Packers Game 3 Recap | Packers 30 Titans 14

The Green Bay Packers prevail in a dominant display of defense defeating the Tennessee Titans 30-14.

This may not have been a revenge game for QB Malik Willis, but he played like he had a chip on his shoulder throwing 13/19 for 202 yards and a touchdown adding a team lead-rushing 73 yards on six attempts and a touchdown. DC Jeff Hafley prepared his best game so far as the Packers’ defense caused four turnovers and eight sacks, the most since January 2005. Another impressive game plan by HC Matt Lafleur has the Packers 2-1 and on a two-game winning streak with their leader QB Jordan Love sidelined for the second consecutive game. In case you missed it, here is the recap:

First Quarter: Packers' preparation displays a confident Willis.

Packers received the ball and on the very first play, Willis in shotgun formation fakes the hand-off to RB Josh Jacobs finding an open WR Jayden Reed for a 30-yard gain After a Jacobs 4-yard gain, on third-and-6, Willis finds Watson for the second 30-yard gain of the drive on a jump-ball grab setting up first-and-goal. On second-and-goal, Willis fakes the hand-off to Jacobs and on a nice juke-move QB sneak scored a 5-yard touchdown. K Brayden Narveson made the extra point giving Packers a 7-0 lead with 12:25 left in the first quarter.

QB Will Levis, looking for a bounce back game, and the Titans started at their own 30. First play Levis had plenty of time in the pocket and found TE Josh Whyle for 23-yard gain. On Second-and-2, RB Tony Pollard picked up the first down gain. Levis continued to look poised in the pocket completing a long third-and-9 to new Titans WR Tyler Boyd for a 20-yard gain on the GB 15. Packers had a chance for a pick off of McKinney’s hands on a tipped ball which step up third-and-8 sack by Gary. However, a neutral zone infraction by veteran DT Preston Smith gave the Titans the chance setting up a first-and-goal at the one. Levis found a wide-open TE Nick Vannett in the back of the end zone for the Touchdown. K Nick Folk made the extra point as the Titans tied the game 7-7 with 7:15 left in the first quarter.

Packers started their second drive on the Titans 30 as Willis found Reed on a second-and-10 with a quick pass for a 8-yard gain . On third-and-2, Willis rolled out keeping the ball for himself gaining 30 yards for the first down. On third-and-7, RB Emmanuel Wilson had a key block opening up a lane for Willis to run 8 yards for the first down. Lafleur smartly continued calling the Willis run game with a 29-yard game setting up first-and-goal. After a couple Jacobs runs that were stuffed at the line, Packers found themselves at third-and-goal with an incomplete pass to Reed. Narveson nailed the 21-yard field goal giving the Packers a 10-7 lead with 1:05 left in the first quarter. At this point, Willis had four passing attempts for 72 yards and four rushing attempts for 62 yards. After a rare kickoff return was guarded well by the Packers special teams, Levis attempted a throw on first-and-10 to WR DeAndre Hopkins which was picked off by CB Jaire Alexander for a pick-6 (Wow, what a pick!). Narveson made the extra point giving the Packers a 17-7 lead. Titans had a chance for one more play before the quarter ended, but another neutral infraction this time by DT Kenny Clark gave the Titans the first down keeping the clock running until the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter: Packers 17 Colts 7

On a second-and-9, LB Isaiah McDuffie makes a beautiful open field tackle for only a 1-yard gain. GB defense is able to contain a Levis scramble forcing a fourth down and Titans punt. Packers started their third drive at the GB 18. On the first play, Willis completed to TE Tucker Kraft who broke a tackle and picked up a 21-yard gain. Wilson picked up the ground game gaining back-to-back big gains, but after an untimely sack for a 9-yard loss, the Packers found themselves at third-and-15. A RB screen to Wilson was not enough as P Daniel Whelan made his first appearance punting a touchback. With 8:19 remaining in the second quarter, Titans started off with a run to Tyjae Spears as the Packers defensive line stopped him for a 1-yard gain. After a short completion to Hopkins, the Packers brought pressure on third down as Lukas Van Ness sacked Levis for a 3-yard loss forcing the Titans to punt. The Packers started their forth drive at the GB 25 and it took until 5:57 left in the second quarter for the Packers’ to commit their first offensive holding penalty. Willis was not phased by the penalty as he continued to look confident on third down finding WR Romeo Doubs for a clutch first down on third-and-14. Willis in shotgun handed the ball to Reed for a 15-yard gain continuing to move the chains with the run game. Another positive Jacobs run was negated by an illegal shift on WR Bo Melton setting up first-and-10 at the TEN 47 running the clock to the two-minute warning. Penalties continued to plague the Packers' drive as a hands-to-the-face foul is committed by LT Rasheed Walker setting up second-and-23. Willis found Jacobs on a quick pass for a 5-yard gain setting up another Packers long third down as Willis found Watson for a 37-yard completion at the TEN 13. Willis scrambled on second-and-10 for a 7-yard gain as the Packers let the clock wind down to 25 seconds remaining before using their second timeout. Willis got sacked on third down setting up a successful Narveson 26-yard field goal attempt ending the second quarter. Packers 20 Titans 7. Packers had 266 total yards compared to the Titans' 79 as Willis finished with 71 rushing yards in the first half, the most for a Packers QB since 1991.

3rd Quarter: Packers 20 Titans 7

Titans started the second half on the GB 15 after a holding penalty on the kickoff return. Levis on a second-and-2 connected with Hopkins for the short first down yardage. On a four-man rush, DL Devonte Wyatt got the sack for a 5-yard loss. Levis throws a completion for a gain of 12 on third-and-14 as Titans HC Brian Callahan uses his first first timeout deciding to go for it on fourth-and-2 at their own 37. On a roll out by Willis, LBs Quay Walker and McDuffie made a perfect read containing Willis and getting the sack forcing a turnover on downs. Packers hand the ball to Jacobs on the first play for a 5-yard gain (hey, no penalty!) Unfortunately, the next play is a hand-off to Jacobs that gets called for a holding erasing a first down. After short completions to Reed on second and third down, Narveson missed a 48-yard field goal attempt. However, Titans DT Jeffery Simmons bailed out the Packers with a rare defensive holding call on a field goal giving the Packers the first down. On second-and-15, Willis finds Wilson on a RB screen with fantastic blocking by the O-line running into the end zone almost untouched for  for 30-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt is good and the Packers lead 27-7 with 8:25 left in the third quarter. It was Wilson’s first career touchdown.

The Packers’ sturdy defense gave up a big play on a RB screen to Spears for a 29-yard gain. Hopkins got open in the middle past the secondary as Levis completed a 15-yard gain. On third-and-1 at the GB 12, Levis pulled off a QB sneak for a first down gain. Seemed like GB defense went into autopilot mode as the next play, Levis found Hopkins for an 11-yard touchdown pass (bad tackling). Folk made the extra point as the score was Packers 27 Titans 14 with 4:55 left in the third quarter. GB started the next drive at the TEN 30 with Jacobs getting the ball for positive short-yard gains. On third-and-3, the Titans defense was able to swarm on Jacobs forcing the Packers’ first three-and-out of the game. A booming punt by Whelan was erased by another silly Packers' penalty, and instead of TEN starting at their own 10 the next punt is returned to the 30. Titans continued to put their trust in Levis as the first play was a 19-yard completion to Hopkins. Since the pick-6, Levis was 11/12 for 118 yards passing. On a second-and-10, Packers LB Kingsley Enagbare made an ankle-breaking move for a strip-sack recovered by the monster Van Ness forcing another Levis turnover (third of the day). Packers run the ball to Wilson for a 7-yard gain concluding the third quarter.

4th Quarter- Packers 27 Titans 14

After a 3-yard pass to Kraft for Willis’ 13th completion of the game (surpassing last week’s total of 12), the Packers found themselves at fourth-and-6 attempting to get the Titans defense to jump offsides. Packers took the delay-of-game as Whelan's punt put the Titans at their own 21. On second-and-7, the Packers brought a blitz pressuring Levis to throw an incomplete long pass to Treylon Burks. The Packers brought an all-out-blitz on third down as Enagbare, Smith, and Gary all put a hit on Levis forcing an 11-yard sack. Titans’ P Ryan Stonehouse punted the ball 51-yards giving the Packers possession at the GB 32 with 9:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.

On second-and-5, Willis threw a dart to Kraft who couldn't hang on for the Packers’ first drop of the afternoon. Titans brought pressure on third down as Willis threw a deep incompletion intended for WR Dontayvion Wicks forcing a Whelan punt resulting in a touchback. On second-and-8, Levis faked the hand-off in shotgun as the pocket collapsed giving Wyatt another sack on the day. Packers brought pressure with rookie LB Edgerrin Cooper getting the sack causing a fourth-and-24 and a Titans punt. As the clock ticked past the 6-minute mark, Willis handed the ball of to Wilson for a positive gain then back to Jacobs for another first down utilizing the dynamic RB duo. Another Packers’s holding penalty, this time on LT Elgin Jenkins, negated a Jacobs big first down gain. Packers kept the clock running with Wilson back-to-back runs forcing TEN to use their second timeout with 3:38 remaining. An incomplete third down throw to Reed gave Narveson a chance at redemption with a 47-yard field goal attempt that went through the upright. Packers lead 30-14 with 3:29 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Levis and the Titans offense came out with the hurry-up offense, but Smith put a halt on any momentum with a sack for a 7-yard loss. Levis on third down threw a jump ball Hail Mary that got picked off by S Xavier McKinney, his third INT in three games this season shutting down any hope of a Titans comeback. Packers forced the Titans to use their final timeout running the clock down to 1:07 before punting out-of-bounds to the TEN 27. CB Eric Stokes made a nice in-bounds tackle keeping the clock running. On the final play, Levis completed to Boyd for the first down as time expired. Packers win 30-14 and will face the 3-0 division rival Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field next Sunday at 12:00 PM CT.

Let's be honest for a moment. Many people still need help with their vs. there vs. they're, misuse quotation marks, and don't understand how contractions vary from possessives.

Didn't like the the Titans DT Jeffery Simmons bailing out the Packers-
Too technical - with a rare defensive holding call on a *field goal.*
Yes- it gave the Packers the first down.
Still- seems the refs screwed Tenn.
Making it easier for GB.

I did enjoy the victory.
Really another great coaching job.
But let them play-
I Felt it was a make up call for slamming Reed down.
And not calling it.

First off, my bias: I think Tennessee is one of the weaker teams we're going to face, and I think the Packers are a playoff team.

Second: There was an interesting graphic put up on the screen contrasting what Willis' numbers were as a Titan, and what he has done with Green Bay. According to the chart, Willis got twice as good just by putting on a Packers uniform. It's enough to make somebody reflect on the advantage the Green Bay organization, especially with QBs. You put a good team around them and make certain they are protected.

Third: Willis, IMO, is exactly what you'd like as a backup....he can run, but most importantly, he protects the ball. Yes, he doesn't see guys who are open, but he doesn't throw it up for grabs and he doesn't stand like a statue looking for somebody either. We've just gone 2-0 with him; I hope I don't see him again until next year.

Fourth: The Packers have score 29 and 30 in two games on the road, and one of those games was without Love. I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that we could be a really, really good offense by the midpoint of the season. We averaged something like 10 yards/passing attempt today....with our backup. 7 yards is considered decent, 10 is nearly astronomical.

Fifth: The stated impetus for changing DCs this offseason is they wanted to get more takeaways, and by that measure, so far it's a booming success. We went from the fewest interceptions in our history to leading the league. More importantly, IMO, is that we're on track to surrender fewer points than last year's 350. 58 points in 3 games is a pace that would put us at around 330, and an average that's a full ppg better.

Sixth: The offensive line is doing a real good job. Yes, we had some penalties that hurt, but over 150 yards rushing, (3rd game in a row) and a QB who is protected enough to complete better than 70%. That doesn't happen unless people are getting blocked, and that's why I can't really buy the narrative that we really only have 3/5 of a line. I'm seeing guys getting blocked on the second level, like on Wilson's screen.

Seventh: There was some noise this past week about our pass rush, because we'd spent the first two weeks containing two of the deadliest running QBs in the league. Well, 8 sacks today. Guys like Enagbare and Smith, who got lambasted in the gameday thread for earlier errors, were on Levis like a bad rash the entire second half.

Eighth: The NFC Haves: The Eagles, Packers, Vikings, Lions, 49ers, Seahawks, Cardinals, Rams, New Orleans, Tampa. These are all teams that have shown they can score points.

The NFC Have Nots: Dallas, NY, Washington, Chicago, Carolina. I've been watching the Cowboy game today and they just can't block at all. Chicago cannot score points. Carolina has been on the bottom for too long for it to be bad luck and coincidences. Washington and New York simply don't have very good quarterback play.

An enthusiastic thumbs-up, LH. I think you should continue up to 95th and nail it to a church door somewhere in Shawano County. Maybe around Wittenberg?

Well, I think a little more clearly when I make a list.

Since Aaron is adverse to writing out Gut Reactions, maybe you should offer to take his place? I'd be down with that.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, LH. Taryn has done a fine job these last two weeks, and another poster added their best this week. We'll carry on without Nagler. No ill will toward the dude, I just can't stand watching him. He's uncomfortable on camera, inarticulate and, above all, never right.

On what other fan site would you get a Luther reference? When I was a kid in Oshkosh we would take old Hwy 45 to Eagle River to go fishing and we would stop in Wittenberg to get chicken dinners. Wisconsin, not Germany.

It's not fair to compare Willis's stats as a raw rookie coming from a smaller school to his stats in his third season. We all know what usually happens when rookies get thrown into the fire, as Willis did at Tennessee. I'm not denying that playing with the Packers has been great for him, though.

I loved the idea of getting a running QB as a backup, because running QBs thrive on chaos and can turn broken plays into positive plays. I wasn't sure about the rest of Willis's skillset, but so far so good. He knows the plays, he has handled the ball cleanly, and his throws have been crisp and on target almost every time. He has also been extremely disciplined as a passer and has yet to make a single throw into a dangerous situation.

The penalties have been frustrating, and I hope they become much less frequent, but in past years when I've looked up how many penalties each team has for the season, they have not correlated strongly with win-loss records. So as bad as they are when they happen, they are a relatively minor factor overall.

Excellent summary LH!

And yes the O-line did play well despite the penalties. Good in pass pro and the run blocking got better as the game progressed. I do hope Morgan heals quickly from his second shoulder injury though. Depth on the O-line is a bit thin without him available.

Leatherhead stated above that he hopes he does not see Willis again until next year.

I don't agree. I would hope that LAF would use Willis in the wildcat each game. He would be tremendous and would get our competitors another thing to practice for.

Hi Hawk,
I like the idea, but have always felt that that kind of stuff is almost like a warning to the "D" for what you're planning.
However, after watching Willis for 2 weeks, he just might be the right guy to pull it off. His passing has really impressed me after knowing pretty much nothing about him other than his 'youngster' stats.
Not for a second would I ever suggest he replace Love, but he's still a rookie to the Packers' system, and once he masters it he could be really deadly. That would be hella' fun to watch.

Great win, very nice game on both sides the ball. If I had to pick out anything negative it would be:
1. Stokes is awful. Levis was throwing to whomever Stokes was covering. He put a target on his back not vying for the football and getting deked out for a touch down, A first round pick doenst make that mistake, a rookie might.
2. I think the pack would be wise to shop around for another kicker and have him on the P squad as a just in case.
Narveson just doesnt have it IMO. He will costs us a game or two this year.
3. LeFleur is way too conservative in the red zone. He was coaching for a field goal when hey, lets try something novel and pass into the end zone maybe twice and see what happens versus lets let the clock run down and get into position for a three pointer. I mean he let 20 seconds run off the clock before calling a time out. Why would a coach ever let his own clock run down when your trying to score? NOt happy with that and he did it last week as well.
My only possible think is he had made his mind up Willis would not be passing the ball in the red zone so it was run and field goal all the way.

Coaches often let the clock run down when their team has the ball near the end of a half. They do it so if the other team gets the ball back, they won't have much time left. This is basic strategy in the modern NFL. Yes, I don't think LaFleur wanted Willis passing the ball in the red zone. LaFleur still does not completely trust Willis. Nothing wrong with taking a 20-7 lead into halftime.

I'd like to see the stats for Stokes in this game. I'm not sure he was that bad. The TD he allowed was in one-on-one coverage against a good WR. It was a good throw and a good catch, and a great effort by the WR to get into the end zone. Sometimes the other team makes a good play against you.

Nice game from the Packers, except for too many penalties. It’s game three; by this time they should be cleaning that up. A win with your no. 2 qb is a good win. Eager to see them hand the purple people their first L.

Anytime you can win a road game with your backup QB it is a great win. Going forward however, penalties seem to be an issue with this team especially on the offensive line. Your kicker has missed what should be considered a makeable field goal in each game so far (I recognize that the one yesterday was negated by penalty). Considering the circumstances being 2-1 at this stage is definitely very positive. Hopefully things will continue to develop on both sides of the ball while working to eliminate killer penalties and the team can grab a win Sunday against an undefeated Minnesota squad. Outside of Jordon Love the team’s health seems to be quite good after three weeks, hopefully that also continues. Go Pack!
