Kirk Cousins As Backup? Sign Me Up

Kirk Cousins backing up Jordan Love makes a lot of sense for both sides.

We are firmly in one of the slowest periods on the NFL calendar (but don’t tell the NFL that). The draft is still basically a month away. Free agency is all but picked over, and while teams might continue to bargain shop or release players, the vast majority of difference-makers are signed. There was, however, one interesting nugget of a rumor that made its way onto the rumor mill this week regarding one free agent who is still available, and he was tied to the Green Bay Packers. That would be free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins.

The Packers came into the offseason with, in my opinion, four major holes on their roster they needed to address: defensive line, cornerback, offensive line, and backup quarterback. Maybe not exactly in that order, but pretty darn close. They have already addressed the first three with the signings of Javon Hargrave, Benjamin St-Juste, and the re-signing of center Sean Rhyan. Hargrave should be able to get back to his havoc-wrecking ways in the middle of the line under Jonathan Gannon. St-Juste should, at the very least, push Carrington Valentine and provide good depth snaps off the bench, all while playing a mean special teams role. Lastly, Sean Rhyan played well last season once thrust into the starting center role after Elgton Jenkins went down with an injury. With a full offseason developing chemistry with Jordan Love and further acclimating himself to the position, he should be much better in 2026. Unfortunately, they have not done enough (or anything) at backup quarterback.

The current depth chart behind Love consists of Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord. I wrote an article for this website a few weeks back looking at a few options the Packers might consider adding at the spot, but none of those players have yet to be connected to Green Bay in any way. Not at any point did I think Kirk Cousins would be in play. First, I didn’t think that Cousins would be interested in a backup role behind an established starter. Second, I didn’t think Brian Gutekunst would be open to devoting serious dollars to a position that is already very top-heavy, with Love’s contract firmly on the books. This week proves otherwise. At the owners meeting in Arizona, Gutekunst was asked about the possibility of adding Cousins.

“Yeah, we’ve discussed a lot of those options. That’s a guy who’s got a lot of pelts on the wall in this league. So we’ve certainly discussed all those kinds of things, and we’ll see where it goes.”

Classic Gutey—hinting he might be interested without fully committing. However, it is more than I would have thought he would say. The fact of the matter is, the Packers really should be interested in adding an experienced quarterback to back up Love. Of all the options out there, whether it be via free agency, trade, or the draft, they don’t come much more experienced than Kirk Cousins. He is a veteran of 167 career games, throwing for over 44,000 yards, 298 touchdowns, and 131 interceptions. He also has experience as a backup, which is important to note. He, of course, started his career as the backup to Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III in Washington. He would later go on to become their starter once RGIII suffered his career-altering injury. During that run in Washington, his QB coach was none other than Matt LaFleur.

Just last season, he was the backup to Michael Penix Jr., and due to injuries, Cousins guided the Falcons to a 5–3 record in eight starts. In that eight-game stint, he showed he still has the ability to play at a high level. He threw for 1,721 yards and 10 touchdowns with a 68.2% completion percentage and a 103.8 passer rating. His best performance came during a Week 15 primetime game in Tampa Bay, where he led the Falcons to an upset win over the playoff-minded Buccaneers with a 373-yard, three-touchdown performance. To have a backup with the ability to come into a game and play at that level would be completely game-changing. Love has not been the picture of health in his young career as the Packers’ starter, missing time in each of the last two seasons. It was just last season when he missed an important late-season game against the Ravens, forcing Malik Willis into action. While he played very well that night, it was not a 373-yard, three-touchdown performance.

For as much as he showed he still has life in his arm, the most glaring issue with his play style is more evident than ever at this stage of his career. That would be his lack of mobility. The 37-year-old was never the most fleet of foot, but has declined even more in that area since the torn Achilles he suffered two years ago with the Vikings (at Lambeau, nonetheless). If the Packers’ offensive line proves to be shaky again this season, as it was a year ago, Cousins might struggle to play at the level he’s accustomed to. This Packers offense might also struggle to adjust to his style. Love is not the most mobile QB in the world, but he is more than able to elude rushers and make plays outside of the pocket. Their game plans when Willis was the signal-caller were completely centered around his playmaking ability with his legs. But if there is anyone out there who could develop a plan to make a quarterback successful, it’s Matt LaFleur.

Of course, it will all come down to the dollars and cents of it all. Lucky for the Packers, the Falcons are still on the hook for a large portion of Cousins’ salary. Any contract he signs will come off that dollar amount, so they might be able to get him relatively cheap. Wherever he ends up signing will probably be post-draft so he can scan the landscape and see what his best opportunity will be. Once the dust settles, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the former division rival backing up Jordan Love in 2026. With familiarity with Matt LaFleur, familiarity with the division, and the chance at winning a Super Bowl, both sides could do a lot worse.

What was the price?

Actually a good move for the Raiders in case their rookie QB pick, likely Mendoza, isn't ready to start and needs some development to start the season.

I will answer my own question...just found it...Cousins will bank $20 Mil this year. $1.3 M paid by the Raiders (pocket change)...the remainder by the Falcons (Ouch).

Well, the Falcons' boneheaded management of their quarterback situation gets them what they deserve. I agree, though--Cousins and the Raiders win on this one.

Former Redskins team and the vikings teams had a lot to do with making a mediocre QB, that rich. The best fit for Kark was in LV. Mark will mentor their first round pick, in Mendoza, and will not get any meaningful snaps, in close games. Kark will be laughing, all the way to the bank, while not taking the hits, from opposing defenses, every game. Also a bit funny is that the vikings did not want Kark, to be JJ McCarthy's mentor. I guess the vikings do not have that "shrewdness", anymore, now that Kwesi was fired.

LP. i think i heard on WSN that only 11 million was guaranteed.

I wonder if they start Cousins, while Mendoza sits for a season and learns the NFL ropes. 🤷‍♂️

I hope so or at least part of the season if he starts picking things up early. Mendoza looks like he can be a great starter, but I worry that he will be rushed. Cousins could be a perfect mentor. Like when Kurt Warner started ahead of Eli Manning.

Raiders are starting to put some pieces together on Offense. They have a great young TE and RB.

Starting Cousins, in Vegas , over Mendoza, means the Raiders are throwing away another season. Can they afford that?

Are they, or are they actually doing the right thing for their presumed draft pick to succeed? They aren’t likely to contend this year if you look at their roster overall. Their hope is to rebuild a platform for the coming years. Perhaps Brady knows that protecting a rookie in those circumstances may be the best route to maximizing his value? Perhaps the Packers model has some influence, but perhaps it’s self awareness: Brady himself sat for his first year.

One thing admirable about Cousins is he did some very shrewd contracts over the years. HOF contracts. They showed him da mooony alright. Good for him.

Lol...yea he did.

He gave out the finger, bet on himself, and got himself paid, often.

321 million...Not bad for a guy who only won 1 playoff game.

Well played.

Kirk Cousins and Sam Bradford. Their agent is a genius.

If i remember correctly, Bradford's 50 million guaranteed in his rookie deal, was one of the catalyst in reworking (lowering) 1st round draft pick pay scale in the 2011 CBA agreement.

That, and JaMarcus Russell's 36 million guaranteed debacle.

Ha you’re right. Washington fans probably hate him. Is he the only guy to play through the Tags to Free Agency?

It's time to draft Cole Payton. Pick #160.
I am mocking a Left handed Ken Stabler to the pack.

Tom would protect his back better.
According to McShay
he's a very" accurate " QB .

He's a guy to convert to a TE, or a big safety. He will never be a starter in the NFL. Maybe Payton thinks he's a Tysom Hill. I watched ND State 3-4 times last autumn. He can give the run option, get the 1:1 and run the short passing game. He doesn't have the drive on the deep out like Love showed in college. See if Tom makes it through the year. I would draft his replacement.

Love this kid, but I think he's "the next Taysom Hill" and will make a position change in the NFL. If I had to guess, I suspect he could be had later than 160 at 201 (rd 6) or even later.

I whole hardily agree with Cole Payton. Or, Taylen Green; as both are legitimate dual threats at running and passing. While Green has the edge at speed (under 4.3) Cole was actually used as a running QB in short yardage or goal line situations His forty was 4.5. We need a mobile QB. Does anyone realistically believe that are O-Line will be any better than last year? I would really love to have either of these QB s as a backup. It is nice that someone is actually thinking about how we replace Malik.
Also, Cousins is now a Raider who will likely pick a QB with their first pick in the draft...Mendoza.

Payton needs a lot of work. Unfortunately he’s in a poor class and likely to be taken sufficiently high that he’s a poor bet to stash on the PS. He’s not a pick for this year really. As such a bad fit in this draft for us.

Then you're saying the ratings are wrong.
I wouldn't draft a QB I was going to stash.
A qb is never a bad fit.
Too many people think we have to many needs.
What really has changed since last year.
The team is getting everyone back. As planned.
WE lost back-ups.
And as for the walkers- Too many wanted them gone.

Klubnik is #5 right behind Beck who is over-rated. Scouts still looking at Payton as maybe a backup guy down the road, or a conversion project.

I’m saying he’s a hugely athletic but very raw QB. As such he’s not a good candidate to help as our number 2 this year. He’s a long shot high upside guy who needs to be a 3rd QB while he tries to be more. However, if he’s picked up mid round, he’s going to be hard to stash than from desperate coaches or ones who will use him as a gadget. Remember, the Colts spent a first on Richardson. Let’s not be that team.

Others have floated our Taysom Hill experience. There are in fact equally athletic similar prospects in Green and Harris who likely go later or as UDFAs. If we want that kind of long term project, they are a much better fit in terms of draft capital and potential to retain them on the PS.

Getting a good back up QB has become a real necessity for the Packers now that Love signed his big contract and misses multiple games each of the past 2 seasons . I’m not going to hold my breath this coming season either so hopefully Gute comes up with a proven reliable back up . Man I used to love Favre . You’d have to drag him off the field to keep him from missing a snap .

Agree G&B. If Love goes down it probably means our OL is still not where we need them to be. In which case I don’t think Cousins is a good fit (Plus too Spendy). I think we will find someone who can get out of harms way. I think we will plug the hole now and perhaps in the draft but be eyeing roster cuts toward the beginning of the season to find our QB2.

It would have been great for the Packers to have scooped up Cousins as a backup. Apparently the Raiders were quick on the draw. I wonder if Gute was even interested in signing him. Thanks, Since '61

You'd like to think Gute was in the mix there somewhere.

Based on what i've heard, the Raiders signing was a no brainer, with little guaranteed money, and a easy out.

If Green Bay was in it, Cousins would know he wasn't starting.
I would think, that Cousins would want to start, but that's speculative.

"If the Packers’ offensive line proves to be shaky again this season, as it was a year ago, Cousins might struggle to play at the level he’s accustomed to. "

If the Packers' OL plays like it did a year ago, I don't think it's going to matter much who the backup is because they'll be home in January.

Cousins signing with the Raiders makes perfect sense. Cousins can start and give Mendoza some time to understand the pro game in what will be a complex offense under Kubiak. Cousins can be this year's Daniel Jones on the comeback trail.

Cousins in Green Bay would have been like the year Jim McMahon signed with Green Bay as back up to Brett Favre. I can't imagine what Mike Holmgren did to keep those two under control. McMahon's topper was when he wore his Chicago Bears sweater when the Packers went to the White House after the Packers won the Super Bowl.
