Jets 30 Packers 10: Game Balls & Lame Calls

Packers look flat, boring and unprepared in preseason debut.

This is your giant disclaimer that, as we all know, this was a preseason game. This game, in the grand scheme, does not matter.

That being said, whew boy.

In what can only be described as a wet, defeated sound of a whoopee cushion deflating (you know what I'm talking about), the Packers return to Lambeau Field was not a triumphant one. It was a far cry from last season's preseason debut, in which Jordan Love hit Dontayvion Wicks for a touchdown on the third play of the game. Believe it or not (it's true though), that 65 yard pass was more yards than all four quarterbacks managed to combine for on Saturday night. The defense was gashed, the offense could not stop holding, and everyone who watched that game probably walked away with a bad taste in their mouth. It being preseason, the team is able to walk away from this bout without a blemish on their regular season record, and really, if the team is going to get their ass kicked, it's probably better that it happens during the preseason. Last year it happened in Denver, and the team responded well with a win against the Ravens the following week. The Packers will attempt to do it again, beginning with a joint practice against the Colts, to be held on Aug. 14.

Game Balls

Colby Wooden & the entire second team defensive line

It looks like the offseason weight Colby Wooden put on over the summer has paid it's dividens. Big 96 was everywhere, swatting balls, stuffing runs and producing disruption at every turn. He wasn't alone either, and the entire second team defensive line was by far the best unit the Packers had on the field tonight. Rookie DE Barryn Sorrell had himself a nice game as well, coming on particularly in the third quarter. Nazir Stackhouse followed up on his impressive training camp with an impressive performance, and the undrafted addition appears to be a near-lock to make the final 53 roster. We can keep going, as Warren Brinson and Kingsley Enegbare also contributed nice showings. The Packers lack of depth on the DL was a weakness last season, which makes this group certainly one to keep an eye on as the preseason unfolds.

Daniel Wheilan & Brandon McManus

The Packers newfound stability in the kicking department continued on Saturday night. Brandon McManus has been near-perfect through training camp so far, and nailed his lone field goal attempt tonight. Rookie kicker and Ireland native Mike McNamee, despite arriving in Green Bay on Friday after a lengthy visa issue, handled kickoff duties with seeming ease. Punter Daniel Wheilan was the star, however. His 63 yard punt in the first quarter was impressive enough, but over his six punt workload he averaged 52 yards per.

Amar Johnson's got zip

The Packers may have found themselves another stud UDFA. Johnson was a standout at the FCS level with South Dakota State, amassing over 3000 yards in his time with the Jackrabbits and brought some major pop to a Packers rushing attack that looked as flat as the rest. Contributing the team's only touchdown on the game is probably enough for a game ball all by itself, but Johnson looked good all night. The backfield is crowded on first glance, but with injuries to Lloyd and Wilson, Johnson will continue to get opportunities to showcase his 4.46 speed, and as the team searches for returners in both the punt and kick games, I wonder if Johnson will get more looks there.

Lame Calls

Return of the Drops

It was the talking point all offseason. It was the thing that held the offense back, and it was supposed to be gone. It wasn't though, and the discourse will continue on. Five drops later, and it's items 1,2 and 3 for me. I've heard all the talk about how drops don't usually carry over season to season, but until I see a game with zero drops, it's an issue. Here's the thing too: consistent, recurring drops are mainly a mental issue, and I guarantee that the Packers receivers have heard the discourse themselves. The Malik Heath drop especially, to me, looked like a failure of concentration. Is this an issue the wide receiver room needs to conquer together?

3rd Down Conversions... or lack thereof

Look, I know it's a vanilla playbook. I know there's very little to be found in the way of offensive scheme, or real game planning. But anytime you go 1/10 on third down conversions in a game.is a game that you have to declare as a total disaster. There was a horrifying familiarity to the way the Jets managed to find wide open receivers in the middle of the field over and over and over, while the Packers just couldn't get out of their own way. From penalties, to the aforementioned drops, turnovers and everything in between. Again, for emphasis: 1 for 10 on third downs.

Jacob Monk & Mecole Hardman

On an individual level, there's not many ways to have a worse game than these two did, especially for a pair of players who were trending in the right direction to making the 53 man roster. Hardman especially had a very clear and obvious path, namely punt returns. Hardman's mistakes on return duties came in the second quarter, where first, despite being within the five yard line and with multiple Jets barring down on him, didn't call a fair catch or let the ball roll into the end zone. Instead, the Jets had a touchdown three plays later. Then the muffed punt, leading to another three points. Being the only player on the entire team with Superbowl experience, I had figured the Packers would lean towards keeping Hardman on the team, but with performances like this, that window may be closing.

Monk meanwhile, also turned in a disappointing performance. Three holding penalties and a sack allowed on third down won't earn you any brownie points with Matt LaFluer & Co. Despite being a fifth round pick last season, Monk was a healthy scratch during the stretch of late-season games last year, usually a sign of a player being in the doghouse with the coaches. Monk has seen reps at both center and guard during training camp, but he'll likely need to settle in at a spot and work his whopee cushion off to feel his seat cool down.

Three And Out

-- I was at the preseason game against Denver last year, and I can comfortably say that game was the most frustrating preseason experience in my time as a Packers fan. This one comes close though. The first team looked like they had zero chemistry out there, and it wasn't until the second stringers were playing each other that both teams looked like a real matchup. "Frustrating" is my word of the day, no doubt compounded by this being the first taste of real football we've had since February, and longer still since the Green and Gold have been in Lambeau.

--  Isreal Abanikanda was on kick return duty tonight, and had himself a solid showing in that role. Over five returns, he averaged 29.5 yards with a long of 36. His counterparts on the Jets also had a good day returning the ball, fielding three kicks and averaging 29.6 yards. Wait, why am I mentioning the Jets players? Why am I talking about the number of kick returns? Because they actually happened.

As we all know, the kickoff rules drastically changed before the 2024 season, which led to an epidemic of touchbacks all season long, as teams choose to allow touchbacks that would come out to the thirty yard line, rather than risk an actual return. This offseason, that rule was changed again, this time to move the touchbacks out to the 35 yard line, in order to encourage more returns. Through one game, the rule change seems to have done it's job. In the week one preseason game against the Browns last year, the Packers only had a single return compared to five this year. If there are no notable increase in injuries on kickoff plays, the NFL seems to have struck a happy medium.

--  Avoiding injuries is the name of the game in preseason, but we found out before the game even started that Jayden Reed is in a walking boot. It's unclear what exactly the injury there is, though Adam Schefter did call it a "sprained foot" on twitter. According to Matt LaFluer, his availability against the Lions is unfortunately in question, and he joins Xavier McKinney in being shut down for the remainder of the preseason. Reed himself described the injury as happening while making a cut at practice.

The Packers escaped the game without any obvious injuries to starters, and hopefully Zanye Anderson, Corey Ballentine and Aaron Mosby's injuries are all minor.

If the lack of intensity on the part of the Packers might be indicative of anything, it is a lack of disciplined footbal. Too many players seemed unprepared, both physically and mentally. It is/was not a good look.

My related problem is the end goal was a fail onoffense. All you really want to do in the preseason is evaluate players. Maybe get some timing, but starters play so little now that I think that ship sailed years ago. On defense, it wasn’t great but I think the evaluation goal was achieved. On offense though, it was such a mess I am not sure you can make many conclusions on players . Monk bad. Fifth RB was interesting. And….. no idea. Waste of half of a game for me.

Monk had a bad day, but at least it wasn’t Myers, who would probably have had five holding penalties and three sacks.

Maybe…..Myers wasn’t as bad as some paint him.

And we should keep working on those punt returns because the cost is so little and the reward is so great.

Two problems we had last night that we wouldn’t have had to have.

Sorry LH, but apples and oranges on the center comparison. Monk isn't the starting center and the proper comparison is Jenkins versus Myers. Monk probably won't make the team if he has more performances like last night.

Monk is clearly playing for the exits. Man...no development at all. In fact the entire OL group was pathetically soft. At least we have a "Butkus" coaching them up. SMH.

Monk is also a back up. He may have been the 3rd choice C going in. An inexperienced bad back up does not excuse a starter. However, perhaps it is time to start asking if there is a common thread: Butkus. That was vanilla offense: simple as can be, and the OL looked like it couldn’t function individually as a unit even then.

The same was largely true of the O as a whole. While LaFlrur deserves lambasting for the overall sloppy, unprepared showing in all phases, the details are down to the coordinator. At least the D seemed to be experimenting somewhat. The O did not even try, so lacks even that excuse.

The bulk of the blame for that dysfunctional showing lies squarely on Stenavich. If we have fixed the D (last night leaves that unresolved), is it only for Stenavich/Butkus to prove we had Barry/Menninga types on O all along? That performance, even in a game that doesn’t count, went a long way to showing why this year likely makes or breaks the LaFleur myth as a HC. After last night, there’s a strong chance his coaching choices on O prove pivotal to his undoing.

How did Jenkins do? He costs 5 times whar Myers did.

I m just messing with the people who couldn’t stop talking about what a catastrophe he is/was. He would have clearly been our best Center last night.

I'd note that Hanson knocked around through last season after the Packers let him go, but he's currently unsigned.

It is ridiculous that you're attempting to salvage your belief that Meyers was- as you put it less than a week ago- "A successful 2nd round draft pick" - by comparing him to a player who is literally at the bottom of the roster and completely unproven.

Meyers was one of the worst starting centers in the NFL in his time as a pro so far.

Comparing Meyers to a player who has never logged a meaningful snap in a regular season NFL game doesn't change what Josh Meyers has been- which is a sub-par starter in the NFL.

Others being worse doesn't make him any better.

My thoughts exactly. How does what Monk does...good or bad...have anything to do with Myers performance last year? Total false equivalence. Monk could turn out to be the worst center in the league. That doesn't improve Myers performance from last year or the need to move on from him. Strange hill to die on.

Myers was every bit as bad as some paint him. Thus, he got a lousy $2 million as a free agent, so I'd say the other teams knew he was lousy as well.

Right. This is your annual reminder that you play how you practice.

If that display last night is what preparation looks like from a "top 5 Coach" after several weeks of practice and setting up team culture, identity and good habits...I can guarantee the players are not going to forget it.

Poor performance creates doubt. Two weeks left to do a 180. I hope LaFleur doesn't back into the regular season like he backed in to the playoffs in January.

A coach can’t control how good his players are but he can control their mindset and focus. If he doesn’t he’s not worth his salt. Glenn had a mediocre roster out there knowing what they were doing and largely executing their responsibilities. It didn’t mean they were better but they played to their ability and they played as coherent units. That’s what coaching is in vanilla football.

It’s the foundation only, but without that foundation. In season, inconsistencies and errors will buyer a team when it matters. In some ways last night represents a telling insight of basic causes of the LaFleur era disappointments. We will look better, but these base level flaws will remain to undermine us, as they have in prior years.

"A coach can’t control how good his players are but he can control their mindset and focus."

Exactly...and it is the major reason for my disappointment and frankly, some concern. A coach cannot manage attitude, he most certainly can manage behavior. The football behaviors on the field last night...after weeks of work...were sloppy, unfocused, preseason games don't matter attitude.

Even Hafley's bunch was off...but at least several players were trying to win plays. I remain very bullish on the DL. Confused why Hafley continues to play Barry Ball soft middle zone expecting different results. Simmons is showing why he is sinking as an NFL player. His on field instincts are slow. (See Hardman on O & STs for reference)

The offense simply was not prepared. Huge indictment for a HC who also is the bona fide OC. His listed OC, Stenovich, has the primary duties to prepare the offense for the next game. Stenovich must be doing what his boss expects, I guess.

In order to beat detroit or anyone else you have to pass the ball to the receiver and said receiver has to have mind in game and be able to catch the ball. Of course LeFluer says thats not a problem since we will run the ball most of the time to keep our crap defense off the field.

I put Wooden in the lame calls category. 11:13 or so in the first quarter, he got absolutely blown off the line and that allowed a huge run. Again around the 10 minute mark. The first one was so bad, I had to rewind to see who it was who got their butt handed to them so thoroughly.

Aside from that, I know it's only one preseason game, but I feel like Hardman just played himself off the roster.

I saw the same play with Wooden getting pushed aside, but I do think he redeemed himself with his play later on. Overall Wooden had a pretty good game. I think the author was right that the second string DL played pretty well.

Agreed on Hardman. If your calling card is as a veteran punt returner and you make bonehead plays like that, you are not long for the roster.

Wooden is essentially a pure rush NT. They have to be very good at getting to a QB to survive in this league because teams will just attack them. They are the designated rushers of the interior. It’s a limited role unless truly elite, at best. We have Wyatt. We hope he can become more than that though, and can probably only afford one. Everyone else must be able to hold up as well.

It is most concerning that the defense looked like a mirror image of Joe Barry's defenses of a few years back. The Jets ability to gash the D line and their receivers looking like they owned the middle of the field brings one to question whether the scheme is even close to being viable.

I am with you, Matt! Packers played zone most of the time and despite numerous slant patterns, never seemed to correct coverage, albeit without most of our secondary starters. But still, did we coach to make adjustments? I really do not know.

Even more so, our vaunted linebacker corp would drop in the zone and watch an opposing player wide-open underneath, receiving a pass, and THEN break to cover. I agree with earlier comments that as a coach you want to build confidence. To me that means you set expectations and PREPARE your players for certain plays vs. letting them figure it out....Yes, even in pre-season, because your opportunities to do so, are limited!

Thank you...right on, right on, right on...

It seems Hafley was trying to fit square pegs into round holes with his LB corps and play read and react zone with his DL doing the disrupting.

I still believe the DL will be better than advertised...until then, do some disguised pressures and stick more closely to the route runners.

Simmons isn't going to help in the soft zone, it seems. His poor instincts are even more exposed. The other Isaiah, McDuffie, has the quickness of semi tractor. Walker has never been a cover LB. And asking Cooper to do it is an absolute waste of his read, react, and hot red missile attack to the ball carrier.

If Hafley was looking for answers in this game...can my LBs patrol and control the middle in the passing game...he has his answer.

The LB core is very good patrolling and controlling the LOS on run plays...and rushing the passer. For now, that should do.

So...that preseason game was the result of preparation and planning from a "Top 5 Coach"?

It was shockingly bad...especially after the Top 5 Coach directed his entire team to "be ready to play". I guess that instruction was just a friendly suggestion.

LaFleur's demand for preseason patty cake tackling and blocking has clearly sunk in...to the entire team. I noticed this immediately in the first quarter when the soft Packers got whacked at the line of scrimmage by the mighty Woody and the Jets. Jets looked very physical.

Aaron Glenn had his team ready to play and he knew it. He looked sternly confident on the East sideline...the coach on the West side spent the entire game in a state of exasperation, arms waving, looking clueless.

I expect the Packers have goals and objectives for the Preseason. Hopefully attainment of them begins next week because Saturday looked like the first OTA practice. However, one recurring theme for LaFleur's Camp is to avoid injuries. Well, that looks to be moot now too. The infirmary is getting crowded.

I need to end on an up note...Amar Johnson needs to get more snaps...many more snaps. Very impressive running behind blocks and decisive cuts to daylight.

Yeah LP, just another game where the Packers came out looking flat and uninspired. This seems to happen with some regularity under LaFleur. Fortunately this one doesn't count but it has also happened when they do count.

Teams often take on the personality of their head coach (see: Dan Campbell and the Lions) and the Packers all too often seem to reflect LaFleur's calm, intellectual demeanor. I think there is fire inside LaFleur, I just wish he would let it out once and awhile. The team needs to see some passion and fire from him. Leadership isn't always about calmly pointing in the right direction.

Intellectual is not a word that comes to mind when LaFleur speaks. Calm I'll give you.

I think the Jets will win all of their preseason games and then revert to being the Jets. I think the Packers could easily lose all their preseason games and then win the North. I hope Reed pops back up quickly.

Final note: the Jets third string QB can play. Sean Clifford cannot.

My scale is other football coaches, not rocket scientists. I think LaFleur is brighter than many football coaches which was my intended metric.

I think Aaron Glenn brings more to the table than the Jets have had in recent coaches. The Jets had an excellent defense last year and just need to find some offense to be a better team. I like your prognosis for the Packers - I still believe in them despite last night.

And yes, Clifford is not very good.

I remain curious what LaFleur sees in Clifford now. I admired his drive to succeed at Penn State...solid leadership. But an NFL QB? No, that was decided last preseason.

Let's not forget that the Jets' roster is starting over fresh with a new staff--they're almost all trying to win jobs. They've also done more hitting and tackling than just about any other team in camp. They're well ahead of most teams at this point in that regard. That said, that should only matter for a couple possessions.

Coaching matters almost as much as talent and drive....because being effective at the former, harnesses the latter.

I like the talent on this team. I am concerned about the team leadership. Who is holding LaFleur accountable now? Who is holding Bisaccia accountable? Does LaFleur manage Hafley? I don't know.

I am not being flippant. Just concerned that the team management is kind of loose and going in independent directions. I mean Bisaccia is Assistant HC...what does he do in this role? Help Stenovich? I doubt he's poking his head into Hafley's meeting and practices.

Ed needs to set the tone for his Franchise. Status Quo is a dangerous path if he wants Championships.

To look at a preseason game and complain about game planning is just plain silly. This game isn't what they prepare for. Winning isn't the purpose of the game, it isn't the 2nd purpose. They had play calls in there you would never see in a regular season. They do this to see how the talent responds to certain situations. On the first 3rd and 5 they had the ends dropping back in coverage, they would never do that in a real game. Relax.

Oh, ok. So the game plan was to get destroyed in all three phases, execute poorly and play like you're doing another LaFleur patty cake practice.

The HC apparently does not agree with you. He knew his team was throughly embarrassed in front of a packed home crowd.

There was no game plan because there wasn't a game. The coaches don't waste time putting together a script for a preseason game. The objective is to get guys in situations to evaluate them. If you know anything about game calling you would have seen that in the 1st series. They don't care about the score, just how individuals are executing. Many times coaches will put in a bad play call just to see how the player reacts. This was just another practice, don't get so worked up over it.

Take whatever a coach says to the media with a grain of salt. That is more for the fans than it is for the team.

Amar Johnson might make this team, but only if Lloyd isn’t healthy. That may not be wise, but that’s the reality, unless that is we start looking at potential over LaFleur’s security blanket tendencies.

Last night saw why it’s nuts to not keep Wilson, without him and Jacobs the between the tackles game falls apart. Brooks is a luxury but he’s not going to do what they do, and last night clearly showed that our O can’t afford not to have that dimension. Brooks is not getting outside the tackles.

Good guys don’t always represent winning choices in football. Being able to do it is what matters. If we keep 4 backs, it may need to be Jacobs/Wilson and Lloyd/Johnson. That’s how you win. Always have weapons at skill positions that can make a difference not merely perform reliably.

Amar Johnson was the ONLY positive of the night. If he keeps this up he should be the #2 backup RB. Of course if Lloyd ever gets healthy he may have something to say about that. It only took a few plays to see that Johnson is a real playmaker. Think of what he could do if we actually had a good offensive line. We didn't last night.

Go back and look at the o-line during Johnson's two big runs. Both runs were to the right, and amounted to Monk (c), Hill (rg) and Belton (rt) blocks. Jacob Monk had a couple of bad plays which I will speak to shortly, but it was not ALL bad. In fact, I will argue those runs, late, by Johnson, were set-up by text book blocks by Monk. His run blocking was fine and he should not have been called for one holding call. Another was debatable, as well. Yet, a pass play play holding call was legit, and Monk's play on the sack however, was poor awareness and foot-speed. Still, he was not the culprit for the Packers poor play on O.

Meanwhile, Engabare was clearly held at least twice, King on another, and Brooks on another. Last, Myers and Tippman both played for the Jets. How many of you heard Myers name called out for missing a block, or our D-line taking advantage of him? Be honest.

My thoughts were to always sign Meyer.
(As long as it was CAP friendly and for back-up.)
I remember how many different centers TT had.
Linsey won out, when the other started for the Browns.
Not to mention Scott Wells and his battles against
Jeff SATURDAY etc. for the job.
If Meyer was bad, They should not have drafted Morgan.
Waiting for jumps that never happen, is Gute's downfall.

True- But the blocking scheme
has everything to do with premium.
Protecting the QB blind side was #1.
MM used zone blocking. Center was #1.
Bulaga was good, but too expensive.
THE PRICE MUST BE RIGHT!!!

Tom got money when the top rushers were hurt.
And Jenkins and others flopped.
But they still moved Jenkins.
Versatility is #1 when drafing players.
MLF must put guys in the position needed most.
If that is at center. So be it.

He reminds me a bit of Blair Kiel who was a struggling quarterback who played for the packers for a few years about a decade later than Eric. Different position, but again a guy you would like to do well. Blair unfortunately died too young from a heart attack.

A much shorter list for Game Balls than Lame Calls. I would have much preferred to have more rookies and 2nd year players with Game Balls - than a third year depth player (Wooden).

Isreal Abanikanda is better at KRs than as a RB. While he has burst - not much change-in-direction and visiion.

Yes Monk had a bad day, A larger question - has he ever had a good day?

I will say my farewell to Mecole Hardman.

Until the coaching improves, both MLF and his positional coaches, nothing will improve. The OL is undisciplined, has poor form, play and advancement was stopped repeatedly with holding calls-that's coaching. WR's still dropping balls. Jordan Love threw 4 catchable balls and one over-throw.

MLF cannot compare to a coach like Aaron Glen who prepares his team, holds his players accountable but is fair and well-liked. I'm also real tired of MLF's 'about-to-cry' look. He had all season to study better teams, upgrade his coaches, demand accountability from both players/coaches. This is not high school.

This was a preseason game. They are calling plays and putting out things they would never do in a game. They want to see players in certain situations and they don't look at game script at all. To cry the sky is falling is just silly at this point. Relax, they don't play for real for a long time and you can expect more experimenting in these meaningless games.

Effort, fundamentals and technique need to be apparent in every game. This team was as unprepared to play as any team I can remember. Saying the performance doesn't count because it's preseason is the poorest of excuses. The coaches need to take a hard look at themselves for having the players unprepared to play. That is the crux of the matter. The team wasn't ready to play and that is very troubling.

First excellent report thank you.
My observation based on what I saw is developmentals, undrafteds, late rounders trying to play against better quality players on other teams. Guys looking confused, out of place, out of shape and lacking speed. Poor tackling all around, poor pass coverage and too many mental mistakes.
There is just too much to correct at this stage. Mentally these guys are not ready for football.
Compared to the Vikes yesterday, this team looks way way behind. Luckily the Lions aren't any better and the bears Achilles heel looks like Williams who reports say isnt getting it.
Yes we can all say these werent the A team but the coaches coach the B team the same as the A team and if the B team looks bad how much better can the A team be with the same coaching???
I thought 8 wins would be very good considering the schedule. Not sure if this team can get 6 wins based on the play yesterday from guys you will have to rely on B team or not.

The wins and losses don’t mean anything. The undisciplined penalties and drops and blunders are reoccurring from last year. They have a wealth of talent, but where is the players intensity from the team leaders? Sloppy play is a real concern and needs to be addressed. Coaches and veteran players share the blame 50/50 on this one.Bright spots is the draft class has players that can impact games this year.

Thoughts...
First off--I agree that this game was more about situational play and seeing guys play together than it was about the score or stats.
Agree that the top of the depth chart at most positions is locked up, and that the 1s were mostly "warming up" and trying to not get hurt.
Agree that this was largely an unschemed game for the Packers, but Glenn is very familiar with the Packers and the Jets were largely an unscouted opponent. The Jets clearly went after Packers' anticipated weaknesses.
Agree there's no excuse for getting your head handed to you by a bad football team. Show some pride. Expect more fire against the Colts.
Watched Isaiah Simmons and saw some indications of why he was out there to be had. He can run, but his drops in coverage were inconsistent and often had him tripping over other teammates.
Harlan and Kuhn called some of those early passes drops. A couple were not: they were clearly defensed, but there's a real problem here with returning guys. Love wasn't great, but he deserved better than he got.
Willis was nothing special, but the OL play did him no favors. He looked confused at times, but that might have been a function of his route-runners. His trade value, for those of us who think that should be something the Packers are thinking about, won't be all that much unless he balls out the next two weeks.
There's no upside in Clifford.

I'm not terribly concerned about last night: we've seen some PS stinkers from the Packers in the past, and they've gone on to have very good seasons afterward. Doesn't change the fact that watching one really sucks. We'll see who they put on the field over the rest of the PS and how they progress.

I would like to know if it is the league or is it in-house who determines what is considered a drop. We need to be better at catching the ball, but many of those drops were in tight coverage and I agree some looked like good plays by the Jets defense. There was one terrible drop that I can remember which I believe was Heath where he completely lost concentration.

We had 31 passing yards after 3 quarters. Any way you spin that, it was awful. Pretty much our last drive by Taylor Elgersma doubled our passing offense.

1/10 on 3rd down. Was the goal to give Whelan some practice? I don't thinks he needs any.

I thought Kalen King played pretty good albeit against back-ups.

On your point about Simmons:

* He was flat-footed and slow to react often...especially on the screen pass.
* Dibbing your head while tackling is not good form and is something taught NOT to do in Pop Warner....he was not the only one doing this. (If you wish to limit contact drills, are we at least practicing with tackle dummies, and making the players do it right, prior to moving into some other segment of practice?)
*Also taught early in players young careers on defense: ALWAYS turn the play IN to your teammates and swarm to the ball...don't give up the sideline!! He gave up the sideline at least twice.
* On one particular short yardage play, Welch shoots in for the tackle-stop behind the line of scrimmage, while Simmons is again flat footed, eventually blocked two yards off the line of scrimmage.

Thanks, RD!

I've been skeptical of Simmons all along. Ty'Ron Hopper looked good on Saturday night, as he did in the preseason last year, and I would like to see him get into the mix as at least the #4 LB if he can't beat out McDuffie for #3. I'm so sick of hearing about Simmons' 40-yard dash time. Let's get a football player out there.

I haven't completely given up on Simmons. I think it was worth taking a flier on him and seeing if he could master the LB position. He's been trending downward since the pads came on, though, which is no surprise. This experiment may be nearing its conclusion.

another soft showing from a soft coached team...perhaps MLF should start winning at a packed Lambeau field, preseason or not...fans would appreciate it...

Packers fans need to keep an eye on the prize. Never before has a team gone 0-20 in a season. Last night was the first step toward immortality. This team can finally take the crown away from the 2008 Lions and 72 Dolphins. This team can be talked about for decades. In the future the remaining media outlets can trot out a story about how the surviving packers safety cracks open a domestic can of beer to celebrate the first win for some team to preserve the 2025 Packers Legacy. Perfection must be the goal. Strive for it. The packers must show the drive, motivation and skill to do what has yet to be done. Failure is not an option! . /s.

It’s only preseason, but what a pathetic performance, they look unprepared.

This is what I would like to see from MLF:
Holding both positional coach and player accountable.

For example, MLF should be stern with both Love and QB coach, Mannion about Love's continued poor footwork. Love should have made significant strides during the off-season and shown improvement by training camp. MLF should demand improvement and admin harsher consequences.

Same with OL coach, Butkus-there should be more discipline, better footwork. MLF needs to be tougher and more attuned. Same w/WR coach & players.

I think he delegates too much to average coaches who are lax in general, poor in fundamentals training/accountability and then seems shocked on game day.

The man needs a course in how to be a Head Coach. Aaron Glen made it clear he needed a good OC and DC as he was now a HC.

I was just informed that, apparently, there's people out there who think the point of preseason games is to focus on winning.

Imagine how confused, befuddled, and potentially angry these people must be after a preseason loss.

How do you account for lack of discipline, poor form, bad footwork?
These players and their coaches disrespected fans and Lambeau field.

I have to watch more tape, but my initial observation on individual performances that I have not commented on above:
* Brenton Cox - Stayed home for tackle-stop and looked active to me.
*Engabare - Would have made 2 more impact plays, if not held....it was preseason for the refs, too! Regardless, he was active and looked good.
* Omar Brown's work on special teams. If it continues, it could help him make this team.
*Sorrell looks the part in play too! Nice pass rush where he almost got there twice.
*Fitzpatrick needs to get his head around quicker. On Willis' endzone strip, he makes a nice chip block. adjusts his helmet as he goes into the pattern, THEN gets his head turned. Regardless, Willis did not appear to even look his way, despite the fact that he was the check-down receiver and wide-open. Willis's error imo, and a Rhyan fail on maintaining block.
*Fitzpatrick with some decent blocking
* Jordan Morgan looked better, but getting pushed back to much. Needs to be a little more stout!
*Tom allowed pressure too.
*Defensive line was constantly pushed 2 yards backward on run plays early.
*McDuffie over-pursues and gives up a huge cutback lane.
*Anybody notice that on Hardman's muffed punt, that he appeared to be 55 yards back on a 40 yard punt???? What was this about?
* I saw very little penetration/disruption from the interior of our defensive line and that includes Stackhouse who seemed slow off the ball on the few pass plays that I saw of him.
*Wooden may have been blown back at times, but he was winning his share of battles to, and was relentless.
*Kenny had a couple of good plays too, prior to departing early.
*Jordan Love, if you are going to run, be decisive! You had a potential 1st down then stopped. I have a feeling you will go for it in a real game.
*Johnson looks decisive and hits the hole fast, helping his line. What I really liked is how he met a would-be tackler, head-on, and bowled him over.
*King looked good.

"Engabare -"

Not a star, but the kind of workmanlike DE that every team needs on its depth chart.

"Fitzpatrick with some decent blocking"

He seemed to function well as a dump-off/outlet in the passing game, too. I thought he was a bright spot.

"Jordan Morgan looked better, but getting pushed back to much. Needs to be a little more stout!"

Both he and Belton apparently scored well via PFF.

"I saw very little penetration/disruption from the interior of our defensive line and that includes Stackhouse who seemed slow off the ball on the few pass plays that I saw of him."

You just described the pre-draft scouting report on Stackhouse: big, strong, hard to move off the point of attack, but not quick off the snap or very disruptive in the opponent's backfield.

Thanks, Dobber! I am curious of your thoughts....

Jordan Morgan had good form and really played decently....I should have led with that statement My bad! I just want more from him pass-blocking (not giving as much ground and allowing the collapse of the pocket), if he is to be a starting tackle. His form looked solid to me. He stymied rushers at times, so he can do it. He has a technique lapse that shows up on tape, and I did not see the Jets try to take advantage of that this game, so I cannot tell you if Jordan has corrected it as of yet.

Belton was a beast, though he may have missed a chip-block and did have an off-the-ball penalty, which is a lapse in detail. I think we should all feel good about him after the Jet's game, though again, it was not against some of these 1st round edge rusher types. Johnson's 2 big late runs to the right, were partially due to Belton handling business....Confidence building game for both gentlemen!

One observation. Packers can't make the mistake of cutting Welsh this year. He should be a roster lock.

Maybe...Simmons did not help his cause last night. Welch last least made some plays. And Hopper should get more snaps now.

Had high hopes for Simmons...Hafley says he has him focused on playing LB, not S, hybrid S, Edge, and rush LB.
So far the results are not encouraging.

Agree on keeping Welch, after losing Wilson they need a fundamentally sound and physical tackler for scrimmage and special teams with veteran savvy and he is that guy.

Kristian Welches are a dime a dozen. He's always going to lose out to a LB who can contribute on the defensive depth chart. The only reserve LB who looked that part was Hopper.

R-E-L-A-X about last night’s game. MLF, the Yoda of NFL coaches, is using the pre-season to lure the Lions into a false sense of security for game 1. Then the Pack is going to unload a nuanced Shock & Awe on the Lions that will send Campbell into therapy. GPG!

Yeah, we can squawk about all the lackluster play, the drops, the penalties some players seem to get, more than anyone else, but the thing is: This game was played at Lambeau Field! To put out such a bad effort, at our home stadium, should have everyone worried about their jobs! Have some fricking pride in who you are, who you play for and where you play football!!! This game was over in the 1st quarter! Where's the team, that many expect to go deep, into the playoffs? That team was no where to be found. There were a few exceptions to the overall ugliness, that showed itself, on the field and Kalani highlighted them, nicely in his post. Those players get a temporary pass. As for the others, it's time to show some fricking pride and play the game like you are meant to play it! That "G" on your helmets stands for "GREATNESS," NOT for "GODDAMN!" GO PACK, GO!!!
