Packers 30 Titans 14: Game Balls/Lame Calls

Malik Willis leads Green Bay to emphatic win over his old team.

“In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!”

— Vin Scully announcing the end of Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

That quote came to mind as the Packers wrapped up another victory without Jordan Love, this time 30-14 over the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. Scully’s call, remembered as one of the most iconic in baseball history, came when a hobbled Kirk Gibson of the Dodgers limped to the plate as a pinch hitter and homered in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Oakland A’s. If you’ve never seen it, look it up on YouTube. It will give you chills.

Sunday’s win had less drama, but the improbability of it should not be undersold. A backup Titans quarterback left for dead on the Tennessee scrap heap is traded to the Packers less than two weeks before the season begins. Love goes down in the opener and Willis, having barely learned the playbook, turns in a stellar performance last week against the Colts and then runs it back against his old team boasting a better defense, playing at home and desperately in need of a win. It wasn’t  only Willis, of course; another impressive game plan from Matt LaFleur and a defensive front that racked up eight sacks combined to leave the Titans as the only winless team in the NFL, pending the Monday night games.

GAME BALLS

Malik Willis — A no-brainer, but now we’ve seen he can also be an effective downfield passer after LaFleur limited him to screens, check-downs and short-field throws in week 2. Willis uncorked a catchable, first quarter go-ball with touch to a tightly covered Christian Watson, who hauled it in for a 30-yard gain. In the second quarter, he hit Romeo Doubs with a dart on a deep-middle crosser for 18 yards. Meanwhile, Willis was the Packers’ leading rusher, finishing with 73 yards on six carries that were once again chosen wisely rather than in panic mode. In his two starts he has a combined passer rating of 123.8, throwing for 324 yards, 2 TDs and no interceptions on 25 attempts.  🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈

Xavier McKinney — Safety play isn’t always easy to evaluate, but McKinney is earning his free-agent contract, and not just for his three interceptions in three games. His football IQ, field instincts and leadership have elevated the entire secondary. He also accounted for five tackles on Sunday, four of which were solo, and a pass breakup. 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈

The D-line — Eight sacks is going to win a lot of games, though it should be noted that Tennessee’s offensive line was as effective as a screen door on a submarine. I started to feel bad for Will Levis, who is a major work in progress in his own right. But Jeff Hafley’s D also held the Titans to 33 yards rushing, an impressive performance even taking into account that Tennessee fell behind early and needed to largely abandon the run. The defensive effort was far from perfect, but the line kept pushing in 90 degree temperatures, and by the fourth quarter it was pretty much open season on Mr. Levis. Devonte Wyatt and Preston Smith stood out in particular, each registering two sacks and two tackles for loss. 🏈 🏈 🏈

Emanuel Wilson — Wilson is getting rotational playing time with the injury to rookie third round draft pick MarShawn Lloyd, and if Wilson keeps this up it might be hard for Lloyd to get the number 2 spot back. Wilson rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries and some chunk plays with a combination of power and speed. Especially noteworthy was a solid gain in which he stopped in traffic behind the line of scrimmage and waited for what seemed like five seconds waiting for a hole to open, and then charged through it. Not many backs show that kind of patience. He also caught two passes for 35 yards and a touchdown, showing impressive YAC capability. 🏈 🏈 🏈

UNSUNG HERO

Daniel Whelan — The punter is closer to the bottom of the league than the top when it comes to average punt yards and net average after returns, but he’s shown a knack the past two games for placing the ball well and limiting opponents’ opportunities and field position. He’s capable of 50+ yard punts, including a 63-yarder Sunday, but depending on field position that’s not always called for, which can skew the stats. He is quietly having a good year.

LAME CALLS

— These penalties, especially those committed by the offensive line, have got to stop. For the second game this year the Packers committed 10, accounting for a whopping 75 yards and by my count eight unrealized points in the first quarter alone. The most maddening of these have been for illegal formation, a point of emphasis by the league and inexcusable by these players. Rasheed Walker was the biggest perpetrator Sunday, and he really needs to get it together.

— Brayden Narveson. The stat line doesn’t show it, because his missed field goal was wiped off the books by a defensive penalty, but effectively he was 3 for 4 for a third straight week. As noted last week, 75% is not a sustainable percentage under any circumstances, and the Packers have been lucky the misses haven’t yet been too costly. But he is missing from under 50 yards, and sooner or later that is going to mean the difference between winning games and losing them. He needs to get better fast or the team needs to look elsewhere. His tough mindset that has the coaches enamored isn’t translating to making kicks that most NFL kickers handle easily.

FINAL WHISTLES

— The defense is still working out a lot of kinks, which is to be expected. Sunday’s stat line is impressive, holding the Titans under 300 total yards, and the linebacker play improved from previous weeks, particularly against the run. There is still significant work needed in coverage by the linebacking corps, and I am still waiting for Hafley to spring some full-house blitzes. It was heartening to see one play where had a 6-man D front rush the passer, but he has yet to deploy cover zero blitzes. The takeaway statistics are also a big upgrade from last year, but a few of the team’s seven INTs have come on errant passes, not forced by the D. Jaire Alexander’s pick-six on Sunday was a brilliant exception, as he baited the Titans’ young quarterback to perfection.

— The team has a big decision facing it now regarding Love. Obviously he has to be cleared to play by the doctors, and it’s equally obvious he’s pushing hard to get back on the field. But the last two wins have given the Packers a cushion to work with, and Minnesota’s defense next week will be gunning for him and his legs if he’s out there. Unless he’s truly unimpaired, I hope the Packers keep him out one more week. Willis has shown he can keep the team competitive, and LaFleur is on a roll game planning for him. The Vikings are looking like the 2007 Patriots right now, and the last thing the Packers need is for Love to get reinjured.

GAME BALLS
I agree with the choices here.
Willis - What more can you say. Just insane how good he has been in each of his 2 starts. After the game, I got thinking about the future. Could Willis earn himself a lot of people calling to trade for him? Could the Packers turn Willis into a 2nd round pick or something similar? He has been so damn impressive, I have to think there would be teams that would be willing to make a move like that. And if they traded a 7th round pick and got a 2nd round in return, what a hell of a home run. (either way its a homerun right now).

Xavier McKinney - This maybe Gutey's best FA signing. He has had some great signings. The Smith Bros. Amos, some veteran OL that really contributed. I would include Douglas into that list as well since the signed him from another teams PS. The signings that Gutey has made, have been really good. And I think McKinney is the best. At least the early payoffs have been great.

The D-line - Crazy to think what the scheme change has done for this defensive front. While it still a work in progress this front has been really good. And this game they unloaded on the Titans. Wyatt maybe the best of the bunch at this point. After this game I wonder how the Titans feel about trading Willis and keeping Levis.

Emanuel Wilson - He was very good. He just has the ability to make something out of nothing and has the ability to subtly make people miss. He was very good. When Lloyd does come back they are going to have a really good trio. Lloyd will still find ways onto the field with his explosiveness. But they have to feel very good about what they have in Wilson.

(My one added)
The coaches - The game plan again was incredibly good. The offense just feels 2 steps ahead of the defense. They were damn good again. They deserve so much credit!

UNSUNG HERO

Daniel Whelan -
He has become one of the better punters in the league. Also he has to correct for a lot of bad snaps on FG attempts. (The snaps are still not great).

Enagbare -
I have to add this one. His sack fumble I think changed the momentum in the game. The Packers were up by 13 points but the Titans were moving at the time and had all the momentum. That sack fumble to me changed the game.

Watson -
His 2 catches to me changed the game early. He created 2 huge plays, one of them was on a 3rd and 18. And he blocks his ass off.

LAME CALLS

Penalties - While some of the calls have been ticky tacky, they need to stop the easy ones. The false starts, the offsides, the illegal formations. Those can be fixed. Preston Smith lining up offsides took away a sack from Gary.

FINAL WHISTLES

The defense is still working out a lot of kinks, which is to be expected. -
What is crazy about this is that they are still learning the defense. Hafley has said that he is still running a vanilla defense right now to basically make sure everyone knows what they are doing. And they will expand on stuff. But they already have as many interceptions as they did all of last year. They have 7 interceptions on the year, which is how many they had last year in 17 games. That is an insane stat.

Love -
If Love was ok to play but not fully healthy it was probably the smartest decision to play Willis. He didn't have to worry about getting hurt. But also if they would have lost, it really wouldn't hurt them in any playoff seeding outside of of the total win/losses. Also playing on the turf field probably wouldn't have been good for him. But it keeps Love healthier.

Victory Monday!

Thanks RC, it's good to see fans also lifting to the occasion and providing the text-based takes in the CHTV fan-favorite articles - #NaglerCleanOutTheEarWaxAndListen

Some more hon. mentions:

1) Tucker Kraft - if there was a Goon-1 on the depth chart, then he's assuming that role. Does heaps of cleaning out and blocking.

2) Receivers - Really lifting to do the Goon work. A thankless task that doesn't appear on the stats sheet, but Wilson's TD was due to their selflessness

3) Josh Myers - Quietly going about his game without being seen and fortifying the 1 gaps...... which is massive for a C (you only hear about them when they do bad)

Not sure if I can apportion this next one to a singular position group, but I'm liking seeing the swarming to the ball and run yardage minimization.

Tackling and stopping is also getting observably better. No more "business decisions". Keep it up.

I cannot add much to this article. I will say that the penalities need to decrease. You cannot beat quality teams commiting this many penalties. Holding calls (Walker) are drive killers.

The best way to describe this game is "Sack Lunch" that is a Seinfeld reference.

“but a few of the team’s seven INTs have come on errant passes, not forced by the D. Jaire Alexander’s pick-six on Sunday was a brilliant exception, as he baited the Titans’ young quarterback to perfection.”

Seems like a back handed compliment. If you look at INT’s across the league many are errant passes, that’s the nature of the beast.

Nice to see you give kudo’s to J. Alexander. He’s a difference maker and deserves the credit, even if his personality gets bothersome at times.

WOW, Willis looks like a poised veteran with fantastic mobility. He’s built like Hurts. I’m still hoping LOVE is ready for this weekend against the Vikings.

"but few of the team’s seven INTs have come on errant passes not forced by the D"

I know! Those lucky Packers! Being in the right place, right time is always just due to chance, so...

And only one of the 8 sacks caused a fumble. What's up with that?

The LBs may have played better, but Hafly still cannot trust them to send all 3 on a zero blitz.

The defense held the Titans to just 33 yards rushing, but run game was abandoned early so not a big deal.

(tongue planted firmly in cheek;-)

I'd add Jaire's Pick 6 to the Game Ball entries. Enagbare gets added to this list as well, He was disruptive, all game long. The penalties this team incurs have to stop. Now! Especially the penalties incurred by the OL guys.

Great call about Engabare! Gary subs out, Engabare subs in........ RT thinks "great I get a few rest snaps"...... then "oh cr@p, my QB's face down in the dirt!

This isn't the 2020 Packers with limited to no OLB depth (note - a very young Rashan Gary)

Let's keep in mind that this is two weeks in a row against teams the Packers should beat and NEEDED to beat. Losses to either of what looks like two non-playoff teams when you see yourself as a contender would be pretty damaging, especially when the other teams in the division will get a chance to beat them and put some distance between them in the standings. Even with Love on the shelf, they're the better team and they showed it. It's hard for anyone to say at this point that Gute made a mistake in moving on from Clifford and Pratt.

Willis--you have to feel good for the kid making good where they'd essentially given up on him. Sure the front office and coaching staff had turned over since he was drafted, so they had little connection or loyalty to Willis, but that 7th round pick looks really inconsequetial compared to two wins. People want to give Clements and LaF credit for "fixing" Willis, but his preseason performance in TN was good (even playing with 3s and 4s) and his time in GB has been too short to say they would've done very much to his mechanics or presence. The game plans have been good. Willis has been ready to do what they ask--that's mostly him.

That said, there's no QB controversy. The Packers are paid up high on Love and Willis is the backup. With any luck, Willis won't play another meaningful snap this season, but--if he does and he shows well--he might have some trade value this off-season. He's under contract through 2025, and having a good cheap backup is a good thing, but he's likely to walk for a chance to play after his contract ends. Until then, he's a valuable backup.

D-Line--they got to eat, and this Tennessee team looked mostly cooked in the second half. Again, this is a team that has had real OL issues the last few years (Dillard as starting LT?) and their QBs have taken a beating. This DL SHOULD have been able to tee off. It's reassuring that they did. Next week will be the challenge at Lambeau against a Vikings OL that's playing well, but Darnold is dinged and not a runner. They'll need to beat him up some next week to slow down a very efficient Vikings offense.

Wilson--he's a keeper, but Jacobs is the bell-cow. That TD screen pass was so well blocked downfield that when Wilson juked 29 out of his jock, he was running free.

Sean Rhyan--give him a game ball. He didn't seem to be anyone's preferred starter, but he's played well and had to hold up to Simmons and Sweat yesterday in the heat. I think Josh Myers has been quietly good, too.

"The takeaway statistics are also a big upgrade from last year, but a few of the team’s seven INTs have come on errant passes,"

I'm giving you a "lame call" on this. You never fault guys for making the plays--especially TOs--that are there to be made. We bitch about a guy who drops an easy pick that hits him in the hands or chest, let's not shit on them when they actually catch the ball. Pressure and TOs are the coin of the realm on defense. This Packers team is something like +6 after 3 games, two with a backup QB who people had very little good to say about when he arrived.

What was our record against "poor" teams last season? Kind of refreshing to win a gimmie (if there really is such a thing in the NFL) when all we used to do was play at any other team's level in the past, good or bad. This team is maturing as we watch.

Now the penalties on the other hand.......

Throw the teams you should beat out the window when you're playing with a back-up QB on the road. The Packers were underdogs in both of Willis wins. While there's no QB controversy, the Packers have a true chaos agent as a back-up. He can beat you with both his feet and his impressive arm, and honestly, do you find yourself holding your breath when he takes off running?

I'm not saying he's necessarily a top starting QB in the NFL, but my guess is he'd be pretty lethal in SF. As you say, Love is both paid, and proven exceptional. If Willis has the right mind for it, is there a better job in America than as a highly paid back-up QB? Willis has two weeks running proved he belongs behind the center of a pro football team. I'd rather wait for Love to be 100% before he lines up again, than risk a full-season of Malik Willis being the principal QB. Wait a week Matt. Let Malik make Minnesota Minnesota again. Sam Darnold is about to fall back to earth. It will be glorious.

Finally, can we all take some joy from Justin Fields play in Pittsburgh. My god, the Bears are awful, and they're doing it again with their chosen heir.

"My god, the Bears are awful, and they're doing it again with their chosen heir."

See what happens to any team or QB if they neglect the O-line?

They want to rely on their D. They somehow didn't neglect that line.

What are they thinking? Almost to the point where you can feel sorry for the youngster because he was roped into playing for that team. He may turn out to be very good somewhere like Fields is starting to show now.

The weird thing is they THINK they've done enough each year for the OL to be better, but their decisions are mostly meh at best. They need to sell out and do a full-bore overhaul on the line in the draft...but, of course, their draft picks really haven't worked for them, either.

My only comment here is that if Love is 90 to 100% ready to play he should play against the Vikings. It a division game and if your best player is available then you play him especially given the amount of money he is being paid. If you end up losing the game at least you know that you've lost with your best player on the field rather than on the bench.

Again if Love is not ready or cleared to play then obviously the Packers will stick with Willis. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

It was a win so lets celebrate. With caution. We beat a lousy indy and titans team both looking for stability and direction right now. Willis did his job. But in reality what he did would not have worked against better teams so lets not raise the hero flag.
Right now we still have no idea because of Loves injury just what kind of team this is. The receivers are rusty due to lack of work. We just happen to have to running back stiffs on IR because they couldn't heal their injuries.
You got Watson jumping around like he beat the world when he has what two catches so far this year and still hasnt dont in his calf muscle yet?
Next week we will all see just where the Packers stand quality wise. IF you told me the vikes by 24 points I would not take that bet. They look polished on both offense and defense, maybe the best d in football right now and look well coached. Only 4 penalties in last weeks game. They dont kill themselves.

Let’s pump the brakes on your awesome Vikings. Let’s see, they beat the Giants led by the mighty Daniel Jones, a Niners team on a downswing and a Texans team which had squeaked by the incompetent Colts & Bears.

In general, you seem to be under the delusion that a Packer fansite is a good place to slobber over the Vikings of all teams. Surely there is a purple themed site to accommodate your football tastes. But before you go, since you are saying that the Packers +24 isn’t enough of a spread, i’m willing to take the Packers and 25.

"— Brayden Narveson. "

His misses have all been pushing the ball right...they've been straight, but just off target. My recollection is that has mostly to do with timing in the approach to the ball, and is correctable. He's gotta get it done, but followed the miss with a kick that was right down the middle from 49.

The Narveson angst is somewhat pointless. Narveson is an inexperienced kicker even for a rookie whom we took a flyer on because the journeyman we had in camp wasn’t good enough percentage wise and we saw Carlson’s inconsistencies seem eerily similar to last season.

Narveson probably needed a year, so to expect much more was blind optimism. He either gets it right gradually or he doesn’t, but the problem is the reason we gambled on him at the last minute, not him failing to live up to expectations. For what it’s worth he’s currently kicking around Crosby’s career conversion average and better than Crosby did in his first 5 years.

Why does the Narveson angst irritate me? Well partly because there’s nothing out there better. The best free agent appears now to be Carlson unless you count the completely untested (less so than Narveson). It is mostly the same people that screamed to be free of Carlson now wringing their hands.

We rolled the die and we now have to accept that and live with it. In this instance, going cheap in FA proved a mistake. I suspect they thought Carlson would likely improve his shorter kicking consistency not remain as unpredictable even in the good summer conditions.

Gute and company got Willis right and solved what we all thought was a problem. The other flyer is less clearly a solution but he’s not been a disaster yet and we gambled in upside and there no alternative that any one could validly expect to do better. We are stuck with him or, if he implodes, hoping Carlson is willing or probably being notably worse.

Kicking is not our strong point this year. At this point Narveson is really the most likely source of changing that, but the probability is it is just going to remain a weak suit.

The Packers replaced a couple replacement level kickers with a guy who is--at the moment--a replacement level kicker....who hits the chip shots and the PATs. That puts him a notch ahead of Carlson at this point.

I think many believed the Packers D vs the Titans O would be the contest to tip scales for the game, and it did.

But it was Willis's cool leadership & his running and passing that weighted the scales for the dominant result. What a pick up by Team Gutey! His intelligence and skills show why he was a 3rd rounder (86th player chosen) a few years ago. Team Matt has done more to mold his skills for the NFL in two weeks than the Titans did in 2 years.

It must painfully stinging Titans fans watching their traded 3 string QB out perform their anointed starter. (tidbit: Levis was the back up to Clifford at Penn State for two years before he transferred to Kentucky)

I believe Narveson was 3 for 3 in FGs, not 3 for 4. Or do we count the rush yards Jacobs had taken away due to O line penalties too?

I expect Love will be starting in Lambeau next Sunday to take on the Ugly Purple. Expect the sports press will again push the revenge narrative this week...for Jones.

We need to stop repeating that Narveson needs to be better. Everyone knows it and everyone knows his bio up to this date. He is not Brandon Aubrey, Kaimi Fairbrain or Nick Folk and do not act like it was some kind of unknown. We decided to gamble and his first year here it is hard to expect much. Kicker is if not a weak point of this team - the most risky. Cheer for the guy and that's it.

I also don't get the errant passing iterceptions narrative. Discussions wheter the throw was a mistake or defensive error is philosophy. Technically bad throw probably means that there was a pressure - so is it the bad sign for the D? If the pass was perfect but DB ran into the lane - there was no pressure only individual talent of DB - so does it mean D is good or not? Pointless discussion.

But I think I get what you meant with this D. It is all about proving themselves against a legit offense and this opportunity comes week 4. We can be not thrilled after week 3, but surely Titans game was not an argument to be upset. Titans were bad and we domiated them with multiple turnovers and 8 sacks. Our D did exactly what should be done against poor opponent's O. They performed well and in recent history I remember some different situations. I suggest giving them a small + and wait for more.

He's only going to get better as the year goes on. Although, I understand some just have to find something negative and beat the living shit out of it! Human nature, I guess??

It’s why I say I’m still somewhat nervous about the defense—the LB play is sloppy—let’s play Cooper more.
If Love is ready, play him. Shelving him is wasted talent.
I loved seeing the 9’rs melt—they and their fawned over coach, GM, and team. Let’s do the same to the Vikings.
Go Packers!!!

Cooper is getting more plays. This will continue. He was very effective and efficient with his snaps yesterday. I am sure Haf and Campanile see his upside value on the field and will continue his increasing play. And he can really knife through on a blitz!

Quay played better and McDuffie had a solid game. He's going to hit you!

LB play was better overall.

Love will play.

True—although I disagree on quay. With his speed, he should be making more plays. Teams should scheming around him.

Quay played better than last week and where he played best was pressuring the QB or attacking the ball carrier.

I just don't think he's good in space, especially when playing pass D at the Mike. I think Cooper is going to be the Mike eventually. Walker at Will or Sam.

Great job, Johnathan! I really like the vibe heading into this game against the Minnesota NFL franchise. It's either the mighty undefeated Purple against our scrappy back-up QB, or the division-leading Minnesota Football Club against our underdog returning semi-lame star QB. Win-win (and it will be a win, regardless).

Sit Jordan if he's not 100% and help Sam Darnold remember he's Sam Darnold. The sweetest victory of the season is nearly here.

He did in terms of pressures and while his sack was cancelled by a penalty, the penalty had no impact on his sack beyond that statistic.

It's safe to say that Willis has played much better than almost anyone expected. A lot better than the minor cost of a 7th round pick in the 2025 draft. We have a limited sample, but it seems he's proven that he belongs in the NFL. Gute did well, as he so often does.

All the same, there won't be a quarterback controversy when Love returns. Fifty million big ones are not going to be sitting on the bench. But depending on how things develop down the road, a quarterback-desperate team may be willing to part with considerably better than a 7th rounder at some point in the future if they're in dire need. Maybe they'd make Gute an offer that he simply can't refuse. And if not, we have a very competent back-up for Love. It's a great position to be in.

I have a question. We've just seen how valuable Willis is. How would we be feeling about the season right now if we were 0-3? But we're already thinking of trading him? For what? What draft pick, or picks, could possibly be worth more to us than Willis?

Having a really good starting QB is a big advantage, and having good backup that can win games for you is a rare luxury on most teams.

Willis is now a proven asset. I didn't suggest trading him immediately or even this season. I didn't suggest trading him at all. All I said was it may be a possibility in the future if the opportunity is too good for Gute to refuse and that's a great position to be in. I agree with you that having a quality back-up is a luxury. Which is why I also said if it doesn't happen then having Willis on the roster was great, too. Thanks for your comment.

I would hang onto Willis unless something absurd came alone. Carolina offering Young and their 2025 #1 would do it for me.

As it turns out, Gutey got the steal of the 2022 draft. I think Willis and Love are going to be a good team for a while. Who knows? Maybe he becomes Jordan's "Zeke"?

Sounds like a good trade to me, too.

And more seriously, it's a really nice position to be in. We can all trust in Gute's judgement. Thanks for your comment.

If they’re going to foist Young on the Packers, the Packers should ask for their first round pick as compensation.

On 2 games, Willis looks to have 3 things: the mental acuity to play within coaching, the ability to make sound decisions under pressure (protect the ball and field position) and the athletic talent billed a draft time. The first 2 were decidedly unexpected and unlock the third. They are also the primary qualities desired in a career back up. Thats real value alone.

However, the difference between that and a potential starter is threefold. The possession of adequate arm talent, the ability to read the field and finally to go through progressions. Willis has displayed the arm talent and throws in running ability too. He seems to read the defenses and blitzes decently. The final element is still not proven.

He looked to be going through progressions yesterday, but simple ones. Can he handle multiple reads of the type seen in a full NFL O? Thats perhaps still a question mark in offenses such as Love plays, but I think teams may feel he could handle a colts or titans O better than the incumbents!

As of today, I could easily see a team seeing Willis as a starter with more upside, even if he is one that requires a tailored O initially. Seattle saw Flynn as one. Darnold has so far been one in Minnesota, Geno Smith in Seattle, Baker Mayfield. All of them had questions as large or greater when acquired. Mostly mental as opposed to physical.

Arguably, a number of teams could see Willis, as he has shown himself to be over a 2 game snapshot, as a proven and thus better bet to be a long term starter prospect than any other FA and perhaps most draft picks. It only takes one, but two would be better.

If we didn’t have Love, I think we’d be excited about what he could be longer term. Hasselbeck had only attempted 29 passes when signed by Seattle (Flynn had a hundred or so more under his belt).

Here’s a thought. He’s on a 2 year deal. Do we keep him and let him become a FA, risking him going to the Bears or Vikings ir another NFC team, or trade him after this season to a team in the other conference and accept a weaker back up?

I pose that question not only because it’s an interesting thought to me, but because it not being a totally fantastical scenario says something about what Willis’ value might be. Would you want him as a QB for a rival?

"He’s on a 2 year deal. Do we keep him and let him become a FA, risking him going to the Bears or Vikings ir another NFC team, or trade him after this season to a team in the other conference and accept a weaker back up?"

I'm guilty of being the one who speaks on whether or not Willis will generate some trade value, and this is part of why.

It's important to note that he's unlikely--especially if he shows well in future preseason, mop up, and injury roles--to return to GB to be a backup after his current (very cheap, all told) rookie deal expires. He'll want to get paid and get a chance to be the man.

I realize my mentality probably fits more of the "MLB years of control value" mindset, but he could very well become someone that a very QB needy team might be willing to throw a day 2 pick at. You have to ask what that value is relative to bringing in another QB to fill the role...or v. losing him and maybe just getting a comp pick in return in 2026 (depending on how the Packers sign in 2025).

Do I think he'll be a quality starter? Well, at this point, I think he's played in a limited sample as well as starters like Anthony Richardson. He's got to learn to not go head-first into piles, though, or he won't last long.

Willis’ calmness on the field and decision making is of a completely different order to that he displayed early in his rookie season. There is no film out there that could have reasonably led any fan to expect that degree of a step. Yet it’s what Gute cited our pro scouts as identifying and as triggering the decision to try to trade. If that was more than blind luck, they really did a great job on that. His physical talent was always there but mentally, he seemed a long shot.

I think the 1265 Brass deserve a game ball. Look at all the changes: A new defensive philosophy of creating more takeaways, a new DC to implement that, big FAs like Mckinney and Jacobs ( I remember a time when we rarely pursued top tier FAs), and the development of players on the team over a year or two, like Wyatt and Nixon and Walker (not to mention people like Reed and Tom, who were players right out of the box)

Then, we get rid of both of our backup QBs a couple of days before the season starts, and we pick up a guy who hasn't done jack squat (try to imagine Matt Foley saying that) in two years . and make him our backup, and then our starter gets injured, and this guy hasn't turned it over at all and completes over 70% of his throws. You have to give the coaches credit for improving these guys, and the scouting department for identifying these guys, and a front office that pulls the trigger on these deals.

The Packers are the #1 rushing team in the league after three weeks. How many people saw that coming? And the Purple is leading the division, undefeated. How many people saw that coming? And SF is 1-2? And Dallas is 1-2?

This was a very, very good early season victory. We're playing well, protecting the ball, getting takeaways and not giving up many points. We have a chance to be in first place after 4 weeks...all we have to do is win a game at home against the Purple, and despite their 3-0 record, they aren't that formidable.

Well said!

Every week, two teams have to win for me: The Pack and whoever is playing the Ugly Purple.

Twice per regular season, it is the same team.

Go Pack Go!

(My daughter and son in law were at the game. The said it was like a Packer home game!)

Defense is much more aggressive and doing really well with interceptions, forced fumbles and sacks but there are remaining concerns about fundamentals and persistent penalties.
MacDuffie, Q. Walker, Gary, Smith have not been consistent, though I have noticed Rashan tends to show up for big games.
MLF will need to go toe-to-toe with Flores who has baffled some of the best and the brightest this year. And, A Jones may have something to prove as well.

I just don't want Love to be re-injured by the tough Minnie D. The team needs to support him while he gets his sea legs back and I don't want him to feel he has to save the day.

I disagree with handwringing over potential injuries. You can’t place your players in a plastic bubble.
And (in any sport) coaches/players who manage/play not to get hurt, are hurting-not helping their teams.

Game ball to the fan base. Nashville looked and sounded like a home game. The upper bowls were green and gold. The lower bowls of titan faithful emptied out by the middle of the fourth quarter. The Titans brought out a former player to rev up the crowd but got drowned out by a GPG chant.

I do want to raise a point about the FGs. We had a miss wiped out by a penalty, and converted 3 other attempts. 9 points.

One of the kicks was at the end of the half, but our first FG was a 21 yarder after we had a first and goal at the 2. Rather than kicking the FG, we could have gone for it on 4th and either got a TD or turned it over to the Titans on their own goal line. I'm inclined to believe that we should go for it on 4th more often, and kick FGs less, and this looks like a perfect opportunity .
