Packers Practice Roundup, August 14, 2024

Wyatt and LVN have good days.  Pratt gets reps with the Twos and Dubose plays with the Ones.

Practice No. 15 goes 2 hours and 8 minutes and ends with two botched 2-minutes drills.  Demovsky  [It was a padded practice.  TGR]

INJURIES:

Packers released LS Peter Bowden and S Tyler Coyle to make room for LB Chris Russell and RB Nate McCrary.  Schneidman  [I am not understanding this.  It isn’t like Orzech has been consistent.  Has Bowden been that bad or have the Packers predetermined the outcome at long snapper long ago?  Coyle did not play poorly at all.  The Packers just have 5 locks (McKinney, Bullard, Williams, Olapado, and AJ Johnson, at safety, with Zayne Anderson and even Bennie Sapp also waiting in the wings.  TGR]

New injuries: None.

Also missed practice: None.

Returned to practice: LB Quay Walker (dropped out on Tuesday), CB Carrington Valentine (hamstring - individual drills only Wednesday), G/C Jacob Monk (dropped out on Tuesday).  [Jordan Morgan only did individual drills and that while wearing a harness on his left shoulder, per Huber.  TGR]

Old injuries: RB MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring), RB Jarveon Howard (ankle), DE Keshawn Banks (groin), LB Edgerrin Cooper (hip).

Bill Huber

PERSONNEL:

For the team portion, as has been the case, Rasheed Walker was at left tackle, followed by Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan, and Zach Tom. On the second unit, Andre Dillard and Kadeem Telfort continued to take turns at both right and left tackle, and we again saw Travis Glover get some right tackle snaps with the twos as well. With Rhyan starting, the three interior players with the twos have been Lecitus Smith, Royce Newman, and Jacob Monk. Caleb Jones was at tackle with the third team.  Bretl

OFFENSE:

Good day for the offensive line in 1 on 1s. Dillard had good reps vs Gary at RT and won vs Mosby at LT. Newman has been steady in drill all camp. Morton pulled off a wicked spin move to beat Telfort at RT.   2)  Delayed McDuffie blitz but the O line holds up and Love connects with Kraft for 15 yards to the 2 yard line.  Hodkiewicz

Rashan Gary, who dominated the first half of camp, hasn’t made much headway since Tom returned from his torn pectoral.  Huber [Tom took no reps in One on Ones, though.  TGR]

Emanuel Wilson continues his strong camp with a shifty run inside for a solid gain. Clifford to Hicks for a good pickup on the next play.  2)  Gary with back to back run stops behind the LOS. One on Jacobs. One on Dillon. Run game is a major struggle right now for the offense. Love with a perfect throw to Kraft on a corner route. Williams in coverage. Down at the 1. Love to Doubs on a fade. Jaire pbu.  3)  LVN is having a nice start to practice. He and McDuffie combine for a stop if Wilson for no gain. Love with the keeper on a read option for a nice pickup. Defense didn’t see that coming. Christian Young all over a wr screen to Melton Offense tries a quick throw outside to Toure. Guess what - defense all over that too. Clifford rolls left, had Melton open but can’t connect on the throw on the run. Tough throw but it was there.  Herman

Really nice block by Dillon against Smith on a Jacobs run. Seeing some 2 RB sets over the last week.  Bretl

One on Ones:

A few OL v. DL 1-on-1s:

Walker beats Smith [Preston has been quiet all camp.  TGR]

Monk beats Ford

Cox beats Glover

Wyatt beats Jenkins

Telfort beats Enagbare [Kingsley Enagbare has been quiet all camp.  TGR]

Myers beats Slaton

Van Ness beats Jones [Disappointed in Caleb J.  Will LVN ever get #1 reps? TGR]

Bretl

In the pass-blocking/pass-rushing drill:

Andre Dillard beat Rashan Gary while at right tackle

Arron Mosby beat Rashan Gary while at left tackle.

For the No. 1 offensive line:

Rasheed Walker beat Preston Smith.

Elgton Jenkins beat Devonte Wyatt.  [Bretl has Wyatt > Jenkins.  Not sure here. TGR]

Josh Myers put TJ Slaton on the ground.

Sean Rhyan beat Kenny Clark.

Right tackle Zach Tom did not take any reps.

Huber

Red zone 1x1 highlights

King pbu on Toure

Doubs with a sick catch along the sidelines against Ballentine. Got his feet in.

^Wicks SKYWALKS for a leaping td catch vs Nixon. [^ See Kruse tweet below.  TGR]

Jaire breaks up a pass for Watson

McKinney pbu vs Musgrave

Davis with a late pbu vs DuBose. DuBose has the td but Davis knocked it away at the very end.

Heath td vs Ballentine

Wilson td vs Williams

Rochell awesome coverage on Hicks.

Wayne with a sick one handed catch for a td on a fade vs Green

Toure beats Zayne easy

Doubs with a win vs Ballentine on an awesome anticipation ball by Love

DuBose over Sapp for a td

Musgrave beats McKinney

Watson smokes Jaire. Great route. Easy separation.

Wicks and Nixon in an awesome battle. Great coverage but Wicks with a great hands.  TD.

Sims beats Williams on a corner route.

Melton breaks Bullards ankles to the excitement of the wide receivers. Td.

Heath beats Davis for an easy td.

 Herman

^ Dontayvion Wicks [vs. Nixon, same as above in the Hernan Red Zone Highlights.]. Kruse: "Wins against leverage. Physical through contact. Contested catch. This is high level" [route running].  [Kruse reposted video of this one on one in his twitter (X) page.  Nixon takes away the out route by positioning himself towards the sidelines but Wicks still makes the out route work, though with some bumps and a contested catch.  Fun to watch.  TGR]  Zach Kruse

Wicks gets away from Ballentine for a 5 yard TD Near pylon on an out. Ends red zone period.  Hodkiewicz

Pratt to Melton next. Pratt low key on fire today.  2)  Pratt now in with the twos. Emanuel Wilson with another nice runwith the 2’s. Showed off the burst. Pratt fires one for a comeback to Heath. Pratt fires again over the middle to Toure on a great throw - Williams knocks it out at the very end though. Incomplete Pratt drops sidearm to Davis who catches but falls down in the process. Nice job by 17 to avoid the ball getting batted down. Pratt with a dime deep down the right sidelines. King was in good coverage and it was a contested play but one Melton needs to find a way to come down with. Really nice stretch of play from Pratt.  Herman

Pratt just put a beautiful go deep on Melton but King breaks it up. Contested play.  Hodkiewicz  [Herman thought that Melton needed to come down with such a great pass.  TGR]

Two Minute. 1:40 left. 0 timeouts. First and 10. Ball on own 35. Down by 7. 1’s up first.

Love complete to Doubs short. Clock ticks.

Love complete to Jacobs short. First down. Clock ticks.

Love completes to Jacobs (one handed catch along the sideline. Gains 7. OOB 1:01 left.

Love to Musgrave on a corner route. Complete and OOB. Beat McDuffie. First down.

Ball on opposing 35. 0:56 left. Incomplete to Jacobs.

Love to Watson for 10. First down. Clock ticks.

Incomplete to Watson. Ballentine in coverage. May have had some contact.

Love to Musgrave short. Clock ticks.

Love to Wicks over the middle. Complete. Clock ticks and the clock runs out. Defense gets the stop.  Herman

2’s up next. Clifford at QB. Only down 3 in this scenario instead of 7:

Clifford to DuBose for 10. Clock ticks.

Clifford hell of a seam pass to Sims. Big gain. Clock ticks.

Clifford checkdown to Merriweather. Good gain clock ticks.

Clifford to DuBose. First down. Clock ticks.

Clifford almost sacked by Mosby. Incomplete. 27 seconds left. Ball at the opposing 12.

Toure comes up with a catch but out of bounds to the right of the end zone.

Christian Young sack. Clock ticks.

Special teams runs on to try and get a field goal off. Travis Glover didn’t get off the field. Likely too many men. Joseph misses but the uprights were still moving as they tried to get it back on the field. Not sure how to count that one but defense wins either way.  Herman  [Clifford said he didn’t realize the Packers were down by only 3 points in this scenario, so he thought he needed a TD to tie.  For the number one offense the scenario was all the same but down a TD.  Clifford said he should have checked with the coaches.  TGR]

DEFENSE:

Wyatt and LVN in the backfield is becoming commonplace.  Kruse  [But it is often against the #2s.  TGR]

Jonathan Ford busts into the backfield on a Merriweather run to disrupt the play.  [It sounds like a rep against the number ones, but I am not sure.  TGR]  Finally Josh Jacobs finds some daylight on a run left for a nice gain. Love layers a throw perfectly between two defenders but it’s just outside of the reach of a diving Wicks. E Williams all over a dump off to Dillon.  2)  McDuffie again with a run stop. This time on Dillon. Dudes been all over the place. Now Emanuel Wilson loses yards on a run. Packers run defense is absolutely dominating right now Play action checkdown to E Wilson and there’s three defenders waiting for him. Clifford quick outside to Melton. Ballentine there for the quick stop.  Herman

Preston pressure, Love tries a throw across the hashes to Musgrave and Alexander picks it and keeps feet inbounds for INT.  [Nice to have a Preston Smith Sighting!  TGR]  2)  Slaton jumps, resulting in free play. McDuffie makes a fantastic play to sky for a deflection across the middle, which Walker picks.  Hodkiewicz

Quay is doing team drills today. First play goes to Jacobs wide for a nice pickup. McDuffie all over a Jacobs run. He’s been awesome in run defense Jacobs toss outside - defense all over it again Quick motion throw to Kraft. Jaire all over it.  Herman

Increasingly, Kalen King has received more and more of the No. 2 reps in the slot. Huber

Every time you look up, Evan Williams is around the football. Just forced a third-down drop against Samori Toure over the middle.  Wood

Williams knocks out a would be catch by Toure across the middle.  Hodkiewicz

Cornerback Jaire Alexander had one of those vintage Alexander kind of days.  Huber  [Lock down.  PBU v. Doubs, INT v. Love, and a bunch of forced incompletions.  TGR]

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Greg Joseph went 3/7 today and Anders Carlson 4/6. For camp, I have Joseph at 50/61 (82%) and Carlson at 49/61 (80.3%) with the preseason opener included.  Schneidman

MISCELLANEOUS:

The offensive line’s pass blocking is improving.  The run blocking has not.  3 good runs today, one by Jacobs (with a nice block by Dillon) and two by Emanuel Wilson.  Otherwise, the defensive front stuffed the run again.  [Paul Bretl did not have much good to say about the pass or run blocking of the number 2 offensive line.  TGR]  Herman

Both Corey Ballentine and Kalen King have been working out of the slot in individual drills during training camp, but when the two are on the field together with the second unit, King is lined up in the nickel and Ballentine is on the boundary. However, when one of the starting cornerbacks gets a breather, it is Ballentine who is in before King. If the Packers only roster five cornerbacks, I would pick King over Ballentine because of his upside, but my guess is they find a way to get both on the roster.  [Ballentine held up at the boundary CB last season pretty well.  TGR]  Bretl

Rudy Ford signed with Carolina.  Kruse

Forgot to post these when I finished the other day. Best & Worst defensive grades from Packers/Browns: Best:

Evan Williams +0.60

Isaiah McDuffie +0.60

Arron Mosby +0.60

LVN +0.45

Devonte Wyatt +0.30

Javon Bullard +0.25

AJJ +0.25

 Worst:

Gemon Green -0.55

James Ester -0.45

Brenton Cox -0.40

Kingsley Enagbare -0.25  Herman  August 14

My best & worst grades on offense for the Packers: Best:

Sean Rhyan +0.85

Jacob Monk +0.80

Jordan Love +0.75

Dontayvion Wicks +0.75

Michael Pratt +0.70

Joel Wilson +0.70

Emanuel Wilson +0.65

Grant DuBose +0.50

Worst:

Royce Newman -0.45

Ben Sims -0.35

Bo Melton -0.20  - One of the drops was pretty well behind him, the other was slightly behind him. One was an egregious block. Also had a catch, and did some really nice things as a blocker.  Herman, August 11. [I guess the first set of grades was done after watching All-22 or re-watching the game and this August 11 set of grades were more immediate.  Not sure.  TGR]

Defensive end Kingsley Enagbare beat right tackle Kadeem Telfort to get a tackle for loss against Emanuel Wilson. Rookie Travis Glover replaced Telfort for the next snap.  [Bill Huber noted that Pratt got snaps with the number twos and Dubose got reps with the number ones. TGR] Huber

Joel Wilson has been a real surprise. I believe he will edge out Sims in the end and has a shot at the final 53

That seems possible. Note, however, that Sims played 75% of all special teams snaps against Cleveland. That is a leg up for Sims. Look to see if Joel Wilson gets more looks on the various special teams units in the upcoming games.

Three weeks until we line up for real, and Newman is still a threat to make the 53.,

The Caleb/Telfort experiment, after 3 years, has not worked. If they can't come in and play well by now, it's not going to happen, IMO. Our entire offensive line is very thin after the starters. Pray for health.

Is Ttnuta in the same boat as Telfort and Jones? Even without these huge humans, there's more depth to the O line than there's been in a while. Surely enough to get Newman out, finally?!?

Thanks, TGR!

"Run game is a major struggle right now for the offense" (Herman)

This is a worry. The run game should be dialed in before the passing game, in camp. Last season the offense struggled when Jones wasn't playing or was on a snap count. This MLF O has to have the at least threat of the run for it to work.

Since nobody has reported on the long snappers at practice, I can only assume that Peter Bowden was terrible at it. Wasn't he supposedly the best long snapper in college football? Is it really that different in the pros?

Fun to see Michael Pratt make a run at the #2 job. I'm getting the sense that he will at least play his way onto the roster, and if they don't keep three QBs, Sean Clifford will be the one who gets cut.

“Arron Mosby beat Rashan Gary while at left tackle.” That is an interesting wrinkle to the T competition.

Jones seems to be on the outs. This seems redolent of Nijman. Telfort gets whipped by speed consistently and yet he’s with the 2s? That’s a physical limitation. It’s not going to improve markedly. I know, I have had little faith in Butkus or Stenavich for some time, but this just seems dumb and contrary to on field play to the point of ridiculousness.

Yet again we can’t run block? That makes the Jones/Jacobs swap look dubious and possibly makes Wilson’s regular plus runs more impressive. Why on earth can’t the line run block adequately? Rhyan showed he can in games. Is it whoever is filling in at RT consistently? Who? Is it Myers? Apparently he was winning his one on ones but can he not do so if required to move a player not simply stop him?

To me this is going to be a defining attribute of this team and its progress, yet seems to be drifting down the path of last year, without the one player who could find ways to do it himself when available. If this doesn’t improve, power backs are not going to have good years. I would hope this is a burning topic behind the scenes, but we seem happy to sideline Jones (our best run game T) and to keep doing the same old thing generally as if it’s really not that big a deal. It is.

I'm just hoping that they now know what they have in Jones and are seeing if the others have reached their ceiling or can improve against better competition. What else can explain it, if even the beat reporters are noticing this already? Maybe because they're going with them this weekend and Jones is set as the swing? Also have never heard them say Jenkins was getting beat either. Did he lose a step?

It seems like the run blocking is usually bad in training camp but better when the season starts--although never great. Part of it is that the Packers put a premium on pass blocking when selecting O-linemen.

This coaching staff has made some odd decisions with the offensive line over the years, but last year I thought they basically got it right, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt so far this year. The five starters appear to be set with Sean Rhyan backing up at the interior positions. Worse comes to worst, it would not be terrible to have Elgton Jenkins or maybe Jordan Morgan slide out to tackle if there is an injury there.

The 2024 Packers will go as far as their passing game takes them. Passing scores points and points win games. This nano-focus on yards/rush, run blocking, etc, isn't going to mean as much as how many passing TDs we get, and we're going to get plenty .

We are thin on the offensive line. The starters are pretty good and if they stay healthy we'll be in business.

One media observer seems to be saying that the number two offensive line is particularly inept at run blocking. Hmmmm

Consider that Elgton Jenkins misses one third of all practices for veteran rest days. Tom was out completely and now is only being eased back in. Those guys are missing reps at this point. When he (and this is true for all the other starters) are participating, the coaches don't play them on every offensive snap by the number one offense. There is mixing and matching. And the backups tend to be bad in general and in particular as to run blocking.

During the regular season, as long as GB has its preferred starters, the run blocking will be better. It probably won't be a juggernaut. As run-blockers, Walker is okay (I keep thinking he will improve), Jenkins is good, Myers is hit or miss but overall, a bit deficient, Rhyan is good, IDK really about Morgan, and Tom is pretty good especially in space as opposed to pure road grading. [Do you roughly agree with these assessments?] I am getting the notion that Smith, Monk, Telfort, Dilard, Glover, Tenuta, and Newman aren't so hot as run blockers, and some are not so good as pass protectors, either.

The kicking game needs to be addressed. Both kickers fell short at 55 yards.. there’s an old saying in golf, 100% the balls that don’t reach the hole never go in. I can see if these guys were super accurate and didn’t have a leg but they aren’t. Instead of losing another playoff game by three points, they should have addressed, the kicking game in a meaningful way instead of a half assed manner by bringing in weak competition. IMO

A 55 yard field goal means a line of scrimmage of the 38. If you don't make this field goal, your opponent takes over at the 45. It's the exact same net result as a sack/fumble, you lose possession and get no points.

From 40 yards and under, Carlson was perfect last year, 20 for 20. Beyond 40, he dropped far off and was only 7-13, meaning those 21 points cost us 6 turnovers. The average turnover costs you 4 points and 40 yards.

I see a losing proposition, not a need to get a guy with a stronger leg. I'd be reluctant to take those long attempts. Better to have a four-down mentality at that point on the field. You're too close to punt but too far to kick (25-35), so you might as well go for it .

He missed 6 extra points. That's a lot. I think a good offensive team should go for two instead of kicking the extra point.

Nice point on the ball being placed at the spot of the attempt rather than the line of scrimmage (unless the spot of the attempt is inside the 20-yard line). Lots of people don't remember that.

Every metric screams go for two. If you're going to score touchdowns (plural) you should go for two. Every. Damn. Time. And unless it's 4th and 18+ we should never punt inside the 50, nor kick a field goal beyond the 29 yard line. Ever.

Agreed! Going for 2, miss half of them and you come out eve. I see no downside to this except in very specific situations.
