Hold-In Working in Love's Favor

Team has little to gain by waiting.

By all accounts, the Green Bay Packers defense has dominated the offense during this first week of training camp.  I would like to think the main reason for that is the scheme and motivational approach led by new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.  I would like to think it is because he has the right players lining up in the right places to give them the maximum chance of being effective.  I would like to think it is because of the intense competition the front office has created across all levels on that side of the ball.

But deep down inside, I know better.

I strongly suspect the main reason the Packers offense has struggled through the first series of workouts is because the guy who makes it go is watching instead of playing.  As of this writing, Jordan Love had still not signed his contract extension.  He will not take part in practice until his new deal is completed and signed.  The perception from the outside has been that the announcement is imminent.  That it’s coming any day now.  But as the first week of camp rolls on, the situation becomes a little more uncomfortable each day.

There are little signs things are not going well.  The Packers brought in a fourth quarterback to share the camp load.  Not sure they would have done that if they expected Love’s agreement to be forthcoming quickly.  Love himself has stopped talking to the press.  Brian Gutekunst says these kinds of negotiations are very big and take time.  None of this necessarily means there is a standoff, but it’s not exactly encouraging either.

In the meantime, Love watches.  And what he is seeing is not pretty.  Sean Clifford has been operating as the first team quarterback and observers are not giving glowing reports about his performance, nor that of any of the signal callers for that matter.  In Wednesday’s practice there were no less than five interceptions, and apparently could have been three or four more.  Not fearing the pass, the defense has swallowed up the run game as well.  Granted, all of this took place without pads.  Saturday is to be the first padded workout and perhaps things will change, but it seems to me pads will only allow the defense to charge faster and hit harder.

Regardless of how supportive his teammates are, this situation has to be incredibly awkward for Love, for the coaches, and the other quarterbacks.  Not to mention the fact that Love needs the practice.  He’s not a ten year veteran who knows the offense as though it is second nature.  The reps he is missing are costly to the cohesion and timing of the unit.  He hasn’t lined up under center and taken a snap with his teammates since mini camp ended.

The troubles exhibited by the offense in camp are clearly working in Love’s favor.  With every pick thrown by the back-ups, the pressure on the team to relent on whatever the sticking point is in the talks ratchets up a notch.  Since neither side is talking, we don’t know what’s holding up the deal.  There have been reports the problem is guaranteed money beyond the first year, something Green Bay generally does not do.  If that’s true, this could go on for a while.  The team has to seriously consider the impact of all of their future contracts if they break policy for Love.

I have seen criticism of the Packers for not having their quarterback signed and sealed before camp began, but I suspect Love and his agent were in no hurry to wrap things up, because they had no leverage in May or June.  Now, with the urgency of week one bearing down, they do indeed have leverage.  Perhaps all of the leverage.

It’s difficult for me to see any benefit to the team from holding out against Love’s demands, assuming those demands are not outrageous.  There is quite obviously no alternative to turn to at quarterback.  Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt are not close to being ready to start an NFL regular season game.  There’s no one out there to sign or trade for that can step right in and lead Green Bay to the playoffs.  The Packers must have Love signed by opening day.  That’s a given.  Meanwhile, every practice he observes as a spectator makes him less ready for that opener in Brazil against the Eagles.  Surely the front office needs to recognize they have little or nothing to gain by waiting.  They have to capitulate sooner or later. So why not sooner?

For the time being, the whole matter doesn’t seem to have become contentious or divisive.  But make no mistake, it is hurting the team.

Don't worry, be happy, it'll get done...Even if Love isn't in there right now, it's nice to hear the defense is "dominating"--so training camp is as good of a place to start as anywhere.

"I strongly suspect the main reason the Packers' offense has struggled through the first series of workouts is because the guy who makes it go is watching instead of playing."

It was the same when Love was a rookie, wait, he didn't even dress that first year, though the same again was thought in his second year and first camp. It's too early to talk about others not moving the Offense. Perhaps there is a Purdy in there. Let's wait at least for a somewhat legit practice game.

I have no real issue with what he gets paid because I nor any of us have a say in the matter, however, just don't start the narrative that he proved himself equal to the contract number. He showed us that he can play well, over a short term of the season, and the other 'low-level' of play needs to be near non-existent going forward.

You're worth what you get paid. No narrative in that. He's not being paid exclusively to play, don't forget that. He's the face of the franchise, he's the lead in jersey sales, he's prime time marketing. The equation is beyond a half season of all-world play. He'll be paid to be the standard bearer, realistically no one tunes in on Thursday, Sunday and Monday to watch Mark Murphy in the box or Matt LaFleur on the sidelines. Ask Green Bay merchants if they want to start the season with Clifford at QB. Go ahead, ask.

I tried to ask the guys at the Oval Office, but they said to shut the damn door, they aren't paying to air condition the outside. Kid at the Shell station in Ashwaubenon, said he didn't really care.

I'm heading over to Bay Park Square. Figure I'll start at Kohls and work my way down the strip. I'll get back to ya.

thanks. it's so hard to get the real view from Portland. I'd also like to know if anyone is pouring that Christian Bros Sacred Bond brandy. I bought a bottle and made an old-fashioned, but I used too high quality ingredients and it seems to be wanting...

(and by wanting I mean
wanting me to make another one)

"don't start the narrative that he proved himself equal to the contract number. He showed us that he can play well, over a short term of the season..."

Narratives don't mean anything except an opinion mostly devoid of facts.

What is a fact, Rodgers got his first Lock Down deal in October of 2008 halfway through his first starting season. He did not prove equal to his K number either finishing 6-10. That ended up working out. It seems the Packers are very adept finding high potential QBs who back it up on the field

At least with Love he proved he can win, make the playoffs, win a game and just miss going to the NFCCG....and is getting his deal AFTER his first, successful starting season.

The only right price is where the buyer and seller agree.

I saw a comparison that only 2 QBs have done the following in 1 season (Mahomes in 2022 and Love in 2023)
4000+ passing yards
30+ passing TDs
200+ rushing yards
4+ rushing TDs
15 or fewer turnovers
30 or fewer sacks

I think that speaks volumes of Love's potential, given that he did all that his first season, including some games that were real stinkers. It shows how high he rose later in the season. And he did all that with the youngest skill players in the league. Those numbers are looking like Rodger's last MVP season. And that includes the bumpy roads mid season when the offense wasn't clicking.

Mahomes is driven....like Brady was. Not many QB's like those two. We can only hope Love has this in him. Getting together with team mates in the off-season is a good start. Hopefully it continues. We have a lot of good players. Healthy and hungry sounds good to me...GPG

Wow, $167 million guaranteed for a guy who's one good thump to the noggin away from spending months in a dark, quiet room. Doesn't seem like a wise move by Miami.

Jordan should jump aboard the rolling guarantee train. It's the Packer Way.

Ken is absolutely right. The Packers here are reaping the reward of their poor moves in 2022. They don't have multiple seasons to base Love's play on for the contract. He has them over a barrel and they are going to have to capitulate. The sooner, the better.

It's not time to panic. Yet. But it's not helping the team. After family night, THEN it'll be time to panic.

Let's not compound the poor moves in 2022 with poor moves in 2024.
No capitulation, no panic.
If Gute and LaFleur think Love is Top 10 material in talent and character, make him a generous offer but not an outrageous offer.
Other players have to get paid for the Packers to be a championship team. If Love doesn't get that, he doesn't seem like a championship quarterback.
The Packers survived the loss of Rodgers just fine, and if necessary, we can move on from Love.
No more selling out the dignity of the Packers as was done with Rodgers. No player should hold us hostage. Let's learn the lesson.

So much angst. They've most likely already agreed on the amount and the structuring.

I'm sure the problem is paying a player at his peak.
Whats the plan if he gets hurt?
( During that contract.)
The chances are he will-
This contract must be good for both sides.
