Packers Periscope: Packers vs. Raiders

Let's raise the Packers Periscope and look at the past, present and future of the Packers and Raiders.

Not even going to mention last Thursday's game. It was bad, bad, bad all around and I'd like to just burn the tape in my head and focus on Monday's pivotal early-season matchup.

Speaking of Monday, our Green Bay Packers head out to Oakl-... I mean Los Ang-... I mean LAS VEGAS to take on the Raiders and our sweet prince, Davante Adams. This game is likely the most exciting travel destination for traveling fans, so I'd expect there to be a lot of green and gold in the stands.

So let's raise up our periscope and take a look at the past, present and future of Packers - Raiders.

The Past

Despite being franchises both in existence since the 1960s, this is only matchup No. 15 in the all-time series, with the Packers holding a 9-5 edge. The first of which was Super Bowl II, taking place on January 14, 1968, with the Packers winning 33-14. The 1970s were obviously dominated by the "Just Win Baby" Raider teams, then starting in 1990, the Packers haven't lost, winning 8 straight.

My favorite - and I'm likely not alone - matchup in this series took place on December 22, 2003 after the death of Brett Favre's father, Irv. It was an incredibly emotional scene leading up to that game. Would Brett play? You bet he would - there's no way his dad would have let him sit out. And play he did to the tune of a 41-7 victory. Everything went right for No. 4 in that game, with acrobatic touchdowns on throws that on a different night may have been picked. Touchdowns to Wesley Walls and Javon Walker from 22 and 23 yards, respectively, opened up the scoring. The Raiders cut the lead to 14-7 on a Charlie Garner run in the first quarter. The rest of the game was all Favre and the Packers -- in the second, Favre hit Walker again, this time for 43 yards, and David Martin for a 6-yarder just before the half.  With a 31-7 lead to open the third, the damage had already been done. A Ryan Longwell field goal and Ahman Green touchdown run in the fourth rounded out the scoring and the 41-7 victory.

It's far and away one of the great Brett Favre moments. All the emotion, all the gun-slinging, all the playmaking in a win the team needed to move to 9-6 on the season. Brett and his emotion always hit home with fans. He always wore his heart on his sleeve, and I think it was on our sleeves a bit too that night. Truly, an all-timer.

The Present

The Raiders, moving on from quarterback Derek Carr, landed Packer killer Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency. How this was supposed to be an improvement, I'm not really sure, but there was a little excitement to see what he could do with his former New England OC and now Raiders HC Josh McDaniels. They have the weapons - the aforementioned Davante Adams is still very much Tae - although maybe a little bit salty with the team's 1-3 and sluggish offensive start. After a holdout and return, running back Josh Jacobs hasn't made the impact anyone in Raider Nation had hoped, as Vegas rates as one of the worst run teams in the NFL. If there is ever a "stop the run" get-right game for Joe Barry and the Packers, it's this week, especially with Jimmy G's status in question after missing last week due to a concussion. Rookie Aidan McConnell started in his place and, well, played like a rookie 4th-rounder.

On the defensive side, Maxx Crosby remains one of the league's elite pass rushers. But what made their pass rush so strong was Crosby alongside Chandler Jones, who has since been released after weeks of disconcerting behavior and social media posts. The pass defense is middle of the pack, likely due to so many teams having success with the run against them. Remember that get-right-game? That goes for the Packers run game, too. Vegas is currently in the bottom third of the league in total rushing yards allowed.

The Future

Monday Night Football, 7:15 PM Lambeau Time, Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas. This is the Packers' first trip to the Big Roomba. The Raiders are looking to salvage the start of their season and not completely derail to a 1-4 start, while the Packers look to limp into the bye week at 3-2 with the sting of a tough national television loss tempered a bit. It's a very important game for both teams, so we should get both of their best efforts Monday Night.

If Green Bay is ever going to stop the run and make life easier for themselves, this is it. Vegas is putrid at running the ball, and the Packers, as we're keenly aware, are putrid at stopping it. What's going to give this week? We'll also need to monitor the injury report, which seems to have better news with the prospects of Elgton Jenkins and Jaire Alexander improving by the day. I wouldn't expect to see Eric Stokes just yet, who just returned to practice, but it's encouraging seeing him back. Nickel corner has been a tough position for Green Bay of late, so it'd be nice to get 21 back out there.

As for the offense, last week got away from them as we all saw. The ability to run the ball with a healthier Aaron Jones will be key, and we'll see if the offense can get off to a better start as a whole. I think there will be a strong focus on shorter throws to get Jordan Love into more of a rhythm. The ability to block up front will go a long way in helping that.

If nothing else, the uniforms will look beautiful on the football field. Two iconic franchises facing off once again, this time with a lot of early season momentum on the line. Can't wait to see how it shakes out.

Run the ball. Stop the run. One helps the passing game and the other helps the pass defense too.

Both very important for the development of the team going into the bye.

It’s looking more and more like the Packers have plenty of talent but due to poor coaching they are underperforming.

LaFleur has more wins in 4 years than any coach ever. This year, we're 2-2 in September. I'm not understanding why W/L isn't the appropriate measure for evaluating a coach.

Both teams have issues on their OL and on their DL. They have one elite rusher. They haven’t been able to run block at even a basic level. Both defenses are porous when run on. Which of the teams has an overall advantage?

Both teams have an elite RB if Jones is truly healthy. The Raiders have a truly elite receiver. We have by far the better CB starters if Jaire is healthy.

Jimmy G doesn’t throw deep but he gets the ball out fast and is pretty efficient short. Love does throw deep but mostly has been involved in longer developing plays and the Packers have issues with consistency from both throwers and catchers due to inexperience. Will Jimmy G pass the concussion protocol? If he doesn’t their backup was not ready last week, but I think he likely does play.

Health at key positions is definitely a factor, but these two teams have offsetting weaknesses. This could easily come down to which set of coaches does better.

"This could easily come down to which set of coaches does better."

Or which teams makes the least mistakes, i.e. penalties, turnovers.

IMO it's mainly about our O line, if they perform well , put one in the win column.

With both Myers and Newman being liabilities, will this coaching staff make the necessary changes? I doubt it.

Assuming the Packers get their players back, specifically Jones, Watson, Alexander and hopefully Jenkins the only way the Packers could lose this game is if they beat themselves with penalties, mistakes and turnovers.

The Packers should come out running with a heavy does of Jones assuming that he is 100% ready to go. Then play action to quick short and intermediate passes. Allow the OL to settle in and hold off on the long passes and slow developing routes until the OL demonstrates that they are playing solidly.

For the defense this should be a get right game for the run defense. Hopefully move away from only 2 DLs and move the DBs closer to the LOS. Set the the tone early that the Packers will stop the ground game. Garapolo does not throw long passes so there should be less concern for giving up the big play. Of course Davante Adams can still make a big play but if Garapolo doesn't play I think he becomes less of a factor.

This should be a game where the Packers are able to win both sides of the LOS. Get people blocked, run the ball and protect Love and the offense should be fine. On defense stop the run and pressure the QB. Hopefully build a lead and make the Radiers offense one dimensional and let loose the pass rush.
Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Looking at the Raiders (whom I still call Oakland as often as not) I see another thoroughly beatable team. It all depends on which Packer offense shows up.

On offense, the Raiders are weak. Garaoppolo remains out, and his back up has almost no experience and it shows. He's got Davante, but it seems to me he looks at other options first. Maybe I'm wrong. The o-line gives the rookie no help. No real running game. They manage a few plays or even a series once in a while, but they scare no one. If the Packer offense can stay on the field and make TOP reasonable, the Raiders shouldn't score much.

Their defensive line has a really good player in Crosby. He's very good at pressuring the QB and resembles a more likable Jared Allen, but he also plays the run pretty well. The rest of the line is a bunch of under performers. They give up yards.

This game is entirely on the Packers' offense. They should score on these guys, but after last week who knows what's going to happen? Ever the optimist, I predict a motivated Packer team wins 27-13 with Aaron Jones having a good game, though if Garapollo returns, it'll be a much closer game with a good show between Davante and Jaire.

I don't know about that. Get right for who? My first thought reading that was, Great Barry's just the cure all for Jacobs! God I hope not, this trend has to end this week.
