Packers Officially Activate QB Aaron Rodgers, Waive QB Joe Callahan

The Green Bay Packers finally made the call and brought quarterback Aaron Rodgers up to the active roster from the injured reserve; designated to return list on Saturday.

The move was expected either Friday or Saturday, according to coach Mike McCarthy, however, the Packers officially completed the transaction Saturday evening. It was reported the same morning by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Rodgers, 34, is returning to football after suffering a broken right collarbone in the Oct. 15 game against the Minnesota Vikings and was subsequently placed on injured reserve five days later. He had surgery on Oct. 19, which included having 13 screws and two plates inserted to help stabilize the bone and expedite the healing process with the intentions of returning this season.

Rodgers' target date was week 15 against the Carolina Panthers, and he was right on time.

As a result of elevating Rodgers to the active roster, the Packers also waived second-year quarterback Joe Callahan, who was originally promoted to the 53-man roster a day following Rodgers' injury.

Callahan first signed as an undrafted free agent by Green Bay after the 2016 NFL Draft and after an intriguing preseason, earned a spot on the Packers' active roster for the season opener, only to be released a month later.

After stints in New Orleans and Cleveland, Callahan found his way back to the Packers once again in December of last year in the midst of the Packers' "run the table" winning streak.

If Callahan passes through waivers unclaimed, which could be unlikely given his past popularity amongst other teams, the Packers could possibly bring him back to their practice squad. At the moment, Jerod Evans is the only quarterback on the practice squad.

The release of Callahan in favor of Rodgers may all but confirm the belief that Rodgers' collarbone certainly isn't going to be a worry down the stretch this season.

Sure hope Callahan has a short lease on his room at the Holiday Inn.

We'll find out if risking AR's health will be worth it. ---- He's cleared to play with the caveat that his throwing shoulder won't be 100% for months. --- Here's one for hoping his OL keeps him safe. -- If not, then even season 2018 may be in question.

Does anyone else think the Pack need major hierarchical changes and quick. -- A famous quote: --- What the hell is going on out there? (in GB)."

Joe isn't the long term answer as a back up. However, I do wish him well.
