Packers 2018 NFL Draft: Round 2 & 3 Projection
Players to keep your eye on for the Packers to target on the second day of the NFL Draft

At the end of the first round of the NFL draft last night, it was safe to say that the teams didn’t stick to the plans as laid out by the many draft pundits. Some teams put a premium on selecting their offensive lineman of the future where it wasn’t predicted and some of the highly ranked defensive players fell to where the Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers were originally slotted with the 14th pick. When the time hit the clock for the Packers, Gutekunst obviously had his guy in mind with the series of two trades that occurred to end up with Jaire Alexander at the 18th overall pick. In the end, the Packers took home the Saints first round pick in 2019, the 147th pick in the fifth round from the Saints and the 248th pick in the seventh round from the Seahawks. In the two trades, the Packers lost their 76th overall pick in the third round and 186th pick in the sixth round to the Seahawks.
Heading into day two of the NFL Draft, this leaves the Packers sitting on the board with just one pick in the second round and no picks in the third round. Many quality prospects still remain on the board with the Packers holding the 13th pick heading into the evening, but where Gutekunst and his staff value players moving forward remains a mystery until the picks are made. Here is a look at some of the players that could interest the Packers in the second and third rounds this evening.
Harold Landry: In what most would consider being the downward spiral of the first round, Landry remains available heading into the second round. It was reported last evening that some teams have flagged Landry medically for both knee and back issues when the only reported injury pre-draft was an ankle last year. If the Packers don’t have him flagged as an injury issue and find value in him in the second round, a trade up may be the only route to grab Landry. With the Browns holding two of the three initial picks tonight and the Colts holding the two following picks after that, trade partners may be ready for Gutekunst if he wanted to jump at the chance at Landry.
Courtland Sutton/Michael Gallup/DJ Chark: With a group of solid wide receivers remaining on the board heading into the second round, the Packers may hold tight at the 45th pick tonight to see who in this group falls to them. In Sutton, the Packers would get a large framed receiver that can fight for deep balls from Aaron Rodgers and be a threat downfield. In Chark, the Packers would get a speedy playmaker on the outside that would be both a legit deep threat for Rodgers and a threat in the return game. In Gallup, the Packers would get a polished receiver that is physical and able to muscle his way to receptions downfield.
Connor Williams/Will Hernandez: Both Williams and Hernandez had first-round hopes in the draft as offensive linemen. Coming out of UTEP, Hernandez played guard his entire collegiate career and is a natural athlete for a big man. Williams comes out of Texas where he played tackle, but projections at the NFL level are for him to move to guard. If Gutekunst is looking to bolster the offensive line early, a selection here wouldn’t surprise me.
Tyrell Crosby: A tackle with size and power, Crosby could make a great addition to the line at right tackle if the staff decides to take that route. He would likely come to the team with the need to work on his footwork, but his size and strength are huge assets and his handwork in pass protection is great. If Gutekunst has made the decision to move on from Bulaga, adding a right tackle early in the draft would make a ton of sense.
Ogbonnia Okoronkwo: While not possessing the prototypical height and weight of an EDGE rusher at the NFL level, Okoronkwo comes out of Oklahoma with the potential to thrive in the right system. He has a versatile package of pass rush moves to get to the quarterback and shows great power when locked up with tackles. In what most consider to not be a deep class at EDGE in 2018, Gutekunst may look to strike on one tonight while the iron is hot.
Lorenzo Carter: Carter entered the Georgia program as one of the top recruits in the nation out of high school, but didn’t excel right away with the program. After finishing his Bulldog career strong as a flexible outside linebacker, he comes to the draft as a threat at the EDGE position. He showed a knack through college for forcing fumbles and shows quickness off the line in his ability to get to the quarterback. As with Okoronkwo, striking on an EDGE rusher in the second round may be the route that Gutekunst takes.
Ronnie Harrison: Harrison comes out of Alabama as a speedy punisher in the defensive backfield as a strong safety. He would bring versatility in coverages and in blitz packages dialed up by Mike Pettine. His scouting report shows that he excels in using his size to cut off routes and knock away passes with his ability to read the eyes of the quarterback. With the departure of Morgan Burnett, adding another safety to the mix may be something that Pettine sways Gutekunst to accomplish high in this draft.

Forget Landry! Draft Carter! Carter will go before Landry! Later @45, if this comes down between Landry and Sutton. Sutton is the PICK! Zone Blocking happens in Round 4.

Landry’s poor 2017 likely was due to chronic injuries beyond the ankle which has been his excuse.
His greatest strength is his burst off the snap and bend around blockers. Now teams are discovering he may have bad knees and a bad back? There goes his burst and bend!

Yep, I stayed up until past 4:30am to listen in (I'm in the UK).
There was a slight delay going on though as Sky TV over hear was running the draft live and I was getting the draft results quicker than you, which I found a bit odd. On the whole though it was very entertaining.

Take Anthony Miller WR Memphis. He would play immediately...and play alot.
Aaron would love him running his impecable routes. While he runs a 4.5, he’s more like a 4.3 guy with his ability to get open with amazing fakes while running routes.
Caught a ton of passes and produced big time every year in college.
Safe, productive, home run pick.

I would consider 49 and 67 from Indy for that pick...essentially gets you equal value for where it would've fallen this year.
Based on trade/draft value charts, the sum of all of the Packers' day three picks barely crack the end of round 2. I can't believe on a practical level that they couldn't get into round 2 on less than that, but that's what the values say.

We have no track record with Gutekunst as a GM. The only thing we know about him is from last night. And that is that he is willing to make the trades.
I think we can expect them to move more tonight. They have a lot of lower picks. I bet they will use some of those tonight.
Perhaps they will trade down from the 45 to get a 3rd round. Or perhaps they will use their 1st round from next year for picks this year.
We only have 1 pick tonight as of now, but I have a feeling we will have more then 1 pick by the end of the night.

I've been surprised several times already by this Packers draft, but I would be surprised again if they trade that 2019 round 1 pick this year. Most teams discount next years pick about 50%. BG seams to be into wheeling and dealing for value. He's taking a page directly from Bill Belichick's book with this trade. BB fleeced other teams for years by trading for future years picks.
One thing I can say about BG is he's not playing like a beginner or a TT clone.

When he traded down I was like WTF. But right after I thought about and remembered they had a lot of picks, I turned my thinking in that they might look to trade back up. When he did I thought it was a great move.
And in the end it worked great.
We clearly don't have a Thompson clone. No way would have Thompson traded picks like that.

That's what I've been saying, JJJB--this was a total Belichik move. I liked TT overall, but his unwillingness to trade for futures (especially taking Harrell instead of a first rounder! ) made me crazy. Belichik used to get several year's worth of additional picks out of futures trades, and it all starts with one extra first rounder. Hopefully, that is what Gute is thinking as well.

Guys, In defense of Ted he was working with low draft positions for the most part. Not much value for trading up. Plus, Ted really did not have any trading partners over the last half of his tenure. Curse of success. Gute has trading partners in the Browns and Seahawks. All from the Ron Wolf tree, do not underestimate that. Trust is hard earned in the NFL. The 'Hoodie' has a long track record. Other GM know what they are getting. NFL rules and the CBA make player trades very difficult, so most GM of other teams sub their future draft choices for players. That's like eating your seed corn. No seed, no future crops no GM job. Wolf never traded his picks unless it was part of a player deal, and he always got a future choice back. Belichik does the same, very old school. With the NFL the way it is, I expect Gute is more Thompson than Wolf.

I am not making any predictions. iamgrute said they been scouting Alexander for a long time only he didn't know it. Lets look at what we have, King ,Alexander, TW, House, Ha HA, Jones, Pipkins, Hawkins, the secondary seems pretty good for now. We still have 11 picks with a chance to move up and a lot of talent out there. I'll just let the professionals do there job and not second guess it. .We are just fans, professional fans.

Someone has mentioned that the Pack now have two 1st round picks in 2019.
Trade one of next year’s first round picks (conditionally the lowest/worst of the two). This should get a mid-2nd round pick tonight and a mid-3rd round pick for this weekend. Or a very high 2nd round pick tonight and a low 3rd round pick.
That would give us 2 picks this second round plus one pick in the 3rd round.
I don't know enough about the prospects to know how highly valued the Packer's feel the remaining players are. But that could net us WR, EDGE, OL (and our new CB) all within the top 100 of this year's prospects.
A bold move maybe, reckless maybe? But I would find it exciting!

it is one of those things that can be judged better with a crystal ball; however, i would strongly recommend keeping the 2 first round picks for 2019, along with all of next years choices (btw, it is unlikely that the Packers will get comp picks next year), because we do not yet know the needs of next year's team, but, with 2 2019 first rounders, there is a lot of flexibility. i know people don't want to go there now, but, it is possible that the Packers will be in the market for an elite QB or pass rusher next year.. better have the draft capital to meet that need.

I really hope that we keep our 2 1st rounders that we have next year!!! What a great draft next year would bring!!! I realize that the new generation has a “live for the moment” mindset as they don’t see a future for themselves and if this thought process continues, they will NOT have a future! However, the Packers DO have a future and 2 1st round picks would certainly brighten it! We have done more with less (picks) in previous years, so why not play our current hand and work through the season, get to the playoffs, win win win and look forward to another, even greater year, next year? At my age (66), next year may not be there for me but, I’m willing to risk that and begin a new legacy for Packer fans for years to come!!! We can draft wisely and well and we’ll have a great season this year and REALLY look forward to an exciting future... just sayin’... ;~€)

I don't watch the NFL draft. The only college football I ever watch is my alma mater Badgers so I don't know who any of these guys are before they hit the NFL. But I do find this draft watching an amazing phenomenon.
While baseball has begun and basketball and hockey are in playoffs more people are watching the annual divvying of college prospects into the NFL. Amazing. It is a real testament to Goodell and his team and indicates to what extent football is king in this country.
It is also easily the most over analyzed event of the year. There are approximately 84,000 "analysts" on various television channels performing mock drafts by the googleplexians.
And of course there ha to be snap grades right now. In reality we don't know how good this draft was for a few year when we see how the players perform but there has to be a grade now. I find this so amusing. By comments here there are some people who have apparently given up on the season in April because they favored a different pick. The experts are all giving the Packers a high grade for getting additional picks and the guy they targeted all along. So to say there is a difference of opinion is like saying some people like Trump and some people don't. A bit of an understatement.
Not to the website, for those of us that don't give much for the 500th analysis of who the Packers may pick before the draft, how about articles rehashing drafts 4 years ago or so and give it an actual grade now? Anyway, can't wait for actual football action - go Pack!

But I never miss a Badgers game even if its just listening to Matt Lepay streaming on the radio. Never missed a Packer game. usually I find em streaming somewhere since they don't show here unless its a national game. What else can I tell you bout my life since you're so fascinated :)

LayingTheLawe, I somewhat agree with most of what you are saying as I don't watch college ball (at all) and really don't give a damn about mock drafts. Where we differ is that you couldn't pay me to watch baseball, basketball or hockey. I'd rather paint the kitchen (and I don't want to do that, lol.). The NFL Draft when I was a lad wasn't really 'a thing' for the media. That it is over-hyped is obvious. Fans are fans. Many fans are fickle and will say stuff in April that they will forget and/or deny later. Hey, that's okay. If you had spent more time on the CHTV website you would know that there HAVE been articles going over past drafts many, many times. It's the off-season. To use the tired saying, "It is what it is.". I personally am very happy when the Packers actually are drafting as it's the time when I actually spend some time learning about who the new players are instead of the (usually wrong) projected draft picks for them. Other fans are Draftniks and love the buildup. To each their own. We are all fans in our own way. The older I get the more I enjoy the buildup to the 'real' season (mini-camp, new player interviews, u-tube highlights of the new guys, training camp, pre-season games, etc.). I used to want to just get to the season, but now I'm reluctant to wish days of my life away, lol.

I haven't watched a basketball game in years either, but my ex was a hockey player so I watch that when its playoffs. I find it fascinating that football is so king that their draft will outdraw other sports playoffs. Plus all the difference in opinion - the same pick is fantastic or terrible depending who sees it.

Interested to see what he does here. You can count on him moving around some how. I don't believe he will trade the 2019 first rounder. If there are a lot of people left on his board by the 45th pick I wouldn't be surprised if he traded down to pick up a third rounder. I would be pleased with that if he wants to trade some of the 4-7 picks to get into the third round it's going to take an awful lot and I don't think he wants to do that. I would love to see them get any of the receivers left (Sutton/Miller/chark etc.) Just not sure if they will be there at 45. I would be happy with OL but I don't believe they will take OL in the second round. Lorenzo Carter would be awesome to grab, but there are other LB they can target. Lot of option here but I think they end up trading down getting a LB then scooping up a WR in the third possibly St. Brown.

there's a year to evaluate Deshaun Kizer's true value and 2 R1 picks to get an elite talent if one exists next year and the need arises. This is perhaps the facet that people who didn't like the Saints trade didn't consider.
If the Packers are able to get a good deep threat WR this year to add to the Jimmy Graham acquisition then A-Rod must be licking his chops at the weapons at his disposal and have any doubts about the franchises willingness to back him dispelled.
Having just bought a stake in the Bucks I don't think that his first intention is to bail out of GB - he knows how parochial Wisconsinites are!
Side note: The addition of Martavis Bryant to Oakland suggests that Jordy may have been an insurance policy all along, as he's now the clear number #3 on the depth chart out there

We can always trade some of next year's picks for picks in the wnd or 3rd this year as long as it's not from the 1st round.
Unless the Browns or Colts would trade their 2 early 2nds for the Saints 1st or a 2nd and 2 3rds like TT gave up to get back into the 1st round for Clay Matthews.
Anyway you slice it, Gute has many options tonight. I find it very hard to believe we will have 10 picks for day 3 when the night is over. Hopefully we come out of day 2 with at least one very good player.

With 5 QB's, 6 OL's and 3 RB's going in the first round there's a lot of talent at positions of interest to the Packers still available.
My round 2 "progression" would still be BPA but with an underlying drift towards the following order:
1) Deep threat WR
2) EDGE rusher
3) D-Lineman
4) CB
If no-one with elite speed or good consistent route running is available when the Packers are on the clock in R2 then look to an EDGE prospect - and if the good value prospects and R1 sliders for EDGE are already snapped up then look at the D-lineman (as it is likely that a Maurice Hurst type of player is still there). Failing this then revisit what is considered a deep "value" CB class.
I'm trusting the packers ability to pick R4 O-line gems by not explicitly targeting one in the 2nd. This may be hubris, but looking back it seems to be GB's talent here.

With Jordy gone, Randall entering a contract year and the number of solid receivers still on the board, I wonder if tactically a WR would be GB's preference.... and only a premature run on WR drafts above #14 would alter this inclination.

I've been following the posts on several of these stories. What people fail to realize is that first pick on day three is essentially a third rounder, albeit late...with the added time of overnight to evaluate the talent that fell through the cracks. As Gutekunst probably learned from Ted's acquisition of that pick once before, I believe that will be held onto. If the Pack is to acquire a third rounder tonight, it will be from trading back (from "13" tonight). A few spots won't matter tonight. As many have alluded to, the talent is especially suited for rounds two and three.

The ability to take hours and hours to assess the pick and potential trades as opposed to minutes can not be overstated. It's great to have time to think and assess without the pressures of the clock- especially if teams' boards have become a bit scrambled due to unexpected ripples made by other teams.

I see them taking Gesicki. Dude is a freak athlete and will allow the packers to run 4 wide(2WR and 2TE) and also use the running game at the same time.

At 45, I'd love to see TE Dallas Goedert, S Justin Reid, or one of the top WRs on the board.
I don't hate the idea of dropping a few spots for an OL, but I think there will be solid value at one of these other positions at 45.

In reference to obtaining the additional #1 pick from the Saints for next years draft lets hope a Bust to Boom effect like 1991/1992 happens again;

Would like to see the Packers go after D.J. Shark in second round. Shark ran a 4.34, 40 and brings the speed at wide receiver to take the top off any defense.

The trade of our 3rd last night is going to kill our ability to get the WR we want/need in Round 2. It'll be unlikely to see Sutton or Miller make it to 45. Those are the 2 you want. The rest in Round 2? No thanks. Here comes James Washington because the better ones will be gone. Kind of like panicking and getting Alexander because Minkah and Ward were gone.
Curious to see if we'd go Gesicki if the WR's are gone? I think Brian should trade back and pick up a late 3rd if we can't get a top WR.
Big question is will that 1st rounder from New Orleans still be ours after the first few picks of the 2nd?

I absolutely LOVE doubling up the CB spot with Josh Jackson after Jaire Alexander.
Two years ago, they were forced to rely on LaDarius Gunter as their top CB after injuries ate away their depth. Now their top 5 are (in no particular order): King, Alexander, Jackson, Williams & House. They'll round out the room with a younger guy either on the roster now or via UDFA and keep 4 of the Safeties.
Good to go at DB and they can look to add some offense or pass rush

Highly rated CB who lasted quite a while. CB is no longer a problem. Davon House? Didn't need him.
This was a good spot for Jackson in the draft, but I'd rather have had a WR (Anthony Miller) or an edge guy (Lorenzo Carter) at that spot.

I get where you're coming from wanting WR or pass rusher. There are guys worthy of being drafted now available at those positions of need. I would add TE (Dallas Goedert) or OL (Connor Williams) to your two names. I would have been happy with any of those choices.
But drafting a guy that was linked to them in round 1 at 45 is good value. And a good sign that Gute will grab value when it is staring him in the face. In the end, a drafter that always bows to value is going to come out ahead of the game. I love how Gute is navigating his first draft through his first two picks.
Now, I'd like to see him get that 3rd back without sacrificing the extra 1 he acquired yesterday.
