Packers Have WR Succession Plan
Packers wide receiver Matthew Golden scores his first career touchdown in the playoffs loss to the Bears. Golden will be counted on more in 2026.

For the past three seasons Romeo Doubs has been Jordan Love’s favorite target in the passing game. This has been evident since his first start in 2023 when Doubs caught two of Love’s three touchdown passes. In Love’s four playoff starts, Doubs has been the team’s leading receiver in three of the four games.
| Year | Opponent | Rec | Yards | TD |
| 2023 | Dallas | 6 | 151 | 1 |
| 2023 | San Francisco | 4 | 83 | 0 |
| 2024 | Philadelphia | 2 | 13 | 0 |
| 2025 | Chicago | 8 | 124 | 1 |
However, in 2026 it is highly likely that Doubs will not be back in Green Bay, as he is an impending free agent. With the emergence in 2025 of Christian Watson as the team’s No. 1 wide receiver, the flashes of big plays from both of the third-year receivers Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks and the 2025 draft picks Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, there isn’t much room in the crowded receiver room.
This scenario does feel similar to when James Jones was a free agent in 2011 and the Packers had just drafted Randall Cobb, which meant Jones would be long gone in free agency. In 2011 there was the player lockout, which meant the NFL Draft was before free agency, which resulted in Jones signing a team-friendly deal after he did not get a big offer from another team. Jones did make the Packers geniuses in keeping him after he led the NFL in touchdown catches in 2012.
But in 2026, the NFL is not coming off a lockout and the salary cap is exploding which means it is more likely Doubs gets a yearly salary that is more than what Watson signed his extension for last September.
When Brian Gutekunst drafted Golden in the first round last April he planned ahead for when Watson, Doubs, Reed and Wicks would all be off their rookie deals by the 2027 offseason. Gutekunst could try to package Reed or Wicks in a trade and prioritizing keeping his quarterback’s favorite target, and also ensuring Golden sees the field much more often than he did last season.
Moving on with Golden in the top 3 wide receivers with Watson and Reed and letting Doubs leave in free agency seems like much more of a “Packer Way” of handling the wide receiver position this offseason.
Golden had 29 catches for 361 yards last season, which is disappointing for a rookie first round pick, but in Green Bay that is part of the development that comes with being a rookie wide receiver.
Golden’s first year stacks comparably with the second round wide receivers that were all drafted by Ted Thompson. From 2006 to 2014, Thompson drafted Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Cobb and Davante Adams in round 2. Gutekunst drafted two wide receivers in Round 2: Watson and Reed.
Packers 1st & 2nd Round WRs since 2006 - Rookie Seasons
| Year | Player | Rec | Yards | TDs |
| 2006 | Greg Jennings | 45 | 632 | 3 |
| 2008 | Jordy Nelson | 33 | 366 | 2 |
| 2011 | Randall Cobb | 25 | 375 | 1 |
| 2014 | Davante Adams | 38 | 446 | 3 |
| 2022 | Christian Watson | 41 | 611 | 7 |
| 2023 | Jayden Reed | 64 | 793 | 8 |
| 2025 | Matthew Golden | 29 | 361 | 0 |
Golden had just one touchdown catch last season, which came in the playoff loss to the Bears. Adams had a similar rookie season and it included a breakout in the playoff win over the Cowboys where he had 6 catches for 117 yards and a 46-uard touchdown.
The Packers had planned on Adams taking a second-year jump but an early-season ankle injury delayed Adams’ breakout until 2016.
As for 2026, the second-year jump from Golden to go along with the hope for good health from Reed, Watson and Wicks, should give the Packers a dynamic group at receiver and to be able withstand the loss of its leader in yards and catches in the last four seasons.

Doubs is projected to get $12-16 million on the open market, which is what Watson will be getting in 2027, maybe more. We can't afford Doubs and will welcome the comp pick.
GB is loaded after drafting 2 WRs last year but I would try to sign FA Skyy Moore-WR/ KR. We need a KR badly and Moore is an excellent one. He also is very fast and has great hands. He was a 2nd round pick of the Chiefs 4 years ago and he was traded to the Giants last year. I don't know why his Chiefs tenure ended up not working, but he is still really young and maybe needs a fresh start. The KR skills are paramount, but the solid WR skills are a bonus. In the 2021 draft Moore was said to have some of the best hands of any WRs. And he is only projected to get a vet minimum contract.

I liked Skyy Moore when he came out for the draft in 2022. His strong points were speed, suddenness, huge hands and only 7 drops while in college. He has solid weight for being 5'10. 95 catches for 1292 yards & 10 TDs his last year @ W Michigan. I was really surprised that he flamed out in KC and was traded.
Sometimes a fresh start is needed. Being traded to the Giants was no bargain though. We need a KR which Moore is excellent at. The bonus is he was a very good WR in college and maybe that comes back, it's not like his hands fell off. Maybe the pressure was too much in KC. Mahomes is the best right now so that Skyy failed there is perplexing.
Bottom line is he is cheap, projected $1-1.5 million, and he is a great returner, WR would be a cherry on top.

We do not need any more small WRs. We need a block capable route technician to replace Doubs in the LaFleur system. That’s not Reed and may not be Golden. It’s sure as hell not Moore. We are going to have to figure out how to fully utilize Golden and Reed as it is, or dramatically change the offensive design. 2 sub 6’ 190 WRs plus Melton is more than enough for one roster.
Now, if we’ve finally seen value as a returner, then that’s a game changer. We could have easily kept Hardman over 4TEs last year. We could keep an extra returner (WR or whatever position). However I don’t see that looking likely. LaFleur doesn’t seem interested in carrying one on game day and I don’t see Moore changing that given Reed, Golden and Melton (who will be active for STs).
Perhaps if we trade Reed, that may change. I’m still not convinced that isn’t an option and Golden’s best usage. In that case, Moore would become a much more interesting option.

Should we throw Josh Jacob out there again to return kicks this year? A good kick returner flips the field similar to a good punter. There are a lot more opportunities for returns since all the teams are trying to pooch it around the goal line.
For the price, Moore is worth the flyer, he could probably beat out Wicks. After dropping only 7 passes in college, he didn't just forget how to do it. Reed could very well be a trade candidate before he is scheduled to receive a $20 million a year contract. I agree then Moore becomes very interesting for $1-1.5 million per year.

I remember watching Cobb play in college and just thinking of how nice it would be to see him as a Packer. I figured there was no chance of seeing that due to the Packers not needing a receiver. Oh how did TT surprise me when he did.

WOW!!
Random thoughts.....
I'm not sure how Watson got elevated to WR#1 in 2025, but....ok
Being a #1 receiver in Green Bay lately, is not what other teams or history, deems, what a WR#1 is.
He's only #1....in Green Bay.
And that was actually Doubs, but i'm nit picking.
**********
Comparing past rookie wr's to todays rookie wide receivers is fine, except for one caveat.
In the TT era, When rookies got drafted, they had to earn their targets behind productive established veteran receivers.
It took time.
Post Adams...the #1 wr claim was wide open... 'anyone's' for the taking, because they are all young.
And it's still anyone's, since then
In the Gute era, he's drafted 12 wr's, in two phases.
3 receivers in 2018..non of which amounted to much in this league
The latest being Doubs, Watson, Wicks, Reed.
More recent, Golden and Williams.
My point being, post Davante, it was an open competition for a star or two to emerge.
It was anyone's, who wanted it.
Has that happened?
Some think Watson is that star.
My idea of a number #1 receiver, is someone with a lot more than a career high of 66 targets.
But maybe i'm just old school, or a realist...idk.
Just for fun......If Adams was on the Packers this season, with his 2025 stats of 789 yards and 14 TD's.
Adams would be the Packers #1 WR.
The Rams got one hell of a bargain deal signing Adams.
I said at the time i wanted the Packers to sign him, but that bridge might have been burnt, not sure.
McLaughlin wrote this article with the premise that the Packers receiving core is the cats ass.
Well.............idk man
Somebody's got to show me something more than what i've seen.
Do the Packers have a leader in the wr room?....idk, i haven't seen one yet.
I guess like everyone, i'll have to wait and see what Gute's roster gives us.
Like i've been doing since 2018.
Btw...if Doubs goes to another team, don't be too shocked if he does well.
Not necessarily a #1, but i can see him as a strong #2.
*********
Here we go, lol...a thumbs down without a thought in his brain to post a reply.
Maybe i should call them, 'Special'.
Yea, that sounds P. C.

Good Post 75
I’m not so sure we had a true number 1 for the last two SB victories.
Personally I think we’re better off not having one. When it was definitely Adams we looked lost when the playoffs came and we had to go somewhere else.
The same people that are touting Watson wanted to run him out of town even though he was on a cheap rookie deal. Now he’s what exactly? IDK.
Doubs had moments too, but I would be worried about another head injury with him.
Reed, Wicks, Williams, Golden and Watson - is that good enough? Beats me.
I don’t think we need a number one we just need 4-5 guys that are 2-3 and can block.
If we just had a GM that was better at drafting that would be awesome.
Gute needs a Great Draft

That could be debated.
But i know one thing for damn sure, we need more leaders on this team, and in the wr room.
I haven't seen a leader since Adams, and before him Nelson.
Who both, also happened to be strong #'1's so 🤷♂️
************
It's still wide open, and season 4 post Adams....
Anyone wanna step up?
Did you raise your hand Christian?
Well....stay healthy for a season, and rank better than 58th in yards.

Thumbs down....i know, i know.....
Life is hard. God loves you.

I doubt the packers would have drafted Golden.

Had Doubs and others;
Not dropped so many the previous year.
The fumble on the on side Kick.
Was just another nail.
Not to pay him.

I doubt they would have drafted a WR in first round if the draft wasn't in Green Bay...a play for the home town crowd was part of that pick...and then MLF wouldn't use the kid...

It's possible that the only reason the Packers chose a WR in the first round of the 2025 draft is because it was Matthew Golden.
Maybe they liked him that much.
I don't know. It's just a thought.
Perhaps the Packers really liked Savion Williams so much that they stretched for him a bit in round three.
I like what I saw from both of them last season.
The catches that Golden did make often seemed to be big catches. Plus, his TD against the Bears in crunch time was off the charts as a highlight. Wow!
Williams seemed to show some promise of elusiveness in kick returns and running sweeps.
Both of them seem like real competitors with tons of talent.
If the Packers think so, maybe they can trade Reed or Wicks for a cornerback or a defensive lineman of similar quality -- taking from our surplus at one position to plug a big hole at another.
P.S.
In any case, if we think more about all of the good players the Packers already have, and hope for the good players the Packers may obtain in the draft and free agency; then we may be more excited about our prospects for next season.
With some health and synchronicity on the offensive line, our offense of 2026 could be truly prolific.
While keeping the running game as integral, perhaps LaFleur opens up the passing game a little more for high flying fun and more wins.

Exactly. Feels good. But not the Packers MO, even down to not fitting the prototypical WR size-weight metric. Other prospects' greater impacts not considered.

"Golden will be counted on more...." Thankfully we don't have a choice. While some consider Watson our number one, we need a dynamic, high-volume receiver who can consistently move the chains AND make splash plays on his own without the perfect play call. He should be able to put up big numbers now that the "succession plan" is out of the way.

Like Cobb!
Coldworld
February 18, 2026 at 10:00 am
When Cobb was drafted he was seen as more of a slot/runner/gadget. His early showing as a WR was not predicted. In college the majority of his routes consisted of underneath patterns such as drags, outs, and slants. He often lined up at quarterback and running back. His routes were simple and sloppy and he was not seen as a true receiver at that point.
He arrived in camp and it was clear immediately that he had transformed his route technique. He was simply far better than his film or his college usage rationally suggested as a WR and still retained his ability to make plays in space or ball in hand. He essentially forced his way into the rotation by play on arrival.
He was thicker built and far more physical than Golden. He was a steal because his immediate proficiency as a true WR far surpassed expectations and that was down to him working to remedy his known weakness. Great drive and attitude.

Love will continue to have plenty of weapons to work with. I just wish the passing attack was a little more consistent. There are times they look unstoppable and others times they can't seem to get out of their own way. Coaching or players, I don't know, but there is enough talent there they should be more consistent.
And yes I know the OL wasn't great last year, but what happened to short passes to running backs that outflank the rush? MLF seems to have lost those pages from his playbook.

I know they like Wicks, but I would not be shocked if they move on from Wicks and Doubs. I would love to see Doubs back, howeer his concussion history makes it a questionable economic decision to bring him back. Wicks' ankle is a concern. Those can be lingering injuries depending on the medical diagnosis. What I believe they need is for Lloyd to come back or get a scat back in the draft and add a blocking tight end. I would attempt to trade Musgrave for draft capital.
Their receiving corp is fine without Doubs and/or Wicks.

Wicks isn't big money yet.
He doesn't have the speed of Donald Driver.
But small things will keep him in GB.

Wicks has to stay healthy. He actually looked really good in the one game he was last year. He needs not to revert to the dropsies as well, of course. If he is healthy, he has elite separation ability.
If he has learned route precision (predictability for the QB) not just raw ability to separate, then he might be replacing Doubs as a starter next year. He’s bigger and a better blocker than Golden and long speed is not as important in that role (think Adams) in a LaFleur O as the ability to beat press and get open as an outlet.

I thought the injury to Jayden Reed, combined with Dontayvion Wicks' injuries, actually inhibited Matthew Golden's development because he was then moved into the slot. Although he is a small receiver, he seems more at home on the outside, for whatever reason. I'm looking forward to seeing Golden, Christian Watson, and Jayden Reed on the field together next year, with plenty of Dontayvion Wicks mixed in. Honestly, I still don't know what to make of Savion Williams. I am still scratching my head about that draft pick.

Reed, and Wicks, and Watson, will be in their contract year this year. I would submit that irrespective of their skill and ability, it's about production and that means staying on the field. Everything else is going to be secondary to that.
That means if we do not resign Doubs this year, or Reed/Watson/Wicks next year, then our WR group could be Golden and Williams.
For 2026, the best group of WRs we can put on the field, IMO, would include Dobbs, Watson, and Reed, with Golden rotating in . When somebody gets hurt, I'd use Savion Williams to replace his snaps.
But I don't think that's going to happen. I suspect the 1265 brass will elect to use the money it would take to keep Doubs and use it on making a thicker Oline. We don't throw it that much, we do throw it to the TEs and RBs, and I think we can consistently put 3 good WRs on the field without him this year.
Tedlyflyfisher

I think Watson and Reed will be the top 2 dogs in 2026.
FWIW I think it would be a shame to lose Doubs. Look at the stats: he was Mr. Clutch on 3rd downs. Yes, the muffed onside kick was a huge mistake. Isn’t it nice that you guys never make mistakes, lol! But I get that there’s never enough money to sign everyone.
I am not sold on Wicks. Maybe he’ll explode this year, we’ll see. As far as Golden goes, I see guys predicting huge things for him, but most of his catches this year were on short patterns. I thought he was supposed to be a speed demon. So why weren’t he and Watson both going deep at the same time. THAT would make a defense nervous.
Savion Williams is intruiging. Obviously we need to see him stay healthy for an entire season. I don’t know if our defense will still feel they need Bo Melton, but I have to admit I hope they do. He’s certainly has come through at crucial times. My fellow old men will appreciate it when I say “Bo knows football!”

My only concern about letting Doubs go is that he is a dependable possession receiver for us. In that way, we don't have anyone who truly fits that role. If we can find a similar player in FA for the right price, then I would not be as concerned.
Matt
February 18, 2026 at 12:31 pm
I like Doubs, he had his moments, but in my opinion he is closer to be easily replacable than $15 mln player. Watson is a different animal. We can talk about his injuries but on the field he is a difference maker. With Golden and Williams in their year 2 I would spend that money somewhere else.
