Love Getting More Trust from LaFleur

QB gets control of game-ending situations.

The Green Bay Packers played a lot of close games in 2023.  Several of them came down to a possession in the final minutes.   Situations where Jordan Love was being relied upon to lead the team down the field with the clock winding down, in an attempt to score the come from behind touchdown, or at least get the team into position to kick a field goal.

The results for the first year starter were mixed at best.  In week two against the Falcons, the Packers got the ball on their own 25 yard line with 57 seconds left to play, trailing by one point.  Love threw four consecutive incomplete passes in a 25-24 loss.  The following week, Love led a dramatic comeback from a 17 point deficit in the fourth quarter, including the winning touchdown throw to Romeo Doubs with 2:59 remaining to pull out an 18-17 victory.

Against the Raiders, Love, trailing by four with under two minutes to play, engineered a fairly impressive drive to the Las Vegas 35 yard line, but then threw an interception in the end zone.  Against the Broncos Love had the ball first and ten on his own 25 with 3:50 to play, down by two.  After six plays he was intercepted at midfield to end the game.

In week ten Green Bay trailed the Steelers by four, taking the ball on their own 19 yard line with 59 seconds to play.  Again, Love moved the team impressively down the field on six plays, advancing to the Pittsburgh 16 yard line.  But on second and ten Love was picked again resulting in another loss.  But then against the Chargers, trailing by four, Love piloted a masterful seven play drive culminating with the winning TD pass to Doubs with  2:33 on the clock.

Playing the Giants, Love took over after a late fumble and presided over a nine play drive, ending with a scoring pass to Malik Heath to take a one point lead with 1:36 left.  This time the defense let down, allowing the Giants to kick a walk-off field goal in the infamous “Tommy DeVito” game.  At Carolina, Love took the Packers sixty yards in eight plays for the go-ahead field goal with 22 seconds left to play.  Finally, there was the painful failure at San Francisco in the divisional playoff game where Love threw across the middle late and was intercepted to end the season.

As you can see, Love was not terrible in the clutch, but he wasn’t consistently good either.  It should be pointed out Love was not solely responsible for the failures.  Receivers often ran the wrong route or dropped an accurate pass.  There were offensive line breakdowns and defensive collapses.  But the QB is usually held accountable for the final result.  That’s why they make the big bucks.

Mindful of that, Matt LaFleur has his fifth year veteran calling his own plays in two minute drills during this training camp.  “I just think it’s good for him to be in an uncomfortable situation and get that experience,” LaFleur said Thursday.  Just as they were was last season, the results in this camp have been mixed.  Love has led the first team offense on some impressive scoring drives, but has also thrown some picks and missed a few open receivers.  “It’s kind of a work in progress,” LaFleur allows.

The head coach and offensive play caller is still getting to know his second year starter, and letting number ten call his own stuff is helping the relationship.  “Number one, I want to see what he likes, and what he’s thinking, and why he’s thinking it.  I think that’ll help us moving forward when we get into games.”

When a play caller and his quarterback become of one mind and rhythm in a game, it can be a beautiful thing.  A good example came in Green Bay’s thumping of the Cowboys in the wild card round last January.  Love led touchdown drives of twelve, ten and eight plays, on his way to a six touchdown performance.  There was not a single delay of game or false start penalty on the offense.  The timing and sync of plays coming in gave Love plenty of time to make the call in the huddle, and then read the defensive formation prior to the snap.  His execution was flawless, as indicated by his near-perfect passer rating.

The schedule is tougher this year.  Winning close games will be critical to any deep playoff run.  No doubt many will once again come down to a last minute possession.  This year LaFleur may trust his signal caller to call his own plays during those drives.  The ground work for that green light is being laid right now.  It’s the latest step in Jordan Love’s evolution into the next Green Bay championship quarterback.

Well, he should be getting more trust. Growing pains were to be expected, and by the end of the season, Love and his offensive supporting cast had advanced by leaps and bounds. Some of the earlier games where we struggled, sometimes due to conservative play-calling, are no longer relevant.

I'm hoping we won't have to rely on so many late game winning drives, anyway; if the offense functions the way we expect it to with second-year growth AND the defense can be in a position to both shut the door on third down and come up with more impact plays, then maybe we can be avoiding drama and milking the clock late in the fourth quarter.

After the end of the 49ers game I'm not sure endgame situations are where you want him making his own decisions. How about starting with less stressful moments, like 2nd and 4?

Calling all the plays in the 2 minute will be great experience for Love.

Hafley will be all the D plays in the 2 minute too, according to Matt. Made me wonder: During Camp does MLF get involved calling D plays with Hafley...ask the DC to give the O certain looks during 11 on 11? (I know during the season, Hafley will be making the D calls.)

Ken's article also highlighted 6 games where the O gave the team a lead, but the D gave it back late in the 4th quarter, requiring late game comebacks.

It will be a great improvement in overall team performance this season if the Defense can hold at least half of the leads late in games.

I wonder if they'll let him call plays in preseason for a half like they did Rodgers?

You always want the ball in the hand of your best player in the clutch. I thought he did real well the last half of the season.

The Play That Ended The Season in SF.........I've watched that way too many times to put too much blame on him. Yes, he threw the ball when he could have just thrown it away. That's on him and his inexperience in those situation. But IMO, the real breakdown on that play came when Nijman, who was in for an injured Tom, got beat by Bosa (who's a really good pressure guy) and closed quickly on Love.

I wonder how things might have happened differently if Tom had been there, just like I wonder about the playoff games where our season ends with replacement linemen on the field. That #8 or #10 OL might be the guy blocking Joey Bosa.

LH, you mentioned needing to return to Chippewa County in August to check in with your parole officer. What dates will you be in the area? If the stars align, maybe we could meet, engage in a brief but intense fistfight, and then shoot the breeze for an hour or so.

I'm not allowed to associate with known felons or people of questionable repute. If life works out the way I'd like, I'm going to be rolling through Barron County at about 2:00 on Thursday . I have dead ancestors I want to visit on the way to visit my little sister. I'd love to have a beer and a sandwich but I'm on a super-tight schedule that involves me driving 12 hours at 70 mph average for two straight days. And then back again.

If something changes, I'll certainly mention it to you.

Oof, safe travels, and be kind to the LEOs in Barron County. They've had a rough road the last year or so.

They still make him do his visits in person? What is this, the 1980s?? I guess it's true, anything North of Stevens Point might as well be in Appalachia!

You hit it. Nijman was paid to be the swing guy, but didn't show up in crunch time.

There were a lot of games last year when the defense made mediocre/poor QB's look like the second coming of Johnny Unitas. Baker Mayfield had a perfect passing game against them. Bryce Young had by far his best game of the season. And when the game was on the line, the defense was usually "prevent", playing soft coverage to stop big plays. And instead, they'd just give up big chunks and allow the opposing team to eat up yardage and score quickly. Love, then felt the pressure to perform, and took chances he shouldn't have been forced to make.

NO - Qb will call his own plays!
Thats just hilarious when everyone
"Blamed Rodgers" for only seeing Adams.
Can't wait for the press conference
when #10 says the game plan stunk.
But we're in the days of how to spin it.

Rodgers had Adams as a #1 Wr and a few #4 WR's at best....The #4's did get open at times and rarely thrown to in must have situations....like between 1st and 3rd downs. Gute never got a decent #2 WR when we were competing in the playoffs. We have about 5 -#2 WR's now though and the window is wide open instead of slamming shut. GPG

I'd make a wager that Gute would've gotten Rodgers some better receiving options, had Rodgers not demanded having "his buddies" be on the roster..?

I have a suspicion that Love will own up to any poor decisions he makes on the field of play, or at least, he won't use intentionally ambiguous language to answer questions the media asks in an attempt to allow the impression that the HC is the guy who made the shitty decision.

I know you can't fathom it, but Rodgers really is a POS that way. I don't see that in Love. Will Love turn into a man who intentionally words answers in pressers to thrust his coach or teammates onto the sword he should by all rights be falling on? Time will tell.. but he certainly doesn't seem that type at the moment.

Yeah I mean could Love turn into a Diva with $220+ in the bank? Sure. Will he? Doubt it. Even after a SB and some MVP's I dont see Love changing much. People forget he isnt a So Cal boy. Rodgers comes from a different background, a different school, hes a different cat. Rodgers wasnt just an arrogant SOB because he was rich and had accolades to fill any china cabinet. He was an SOB because, well, he IS an SOB. A So Cal spoiled brat SOB.

Personally I like Rodgers; he is who he is. I dont think the guy has an ill thought on anyone. Just done you dare have one on him.

Love will probably stay true to form. So anyways, let the guy call plays.

I don’t know about all that, but in addition to what LeFleur said, there’s also just putting him in uncomfortable situations down there when he’s on his own in the red zone or two minute, doing it all himself.
