Packers Game 8 Recap l Packers 30 Jaguars 27
The Packers win their sixth game of the year behind a stout running performance by Josh Jacobs.
On a hot autumn afternoon in Jacksonville FL, Green Bay was able to overcome losing QB Jordan Love to injury with RB Josh Jacobs putting the team on his back finishing with 127 YD on 25 CAR with 2 TD. TE Tucker Kraft lead the team in receiving yards with 78 on three catches and the Packers' defense was able to create two timely turnovers capitalizing with scoring drives. K Brandon McManus went 3/3 on XP and 3/3 on FG including his second straight game winning kick. In case you missed it, here is the recap:
GB received and started at their own 30 with the first play from scrimmage being a misdirect pass to WR Christian Watson for a 6-yard gain. GB was able to push into JAX territory after a TE Kraft completion and RB Jacobs 7-yard run. On third-and-3, a Jacobs big gain was negated by a holding penalty by G Sean Rhyan. Packers were forced to punt after another holding penalty (declined) and a limping QB Love.
JAX started their first drive at their own 17. The GB defense was able to bring pressure on second and third down as LB Wilson wrapped up a scrambling QB Trevor Lawrence holding JAX to a three-and-out. P Logan Cooke kicked a 74-yard punt that bounced out of bounds to the GB half-yard line. After a couple of RB Jacobs runs setting up third-and-5, a reaching WR Jayden Reed was unable to hold on to the ball as GB was forced to punt on a three-and-out. QB Love went to the medical ten (precaution).
Starting at midfield, JAX found themselves at another third-and-3 but got pushed back 5-yards after a false start. The GB defense had tight man coverage as CB Eric Stokes' stout defense forced a QB Lawrence bad throw leading to another JAX punt. On first-and-10, QB Love found WR Doubs for a 31-yard completion to the GB 39. QB Love found WR Doubs again this time for 8-yards as the GB offense started to click. On third-and-5, QB Love found WR Watson on a diving catch for the first down at the JAX 22. The last play of the first quarter was a short completion to Jayden Reed setting up third-and-8 as the score was GB 0 JAX 0.
Second Quarter: Packers 0 Jaguars 0
GB was given the first down after a QB Love to RB Chris Brooks completion with an illegal hands to the face penalty called on JAX. On a pass intended for WR Doubs, QB Love was picked off by CB Jarrion Jones throwing his league-leading 9th interception. On second-and-12, S Xavier McKinney intercepted QB Lawrence for the defender's league-leading sixth interception at the JAX 28 yard-line. A defensive pass interference call set up the Packers on the JAX 3 yard-line leading to a RB Jacobs touchdown. K McManus made the extra point as the Packers took the lead GB 7 JAX 0 with 11:31 left in the second quarter.
The GB defense continued to look sharp stopping a couple of RB Tank Bigsby runs forcing another third down. QB Lawrence completed a screen pass to RB Bigsby, but the Packers D created a 3-man barrier attack for no gain giving JAX another three-and-out and punt on the drive. On second-and-six at the GB 24, QB Love found a wide open TE Kraft who hustled after the catch for a 67-yard gain. After a GB illegal shift pushed them back to the JAX 14, the Jaguars were able to hold the Packers to 31-yard field goal attempt by K McManus. The kick was good bringing the score to GB 10 JAX 0 with 6:03 left in the second quarter.
JAX started their fifth drive still without gaining a first down as the yard comparison was GB 186 JAX 24. QB Lawrence completed a 37-yard pass to WR Christian Kirk getting tackled at the GB 37. A 17-yard catch-and-run by rookie WR Brian Thomas Jr. brought JAX into the GB red zone. On second-and-goal, QB Lawrence kept the ball to himself breaking a tackle and finding the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown run. K Cam Little made the extra point as the Jaguars cut the score to GB 10 JAX 7 with 2:37 left in the second quarter.
On first-and-10 at the GB 30, QB Love found a slanting WR Watson for a first down 12-yard gain before letting the clock run down to the two minute warning. QB Love completed a pass WR Doubs again for a big gain on a beautiful two-handed grab to the JAX 33 yard-line. On third-and-5 after GB used their second timeout with 1:18 left, QB Love was forced out of the pocket throwing an incompletion. GB was given the first down after a bizarre delay of game penalty was charged to JAX on a field goal attempt giving GB a first down. However, the GB offense was stalled after a couple of QB Love incompletions leading to a successful K McManus 38-yard field goal attempt. GB 13 JAX 7 with 54 seconds left in the second quarter.
With one timeout remaining, JAX was able to move the ball down field efficiently on the soft Packers coverage to the GB 21 with 16 seconds left after back-to-back QB Lawrence long throws. K Little nailed a 39-yard field goal kick giving JAX points before halftime. GB 13 JAX 10 at the end of the first half.
Third Quarter: Packers 13 Jaguars 10
JAX started the second half with back-to-back RB Bigsby runs setting up third-and-2. The GB defense got a big stop making QB Lawrence uncomfortable in the pocket with a rushed incomplete pass forcing their fifth three-and-out of the game. After a touchback gave GB possession at their own 20, QB Love completed a 14-yard pass to WR Watson. On a short pass for a 2-yard loss to RB Jacobs, QB Love was hit re-aggravating what looked like his knee (later was ruled a groin injury) limping to the sideline before falling down to the ground. QB Malik Willis was brought in on third-and-9 and was stopped 4-yards short of the first down on a scramble forcing GB to punt.
As the JAX offense continued to pick of the pace into GB territory, HC Matt Lafleur used a challenge that was unsuccessful on a RB Bigsby non-fumble. On third-and-1 at the GB 48, rookie LB Edgerrin Cooper made his presence felt with a huge tackle on RB Bigsby for the stop. JAX went for it on fourth down as QB Lawrence sneaked over the line for the first down. QB Lawrence continued to hit the GB defense with explosive plays after a 19-yard completion to WR Kirk. On second-and-5 at the GB 14, QB Lawrence completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to WR Thomas Jr. giving JAX the lead. The extra point was good bringing the score to JAX 17 GB 13 with 5:10 left in the third quarter.
The GB O-line continued to push the pile with five straight positive runs from the offense setting up third-and-4. QB Willis was able to complete his first pass attempt to WR Dontayvion Wicks for the first down. After a 20-yard run by QB Willis to the JAX 38, RB Jacobs found a hole up the middle and turned on the motor with a nasty juke for his longest rushing touchdown of the year. K McManus made the extra point giving the Packers the lead GB 20 JAX 17 with 21 seconds left in the third quarter.
RB Bigsby 4-yard run was the last play of the third quarter setting up second-and-6 at the JAX 15.
Fourth Quarter: Packers 20 Jagaurs 17
On third-and-6, LB Cooper brought the pressure causing a strip-sack as the QB Lawrence fumble was recovered by a diving DL Devonte Wyatt at the JAX 5-yard line. On second-and-goal at the JAX 3, QB Willis threw a short pass to TE Kraft who happily walked into the end zone for the touchdown (happy National Tight Ends Day). K McManus made the extra point as the Packers lead increased to GB 27 JAX 17 with 14:06 left in the fourth quarter. Needing to get some points, JAX started their drive with a 2-yard loss as the monster DE Lukas Van Ness met RB Bigsby with a hard hit. On third-and-12, QB Lawrence hit WR Kirk stride-for-stride but the ball was knocked out by LB Cooper for an incomplete pass. JAX punted to the GB 24-yard line for their sixth three-and-out of the afternoon. RB Jacobs continued to pound on the ground with three straight hand offs gaining 22-yards. After WR Doubs dropped a heater off his hands and an RB Wilson screen was stopped, P Daniel Whelan punted 37-yards to the GB 20. QB Lawrence hit TE Brenton Strange for 21-yards then RB Bigsby ran 14-yards bringing the ball into GB territory at the 34-yard line. The Packers defense was able to force a fourth down after stopping a screen to RB Bigsby followed by a pour snap fumble in shotgun formation recovered by QB Lawrence leading to a successful 47-yard field goal attempt by K Cooke. GB 27 JAX 20 with 5:36 left in the fourth quarter.
The GB offense looked to milk the clock as a couple of RB Jacobs runs set up third-and-7. QB Willis was sacked in the pocket keeping the clock running as GB was forced to punt. JAX offense started at their own 13, but was able to pick up the first down on an 11-yard catch by TE Evan Engram. QB Lawrence completed a short pass that turned into a 20-yard gain to RB D'Ernest Johnson bringing the ball to the GB 40. The final play before the two minute warning was a 21-yard completion by QB Lawrence to TE Engram to the GB 14. On second-and-10, QB Lawrence threw a perfect pass to a leaping TE Engram overcoming the GB triple coverage for the 14-yard touchdown. K Cooke hit the extra point as the score was now tied GB 27 JAX 27 with 1:48 left in the fourth quarter.
On second-and-6, QB Willis found a wide open WR Reed for a timely 49-yard gain running all the way to the JAX 17 before getting pushed out of bounds. RB Jacobs was limping off the field after a 3-yard gain as JAX used their second timeout with 59 seconds left. After forcing JAX to use their final timeout, GB let the clock tick down to two seconds before bringing out K McManus who nailed a 24-yard kick as time expired giving the Packers their fourth straight win. Final score was GB 30 JAX 27.
The Packers will play their division rival the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field next Sunday at 3:25 CT for a battle of first place in the NFC North.

Six three and outs? And a takeaway? That's not bad. But surrendering 27 points isn't good, either.
We held Jacksonville, on their homefield, to 10 points in the first half, and 10 points in the second half, prior to their last drive. It covered 87 yards and every play was a pass. Do we get bonus points for stuffing the run on that drive? No, of course not.

They got bonus points for our failure to stop the pass.

Lawrence played very well. It sure would be nice to still have Rasul Douglas on this team.

I'm not quite sure why you steadfastly refuse to acknowledge stopping the run is an important part of sound defense.
You know better. Or, maybe you don't? But I'm fairly sure you do.
If you can't stop the ground game with seven men in the box, there's two scenarios that unfold: You allow your opponent to dictate the pace of the game, demoralize and tire your defense, and control the clock- all of which are unacceptable outcomes.. or you have to start cheating up your DBs and/or commit an 8th man to the box, start subbing in an extra LB for a DB, etc and so forth, in attempts to stop the run and get off the field.
The issue is that by doing so, you have fundamentally weakened the back end of the defense and are now primed to bleed yardage to the passing game.
You stop the run to stop the pass. You know this.

I see, the defense isn't demoralized when a team marches down the field completing 7 passes on their way to the end zone. Neither are they tired. Good to know.

If you've played any defense, you'll understand the difference.
This isn't subjective. It's a physical toll taken on players defending the run.

Willis has turned into a good 2nd qb. Love's injuries are concerning.
But I did not like what I saw from our D today. Secondary looked awful. Like a Barry prevent Secondary all day. Not much pressure up front. Thank god the LBs played well. I'd sure like to see another good CB and/or DE on this team before the trade deadline. GPG

"GB was given the first down after a bizarre delay of game penalty was charged to JAX on a field goal attempt giving GB a first down."
I was relying on Wayne and Larry today, and they were baffled by this call as well. What did the mighty Jaguars do to earn such a bizarre and unexplained penalty? Anyone?

I saw it and don't understand why they call it delay of game, it was something entirely different but I expect they used correct verbiage. I imagine somebody's going to analyze it via replay and post that to YouTube, it would be nice if we could get that here ...

They explained it on the TV broadcast with their rules expert Mike Pereira. The Jags shifted their defense just before the ball was snapped. This is a foul, presumably because it is distracting to the kicking team. Calling it delay of game is a misnomer, I think. Maybe they should call it an illegal shift on the defense.

Good teams find a way to win. Bad teams find a way to lose. Look at the Chiefs. They are barely beating their opponents, but are unbeaten. The Vikings, on the other hand, started out hot, but have cooled off considerably. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Win the game. Period. Then get hot for the playoffs, and see what happens.
