jump ship. Now, if it continues then that’s different, but so far Carlson has been very effective in all other opportunities.
Has the decision to move on from Carlson’s brother proved wise in retrospect? I’d say not. I’d say on a par with the Bears jettisoning Gould as opposed to us working through it with Crosby.
That’s the thing with rookies, it’s seldom consistent excellence. There will be ups and downs. That’s why preseason is a repetitive process designed to discover the true level of reasonably expected performance and yet also why such players remain unproven until they’ve performed consistently through a season or two.

I remember a certain game in Cincy where Crosby had a very difficult time. We still won, but only because the Cincy kicker was even worse. Or a Detroit game where Crosby missed how many FGs? 5? He was clutch many times but had his share of bad games as well. Let's see how Carlson rebounds. He has the leg strength.

TGR! I'm sorry to say I won't be making it up to practice this week. A new commission is calling my name and it's on a white hot delivery schedule. I'll hit you up if I'm able to run up there anytime in the next few weeks.
I want that Kroll's burger SO BAD!!! LOL. Cheers!
