Packers Practice roundup, August 7, 2024
Luke Musgrave, AJ Dillon, Dontayvion Wicks, Zach Tom, Devonte Wyatt, and Ty'Ron Hopper all had nice days in practice.

INJURIES:
WR Jayden Reed is not practicing because of a calf injury. 2) Matt LaFleur says CB Carrington Valentine and LB Edgerrin Cooper are "not quite yet" ready for practice. 3) Matt LaFleur says Jordan Morgan dropped out of practice with a shoulder injury: "It's nothing long term, but he's going to be out probably for a week or so." [It seems pretty clear that Morgan has won the starting RG spot. TGR] Wood
WR Dimitri Stanley (hamstring), CB Carrington Valentine (hamstring), DE Deslin Alexandre (lower leg), DE Keshawn Banks (groin), LB Edgerrin Cooper (hip), G Donovan Jennings (knee), RG Jordan Morgan (shoulder) were still out. 2) New Injury: WR Jaylen Reed (calf). 3) LB Quay Walker (unknown) and DE Kingsley Enagbare (hamstring) returned to practice. Huber
Tucker Kraft was out there running routes and catching passes from Love. TGR
Packers waived/injured CB Don Callis and WR Rory Starkey Signed DE Brevin Allen, DE Zach Morton and K Alex Hale (Oklahoma State). Huber
PERSONNEL:
With first-round pick Jordan Morgan out with a shoulder injury, Sean Rhyan got all the first-team reps at right guard. Zach Tom got most of the action at right tackle, with Kadeem Telfort coming on in relief during any lengthy series. 2) There isn’t a “No. 2” line, per se, but the Packers went with this to start the day: Caleb Jones at left tackle, Royce Newman at left guard, Jacob Monk at center, Lecitus Smith at right guard and Kadeem Telfort at right tackle. Later, they went with Andre Dillard, Monk, Smith, Luke Tenuta and Travis Glover. 3) Bullard has been the "starter" opposite McKinney the last three practices. The rotation will continue, though, LaFleur said. Huber
With Morgan out, we again saw Rasheed Walker at left tackle followed by Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan, and Zach Tom. Just like on Tuesday, the Packers are still easing Tom back into the team portion and had him take some 11-on-11 reps off with Caleb Jones and Kadeem Telfort filling in for him. On the second offensive line, Telfort and Andre Dillard rotated each series between left tackle and right tackle. When Jones wasn’t with the ones, he spent some time with the second and third units at both tackle spots. Bretl
OFFENSE:
LaFleur on Zach Tom: "He looked better than I would've expected missing that much time. He was moving people off the line of scrimmage, both in the run and pass game.” 2) Tom gets pitted against Clark on third and 9 and holds his ground. Impressive rep to give Love time to find Watson. Hodkiewicz
Right tackle Zach Tom got a lot of reps during his second day back in the lineup following a torn pectoral. He was excellent, per usual, including stopping a bull rush by Kenny Clark. Later, he led a screen that picked up 9 yards. He was fired up about that play. Huber [Tom is not expected to play Saturday against Cleveland, but he is starting to mix it up in this non-padded practice. TGR]
On the second play of one-on-ones, tight end Luke Musgrave got behind Anthony Johnson for a long touchdown. Musgrave caught all three passes during the period, with another completion against Johnson and one against safety Xavier McKinney. After a slow start to camp, Musgrave is rolling. 2) The quick-hit perimeter passing game has been terrible for most of the summer but a pass to Dontayvion Wicks gained about 10 yards thanks to excellent blocks by Melton and tight end Tyler Davis. Huber [Sims had a catch, too. The TE room is going to be fine. TGR]
From the 20, the offense pinched it into the end zone twice, sharing [shredding??] the starting defense in the red zone period. AJ Dillon takes a handoff from Jordan Love for an 8-yard TD up the middle on second down. [Any rushes up the middle are worth noting since it has been a problem in TC. Slaton had a run stuff in goal to goal - see below. TGR] Wood
A close runner-up for Player of the Day is running back AJ Dillon. During a red-zone period, he caught a pass for one first down and scored on a run up the middle on the next play. Earlier, he had a tremendous pass-protecting rep against Rashan Gary, which gave Jordan Love the time to go deep to Watson. Huber
The Packers offense just ran classic split backs with Jacobs and Dillon. Love hits Dillon out of the backfield on an angle route. So beautiful I could cry. Nagler
Nice blitz pickup by Lloyd in team. Not as good as Dillon’s earlier but that’ll be a key part of his development. Herman
Romeo Doubs just toasted Xavier McKinney on an out route into the end zone, and Jordan Love did not miss. A 9-yard TD on first-and-goal from the 9. Wood
Two solid strikes to Wicks on No 1 two minute, good for 43 but Evan Williams picks off Love in the end zone on a 50/50 ball to Watson. Hodkiewicz
ONE x ONES:
- Karl Brooks goes 1-1 vs. Jacob Monk
- Rasheed Walker goes 1-1 vs. Preston Smith
- Josh Myers goes 1-1 vs. TJ Slaton
- Kadeem Telfort goes 1-1 vs. Rashan Gary
- Colby Wooden goes 1-1 vs. Royce Newman
- Sean Rhyan goes 2-0 vs. Devonte Wyatt
- Malik Heath vs. Robert Rochell: Catch
- Corey Ballentine vs. Samori Toure: PBU
- Keisean Nixon vs. Dontayvion Wicks: PBU
- Bo Melton vs. Kalen King: Catch
- Grant DuBose vs. Germon Green: Catch
- Luke Musgrave vs. Anthony Johnson: Catch
- Romeo Doubs vs. Jaire Alexander: PBU
Paul Bretl
TEAM:
1:20 left. 1 timeout. Down 3. Ball at the 30. First and 10. #2’s up first. First play Hopper with a pbu. Second play Wooden sack of Clifford - they call it incomplete. Clifford complete over the middle to DuBose but they call this one a sack. Brooks was in there. Clifford incomplete deep to Toure. Gave him a jump ball. Def contested. Incomplete and turnover on downs. 2) 1’s up next. Same situation: Love - Musgrave complete for 9 and out of bounds. Love to Wicks over the middle for a nice gain. First down. Clock ticks. Beautiful throw and catch from Love to Wicks downfield and out of bounds. 1st and 10 in defense territory around the 20. 50 seconds left. They still have the timeout. Love to Watson back of the end zone but Evan Williams out jumps him for it for a game ending pick. Huge play for Williams. Bad decision for Love. Herman
DEFENSE:
Defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt had a strong day, with at least three blink-of-an-eye pressures. [Against whom??? TGR] 2) On back-to-back third-down plays, Lukas Van Ness (and Wyatt) pressured Love into an incompletion and batted down a pass. 3) - The next two third-down plays were foiled by defensive tackle Karl Brooks, who ruined a screen, and Rochell, who appeared to break up a pass to Grant DuBose. Later, on fourth-and-9, Rochell broke up another pass, though that one was nullified by defensive offside. 4) Wilson was stuffed on first-and-goal by defensive tackle TJ Slaton, who did a little dancing to celebrate. Huber
Wooden sack on second down of twos two minute drill. Hodkiewicz
Brenton Cox making noise in the backfield today. Two TFLs against the run in the last couple plays. Schneidman
Hopper breaks up a first down pass to Wilson. Hodkiewicz
After the draft, Gutey noted Hopper’s stopping power, physicality, and range. We’ve seen those elements on display recently with Hopper getting some snaps with the ones. “Fast, physical, and just make some plays.” Bretl
For the fourth consecutive day, the No. 1 safety pairing was Xavier McKinney and rookie Javon Bullard. Evan Williams and Anthony Johnson got some reps with McKinney, too, but it was mostly McKinney and Bullard. Huber
Xavier McKinney picks off Love on a pass high for Musgrave over the middle. Tipped off Musgrave’s hands [actually, it was tipped by Quay Walker TGR] and McKinney came down with it. Quay Walker looked to be shaken up on the play, but he appears to be alright on the sideline. 2) Asked Evan Williams about his pick against Jordan Love at the end of today’s practice. Let’s just say the rookie safety is wicked smart. Sounded like the viral video of Cooper Kupp breaking down his TD against the Jags. Schneidman
Kitan Oladapo comes up with a pbu in the team period. Nice to see him get some time and make a play! Herman
During one-on-ones, Alexander showed his recovery speed to deflect a deep pass to Romeo Doubs. Doubs tried to beat him deep again later, too, to no avail. Finally, on his third rep, Alexander lost to Watson on an out-breaking route for a short completion. [Alexander has looked like a lock-down cornerback during training camp. TGR] 2) On the fourth play of the first team period, Alexander beat his blocker to stop an end-around to Bo Melton for a gain of about 4. Had Alexander not made the play, Melton might have been off to the races. 3) One more from one-on-ones: Rookie cornerback Kalen King continues to impress. Bo Melton beats almost everyone in this drill but King had an impressive breakup. Huber
SPECIAL TEAMS:
New #Packers kicker Alex Hale now 5-6 on the day. In the second set, he made kicks from XP and 40R, missed from 45L. Wood
With Reed out dealing with a calf injury, Nixon, Toure and Doubs are taking turns at punt returner. Nagler

The selection I had to choose from did not match what I was looking for. Zach Tom coming back and dealing with Rashan Gary, even in a practice without pads, is huge. Tucker Kraft running routes for Love is also important, and I found a photo of him. No photos of Wyatt, Wicks, Dillon, Hopper.
Sometimes there are enough tweets to do a roundup after Saturday's preseason game, but sometimes there aren't. Otherwise, the next practice is Tuesday.

You could get the live blog with Spoff during the game. That should give you a roundup.

I never really thought about Spofford. I always thought those packers . com guys pulled their punches too much. I will try to remember to add Spofford to the guys I always check out for the roundups.

Sounds like it was a good practice. Not a single mention of a dropped pass or major screw-up. Good to hear that Tucker Kraft is rolling. Meanwhile, Royce Newman keeps turning up like a bad penny. And the kicking competition has taken another step backwards, with a third guy added to the mix again.

He plays several positions (I'm not going to touch on how well) which is valuable on game day, the fact that he has game experience, he took a pay cut, and what sounds like a lack of IOL players setting themselves apart is creating a path to the 53 for Newman...most here won't like that idea.
I don't know who the #2 holder is, but that person is getting his reps.

Sounds like Telfort might be inching ahead of Tenuta and Jones for a backup tackle spot. Seems like those three have been around long enough that it is put up or go time for them. If they haven't developed enough to make the 53 and play with the two's by now, they need to make room for others who have the potential to develop into solid backups. I hope Dillard is improving as his start with the Packers was rocky.

Thanks, TGR!
I like the backups rotating on the O-line, but I sure hope we can start to get the 1s in there playing together more regularly. The only way for the offense to start clicking and getting in sync.

I'm starting to think that it will be hard to evaluate Clifford and Pratt playing behind the #2 OL because they'll be running for their lives.

Good to hear Mugrave and Wyatt's names mentioned positively in plays. The two have been quiet.
The Rookie Class is making noise. Morgan the starting RG it seems, Monk with the 2's at center, Hopper impressing the coaching staff (but Cooper is losing ground to him), Bullard and Williams are very impressive, Kalen King keeps impressing in coverage, Pratt challenging Clifford for #2. Hopefully Lloyd can make up ground but AJ is letting him know the backup/wing man RB to JJ is his.
Some good ebb and flow between the Offense and Defense.
STs? Whelan has shown up improved and stronger. Carlson has is still raising doubts with the signing of another competitor for his job.
Still, overall, a good start.

I'm bullish on Musgrave. I think he'll get a lot of chances, especially early on as Kraft plays his way back into shape.

Regardless of when Kraft fully returns, it's going to be a Musgrave ascendent year. You're not supposed to be that tall, that fast and have those great hands in one package.

I had hopes that Kraft would become the dual threat TE who can block, catch, and run well. I thought Kraft needed the offseason far more than Musgrave did. Oh well, maybe he was able to learn even if he could not work out, and there is plenty of time. And who knows? Perhaps Musgrave who already had the receiving ability worked on his blocking. Can't remember as single tweet about Musgrave throwing a good block, though. To some extent, GB does not regularly ask him to do that.

I agree. Whelan has won his job. Hopper is gaining ground, in part because Cooper got hurt but also because Hopper took advantage of Cooper's absence. Wyatt mentions are almost all for pass rush, but Slaton mostly gets mentioned for run defense. Slaton still gets more snaps. Perhaps a rotation is forming here. They are going to rotate to keep guys fresh, but I mean rotate based on down and distance, and perhaps based on opponent.
Agree on Bullard, Williams and King. Nice showings for the rookies. Lloyd is going to make this team no matter what. The only question is whether they keep three RBs on the 53.
Dillon will become a free agent after this year. Not sure where that leaves Emanuel Wilson, who also has looked pretty good often enough. Money isn't an issue with Dillon as he is cheap. GB has control over Wilson for a couple of more year, but perhaps they try to stash him on the PS for another year. GB might (or might not) think Wilson can fairly easily be replaced - there are a lot of pretty good running backs ever year. I confess I like Wilson enough to think he is at least a cut or two above the next UDFA they are likely so sign next year.
Very positive start. The safety, CB including slot, DE, DT rooms all look good or at least promising. I think the LB (in my slow to adapt mind, the ILBs) are a bit of a question since I think those guys have individual strengths and weaknesses that an opposing team and expose and exploit.
Similarly, the WR, TE, and starting RB rooms seem to have abundant talent. The starting QB should be very good. I think the starting offensive line is going to be average, but if there are injuries of any significance to Tom, Walker or Jenkins (in no order since I don't think the team can replace any of them with an NFL level player), I think that will limit the style and types of plays the can call.

Newman is our 4th round pick in 2021, and is 26. I think it's possible he could still improve. Presumably he is being coached.
