Packers Practice Roundup - July 24, 2024

NOT PRACTICING:
Jordan Love (contract holdout but Love is attending today's practice), Marshawn Lloyd (hip), Corey Ballentine and Caleb Jones (hamstrings), Donovan Jennings (knee), Kitan Olapado (toe), and Tucker Kraft (pec). Jaylen Reed came off the NFI list. Reed and Zach Tom only did individual work. TE Tyler Davis getting some work after being solely in the rehab group during OTAs and minicamp.
PERSONNEL:
Starting OL with Elgton Jenkins getting a rest day: Rasheed Walker, Sean Rhyan, Josh Myers, Jordan Morgan, Kadeem Telfort. An opportunity for Morgan with the first team. 2) Andre Dillard getting second-team reps at left tackle. He’d been getting first-team reps at right tackle, but that’s Zach Tom’s spot when he returns to team reps. The Packers appear to be cross training Dillard for potential depth. Wood
Kadeem Telfort starts at RT today instead of Andre Dillard with Zach Tom still sidelined from 11-on-11. Schneidman [Tom started at RT during walkthroughs, but since he can't fully practice yet, Telfort played with the ones during drills. TGR]
Number 2 OL: Dillard - Newman - Monk - L. Smith - Tenuta. 2) Interesting that in individual drills they have the outside corners and slot corners separated. Nixon and Kalen King the only two working with the slot group. Herman
Along with getting some snaps with the ones at RT today, the Packers were playing Telfort at guard during offseason programs. He said that was the first time he’d lined up at guard since junior college but it gave him a better understanding of the offense. Bretl
Starting lineups in walkthrough: Clifford Jacobs Wicks - Reed - Watson Musgrave Walker - Rhyan - Myers - Morgan - Tom Gary - Slaton - Clark - Smith Quay - McDuffie Stokes - Nixon - Jaire Bullard - McKinney. Herman
Kadeem Telfort said he was down in South Florida during the offseason with Wicks and Reed working on his footwork. He said Grant DuBose was there as well. Bretl
OFFENSE:
Really good pull block from Josh Myers on a perimeter run for AJ Dillon, sealing off the edge. That’s what Myers does well, great mobility for a big center. Wood
Teflort just had a really nice rep against Gary. Absorbed his power move, anchored and stalled him out. 2) Kadeem Telfort is taking some snaps with the #1 OL in OL warmups. Dillard is with the 3’s. It could mean absolutely nothing but will be interesting to see if maybe someone else like Telfort gets a chance at RT today. It’s been a struggle for Dillard. Herman
Herman responding to those who noted that Watson, Reed, and Wicks were the starters in 11 personnel and other observers suggesting that Doubs might be the odd man out this season: Don't put too much stock into the WR's. They rotate those guys a ton. It doesn't mean much." Herman
Safe bet that you’ll see the Bo Melton end around this season. Packers just ran it again and got Melton to the edge with Tyler Davis blocking Jaire Alexander. Schneidman
Nice throw from Pratt over the middle to Bo Melton. Then another one to Heath but Heath dropped it. 2) Nice throw from Clifford to Doubs in stride over the middle. Jaire in coverage. Jaire follows it up with a near pick of Clifford but Wicks is able to break it up. 3) Eason with the best throw of practice so far on a rollout his left, lofting it perfectly to DuBose over Gemon Green. 4) We may need to have a Ryan Tannehill conversation. I fully get and understand the Colts/Peyton Manning mantra of “we don’t practice fu*ked” but the offense is a nightmare right now without Love. (To be fair it’s still insanely early and these are young QBs). Herman
DEFENSE:
Isaiah McDuffie blew up multiple run plays during 11-on-11 today. Don't count him out just yet in that linebacker group. Packers might have something with Quay, McDuffie and Cooper. Schneidman
Enagbare all over a wide receiver screen to Wicks. It feels like there are 14 defenders on the field. 2) Keshawn Banks did a really nice job setting the edge on a run. He pushed back Dillard. Herman [Dillard's strength is supposed to be run blocking. TGR]
Great coverage from Eric Stokes alone down right sideline against Christian Watson. Sean Clifford threw it up for Watson, but Stokes ran with him step for step downfield, and had the leverage to seal him off against the sideline. A snapshot of why Stokes has so much potential. 2) Another great play from Eric Stokes, jumping a Sean Clifford pass to Christian Watson for an interception. Would’ve been a pick 6. Stokes’ second interception today. He’s balling right now. 3) Couple reps later, Eric Stokes catches a drop off Dontayvion Wicks’ hands to intercept a Sean Clifford pass. Good finish from Stokes snagging the deflection before football hit the ground. 4) More Eric Stokes: defensive pass interference against Christian Watson. Sean Clifford under threw a deep ball on the left sideline, hung it up in the air too long, and Stokes trucked him as Watson waited for it. Wood
Eric Stokes was the star of camp on Wednesday with two INTs and a nice PBU. It’s only one day without pads, but it might signify there’s substance behind offseason hoopla surrounding the 2021 first-rounder and his rehab after two trying seasons. Schneidman
Slot corners doing work in the run game. Nixon with a stop at the line then Kalen King with a stop behind the line. Such a huge part of that position. 2) Carrington Valentine with a near pick of Pratt. His 3rd pass breakup since yesterday. 2) Players like AJJ, Evan Williams, and Edgerrin Cooper are rotating in with the ones. But Carrington Valentine is on the other side of the field with the 2’s. It’s early - and read into depth chart stuff at your own risk, but certainly seems like Stokes is ahead of Valentine early. Herman
Rookie safety Evan Williams with his first pick of camp, winning a Sean Clifford jump ball in the end zone over Dontayvion Wicks. Good finish on the play deep downfield from Williams. 2) Anthony Johnson Jr. with an interception against Jacob Eason. Certainly not Eason’s fault. He put it on the money to WR Jalen Wayne down the middle, but pass tipped off Wayne’s hands. Wood
That does it for practice. Another dominant performance by the defense that included 5 interceptions (Stokes x2, Williams, AJJ, Sapp). Valentine & Jaire also had near picks. Offense does pushups after practice. A massive struggle for the QBs. Herman
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Turner goes 2/3 again. He’s gone 2/3 every time. 4/6 on the day. 8/12 for camp so far. 2)Josh Jacobs getting some reps as KR. Herman

Drafted players about whom little has been heard include Glover and TyRon Hopper.
I see Newman was with the twos. Tenuta down to the threes. Ballentine has been quiet, and I at least read a tweet or two about Khalen King.
Some tipped balls today. Not all the INTs were bad passes, but there were plenty of those. A number of tweets about woobly balls thrown by Clifford. It's fair to say that's his MO - not beautiful but a gamer. No gaudy stuff from the OLBs. Good days from the safeties and cornerbacks - hard to say if it is the QBs or the talent of the DBs.

Thanks for the roundup, TGR. This is my second try. The first try they told me the site was having problems.
Kind of confusing Telfort reports, but I'll put it down to different phases of practice or someone looking from the other side of the field and mixing numbers up.
Caleb Jones seems not to ever get a break. I sure want him getting some reps. He's my short yardage-goal line-jumbo package crush. Guess his health has almost always stood in his way.
It's nice to have these young QBs working with the 1s this early incamp. I think it helped with Love's development in previous "hold out" seasons. Just hope the coaches keep tight reins on these guys because it sounds like they're hanging the WRs out to dry and we don't need injuries before the pads even go on.

We always have a crowd here for Camp. Has our crowd been stricken by Crowd Strike?
I would like to see Caleb the Giant make a statement to be swing T. Also, what is going on with Luke Tenuta? Is he practicing or dinged up?

The 3 day string of struggles for the Offense could be due to Love's absence but the D usually has their way early as O installs are more complex and OL shuffles create synergy issues.
But the Offense also is trying to defend against a new look Pack Attack Defense. Ansley and Downard have the DBs wired in!
I would be incredibly concerned if the O was having its way with the D early in camp. Hafley is getting his men to play and play fast.

“…. the offense is a nightmare right now without Love. (To be fair it’s still insanely early and these are young QBs). Herman”
Let’s be more specific, the OL seems to be the issue, primarily. The skill players are doing fine and, while Clifford and Pratt are inexperienced, they don’t bear responsibility for Gary and others getting sacks galore or RBs getting caught in the backfield.
To be fair, the OL is being experimented with, partly out of necessity with not just Tom out but Jones and a day off for Jenkins yesterday as well. Dillard may be being cross trained or the Packers may have seen enough. Both he and apparently Tenuta have been bad. In Dillard’s case, it’s the same failings as in prior years. The packers may well have seen enough and he’s now making up numbers given the absentees.
I read that Hopper is not being heard of, yet I read elsewhere that he’d made some backfield plays against the run. Presumably that was with the seconds. Herman stated that he’s making a habit of that in his report on yesterday, for example.
Generally, this raised a perennial key point: It’s always a trap to go off mentions from posts by those only or almost exclusively watching the first group. Its pretty hard to watch multiple groups though, so unless there’s a split of responsibility, the reporting is understandable, just prone to being blinkered on a team well known slow to involve rookies in the first group. The most one tends to hear about the seconds is when they get a run with the ones. In Hoppers case, for example, that’s something Cooper has just started to get. We didn’t hear much of Williams till he popped up with the ones the other day, as another example.

'''Let’s be more specific, the OL seems to be the issue, primarily''
No pads, out of position. No Tom, no Jenkins, our two best OL.
I think we should take all these early reports with a huge grain of salt. If it's Week 5 and we're still struggling, that's different.

I get that you included a disclaimer. My point is that the first week, no pads, missing main guys.....nothing to worry about. I don't expect us to be in midseason form until....midseason, which is sometime before Halloween. Guys will get hurt, we'll have to move people around, and eventually we'll get 5 guys practicing and playing together. Never underestimate the value of 20 or 40 practices, plus games, to help people improve.

I have been hearing the Packers want a longer deal but I would prefer to sign Love to a shorter deal that says, your being paid but the team has an out if they need it. I wonder what Love's agent would say to a 3 year deal that guarantees $135M ($45M/yr) and has incentives to get him up to $55M a year. I wouldn't even make them that hard of incentives but things like top 5 in the NFC in QBR or tied to how far the team goes in the playoffs. This would give Love great money with a chance to make elite money and the team wouldn't be tied down for the next 5 years if he doesn't improve. Also gives Love a chance to cash in again while still having most of his prime ahead of him.
As Gute stated there are lots of areas of growth we need to see from Love before we think he is a top 5 QB deserving of the big payday. You pay a QB that is 6 to 15 top money your team will flounder, see the Vikings and Cousins. Very good QB paid like he was top 5 but never could get them over the top.

Did somebody forget to give the CHTV interwebz wheels a shot of WD40 this week? I feel like I'm back on AOL with a dialup modem.
It's a fast (okay, maybe a s l o w) track from here to a dumpster fire. That's all I'm saying.

Segueing a bit. Seems Gutekunst' patience might be getting just a tad frayed. His comments yesterday:
"“Every day he misses is not great for our football team,” Gutekunst told Yahoo Sports. “We certainly understand the decisions he’s making. But yeah, this time is really, really important for our entire team. Certainly for him as well and we want him out there. We’d like him out there. We expect him out there.”
That last sentence stood out to me.

The guaranteed money is always the hold up.
They will get it done. But it's Black mail.
He's been the starter 1 year.
There is No justification for the numbers and the
refuse to practice. IMO - He is replaceable.

I don't get it, training camp just started and the injury report looks like mid season, if these guys don't want to practice send them home, same goes for Jordan Love. Lots of big talk during the off-season, now he needs to be in training camp. He's basically only shown me a half season of above average play, not enough to demand the type of contract he wants.
