Packers 24, Texans 22: Game Balls/Lame Calls

Green Bay survives a day of highlights and low lights.

Enjoy roller coasters? This game was for you.

In what would otherwise be considered a dominant performance against the Houston Texans, the Packers eked out a last-second 24-22 win after several attempts to let the game slip away.

Green Bay was on the wrong side of the turnover battle for only the second time this year, and suffered their first shutout on takeaways. Yet this was the best game of the season for Jeff Hafley’s defense, with relentless blitz and pressure packages that flummoxed quarterback C.J. Stroud and neutered Houston’s passing game.

Another rough first half was rescued by a brilliant third quarter.

The Packers’ special teams made critical mistakes, yet in the end their newly signed, experienced kicker came through in the clutch.

It was a yin and yang kind of day.

GAME BALLS

Eric Wilson — Rarely if ever in the spotlight, the eight-year linebacker on his fourth team had his coming-out party Sunday, with highlight-reel plays versus the run and in pass coverage. A monster stuff of Joe Mixon on a Texans’ two-point try at the end of the first quarter was followed later by a big sack of Stroud and a key pass breakup in the third quarter. Wilson was seemingly everywhere, ending the day with two sacks and four tackles for loss. Quay Walker went out with a concussion early, and while of course we hope for a swift and uncomplicated recovery, the reality is that on the field this LB corps is better without him. 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈

Rashan Gary — After a slow start to the season, Gary looked more like  his old self Sunday, getting home for one sack and harassing Stroud all day long. He and Kingsley Enagbare ran some excellent stunts, especially in the first half before Houston largely abandoned any thought of passing the ball. 🏈🏈🏈🏈

Josh Jacobs — Jacobs doesn’t quite have the after-contact churn that Aaron Jones is so good at, but when the O-line opens up even a small   crease, his burst through to the second level is unparalleled. He ran for 76 yards on 12 carries, an average of over six yards per tote. He also caught his first touchdown pass as a pro, a remarkable stat considering his overall career success as a pass-catcher. The offense should look to pass to him more. 🏈🏈🏈🏈

Romeo Doubs — He really should think about selling insurance when his career ends, because that’s what he provides for Jordan Love and the passing game. Doubs led the team with eight receptions for 94 yards, many in key situations that kept the chains moving. 🏈🏈🏈🏈

UNSUNG HERO

Dontayvion Wicks — Whatever was messing with his head appears to be resolved, as he made two stellar catches on his way to three receptions for 48 yards and a TD. His mojo is back, and when he puts it all together on a consistent basis, look out. Honorable mention to Kenny Clark, who had an excellent game.

LAME CALLS

Special teams — First there was the second quarter mishap on a deep punt that Keisean Nixon was waiting to field. Nixon failed to alert his blockers that the ball would hit the ground, and it grazed Corey Ballantine and was recovered by Houston. Later, Jayden Reed made a horrible decision in the third quarter to field a kick that was headed for the end zone and a touchback, instead pinning Green Bay inside their own five. It seems like there is always one aspect of Packers’ special teams play that is a problem. Mister Bisaccia: Now that the kicker situation seems rectified with Brandon McManus, how about we tighten up the rest of the operation?

Jordan Love — Is it possible that Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers had a baby, and named him Jordan Love? Love does several things reminiscent of Rodgers in his prime, but recently Love has been channeling Favre’s gunslinger tendencies, and not in a good way. Love settled down in the second half, but his two interceptions in the first half were his fault, and made this game closer than it ever should have been. We’ve seen Love play much cleaner than this, and need him to revert to that part of Aaron Rodgers’ DNA.

FINAL WHISTLES

Thankfully, there was just enough good to overcome the bad at Lambeau:

— Overall, the defense was excellent, save for getting shredded by Joe Mixon on the regular. The hard truth is that you can’t cover everything, and I can’t ding Hafley for the choice he made to disrupt the talented Stroud at all costs. Mixon is a load, but there were a few plays in which the Packers had hands on him in the backfield and should have at least limited those chunk runs.

— Once again, Matt LaFleur owned the third quarter. He’s the adjustment king at halftime, one of the many areas in which he stands apart from Mike McCarthy. Could this explain his fondness for taking the opening kickoff when he wins the coin toss? Had the Texans scored on their opening drive in the third, the game likely would have been over. Deferral is almost always preferable.

— What stands out most from this game is that the Packers are proving they can find ways to win, instead of finding ways to lose. I’m always going to prioritize execution over the scoreboard, because the latter takes care of itself if the former is up to par. But there is an intangible element of rising to the occasion, of being clutch, and the Packers seem to have it now in ways they haven’t always in the past. Seeing a capable field goal kicker win it in the final seconds certainly helps. It’s a nice feeling. GPG.

"Quay Walker went out with a concussion early, and while of course we hope for a swift and uncomplicated recovery, the reality is that on the field this LB corps is better without him."

Don't you think that's kind of harsh? Quay's just a youngster with a lot on his plate with play calls and formation alignments so I think he'll be just fine in the long run. He's good for a couple good plays a game and the NFL is set up now to make any defender look bad on occasions and they all do.

T7Steve: I think I am more in the author's camp than yours on Walker. Walker is a wonderful athlete who seems to have few instincts for the game. His inability to diagnose plays often sends him to the wrong hole or be in the wrong spot on a passing play. Maybe he will get better with time, but I haven't seen much of a learning curve to date.

The truth sometimes is harsh. I thought Wilson was a play maker while Walker is a play reactor. Walker should be asked to earn his job back.

I didn’t get to see the game as it wasn’t carried by CBS in SW Ohio(🤬). From what I read, I sense that Eric Wilson is a better combination with McDuffie than Walker is. Anyone else think this is accurate?

Slim,
Fortunately for me I was able to see the game in central CA and I was totally impressed with Wilson as we've become somewhat accustomed to 'average' play from our linebackers.
Wilson was the talk of the game over and over again yesterday, and it appeared that his instincts were better than what I've seen from Walker.
Whether or not he's a replacement for Walker remains to be seen, but to me it would be hard to ignore the upgrade he exhibited yesterday.
You play to win the game!

Wilson is a veteran who played well ,especially as a 4-3 cover LB for the queens. He knows the Game. He needs to be the Man along with Cooper inside.

Wilson is small Jannes... I am not a fan of undersized linebackers ... having said that he did have a great game ( But ) there were some pretty large chunks of running going on between the tackles after Quay went out... By the way I believe this is Quays third concussion after that monster hit he took from D Wright of the Bears last year... something to keep an eye on. In the mean time I'm hoping LB Ty Hopper gets more reps...

Walker is the leading tackler on the D, by far...and if healthy, you don't bench that production.

I do believe Quay should be receiving pre snap directions, not making them. "Mike" is not the role for him.

Hafley's mantra is to simplify the game plan and play FAST. He needs to simplify the game a lot more for Walker.

Give the green dot to Cooper, even Wilson permanently. Let Walker play Will or even Sam. Use his tremendous athletic talent in more pressure packages. More thumping, less thinking.

In the excellent management book, "Good to Great" by Jim Collins, successful organization must get the right people on the bus...then next make sure you get them in the right seats.

Walker belongs on the bus but he is in the wrong seat, in my humble opinion.

Walker is a beast, but this year for whatever reason he is lost. He played his best football when he was within 5 yards of the LOS and played on reactions, not 10 yards deep and covering a middle of the field zone.

Somehow, with Walker making those calls the defense has improved weekly. Don't undersell his understanding and learning a new defense. Walker wouldn't have that dot on his helmet if he wasn't trusted by his coordinator.

You guys hold such high praise for Gute's draft picks.- WTF-
Nobody goes sideline to sideline, better than Walker.
We don't have #66 on this team.
What we have had, is a lot of flash in the pans.
Even one AJ HAWK moving from OLB to ILB.
I prefer to keep Quay Walker. So just stop.
He's better than AJ HAWK was.
And he leads the team in tackles.
Guess you prefer Blake Martinez again.

GAME BALLS

Defense —
Honestly the entire defense needs a game ball. They essentially shut down the Texans. 10 points came off of turnovers that started at the 11 each time. They scored their other TD after another turnover. They gave up 6 points on pure drives. They scored 16 off of turnovers.

Eric Wilson —
Wilson definitely deserves special recognition. He was a beast. He was all over the field.

Daniel Whelan —
First off his punts flipped the field how many times. He kicked out of his own endzone I have no idea how many times. Texans didn't start in GB territory on any of those. But as good as his punts were, he gets a game ball for his last hold alone. That snap was terrible and somehow he got it down.

UNSUNG HERO
Dontayvion Wicks —
I like the Wicks pick. I will give him one for offense. He was definitely one of the best WR's on the day.

Evan Williams —
Williams just continues to get better and better and he is already pretty damn good. He essentially has overtaken the S spot right now. He played every snap on defense. Each of the last couple of games he has made some big time stops on 3rd down.

LAME CALLS

Special teams —
Nixon WTF are you doing? Him not catching that punt is all on him.
Reed WTF are you doing? Why are you catching the punt at the 2?

Matt Orzech —
Matt - You have 1 job. That is to snap the damn ball. Literally the only job you have. You can't have mistakes like you have had. Yesterdays last snap could have cost them the game. You had one earlier in the game on a punt that was almost on the ground. WTH are we doing.
Sorry I'm done. Time to bring in a new Long snapper!

FINAL WHISTLES

My overall take from this game. We won a game that we had 3 turnovers, we got none back. That is extremely hard to do. Especially against a good team. We made a ton of mistakes and still found a way to win the game. That to me is a great thing because it shows the team that they don't have to be perfect to win. But at the same time it teaches them that they have to be much better.

I am a Evan Williams fan. Just love the way he plays. Gute had another great draft with the improvements he made on defense.

However, I am not sold on Nixon playing defense. He is a liability. More bad happens when he is playing defense than good. I like his kickoff work but defense? Not so much!

First I agree with you on Nixon. I said it before and will say it again. Nixon is the weakest link in the secondary. That doesn't mean he is bad, as he has made some great stops that tend to get overlooked. What I am saying is that of the 4 or 5 back there, he is gonna be the one who gets picked on the most. Every team has a #4, and every team tries to exploit that.

Bisaccia has been a disappointment. He is over-rated and over-paid as one of the richest ST coordinators in the league.

Carlson was his draft pick...Gutey would not have made it without his lobbying and insistence.

Since Crosby, who he inherited, the K replacements were well known to Rich, and they all failed.

The ST penalties and bone headed decisions point to ineffective coaching...they always do.

How is it the LS Orzech remains a Packer? Are LS in short supply now? This would be a far different comment section today had Whelan not saved the game by calmly gathering Orzech's terrible snap and placed just before McManus follow through!

Rich is also Associate HC...I don't know what those duties are...but I hope he performs them better than his ST job.

You nailed it. I complained last week and all last year that our problems aren't the kickers, they are the long snapper who can never put the ball where it is intended. These guys have 1 job, and just like a kicker, or any other player whose only job is Special Teams, they need to do it right every game. Orzech needs more competition than he got in preseason.

As far as Bisaccia goes, yes he should go. First year he made a minor impact on ST, last year none. This year, he's just bad as the ST Coach. His failure to change Punt Returner (Remember Amari Rodgers in '22), Kicker and lack of understanding of the new Kick Off rules, (Nixon returning kicks with less than a minute to go from 8 yards deep in the end zone...), have led to opposition making long returns and miscues a plenty.

It wasn't Eric Wilson who stopped Joe Mixon on that 2-point conversion attempt, it was Evan Williams. The other EW.

Do you really think the Texans would've sealed a victory by scoring on the opening drive of the third quarter? That's a ridiculous statement. Methinks the decision about whether to receive or defer is vastly overrated. It all evens out, you know. If you start one half with the ball, you have to kick off at the beginning of the other half, and vice versa.

I agree with you. To receive or defer is vastly overrated. And I do not believe Matt has a penchant for winning the toss and taking the ball. He has deferred often.

However, to start the game...put your best unit on the field. For the Packers this remains Offense...for now.

Too often Matt would put Barry Ball on the field first and watch them get dragged down the field and too often kick a FG or score a TD, putting the Team in a hole before the O took a snap.

Soon, perhaps this season, the Packers will have a dominant D and deferring becomes even more moot. But for now, start the game with Love and Co, if possible.

"Once again Matt LeFleur owned the third quarter."

Really???

I thought this was one of LaFleur's poorer game plans and it didn't get much better in the second half. Between ignoring the run for most of the game and then indulging three times in ineffective WR jet sweeps I thought LaFleur put Love squarely in the crosshairs of the Houston pass rush. There was no threat of play action to slow the rush and Houston has a dangerous pass rush with Hunter and Anderson.

Statistically the running backs had 17 carries, the WRs had three carries and Love threw the ball 34 times. That is an imbalance of 37% run and 63% pass in a close game where the Packers often led. LaFleur needs to go back to his drawing board after this one.

Take away the 27 yd scamper by Jacobs and you have a team that was not running the ball well. Yes, a bit more playaction, but passing the ball was the better game plan especially with Texan's depleted backfield. We will eventually get more consistent play from or line and passing from our QB.

Jacobs still averaged more than 4 yards a carry without the 27 yard run and those breakout runs are part of running the ball. Yes, this is a passing league but more balance would have helped the Packers.

LaFleur admitted after the game he never found a play calling rhythm against the Houston defense.

Ah yes, the tried and true method for discrediting a player's or team's rushing performance: Take away their best carry to get an (imaginary) average YPC that is more in line with your opinion. In this case, you can reduce a 6.3 average to (an imaginary) 4.5, which is actually still quite good (Mixon averaged 4.6 INCLUDING his longest carry) and entirely indicative of Jacobs falling forward for solid 4-yard gains on several carries.

The odd thing about this game was how the WR carries (three for -1 yard!) dragged down the Packers' overall average. The power running game with Jacobs was highly effective.

Take away all his carries and he didn't gain any yardage. See how that works. That's how aggregating functions. You don't just count the short runs, you count the long runs too.

After the fact, it's easy to criticize LaFleur for running those jet sweeps, because they didn't work, but those plays have been a big part of the Packers offense all season, and they've been very successful with them. Three in one game is probably less than usual. I give the Texans a ton of credit for shutting those plays down.

It was a somewhat disjointed offensive effort overall though, which was eventually redeemed by the game-winning drive at the end. The Texans, even with a bunch of players missing, were a tough out.

LaFleur admitted after the game that he never got into a rhythm calling plays. DeMeco Ryans had LaFleur struggling almost as much as Hafley had the Houston OC struggling.

I know the Packers run lots of jet sweeps but after Houston had stuffed the first two, I was very surprised to see LaFleur go back to it on a weak side sweep deep in their own territory. It just looked like LaFleur didn't know how to attack this defense which is unusual for him.

Get it together, Matt LaFleur. Yeah, YOU!!! Do you want to lead this team -to- a Super Bowl, or do you want to lead your team to -winning- a Super Bowl?

C'mon. Get it together. The HC has to bring his best if he is to lead properly. Especially if the goal is to win it all.

Our RBs only had 17 carries vs. MIN!!!! WTF??? C'mon. Quit F-ing around. It was a game Love clearly was not ready to play, and you allowed him 54 passing attempts???? To just 17 rushing attempts??? That's idiotic.

With all due respect greengold, I think your assessment is overly harsh. (I thought you were one of the optimists on this site.) LaFleur was up against one of the better defensive coaches in the NFL, and the offense got skewed. It happens sometimes. Play-calling sometimes unfolds in unexpected ways based on what the defense is throwing at you. Maybe the reason Josh Jacobs' runs were so effective was because the Packers were passing so much. When it mattered most, they drove for a game-winning field goal. Against the Vikings, they got in a huge hole and had to pass a lot in the second half, which maybe wasn't such a bad strategy because they did make it interesting at the end there.

The three turnovers completely cloud the game plan's post game analysis.

Had they not happened, I believe Matt would have had more balance in run vs pass. The Texans have a very good Dline...but even LaFleur wants closer to a 50/50 balance. 12 attempts for Jacobs is too few. Eventually he will gash you. He creates big runs with vision and balance and power. And with real estate in front he can motor!

I really enjoyed this game. You're right it was a poor game plan. That's because of in game adjustments! It was a chess match. Hafley was owning the passing game, so Houston went to heavy runs. After the half, the defense made adjustments and it shut Houston down. Similarly, Houston D was making adjustments as well on Green Bay. We were going up against a very stout run defense and the only way to loosen it is to pass, screen, jet sweep and play action.

The ebb and flow of both sides could be seen in the lead changes. 7 lead changes is not a game that you can say follows any game plan in my opinion.

Some of you might laugh but the player of the game was Daniel Whelan. This, my friends, is what a real punter can do for you. Average punts would have given Houston's high-powered offense far less field in which to score. The snap on the game-winning field goal was off and Whelan got it placed well enough for McManus to kick it through.
Three cheers for Whelan!

Houston has some animals on it's defensive line. They were hardly a factor, so three cheers to a complete effort by the offensive line. They had trouble opening holes for Jacobs but every team does against the Texans.

While I don't like the trash talking and bravado the d-backs and receivers do, Jaire was able to shut down Diggs for the most part. No small task. Diggs is a head case with enormous ability. He left Lambeau merely as a head case. Buffalo is doing quite well without Diggs and I wonder if Houston will regret that move at some point.

To all the draftniks who always predict astounding things for high draft picks: Tucker Kraft looks like and All-Pro candidate in the future. Luke Musgrave is hurt again. There's still time for Musgrave to turn it around but I wonder where the Packers would be without Kraft?

The Packers secondary was a weak point just a couple of years ago. Now it's a strength with solid players across the board plus good back ups.

I am not laughing! Whelan should have received the game ball (I heard Matt gave it to the entire Defense, also deserved).

The kick happened in front of me and I could see the sloppy LS from Orzech. How Whelan so calmly gathered in the wayward snap is one thing. How he was able to place the ball immediately before McManus followed through was simply amazing.

That was the game winning play. What would comments be today had Whelan been unable to secure Orzech's wobbler?

Orzech's seat should be the hottest in the building. If he were consistent how good would Anders Carlson have been? We'll never know and he also missed an XP yesterday.

Harry, I still have Athlon's 2023 NFL Draft Guide. Tucker Kraft was ranked #18 Overall in their Top 100 Prospects listing. Ahead of TE Darnell Washington at #19, ahead of DE Lukas Van Ness at #20, and ahead of TE Luke Musgrave, ranked #23 Overall...

Gutekunst STOLE Tucker Kraft at #78 in R3 that year.

It is nice to see Tucker Kraft's development with the Packers, especially his progression this season.

*Other notable steals for the Packers from Athlon's Top 100 Prospects listing in 2023:
CB Carrington Valentine #71 (taken by Gutekunst with Pick #232 in R7)
DE/DT Colby Wooden #81 (taken by Gutekunst with Pick #116 in R4)

** The Sporting News Top 125 Prospects steals:
#26 DE Lucas Van Ness (swiped off the board by Gutekunst at #13)
#61 TE Luke Musgrave (taken with pick #42 in R2)
#71 DT Karl Brooks (taken with Pick #179 in R6)
#99 DT Colby Wooden (taken with Pick #116 in R4)
#100 TE Tucker Kraft (taken with Pick #78 in R3)
#119 WR Jayden Reed (swiped off the board by Gutekunst with Pick #50 in R2)

*** Daniel Jeremiah had LVN ranked #14 Overall, if anyone was wondering. He also had Musgrave #38 Overall. Jayden Reed #81 Overall... Tucker Kraft #56 Overall... Dontayvion Wicks (to GB at #159) #145 Overall... Carrington Valentine #137 Overall...

Also, Harry, to your other point, I'll never forget Holmgren purposefully using P Craig Hentrich as a weapon to flip the field position to help us win Super Bowl XXXI. Holmgren was masterful with that, and Hentrich always delivered. Good on you for seeing the same with Whelan. I saw that snap high and wide right too, and Whelan helped bring home that win as much as McManus did to close the game on McManus' 1st FG for the Packers. HUGE win.

so when does LVN live up to his lofty draft status?? Hope pretty soon...he doesnt seem to be learning any new techniques other than relying on his physical power...

1) How does Tucker Kraft not get a game ball here? That TD catch was a thing of beauty.

2) Rodgers/Jets 2-5.

3) Love/Packers 5-2.

4) Life is good.

They have a new coach.
Also a key OL went down.
Difference?
Try the OL.

You forgot an almost 41 year old QB/OC/HC/GM who is playing like crap. Try that.

AR to DA17 looked fast and crisp. A few nice completions to Lazard, too. And Garrett Wilson was just off.

I expect they will continue after the guy retires — which could be any day now. Malibu beckons.

johnny, Johnny, Johnny. you missed an important lame call. I've always considered the way a head coach manages the clock as a barometer of his intelligence. lafleur's reputation took a ding on Sunday as he inexplicably allowed 30 seconds to run off the clock going into the two-minute warning. he had his full complement of time outs plus the warning for a total of four. he should have started using them at 2:30. all things being equal we would have gotten the ball back with 2:14 on the clock and two timeouts left. instead it was 1:44 and one timeout. another benefit would have been if Houston got a first down on first play at 2:30, we still would have had 3 timeouts and a chance to pull out the victory. if they got ten yards or greater gain on their first play after the two-minute warning, it's game over. inexcusable.

I'm not following your reasoning here. You seem to be magically making one of the Packers' timeouts disappear while leaving LESS time on the clock. It doesn't add up.

For the record, I thought they should have used a timeout before the two-minute warning, but maybe they had their reasons for not doing so. I'm not convinced it was a blunder. After all, they did get into a position for a game-winning field goal on the last play of the game, although I would have preferred the attempt to be about 10 yards shorter. Part of it was they burned about 20 seconds while Love checked out of a play because he didn't like the look of the defense. It was probably time well spent. Better safe than sorry.

I watched the highlights. The Texans got a first down with just over 2:30 left. So if the Packers call their first time out at that point, how do you think they are going to get to 2:14 with two timeouts still left? That couldn't have happened unless the Texans threw incomplete passes or ran out of bounds at the end of all three plays. The Packers would've needed to use both remaining timeouts to stop the clock at 2:14, just as they used timeouts #1 and #2 to stop the clock to get to 1:44 after the two-minute warning.

of course we assume the same three plays and results by the Texans for comparison sake. the Texans ran 3 plays which ran 16 seconds off the clock. don't forget an incomplete pass on third down. we get the ball at 1:44 with one timeout. if we call the timeout with 2:30, we get the ball with 2:14 which leaves us with a timeout play the 2:00 timeout. see? two timeouts with 2:14 vs one timeout at 1:44. don't feel bad. our head coach can't figure it out either.

Also, look at clock mismanagement after 1:44 left.. I'm frankly amazed that didn't cost us the game.

Houston kicked off after the FG and it went out of bounds and the ball came out to the 25 yard line. Kickoffs into the endzone come out to the 30. This makes no sense to me. Why not just kick out of bounds every time?

I didn't understand that either. Kickoffs that went out of bounds used to come out to the 40, which was a fitting penalty. The NFL supposedly wants to encourage more kick returns, but now they are rewarding kickers for kicking the ball out of bounds.

I googled this for about 15 minutes and could not get a consensus. The new rules state a ball that lands in the landing zone and goes into the endzone comes out to the 25. A kick in the endzone comes out to the 30, and everywhere I looked, it said a kickoff OB comes out to the 40.

So my only thought based on two words Romo said was that it was a "Free Kick". Because of the 15 yard Unsportsman penalty, the 15 yards does nothing to penalize the team, but a kick OB, and ball at the 25 instead of the 30 or 40 does. I really don't know, maybe a rules expert can clarify this?

Well, there is a certain logic to that. I never heard of a penalty on a previous play being enforced AFTER the kickoff, but then, there are a lot of strange things in the NFL rulebook.

To me, the greatest weakness of GB is still ST play - outside of the terrific punter and hopefully, the new place kicker. It should be easy for Rich B to coach better decision making from the 2 returners? Not sure we need an overpaid ST coach with such poor results?

The long snapper is suppose to deliver the ball to the holder with the exact rotation for the holder to catch with the laces pointed forward with a minimal adjustment at the correct height to limit the holders reach for the ball to be placed at the preferred angle for the kicker to kick the ball.....something our High School regular Center also did...Other than injury to your starting center messing up the ST function...what exactly is the problem with the starting NFL center not able to do this now extra ST function on a normal basis at high level...????

The long snapper needs to run fast enough to be helpful in punt coverage. Starting NFL centers are too bulky for that. Long snappers are much lighter, like around 250 pounds.

I don't recall ANY LS EVER making a tackle in an NFL game....However, I do remember an undersized LS whiffing a block and letting a punt get blocked which enabled his team to score and knock us out of a NFCC game and Super Bowl appearance.....So there is that. I get the logic, but it has to be kicked cleanly before we worry about coverage.....ST....pick your poison I guess.

There’s the issue of practice: the regular center needs to practice with the first team offense, the LS needs to work with kickers, holders & punters.

You can throw the ball many times before you are tired. You can not kick too often and improve the results with fatigue. I would not mind Jenkins doing it. If we got the right ST-C we would not be talking about it at all. Every position seems to be near impossible to fix on ST for some reason.

There was some discussion earlier about clock management in the final two minutes.

The Packers were helped massively by the incomplete pass Houston threw on 3rd down before kicking their go-ahead field goal. They were already close enough that the extra few yards wouldn't have helped them improve the odds of making the FG in any significant manner.

What it did do was stop the clock and save an extra thirty seconds for GB's winning drive.

The incomplete pass clock stoppage also allowed GB to save their final Timeout.

The announcers didn't really even comment on what a bad decision Houston made there.

That was a huge tactical error by Houston.

Time for MLF to have a talk with Gutekunst and Bisaccia and if no improvement in special teams play overall happens, it's time for him to go. He has received the benefit of the doubt because of our historically poor special teams coaches of the past. If no improvement time for him to go.

I noticed this week that LVN played more snaps than Smith.....hmmmm......the rumor is that Smith is in trade talks with a few other teams.....this is going to put a lot more pressure on young Lukas who needs to up his game...

I totally understand he is a 23YO but he also accepted employment/money into the NFL as a 1st round pick. That sets a pretty high expectation from the onset......Add to it, he has talented D players around him, so he should be flashing more, right? Am I missing something or is the bar on him set too high for my expectations?

Hafley has had enough time to find ways to unlock LVN, but I haven't see enough to get amped about. I was really hoping to see a big leap from last season and it just hasn't happened....yet.....there's a LOT get excited about with LVN (he's a physical beast!) but I want to see him start making a name for himself on the playing field......the idea of having he and Gary as bookends during the peak of their careers has Super Bowls etched all over it.....but before I start hoisting future Lombardi's, LVN has to step his game up.....

In the game balls I would pull Gary and replace with Evan Williams.

Yes, Gary had a very good game and probably his best of the season so far. That sack was a freebie. The guy across from him stepped back, tripped and fell on his ass. He should have had multiple sacks on the day besides just pressures. This was an opportunity game for him to really shine because the match ups were so much in his favor. He did play with intensity but Williams was a difference maker again.

Oh Lord, will someone start schooling LVN on some moves. What a fast, super athletic one-trick-pony. When he figures it out, he could really be something. Somebody please help him figure it out because we want to see something, anything, other than a bull rush.
